For those of us who can't get enough of looking at Ian McShane...here he is at the Director's Guild awards. Still in character..

If anyone hasn't heard, Deadwood Season 1 is due to be released on DVD on February 8th. Below is a detailed review...

UGO.Com Deadwood DVD Review

Kudos to HBO, sounds like they did a pretty good job with this one. Can't wait to see it for myself.

I apologiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiize if this isn't quite where notice like this belongs (don't rightly know of e-mails and newsletters qualify as "media"...please don't throw me to the pigs!), so anyone more experienced than I please feel free to bump this where it belongs...I just saw today that HBO is going to be airing all of Season One on On-Demand starting this week, along with a little behind-the-scenes snippet in preparation for Season Two.

I watched the behind-the-scenes show this afternoon (called something like "The Making of Deadwood: The Show Behind the Series"), and it seems like it's more for Season One than Two. The actors talking about their real-life counterparts, Milch talking about the language, etc.

Is this the one they showed before the series premiere?

Since they're doing the OnDemand thing in preparation for Season 2...that must mean S2 is coming soon? Anyone know when it's slated to start?

There's a great article in this week's New Yorker about Deadwood and David Milch, cronicalling his days from a herion junkie at Yale to writing for Hill Street, NYPD, drying out, and pitching the show to HBO (except using ancient Rome as the venue, not the Wild West.)

Beware, there are some mild-spoilerish things in the article, including:
Al Swearengengets a bad case of the kidney stones
and
he also gets his ass kicked by Seth.

Ah, Bob- such a great article! Milch=brilliant and I love reading about his process and his approach.... none of which surprises me, though.

The article made my week. Mark Singer is my favorite New Yorker profiler (you can read his amazing profile of Ricky Jay here on Ricky's site). It was long and meaty and a bit confusing (I hadn't thought about William James since the day I graduated college), but so fulfilling. I'd love to sit in that room with couches will Milch "writes."

Also, HBO.com finally has the extended new trailer up. It's here, and it's amazing.

The New Yorker didn't put in online, but I'll see if I can find someone with Lexis-Nexis access who can help us out...

Sounds like HBO is going all out to market the show this season. We'll have to have a report from someone in NY as to what this looks like in person.

Hot damn! I don't even know where or when to start looking! I'm still jazzed that I get to see the gang in that incredible Times Square billboard every morning. (An enormous faux daguerrotype of Al, Trixie, Sethie, and Alma. The ultimate touch is the inscription along the side: The Black Hills, 1877)

And that Milch profile was so effing best. Every time I turned the page I was like "Whoa! No tiny square yet?" The thing is gigantic! Come for the Chris Ware cover, stay for the Milch.

And, I'll just add its nice to talk Deadwood in these new respectable digs. Ricky Jay? Put 10 bucks on Hard Eight, please. Much snazzier than the Gem.

Apparently the profile isn't up on Lexis-Nexis yet, but as soon as it is, I'll post a link.

Meanwhile, was anyone watching the long general HBO promo tonight post-Mr. Wu? There was a quick flash of Seth and Alma that left me relatively breathless. I'm trying to think of the last time I was this excited about the second season of a show...

I'm glad HBO is investing so much in it. This is way more promotion than Carnivale got. While I love both shows, I'd hang my hat on Deadwood too.

Wonderful news about HBO's marketing efforts for the show!!

I read an article earlier today (see link below) that indicated HBO wasn't going to spend much on marketing. Looks like the guy who wrote this article has no idea what he's talking about!

Untrue Bad News About HBOs Support for Deadwood

With a proven hitmaker like Milch and a breakout star like McShane, HBO would be nuts not to give Deadwood their all. Just wish I lived in a bigger city! No billboards or gold nuggets for me.

Somebody posted a picture of the Times Square "advertisement" on the HBO threads.. It doesn't look like HBO is pinching pennies when it comes to marketing this show. Huzzah! Having the DVD boxed set rank in the top ten in sales on Amazon probably doesn't hurt either.

Good lord, that preview was fucking awesome! Who busted the fuck out of my boy Al? He was lookin' mighty puffy there... Seth looks pretty beat up as well, but if the fight was between the two of them, I daresay Seth got the better of Al.

I haven't watched HBO since The Wire ended (I'm in recap-only mode for Carnivale) so I haven't seen the promos. When's the best time to catch it, Sunday night?

They tend to show them right before a program is about to start. Ya know, in the little gaps between movies and whatnot.

Aw, poor tobey! The HBO website should have it up soon enough. In the meantime just picture Seth with a scabby forehead.

Dude, I so want to ride the Deadwood train!

Violent little cocksucker, aren't you? Heh.

michelec, I'd pretty much only seen the new promos on Sunday nights right before Carnivale, but last night I spotted one on Spike TV during a CSI commercial break, so it looks like Deadwood is trickling out onto the bigger networks. Yay! The more publicity, the better.

I got the March issue of True West magazine today. It's got a cover story on Deadwood that I believe has been mentioned on this board before. It's a good story with great pictures. It does contain some spoilers though as far as plot points go. Really, most of it was insight into Season 2 that I'd like to have read after I'd already watched it. So if you hate spoilers and haven't picked up the magazine yet, you might want to skip it.

Spoilerish things I would have preferred not to know...

Al finally meets Alma.
and
Hickock's last letter surfaces and moves around from character to character. It finds it's way to Samual Wolcott (Garret Dillahunt) who...
and
is George Hearst's geologist and is a sexual sadist and a killer.

tobey, the promo is great. Seth does look a little battered but Al looks worse. If you were hoping to see Al looking handsome, you don't get much of that in the promo!

Thanks for the link to the billboard dragonchaser.
