Here's the press release from Fox:
"THE COMPLEX: MALIBU" TO PREMIERE WITH TWO-HOUR EPISODE MONDAY, AUGUST 30, ON FOX
Sears is Sponsor of Competitive Home-Improvement Series Based on Australia's Most Successful Show Ever
From the creators of AMERICAN IDOL comes a new kind of makeover show. THE COMPLEX: MALIBU moves real-life couples into a cliffside apartment building in Southern California's coastal enclave of the rich and famous, and puts their construction, interior design and, most importantly, their relationship skills to the test with the chance to win a large cash prize. Home renovation under normal circumstances can be stressful enough to tear a relationship apart, but when couples are forced to keep within a tight budget and faced with strict deadlines and competitive neighbors, the stakes are even higher. Following a special two-hour premiere on Monday, August 30 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX, the series will air in its regular timeslot on Mondays (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) beginning Monday, September 6.
Nationwide retailer Sears, a sponsor of THE COMPLEX: MALIBU, has partnered with FOX and FremantleMedia in this unscripted series that gives contestants a budget to renovate their unit by a specified date.
Eight couples will compete for the opportunity to restore and redecorate one of four units. Under tight deadlines, the couples will battle each other for control of the units, while trying to add the most value to each of the rooms. A panel of real estate professionals - an interior designer, a real estate agent and an architect - will rank the rooms from best to worst and help decide the couples' fate: who stays and who goes. The renovated units will be sold at public auction, and the couple whose unit nets the highest-percentage profit will receive the profits from ALL of the units.
The eight couples participating in the competition are:
Barney (67) and Rose (64) from Hauppauge, NY
Brad (37) and Lew (39) from Phoenix, AZ
Carl (30) and Kim (30) from Las Vegas, NV
Dave (26) and Ana (27) from New York, NY
Erik (31) and Jayna (28) from Dallas, TX
Steve (28) and Nicole (27) from Chicago, IL
Sanyika (24) and Monique (26) from Washington, DC
Scott (32) and Sam (31) from Canton, GA
THE COMPLEX: MALIBU is based on the hit Australian show, "The Block," now in its second season for Channel Nine in Australia. The first season finale last August drew the highest rating of any show in that country in 15 years.
Sears, FOX and FremantleMedia will support the show through a multi-faceted marketing program, including advertising, point-of-sale and on-line promotions, public relations and product integration. The partnership provides Sears with an opportunity to reinforce that Sears is a fun place to shop and to showcase relevant and innovative merchandise. Terms of the partnership were not disclosed.
THE COMPLEX: MALIBU is produced by FremantleMedia North America, Inc. Ted Haimes ("Married By America," "Temptation Island," "The History of Rock 'n' Roll") is executive producer.

So I certainly hope that the US version of The Block has a rule that no gay couple should be seen painting in their tighty whiteys! Hee! Heck, let's ask that NONE of the contestants should be seen paiting in baggy scungy underwear, regardless of their persuasion!
It seems that they've Survivorised The Block. And it's refreshing to see people that the pretty hip thangs they have on our version participating on this version.
I suggest that anyone wanting to get a feel for what they might see should read the TWoP The Block thread

I'm looking forward to this show. I really got into House Rules on USA Network last year. Competitive home remodeling, sure beats pretty singles pretending to fall in love.

Yeah! I am so happy to see people that aren't 18 or 19 for once!! Go Barney and Rose!! :)

That says a lot doesn’t it.
”Ted Haimes ("Married By America," "Temptation Island," "The History of Rock 'n' Roll") is executive producer."
Not that I watched any of those shows. (or TI2)

For those who haven't watched yet: I'm sad to see the Sanyika(can't remember the woman's name) couple go. They were great!
Who else thinks Sam is a bitch?

ETA: Nimberlane, I guess you and I will never be roomies! ;-)

After a show is aired, no need to use spoiler tags.
Is Sam the one who through a coniption after every little thing? If so, she is a heinous bitch.
Love the gay couple. Most of the other couples are pretty nondescript so far. My main problem was trying to remember who was on which team.
And that host is so bad. In order to be a host, you should have some sort of personality, and this guy clearly has none.

Yes. Sam is a heinous bitch. I'm hoping she'll redeem herself some how. I mean, I have moments of bitchtude, but she passes me by a landslide.
The gay couple are cool, too. Hope they stick around for awhile.
Rose... I don't wanna call her a bitch right now, so I'll wait and see later.
ETA: CrumbyButtons, hehe, why is that? :D

I won't ever say "I won't watch again" because these threads can always peak my interest! We'll see...

Maybe this will be one of those shows that gets better once it's been pared down.
I do like the gay guys. Although I thought their room (or what I thought was their room since I got the rooms confused too) was pretty ugly. In fact, I wasn't like, "weee! I want to move in" about about any of the rooms.)
Are they all just assuming that Miami style = fugly?

Count me in, this is the best replacement for my beloved House Rules I've seen yet. A litle too much drama with the eviction ceremony, but loved the old guy screamng "Come on, who is it?". Jeff Probst would have a breakdown over something like that.

