First another RSL fan encounter off some random message board. It's a lot like arlykeeno described, so that would appear to be the norm for RSL to shun the whole 'star' routine.
This after seeing the off Broadway play Below the Belt with Judd Hirsch and RSL:
After the show, we're standing around waiting for the actors. A guy comes up to me and says, "If you're waiting for Judd Hirsch, he leaves in a private car out back." I said, "I'm not." A few minutes later, RSL comes out with his BIKE and a bike helmet under his arm, talks to some more important audience members, then heads our way (i.e. towards the door). I stopped him and asked him to sign my program. I told him I loved him in DPS and MAAN. He meekly said, "Thank you." He is SO shy, soft-spoken and humble. I couldn't believe it. I have a picture with him - I'm smiling ear to ear and he looks like he doesn't get his picture taken very often! After signing a few other autographs, he got on his bike and rode off, while my friends and I walked back to our hotel - with me on cloud nine!
Next a couple of RSL interviews that you can listen to (Lizzim, these are for you). The first from The Leonard Lopate Show (radio) when RSL was in The Fifth of July and another from The Charlie Rose Show when he interviewed the cast of Tape (yeah, all three of them). You can also purchase the VHS or DVD version of that show too.
Last is a quote from RSL on the subject of Long Day's Journey into Night, which I found kinda interesting.
You can read the whole interview (from 2003) here.
'Long Day's Journey' was hell: The play's too long, the cast was weird, I hated going to work. Every evening at 6, when the church bells rang near my house, I'd think 'Here we go again; four hours of screaming and crying.' I understand and embrace the success it was artistically and financially and wouldn't trade it for anything. But I wouldn't say it was fun."
What do you mean 'the cast was weird'?
"Me, Vanessa Redgrave, Philip Hoffman - talk about complex egos! And the biggest diva of all is the play."
