Fanfic: The Good, the Bad and the Unspeakably Brain-Scorching

1) Olivia gets pregnant with Elliot's twins (of course), one of which she miscarries.
2) Kathy Stabler goes psychotic and tries to strangle Olivia.
3) Casey has a psychic communication with Alex Cabot's "ghost." No, really.
4) Alex returns and gets Cesar Valez sentenced to death in two paragraphs. Not that Alex isn't that awesome, but still...
It doesn't have any of the OhHellNo pairings, but there is a suggestion of Alex/Munch. Blech.
So does anybody have any good fic recs that don't come from P&P?

Olivia gets pregnant with Elliot's twins (of course)...
But only one of them was his, right? [/Friends]
As for non P&P fic: I don't read that much fic, but I stumbled across Slaying Saint George last year and really liked it. It's Alex/Abbie (from the Mothership), so it may not be everyone's cup of tea. And it also might make you crave ribs.

Unspeakably brain-scorching: I read a Cabot/Huang story and the images remained burned indelibly into the back of my eye-lids. Though I can see it from the actual show - "Lie down on the couch." Gah, damn you Alex Cabot and your effortless chemistry with men, women and animals! And Huang.
ETA: after five years reading MBTV/TWoP, I freaking finally make 100 posts.

The main character is Joan, a 14-year-old orphan (as if that isn't the Dark Mark of the Mary Sue) who helps the squad solve the murder of her birth mother by explaining the concept of "good cop/bad cop" to Fin (Oh no she didn't!), and then chases the suspect down on horseback. In Central Park. No, really. No, really. Read the last chapter if you don't believe me.
Oh, and she "has a fondness for nicknames" that leads her to call Fin "Finland." If only Our Heroes weren't so hopelessly OOC, one of them would have punched Joan in the face by now.

ETA: Also, pretty much anything from the SVU section at silverlake is worth your time. A/O, E/O, and--dare I say it--Casey/O (my city of rain). But it's really, really, really well done. Just scroll down.

Everyone's read it, but because it can't be said enough: Woodstock's Series
Speaking of bad recs, I avoid anything which has anyone referring to Alex as "Lex", "Lexi" or any variation thereof like the plague.

I'd also be interested in either of the boys paired with Olivia or Alex, just because nobody ever does that. Come on, sarcastic Jewish cops and slightly less sarcastic black cops need love too!

I've also seen one (yeah, also at the Pit) where Olivia was squeeing like a 12 year-old over her new "Romeo" and it turned out to be Munch.
I've never seen Fin paired with any of Our Heroes - except of course, Munch. It's strange, because while I find Fin/Alex or Fin/Liv to be icky, neither is as icky as Huang/Alex or Huang/Liv, both of which I have seen. Yeah, also at the Pit.
ETA: This author and this one are fond of pairings I just don't get. Note that Fin does, in fact, get some action.

I mean, don't write a fic if you don't know the characteres and won't be faithful to the canon. I just read a story about Olivia being stuck in a relationship with a guy that hits her. How plausible do you think it is? Olivia, THE Olivia, the o one that's afraid of getting close, get intimate to people, the cop one that won't take crap from anyone.
Well, I guess that's why it's called FANfiction, people can write the shit they want.
But the cards on the site are worth cheking.
Ps: It only works in Internet Explorer. Don't know why.

What is this Pit of which you speak? Anyway, I have seen a Munch/Fin/Olivia fic. I actually tried to read it because someone with a really sick sense of humor told me it was funny. It involved a Munch/Fin pairing with Munch being a DD and Olivia and Fin both reeeally drunk Olivia whines to join in with M/F. Didn't bother reading past that cause my eyes were bleeding.I've never seen Fin paired with any of Our Heroes - except of course, Munch. It's strange, because while I find Fin/Alex or Fin/Liv to be icky, neither is as icky as Huang/Alex or Huang/Liv, both of which I have seen. Yeah, also at the Pit.

That would be the Pit of Voles, also known as fanfiction.net. Most of the fic there is not of the highest quality. Which is not to say that it all sucks, but there's so much crap there it's hard to find the good stuff, if any. What is this Pit of which you speak?

And I love the Casey ficlet. Tarheel, I love you. (Especially since I found out you speak Russian. Mmm.)
Another almost-unheard of pairing that should have stayed unheard of: Casey/Branch. Just... ugh.

Just echoing captain sam (who writes some amazing A/O fic of her own) - for those who haven't yet subscribed to the OliviaAlex Yahoo! group, go now and read every post by caveatreader/Del. She oftens posts clever and fall-off-the-chair-funny "bits" in posts which might not be long enough to be archived on P&P. Case in point - this Clarence Darrow story. If only Alex won every one of her cases that way.