The only names I remember are Barney and Rose. I liked him, and he loves her, so I sorta hope they last a litle while.
What is the bitchy redhead's name? Spam? Yeah, that's it.
I truly wish to bitch slap her. Twice. Please.

I actually liked the eviction ceremony. My favorite part was when the Apartment Manager called Rose out. In my opinion, if what we saw on tv was accurate, she had every right to do so.

Both the nominated couples were the ones down one vote due to the leadership handicap. Think anyone will ever want to be leader now?
The evicted couple got a pretty raw deal. Team leader, Munique, seemed quite good; but husband, Shaquile was portrayed as rather inept (can't hit the free throw).
The nominated team that dosen't go gets to come back with a vengance. Someone else will be short a vote next time so they get to strike back. The preview even talked of sabotaging your own team because getting rid of someone you can't stand is much more important than winning.
I agree that of the eight pairs the old ones and the gay ones were the easiest to pick out, but I also found the blond ones and the black ones (now gone, alas). There are two couples with iritating mouthy F's and dull (the older one) or stupid (black smear on chin) M's. The rest look like potted plants so far. Maybe they'll show up next week.

A big laugh for me was when Stupid Mouthy one hits the curb and paint cans go flying. Then Stupid Bitchy one rants on forever about it. They truly deserve each other.
Word! They both feed on each other. I would have ingored both of them. And I found it hard to believe the store was going to make them clean up the mess outside. And why was Bitchy Bitch walking through a dept. store when looking for someone/something to clean it up?
And why is the front/side/back door to the condo in the Master bedroom? Isn't that kinda weird? I thought the half wall was a great idea.

I only caught the last hour of the premiere, so I'll have to take the smirky lady's word for it that Rose "sat on [her] ass" and didn't really do anything. Ah, drama! And the black contestants get eliminated immediately. Bah! And also, grrr. I hope they don't pull this extra-long drawn-out crap with the elimination ceremonies every week. It wasn't suspenseful, it was just irritating.
Next week: backstabbing! Looks like fun.

Robohost: The room. . . . with. . . . the. . . . least. . . valuuuuuuueee. . . . issssssss. . . .
Barney: (frantic arm waving) Come on! Get on with it!

I like Jayna and Erik and Rose and Barney the best so far. Rose and Barney are so cute together. Erik and Jayna are the only ones who haven't made stupid cutthroat comments about winning. I think Jayna is shown to a bad advantage by having to live with Sam. Anyone would look dumb or sound dumb if someone was constantly carping at them.
The rest of the couples are meh. I wish they'd voted Sam and her hick off the show. But I guess that's showbiz.

I felt bad for Monique and Shaquille...they didn't deserve to be the first to go.
I stumbled onto this by accident last night and 5 minutes in, I had that "shiiiit, i'm hooked on another reality show!" feeling.
Posted Aug 31, 2004 @ 12:28 PM
I was so sad to see Sanyika and Monique get the boot. I thought they really really got shafted. The gay couple is the only team left that I can tolerate. And I kind of like the bitch Sam’s husband/boyfriend, although…
Word! Except for the gay couple and the seniors, I felt that everyone had lied about their ages a little.
Does he seem a lot older than 30 to anybody else?
Color me shocked that Apt. 4 (NY couples) wasn’t the lowest in value. Gross plywood doors? Budget usage aside, how the hell was that room better than Apt. 1? And what kind of apartments have entrances into the bedrooms?
Posted Aug 31, 2004 @ 12:41 PM
Why would someone want to bid on an apartment that has shoddy workmanship?
I hated that old couple. Seriously, I loathed them so much I will not type their evil names. Chandeliers? Colonial Furniture? WTF?
They remind me of Minnie and Roman Castevet from "Rosemary's Baby." It has to be Satan keeping them alive this long.
Posted Aug 31, 2004 @ 1:23 PM
I think first casualties (aka the black couple. Any black couple) got a raw deal, at least based on what was shown. But oh well, somebody had to get it, might as well be them, no?
Favorite part: the shit stirring and technique at the ceremony. Monique's controlled "call out" on the vote stacking alongside Rose's gutteral yell "You're just mad that we got you before you got us!" Hee. That's the way I like my competitive reality.
Posted Aug 31, 2004 @ 1:50 PM
I actually think this show blows, but there's nothing else to watch on Mondays, so they've got me. Barney is ok, but I'd throttle Rose within minutes. Well, maybe dropping her off the terrace onto her head would be more fun. She'd be bitching all the way down.
Posted Aug 31, 2004 @ 1:59 PM
Rose... I don't wanna call her a bitch right now, so I'll wait and see later.
Uh . . . Rose . . . Honey . . . don't look now, but I'm thinking there may be an iceberg and a harpoon in your future.
One of the unwritten rules of reality shows is that if you have no skills and are basically a waste of carbon atoms, try and fly under the radar.
Rose is way too visible, way to verbal. Her tenure at the Complex will be short-lived, IMO.
