Thanks for the memories Steve! I'd forgotten what some of those people looked like. Audra Lindley was the "evil" Liz, omg, my grandmother used to get so upset at her...she'd go off into the kitchen and start beating cake batter and muttering to herself.

I wish I could see photos of Ann Tyler, dead baby and husband to refresh my memory...was her husband the very dark-haired guy with big eyebrows?

Some photos here of Ann and Paul.

I think he was also on the cover of Digest with Kathleen Noone. That's online somewhere.

Strangely enough, my hubby and I were just talking about Ryan's Hope. I always loved that Maeve never had "granny" hair, she always had the lovely bob. I decided as a very young girl that when I grew up I was going to be a granny that looked like Maeve. LOL. Not like the other soaps grannies, which were nowhere near as elegant.

So how is everyone holding up? Did anyone write a novel or something with all our spare time. I must say I'm a bit too excited about the prospect of seeing a 30 year old soap opera tomorrrow!

Here's a recap, and three things that stuck out in my mind more than storyline...lol

Johnny and Maeve made up in the kitchen, Delia interrupted their kiss and proceeded to tell them about a drunk Jack showing up at the CP. She leaves and that starts Johnny and Maeve arguing again.

Thing #1 - during their makeup kiss, Maeve started to stroke Johnny's hair, probably as a natural reaction, then stopped short and just patted him on the head. I guess she was afraid the toupee would slide off.

Joe gets Barry to agree to manage the "Monte Carlo" room, which is what he's calling the gambling operation. He tells Barry that it's all for charity, that the money isn't real and all proceeds will go to St. Alowishes children's fund, Maeve's favorite charity. Barry agrees to everything in order to pay off his debt to Joe.

Joe lets Delia in on the secret, telling her that instead of poker chips people will be playing with Delia Dollars. Her eyes light up and she starts running her mouth about hostessing the MC room, even after Joe tells her it's Orson's operation. He doesn't mention Barry.

Rae is fawning all over this antique pram she bought for the baby. Kim comes in and tells her it's not enough. Rae then starts running down the list of all the things she's going to do for "it" when "it" is born. Later on, Seneca comes over and Rae tries to get rid of him. Kim comes in and jumps all over Seneca, thinking he's come to take her home. He then informs her he's getting the divorce, since she's handed him grounds, and that if the blood tests prove the baby is his, he's going to sue for custody. That gets Rae raving, and Kim still doesn't get it. It takes a few more rounds of Seneca telling her he doesn't intend to stay married to her or to let her raise their baby before Kim comes to her senses and tells him he'll never get her child. Even with Rae promising to help her, Kim is defiant and say she's not scared of Seneca.

Jill just waltzes into Faith's bedroom and starts to try to explain her partnership with Frank. It's more of the same old thing, Faith telling Jill that she's not her sister, that she's always gotten everything she wants...I really did think we'd see a good catfight/pillowfight there for a moment. Did anyone else think those sheets were hideous?

Faith gets all dolled up in a red sequin dress with some big ornate gold necklace (foreshadowing of the Egyptian story??) and wants Roger to go out with her. They get into the "Frank does it again" discussion, with Roger getting mad and trying to make Faith stay at home. I kind of wish he had succeeded because of Thing #2.....

WHO carries a copper-colored purse with a red sequin dress and gold jewelry?? If they went to all the trouble to find a sparkly purse, at least buy a gold one!! Just seeing that under her arm, her stuffing the big hairbrush in there...such very badly matched accessories make me ill.

Fruits wants Orson to take out Jack, NOW.... Joey is dragging his heels and Fruits is not happy about that.

Orson comes onto the balcony across from Jack's apt., struggling to get the binoculars to his eyes because instead of hanging them around his neck (that's Thing #3, who wears binoculars like that??), he's got them strapped under his arm. I don't see a silencer on the rifle either, that's going to make a loud noise.

Jack's moving back and forth faster than a metal duck at the county fair. Orson can't get a shot with him bobbing and weaving. We end our show with Orson poised to take a shot, Jack still talking into the recorder, saying "If anything happens to me....."

