So, let's start over.

Jennifer was ejected. Comments that don't make ridiculously unfounded accusations of racism against the voters are welcome.

I don't think that the results were all the surprising, based on earlier season. I'm sad that Jennifer had to go, and that the three Divas were in the cellar, but there's only so many votes to go around.

This week we had: 1 Male Singer, 1 Male Crooner, 2 PPPs, and 3 Divas. Certain people will only vote for one category, so the "Diva" category was the most vulnerable.

This happened with Tamyra (Two Divas vs. One Male and One "Rocker") and with Trenyce (Two Divas vs. One Country, Soul, and [name deleted]). It's simple statistics.

Can both Latoya and Fantasia make it to the final three? I don't know. I sure hope so. It's possible as the numbers drop, but I expect one of them to fall away when there are four singers left.

Well miss you, Jennifer. I can't wait for the dance remixes to hit.

I think what the past few seasons have shown was that winning American Idol is meaningless. A singer who does not win can still get a record contract and be successful - so if it is meant to be, Jen will be fine. I think American Idol's function has evolved into getting these kids/young adults some publicity to give them an edge in the industry. Jen is in a pretty darn good position - she left the show at the top of her game (and was even improving) and producers will remember that.

Jennifer shouldn't have gone. Even though I split my votes between Jennifer and John Stevens, there's no way in heck she should've gone before Diana, Jasmine, or even John. I liked her. I thought she had the best personality and voice of the three Divas. Fantasia is too Macy Gray. Latoya is too boring. Jennifer had it all and it sucks that she got the boot.

Woohoo!

As I stated, what the heck? Having the 3 best singers in the bottom 3? Insane. I'm just glad I voted for LaToya because if she hadn't been safe I would've been kicking myself.
Crossing my fingers for JS to be put out of his misery next week.

Thank you Shack.

First, that group sing? Worst since "Shine."

Secondly, what the hell was that pimpmercial? Did I take drugs without noticing it?

Third, wow, Paula's hand thing improved rapidly if she went from sling to tiny bandage over night.

Fourth, the hell this is not a popularity contest. What are the judges smoking? They are the ones who started it with picking people based on image rather than actual talent, so for them to accuse us of being stupid is insulting.

Fifth, here's an idea. Why don't people just vote for, you know, who they like best, without any ulterior motives? Nah, that'll never work.

It's too bad, Jennifer's performance was the only one I enjoyed last night, and I admit to being a passenger on the Huffmobile.

I was sure tonight was the end for John Stevens. That's what I predicted for all my friends who ask me to predict, because I can usually gauge it fairly well. Looks like I'll be eating a little crow tomorrow.

I'll tell you what, I haven't been this tickled by a bottom three since...wasn't there one time last year Carmen and Josh were both in it? I was pretty tickled by that one.

I don't care about Jennifer, except to think she's maniacal. Her voice is fine, but she never used it in a way that made me like it. She ended up being rather boring to me.

And she wasn't going to win, so if by her leaving now that means that there's a contestant or two that are horrible left? I'm fine with it.

Heh, thanks Shack. I was having trouble keeping up with the thread anyway!

Because I watched ET I can answer some stuff from the previous thread:

Also, I bet the voting totals fell off significantly from last week. Notice Ryan didn't pompously announce the bazillions of people that voted like he usually does. Guaranteed that with both JPL gone and the fact that last night was almost too boring to sit through lots of people just didnt vote.

ET said that 23.5 million people watched and there were 24 million calls. Why Ryan chose not to announce this I have no clue.

Zion is a girl. And tonight she was in the audience so I'm not sure why she was in a special room last night.

Apparently her family arrived just before Fantasia performed so they were placed in the greenroom.

Oh, can we PLEASE retire the word diva from our vocabulary. I’m already tired of it.

Don’t vote for John people, set him free! I just knew TBTB would boot him before Salsa night. Damn

*A lone figure stands amidst the rubble.*

Yes, new beginnings sound good.

Jennifer was ejected because, well, to quote Sexy Simon: "That's what happens when you let America vote."

Ryan is still a moron, Randy is still useless, and Paula is, clueless as always (she could give Jessica Simpson a run for her money).

In other news, LaToya and Fantasia are probably going to take heed and we will get kick ass performances from them next week.

Oh, and George will be in his prime---after a couple of hours of sobbing on his mother's shoulder. Poor baby.

ETA: I, for one, am looking forward to salsa week because, if done right, it will have America dancing in their living rooms. If it turns out to be horrible then, well, we'll all get a good laugh.

See? Everybody wins.

Awww, Jennifer. I'm bummed out, but not totally surprised. I think she'll land on her feet, though. This show has become so popular at this point, and especially since she'll be on the tour, that all of the top ten finalists have as much of a calling card into the record industry as anyone could hope for. I hope to buy her CD.

I'm glad Diana was safe, I thought she was great last night. And I hope the producers get an on-call shrink for John Stevens. Stat.

