More curious, in fact, than I am about anything else based on the first hour.

If the dog dies, you're next.

I just hope that nothing happens to the dog. Even if the dog turns out to be some kind of Eeeee-vil Dog, or something like that. JJ, please, don't hurt the dog.

I'm also curious whether he turns out to be the kid's dog, or some other dog.
On the one hand, he looks pretty well fed and groomed for a dog that has been on an island for a while. On the other hand, if he just crash landed, he doesn't have a scratch on him and seems rather calm.

If the dog was on the plane (I'm assuming it was), do you think there's any significance to its being near Jack when he woke up? Or was that just a fluke? I'm not sure, yet, how supernatural this show is going to be, so I can't decide what's eerily important and what's just a conceit of the show's creators....

And if Vincent (if that is his real name) is someone's dog, that would explain why he's so well cared for. If I decided to live on a deserted island, I would definitely take my cats and all their accoutrement. Brushes, nip, scratchy toys, items of my own that have become their scratchy toys, etc. Even if I, say, got shipwrecked on a deserted island, you can guarantee that I would have found a way to get all the cat stuff in the lifeboat...

Right there with you, blushgoddess!
Was there any way to tell the size of the dog? (What I mean is, was he proportional to his surroundings?) I lost the TiVo battle so I can't go back and check. And the writers didn't helpfully put a dime next to him or something obvious that I would remember.
ETA - ah, thanks Nikki125!

For those concerned for Vincent's welfare, I think that dog is the safest character outside of Jack and Kate. I also get the feeling that Vincent won't be explaned for a while. That's fine with me, so long as he doesn't start dancing around and talking backwards.

The dog was a normal size dog, so I don't think he is the monster. During the opening scene, Vincent ran past Jack while he was laying on the ground and he was the right size in proportion to Jack and the trees.

Hee! Me too. I've fallen under the spell of The Dog. I'm under its power now. It must be protected at all costs. I don't care if JJ thins the ranks and discards some of the extraneous humans - The Dog must stay.I felt more emotionally invested in the dog than the vast majority of the human characters, but that's for my therapist and I to discuss, thanks.

Maybe Vincent only became Vincent the Shifty-Eyed Dog after being possessed by Sweetums the Big Mean Bunny?

And I've owned 2 labrador retrievers, and if they're any indication, they're a breed that stays close to people because they figure out pretty quickly that people bring them food.

Me too. I welled up when I saw the dog and the pregnant lady (meaning there'd be an infant in peril before too long), and I actually started to cry when I saw the little boy.
But this is Vincent's thread, and I don't want him to eat me on the off-chance that he is evil, so let me get back on topic! (You just know he's surfing this thread thinking, "Motherfuckers. I'm a good dog.")
I'll stick up for him - I don't think he's the monster because, IIRC, when he found Jack and he was looking at him, didn't he then run off when he heard whatever roaring sound it is that the actual monster makes? I didn't tape the show, so I'm trying to remember the sound that made Vincent run off - was it the monster, or the rumbling sounds of the plane getting ready to explode some more?
And even if he is a bad dog, they'd better not hurt him:
"AAAUUGGH!!! My face!! He's eating my face! Someone do something!"
"Awwww, but he's so cute and fluffy!"

I kept waiting on someone to comment on it, but I can see how they might have had other things on their minds. But if I'd been looking for some comfort, I'd have snuggled right up to that dog before choosing one of the less cuddly survivors.

But if it is an evil dog...well then we can yell "You bitch " at our tvs for good reasons when the evilness occurs.

My pet peeve (no pun intended) is that dogs (and other animals) make rotten actors. There's no way for a dog to act scared unless it actually is scared, which is complete forbidden (for good reason) -- so Vincent just looked perfectly groomed and perfectly calm until he turned around and (calmly) ran off into the jungle. I've spent too much time around my own lab, watching his behavior around new people or when he's unsure what's going on, for Vincent to seem like the victim of a plane wreck.
That said, I too am awfully excited about Vincent's presence. Yay labs!