Well, we all know it won't but on that day there must have been some people on the edge of their seats.

First episode:

The morning after their argument, Maeve and Johnny still weren't speaking to each other. In the kitchen, after Maeve returns from church and Johnny returns from walking the dog, they begin to talk, and cling to each other, upset over what has happened to them and swearing it won't happen again. Delia unwittingly spoils the reconciliation by telling them what Roger had told her about Jack's drunken outburst at the Crystal Palace. They begin arguing again and Delia, realizing what she has done, feels bad and tells them Roger was probably lying. She then leaves before eating breakfast. Maeve says Delia isn't used to seeing them like that, it scares her, and Maeve says it scares her too. Johnny keeps on about Jack hitting him in the nose and Maeve says she might hit him in the nose too, and she means it. She calls him "sir," and I love the way Helen Gallagher says it.

Joe, still wearing his ice cream salesman outfit, talks to Barry about the casino and says it will go to St. Alawicious (I know that's spelled wrong, I'm too tired to check the right one) which he knows is Maeve's favorite charity. He asks Barry to work as the casino manager to work off his debt.

Rae, wearing a gold dressing gown which was maybe the inspiration for Mrs. Peacock's dress in Clue, blathers on to Kimbo about the amazing plans for Kimbambino, and shows her a fancy buggy. Kimbo whines about how she never had a father but this baby will and Rae can't stop her. Kimbo says again she will get Seneca back. Meanwhile, Seneca is in thought about Kimbo and goes to see her.

Joe shuts down any attempt by Delia to protest Orson's hiring. Delia, in a very cowered way which makes me sad, hugs herself and doesn't disagree. Delia changes the subject to the fight with Maeve and Ryan over Jack. Joe cheers her up by telling her about the casino and the use of "Delia Dollars." Joe says that he wants her to be hostess of the restaurant but Orson will run the casino. Delia says she will now believe him about Orson and she wants to be hostess of the casino too because it wouldn't be the same about her. Joe's grin suddenly becomes...a bit forced.

Maeve and Johnny continue to argue over Ryan's welfare. Maeve says think of Mary and how she would want them to feel about Jack. Johnny says he has put up with Jack because of Mary, and that he is worried about Ryan because of Mary. He tells her she is condoning Jack. Maeve says Johnny disappoints her. Maeve says Jack has lost so much - his job, Rose, Mary. Johnny said he never deserved Mary. Maeve says he blackens Mary's memory by denying her feelings for Jack. Then they talk about their fears for Ryan. Maeve says that is where they will have a common bond because when Johnny talks about Ryan that is the only time she recognizes him. She says the only other time she hurt this much was...presumably when Mary died.

Seneca drops in when Rae is about to leave for a business meeting, carrying a briefcase which seems to be protected with a beaded car cover. Kimbo clings to Seneca as he says he wants full custody of Kimbaby. She says she wants him and she will be with him and she's so happy. He says tough cookies, he doesn't want her Kimbutt, he only wants the baby and will divorce her and take the baby. Rae tries to get involved and Seneca shoots her down, leading to a shouting match. This leads to what must be the VERY FIRST reference to Rae not being there for Kim as a child. They say they will fight in court. Kimbrat tells Seneca that now she knows he never loved her. He denies that, but she says too bad, so sad, he will never have the miracle child again. He grabs her but Rae stops him. He says he's watched them and will fight them. Rae tries to comfort the brat but Kimbitter says don't worry, mama, I'm not afraid, Seneca will never have my baby, ever!

Oh good, I see Philip has saved me and everyone else from having to read another of my tortured recaps, thanks to his concise work. Thanks!

Jill just waltzes into Faith's bedroom and starts to try to explain her partnership with Frank

The best part of that was Faith listening to "Words of Love" by the Mamas and the Papas. She has better taste than I thought. I thought she'd have sat around listening to "All By Myself" over and over.

I "LOLed" when Faith half-heartedly rolled on the bed.