I don't think I've read anything I consider the definitive A/O story (or the definitive Stabler story, for that matter). One of the problems I have with A/O stories is that I think Alex's voice is hard to pin down. Since we know so little of her inner workings, it's hard to know if someone has actually captured her. It's easier to read something and see that it's not Alex - any fic in which she uses "Livvie" for Olivia or allows herself to be called "Lexi," "Lex," "Aly" or any other diminutive.
I think it's easier for authors to get Olivia and Elliot's voices down, even if they often don't know what to do with them.
Since "Futility" aired tonight, I can't let this opportunity pass. Someone upthread recommended everything by theholyinnocent, and I'd have to concur. Especially Big Night, a ficlet that takes off from Elliot's "grocery store with strippers" line in Futility. It's a funny, sharp, poignant observation of Stabler, who ruminates on his own (mid)life and his relationship with his partner and hers with the ADA. Really good stuff.
Also, I can't believe I haven't done my usual fanfic recommendation - lord knows I made it enough in the old thread. "Fide et Amour" is a work in painfully slow, if not completely stalled, progress, about the unlikely relationship between a recently widowed Elliot Stabler and a still-in-exile Mike Logan. The writing is funny and moving and sexy and completely believable. Both characters come off well, although I'm a tad worried about Stabler's current state. I'd call it the definitive Stabler SVU fic except that it's not only unfinished, but a little bit dated, since it began so early in the series. (There's no Cabot or Fin.)
You can catch up either by joining the Fide community on LJ or the yahoo group. A few months ago, the author promised to update. Haven't gotten anything yet, but hope remains eternal. If you're a Stabler fan and want to read some Stabler slash, this is not to be missed.

True that. And in each story how Alex is interpreted really changes the A/O dynamic. That's why I like the Woodstock series so much, because it's as close to canon Alex as I imagine. Plus Stabler being a fantastic, non-clueless bloke who worked out everything by himself and Our Heroes actually doing police work. Er, yeah, I'll find some new stuff to pimp soon.I don't think I've read anything I consider the definitive A/O story (or the definitive Stabler story, for that matter). One of the problems I have with A/O stories is that I think Alex's voice is hard to pin down. Since we know so little of her inner workings, it's hard to know if someone has actually captured her.

And I want to pitch in with the Del/D.S. recommendations (recently found out that Del and D.S. are actually the same person- not surprising- and she's wonderful). Especially Out of the Game. That's my favorite- it's also a lot of other people's favorite, I know.
Sorry! It was scary.Any Casey/Branch story would have to be a spanking fic. Thanks, Sing, for putting that thought into my head.

Has anyone seen this cards? In the botton of the page. They are so darn funny.
tereza - those cards are too funny! Thanks for posting. And they're very true.
It really bothers me that 98% of the E/O fics (my favorite kind) have to involve babies - a couple doesn't need to have a kid to be complete.

Oh no... UV... I just can't believe it! Sure, we don't always see eye to eye on certain knee-jerking Alex or Elliot themes. But, but... this? This is big.I've never quite gotten the love for that "Spark" series.
Awww... who am I kidding? You're still my longstanding, unrequited forum crush. There's only one thing to do... we must never speak of this again. ;-D
I'm not sure that I've read the definitive 'classic' Alex & Olivia fanfic yet. But, I would qualify Harriet's "Spark" and D.S.'s "Out of the Game"... as the definitive post-Loss A/O happy endings. I'm crazy about both for their style... a perfect blend of romance and humor; and for their effect... sublimely evoking the Alex & Olivia that are so ensconced in my head.I don't think I've read anything I consider the definitive A/O story (or the definitive Stabler story, for that matter). One of the problems I have with A/O stories is that I think Alex's voice is hard to pin down. Since we know so little of her inner workings it's hard to know if someone has actually captured her.
I couldn't agree more that capturing Alex's voice can really make or break a story. Though do I think there's broader room for rendering Alex... post-Loss... considering the changes wrought from having to hide away in Witness Protection. Like we saw in Ghost. She was the confident 'old' Alex at times, while being softer, wearier, and more open than before.

I figured I'd get us started out with the brain-scorchingly awful: This is a fic that's so memorably bad, it's worthy of its own thread. It's also exceptionally long, so let me give you the highlights:
Here is my favourite moment from that fic, add duck. Elliot abruptly confesses his passion to Olivia, they kiss, and ...
“Mon Dieu,” she murmured, breaking away from him.
“French?”
“It means, ‘My God’,” she muttered.
Mein Gott!
Alex as Vicomte de Valmont?
Thank you for the link, Beelzebot. Somehow I'd missed this piece of snarky excellence. Worth it alone for the description of Olivia (from Liz's pov) as "that lunk-headed, self-absorbed butch."

Oh, no - and hee! We'll speak of it just this once more, anomalys, then we'll go back to being secret admirers. And we'll always have Alex and Elliot. Wait, that doesn't sound so bad, does it?Oh no... UV... I just can't believe it! Sure, we don't always see eye to eye on certain knee-jerking Alex or Elliot themes. But, but... this? This is big.

Well, that could be part of my problem - I don't have a dream version of A/O. But I definitely see the possibilities, and usually wind up underwhelmed by their fic versions. Plus, I'm kind of an angst whore, so the Spark series was just way too happy for me. That, and there is probably no universe in which I can accept Alex happily accepting a lapdance in front of her mother.a perfect blend of romance and humor; and for their effect... sublimely evoking the Alex & Olivia that are so ensconced in my head.
I agree with this; I hope we get some good fics post-Ghost. Of course, it also opens up a wealth of new ways for people to mis-write Alex.Though do I think there's broader room for rendering Alex... post-Loss... considering the changes wrought from having to hide away in Witness Protection. Like we saw in Ghost. She was the confident 'old' Alex at times, while being softer, wearier, and more open than before.
Man, I should really try to be more of a glass half-full kind of girl, shouldn't I?
