James Purefoy was quite tasty as Reese Witherspoon's husband in Vanity Fair.

I've seen Ciarán Hinds in too many things to mention them all here but my all time favorite will always be him playing Capt Wentworth in Persuasion.

Polly Walker, James Purefoy and Ciaran Hinds were all in one of my favorite Hardy adaptations, The Mayor of Casterbridge. Brilliant. And, although I haven't seen it, Kevin McKidd and Purefoy shared a kiss in Bedrooms and Hallways. Lots of cross pollinating in this production.

I'm with M. Darcy on the Wentworth love. Hinds has played a number of pedophiles in his career; it's time he was emperor! He also has a bad habit of having awful hairdos, but the caesar cut works really well.

Polly Walker was radiant in Enchanted April.

Oh, everyone and everything was radiant in Enchanted April.

A few years ago I saw Lindsay Duncan (and Alan Rickman) in Private Lives in London (before it went to Broadway) and she was amazing in it.

Ooh, I saw it when it came to B'way! Small world! (Round about the same time, I had a Rickman street sighting. I swooned on Madison Avenue, I don't mind telling you.) I agree, LD was fab. She was also great in dual roles in Mansfield Park, as Fanny's mother and aunt.

Recently watched Polly Walker in 'State of Play'. Best thing in the show, apart from Bill Nighy of course.

Which also starred James Purefoy as the drunken, disillusioned older brother.

I remember watching part of "A Knight's Tale" on cable one night and thinking it was horrible, but the mediocricy was temporarily interrupted by James Purefoy, who was about 10 times sexier and more interesting in his minimal screentime than Heath Ledger was throughout the entire film. Still, I will not watch it again.

And Polly Walker was Jane Fairfax in "Emma" with Gwyneth Paltrow. She has a great scene where Emma tries to get everyone's attention by doing a little song on the piano, and then PW gets up and blows her out of the water. Loved that scene.

Agreeance on the fantasticness of Lindsay Duncan in Private Lives. I do have to say that I did not really enjoy the version of Jane Eyre that Ciaran Hinds was in. Though his melodramatic reading of the line, "We are one THOUL, Jane!" has become a popular quote among me and my friends. I am glad to hear that he's been good in other stuff, though.

As always, I agree with everything M. Darcy has said above.

I'll just brag that I saw Ciaran Hinds in Closer on Broadway.

Max Pirkis was fantastic as the midshipman who had his arm amputated in Master and Commander. I always worry about whether younger actors will be able to carry their weight in a show like this, but I bet he'll be great.

I am so jealous floretbroccoli - I always regret not seeing Closer in NY or London.

There's another Pride and Prejudice connection - Indira Varma was in Bride and Prejudice.

I have an irrational affection for that movie, so when I saw these two actors in the Rome previews I got all excited. In fact, it's mostly the actors that is making me interested in watching this. I, too, loved Cieran Hinds as Captain Wentworth. (Kevin McKidd seems to be one of the only actors here who hasn't been in a Jane Austen movie, but Jennifer Ehle played one of his love interests in Bedrooms and Hallways, so maybe that counts!)

She was also great in dual roles in Mansfield Park, as Fanny's mother and aunt.

You know, I just figured out that she played both parts a few days ago when I caught part of that movie on cable for the umpteenth time. I was so proud of myself for finally catching that. And yes, she was good in those roles.

Lindsay Duncan played Kevin McKidd's mother in a recent Scottish film, Afterlife. I don't think it was ever released here (I have the region 2 DVD) but it's quite good, a Rain Man-esque story...it makes me look forward to any possible interaction their Rome characters might have.

Now that I think about it, I've never seen Lindsay Duncan in anything in which she wasn't compelling as all get out, regardless of the rest of the film. She's one of those actors who are worth watching no matter what they do.

I'm excited to see Ray Stevenson. I absolutely loved him in the historical cheesiness that was King Arthur, and his was the only character I paid any attention to in Return of the Native.

Raaaaay!

In addition to the coat and Nighy, James McAvoy was pretty too. Polly Walker played the wife as a bad girl to throw us off from the fact that her hubby was uncouth in the extreme.
As for State of Play? You can get it on dvd now. I should get mine soon. And I am saddened that the coat never got its own show.
As for Rome? I am actually looking forward to the HBO/BBC lots of nudity, sex, and dirt version.

Indira Varma is also in Mira Nair's Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love. It's Skinemax with arthouse aspirations and a mediocre flick all around. But Indira's gorgeous in it.

I actually didn't mind AKT that much, found it--and Heath Ledger--surprisingly enjoyable. But James Purefoy was really the one who caught my attention, very charismatic in the few scenes he had. It was only later that I saw him in the contested adaptation of Mansfield Park.

Of course, Ciaran Hinds will always be Capt. Wentworth, though I also bought Ivanhoe and Jane Eyre for him. One of these days I need to catch up on the Mayor of Casterbridge.

The other face I recognize from the male cast is Rick Warden who plays Pompey's son, Quintus. He was one of the officers (Harry Walsh) alongside Damian Lewis and Ron Livingston in Band of Brothers, my favorite HBO miniseries to date.

Remember poor, pitiful Foy played by Marc Warren? He had information that was key to the inquiry and everywhere he went he wore his tragic coat of suspicious furriness and fugliness. The coat became a character unto itself. In fact the coat was more interesting than most tv characters on American tv.

Its not a great picture but you can kind of see The Coat.

Ciarán was also in Circle of Friends for about five seconds playing a Professor (its funny how Circle had Ciarán and Colin Firth who both later played Jane Austen heros).

But he was lovely in Topsy Turvy, about Gilbert and Sullivan's premiere of The Mikado. Couldn't believe it was the same actor who played Tommy in Trainspotting.

Polly Walker also plays an IRA member in Patriot Games, and Ciaran Hinds plays a cuckolded husband in the made-for-HBO movie The Affair.