I couldn't help being slightly creeped out when he was going on about how he wanted to stay home and admire the scenery (her). I wondered if she might say "Oh you're the only man who loves me" and try to make a pass at him. Ugh.

Seneca's under 40? Not in the current episodes, right? John Gabriel had just hit 50 when these aired.

If Rae were really smart in preparing for a custody battle, she should have called the police immediately after Seneca grabbed Kim and had him arrested for assault and battery. It's never too early to start building your case, and what Seneca did was against the law. Incidents of violence don't look good when you're suing for custody.

I was thinking exactly the same thing about Faith and her ugly necklace. And her pity party is getting way old. What else can Jill take from her? Well, that expensive brownstone for one thing. Why does Faith get to have practically the whole thing to herself while Roger's stuck in the basement and Jill doesn't even get to live there. Granted, the mausoleum decor is more Faith's style, but still.

The other thing that cracked me up about Faith today was how she was ranting and raving about "introducing myself to the world" (she said it a couple of times). Huh? It reminded me of that "Brady Bunch" episode where Jan bought the wig to get out from out of Marcia's shadow and was going to introduce "The New Jan Brady" at a party. "It's the new Faith Coleridge! Am I a hit?"

What WAS that thing she had on? Big old quilted gold satin Oriental loooooooong gown. Who dresses like that? Not even Rae, in her right mind...it was almost like a CAFtan, but not quite.

If Joe had on a bow tie, I'd have started humming the Good Humor song. Good call, Steve. :)

Kyle, great observation about Faith. You're right, she did come across as Jan Brady. Shaking her head a little Kimberly-esque just for good measure.

LOL, Phil, I was also struck by the horrible purse Faith decided went well with her red dress - and I thought it odd that she put those huge gold leafy earrings on right over the posts she already had in her ears. I did like her lounging outfit earlier (the one she changed the bed and was doing light housework in, lol) but thought Jill's sun dress looked hideous and emphasized the wrong features of her body (flat chest) and made her look very hippy. Yes, Words of Love (Mama Cass) was so appropriate for Faith to be using to continue to stew over her sister's betrayal - I say her sister's b/c apparently she doesn't really blame Frank all that much - or at least not enough for my taste. I agree - the Pity Me Faith party is just about done - just turn out the lights Faith. I'm betting she'll hold on to this bone though until someone else walks into her life and fawns all over her extraordinary beauty. However, once again, great hair!

I also noticed how Maeve's hand just almost touched Johnny's (Bernie's) toup but thought better of it! LOL.

Oh my Seneca hatred was in full force today! I was just wishing that Rae had a surveillance camera on him as he shook and threatened a pregnant woman (one most likely carrying HIS Kimbambino - that's a keeper ;o) he made me sick I must say with all his controlling bullshit and saying she gave him all the ammunition he'll need in court to win sole custody, even though Rae pointed out that the courts favor the mother. I just hate Seneca enough to want to see Kimbo raise her own Kimbrat!

The binoculars! I guess that was just about the only way to carry them seeing as how he had that huge gun case to lug up the fire escape - and put that gun together before he could use it. I thought it had actually misfired but I guess he was just doing a practice shoot - did I see a white light on Jack's neck? I was looking for a red one, but wasn't sure those were in use back then. Orson was looking kind of really cute then - except for the weapon in his hand.

I was also kind of skeeved at Roger's admiring his sister's figure??? Yikes - and I also thought of the coming Egyptian SL that we won't get to see at all.

I know I am in the minority, but I'm hoping Jack gets shot. To death. I think it would give the show some good drama - poor Ryan, having both parents murdered; Maeve and Johnny could continue running to church and walking the dog solo with this latest tragedy tearing them apart; Rose could become a vengeful evil bitch infiltrating the mob by seducing Joe away from ShaVawwn; and best of all, Jack would be dead. It's win-win for the show and the audience.

I too was expecting a catfight between the sisters. I guess this was the pre-TVCatfight era before Dynasty made it popular and soaps routinely had women slugging each other every other month.