I've been with the JSIV hate all season, but this time I think I get why he was in the top four. Maybe even the top! He actually sounded like he was singing a Barry Manilow song! I recognized it! I recognized some of the other songs for the first few lines, but then the singers "made it their own", i.e. unrecognizable. At least he wasn't trying to turn a Manilow song into a gospel revival song or a Celine Dion song. Sure he sucks, but Barry Manilow night is almost by definition an invitation for bland, whitebread singers to shine.

I actually felt bad for John when Paula pointed out that Jasmine and Diana improved last night in a kind of "it's not outrageous that they are safe" kind of way, after the announcement of the "safe" group was made.

I don't think that any of the contestants but George would have bumbled his way across the stage without asking Ryan which group was the "top" one.

Most entertaining results show ever. The only thing better, IMO, would have been if Fantasia went home. I'm not a fan of the big female voice. IMO, we just saw the results of too many singers deemed to be in the same category.

Did anyone besides me think that Simon et al knew the results before they revealed them. There are a couple of shots before they announced the bottom three were he looked pissed/depresed (and was holding Paula's hand - ick)!
Jen rocks. And, Fantasia was great with her. And, didn't poor little George looked like he was going to meld into the couch waiting to find out whether he was safe. Then, when he cried, it was totally sweet.
Thanks Shak for keeping the episode thread under control!

What the fucking fuck?

I don't even know what to say. I've really enjoyed Jennifer over the past few weeks and the fact she gets better and better each week was another bonus. However, come on! The other bottom two?? No way in hell they deserved to be there.

DiBot needs to go. Now.
John Stevens needs to go. Last week.
George Huff just needs to get the hell off my TV with his stupid face. I hate you.

This show gets worse and worse for me each week. In Fantasia gets voted off, I really don't see any one left that I'd care about. Maybe LaToya, but it doesn't look good for her either.

Die America. Die.

So yeah. I didn't get the chance to read most of the comments from the now-deleted previous thread, but I totally agree with those who said that while surprising, it isn't really hard to comprehend how this happened. We all tend to lump the Divas together, and if this isn't a really obvious case of split-the-vote, I don't know what is.

To be honest, I am kinda surprised that we didn't see a more princess-loaded bottom three, but I fully expect to see one next week.

Ok, I've calmed down now. The thought of racial bias never even entered my mind before I came on the boards, so, <shrug> whatever. I still think it would be horrendously funny and a giant slap in the face to TPTB if John Stevens was the next Idol...... but here's what I came back to say:

How can you be in spacesuits and helmets on Mars when your helmets have HOLES in them? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of wearing a helmet? Seriously, watch it again and you'll see nice little openings at the mouth and ears of their helmets..... HEE!!!

I really hope that's not supposed to be Barry Manilow's hit song off of his new albulm. That song sounded like something you hear at a 5th grade choir concert. And the glow sticks, very tacky ( unless they were a shout out to the Simpson's episode when Lisa's band loses at the county fair).

J-Hu is gone because it's spite. Talent's out, spite, pranking, and cute inoffensive boys are back in. I could deal with Jennifer going, it's the Bottom 3 that upsets me so. I hope LaToya and Fantasia tear this shit apart for the end.

Apparently we've all had Doobie-Vision installed in our homes without our knowing about it, because that was off-the-charts bizarre.

So ahh...the very beginning of the group sing caused my ears to go into some sort of narcoleptic hibernation in less than a second. That was about the snooziest sing ever.

I'm kinda glad to see Jennifer gone - I didn't like her voice - she sounded like 2 or 3 different people depending where in her range she was singing - it was just weird and distracting.

I didn't like Fantasia this week, but I loved her last week, so I'm glad she stayed. And, while I didn't vote this week - I'm a JS voter - he's different, and I'd like to see how he can develop that, rather than being just another pop singer. Fantasia's Summertime was the only performance with a similar feel to what JS is trying to do. I don't think Fantasia's bits of attitude are costing her - even Simon seems to enjoy the bit of banter, and she's keeping the attitude well short of arrogance, which is what gets singers booted.

I think it demonstrated that even if Barry Manilow's pop songwriting skills have atrophied, he still knows how to crank out a soul-sucking jingle.

I think Jenn was a victim of a combination of two things: Diva Split vote, and the fact that severe weather hit her home area last night. People DIED in northern Illinois last night from tornados and severe storms. If people had power and were able to watch TV, it was probably being interrupted constantly, not to mention fucked up phone lines. Not having her voting base would be like Hawaii not being able to vote for Jasmine, and Diana losing her home base Georgia vote.

Hmmm...that actually sound like a plan. Any weather fronts passing through those areas next Tuesday?

John? People, this is CHILD ABUSE. The boy WANTS to go home. He's probably got the business cards of every child psychologist in his fucking hometown, stuffed into his family's mailbox as we speak. They're lining up, thinking that this boy is the key to that new Lexus they've been eyeballing for months.