Jill needs to give it up and let Faith deal with her own anger. Insisting Faith accept her as her sister - soon after her fiance canceled the wedding because he's in love with Jill. Jeez, walking into her bedroom and not taking NO for an answer takes big ones. I love angry Faith and love KLG. She looked gorgeous all dolled up as her brother undressed her with his creepy eyes.

I was shocked that Seneca would physically grab 80 pound and pregnant Kimberly. Yea she's pushed his buttons, but he is a doctor and should know the stress he is putting her under, and grabbing at her was even more crazy. I wonder if it's the time, 30 years ago. As Kyle said, Rae should have had him arrested for assault - but was this type of behavior of a man man-handling a woman - more acceptable 3 decades ago? I've been watching Dynasty on DVD which was around this period, and it seemed acceptable for a man to grab a woman, shake her, shove her, etc. all of which is clearly assault.

I loved the Maeve/Johnny stuff. The looks, the silence, the dialogue, their kiss. All so cute. Now I made myself sick.

This gun of Orson's is driving me nuts.....yesterday it looked like your regular-issue hunting rifle. Today in the opening scene of the first episode it looked like maybe now it has a silencer. Then at the end of episode 1 - after Orson has had it up to his eye 30 times - it's definitely got a silencer on the end. Yet, when he finally pulls the trigger and we see Jack fall on the rabbit...you hear a huge gunshot outside. LMAO, get it right, will ya??!!

Chiffon is running around like a rabbit trying to keep Speed quiet so Joe won't find out she's applied to the police academy, which just makes Delia and Roger all the more curious. Faith is so caught up in being the center of his attention span she doesn't care. I hate it when they make Delia come up and butt in, making herself look all the more stupid. "I was just joking!" and yet Roger's got her number about her sadistic nature.

"I'm successful, and I'm rich, and I don't need anybody" Dee screeches.... but she's not, is she? Any of those things.

I wish Johnny and Maeve would stop arguing and go to bed. I'm getting tired just watching them.

With both Roger and Bob glaring at Faith's new friend, Jim Speed, it's creeping me out....given everyone's observations yesterday about Roger admiring his sister's looks, etc. He said again tonight how "if she wasn't my sister....." I know Roger is a cad, and later has that thing going on with Jill's sister, but still....have some ethics, man!

And suddenly now Delia is going to be hostess at the Monte Carlo room?? Didn't Joe just tell her yesterday that Orson was in charge???? I hate these flipflops with no explanation.

....and the entire room stares as Faith allows Jim to order champagne for the two of them.... I sense bongos in their future.....Jack not only had the bongos, he had drums and a swishing sound made by a brush on the cymbals!

I thought this just made Roger look like an ass. Delia is an easy target, but his own sadism is something he pretends does not exist, not to mention the sadistic, cruel behavior from his precious sister. I hated the scenes with Delia and Roger. Just endless whining and shrieking from Delia. It was pathetic that he had to grab her arm and march her out of the room because poor poor Faith could not handle someone mentioning her engagement to Frank, when Faith herself all but put out an ad in the paper telling everyone Frank had done her wrong and she was just fine now because she had seen the truth and the way. Faith doesn't get to do that and then become the injured bird as soon as someone else brings it up.

Ron Hale and Randall Edwards don't work very well together, although it doesn't help that the writing for them has never been great. Every Delia/Roger scene boils down to Roger lecturing her as she screams. She is annoying, but if I had to put up with Roger's endless psychoanalysis and smugness I would scream too. She had to flap her arms enough to where I thought those faux feathers might help her take flight.

"I'm successful, and I'm rich, and I don't need anybody" Dee screeches.... but she's not, is she? Any of those things.

I think that's one of the reasons they had her say it, because she was trying to convince herself.

With both Roger and Bob glaring at Faith's new friend, Jim Speed, it's creeping me out....given everyone's observations yesterday about Roger admiring his sister's looks, etc.

Not to mention Delia saying if Faith wasn't his sister...

I think Faith met her match in the plastic department. As she stooped over from her chunky necklace and delivered her usual blatherings, "Speed" matched her for mannequin meticulousness. He seems like a nice guy but I think it's a bit cruel to give someone with a lisp a last name starting with an "S."

Bob is just unwatchable now. I am sick of his constant glaring and glowering. He reminds me more and more of that tall, perpetually unhappy looking thing in the old Popeye comics, Alice the Goon.

And suddenly now Delia is going to be hostess at the Monte Carlo room?? Didn't Joe just tell her yesterday that Orson was in charge???? I hate these flipflops with no explanation.

I think Joe went along with Delia after she was so thrilled over the idea and acted like she was going to be a hostess. He probably knew if he tried to stop her she's get suspicious.

I don't like what Joe has done to Delia but they had some nice chemistry in that scene, especially when they were trashing Faith. You can see the type of connection which probably led Randall and Roscoe to get married.

I wish Johnny and Maeve would stop arguing and go to bed. I'm getting tired just watching them.

Those scenes are the same thing over and over and over but the actors make them work.

Jack not only had the bongos, he had drums and a swishing sound made by a brush on the cymbals!

I thought these scenes were suspenseful but then when they got to the start of the second episode I couldn't help laughing because the sound effect was close to the start of the Petticoat Junction theme song.

I will say Jack has more chemistry with that tape recorder than he had with the last few Marys.

The way Jack kept tossing the tape recorder onto the bed, you have to wonder.

Another thing I noticed about RE as Delia this morning, and it's been during other scenes too...she seems to be either drunk or on something. She screeches and moves around in a slow-motion kind of way, it's hard to put my finger on. Today it was especially notable the way she slurred some of her words. I've seen actors under the influence before and she's not all there sometimes.

Roger did what he did because the writers thought that's what the audience wanted....for someone to take Delia by the arm and take her down a peg or two. All of these people forget their own shortcomings when they are dishing it out to someone else, Johnny Ryan being a notable one in that category.

The "beautiful" people on soap operas always get a free pass.

Ok guys, here's my two cents about this morning's episodes.

Interesting dress on Chiffon. Yep, that copper purse Faith had was ugly and it was so flat, I was wondering what she could have had in it. Good for Delia for speaking up when Faith allowed Speed to order the champagne. From the look on Faith's face I really think she would have drank it had Delia not said anything. And, speaking of Delia, didn't she say to Roger, "boy, if I didn't know she was your sister..."

All the scenes of Orson and the gun, I kept thinking "Mike Roy" and "Erica Kane". It was hysterical when that disco music broke out while Orson was on that roof. You know what I thought? Cell phone ring tone! Then those people laughing later. All that noise, I was wondering how was it that he could hear all that noise from the roof? Jack had it all this morning - bongos, oboes, cymbals, but apparently not any underwear! I'm usually not a pervert when it comes to Jack (because, Yuck - it's Jack), but at one point, I think he was on the bed, things looked loose.

He's got this growly, breathy Vincent Price-esque voice that gets growlier and breathier as he gets madder. You all making me laugh with your observations. The music with Jack was just too much. I watched both of Monday's episodes and read the 2 wonderful recaps and realized I missed alot! I am always doing something else, and then rewinding to see what I missed.
Bob is a goon and it sure was creepy the way Bob, Delia and Roger are butting into the Faith and Jim Speed meeting. I know why Jack is doing what he's doing but I can't see that he would ever leave Ryan like that, there were other ways to do it.

I could not believe how Kimbo popped and yes, Catmama, Seneca was at his all time high for annoying berating behaviour. I too thought Maeve would knock Johnny's troupee off and realized this! I don't know how a person could sleep with those high collars chocking them with all the ruffles.

I hated Joe's white suit and he is on my last nerves. His only redeeming quality to me is that he is nice to Delia, and I loved how he dissed Faith! I keep trying to picture them in a real life marriage and I just can't.

Really? I had no idea! Married in '82 and divorced in '90. That will color my perception of their scenes now!

It was hysterical when that disco music broke out while Orson was on that roof.

And did you all notice it was a 'real' song? Some Kool and the Gang thing? Shoots all to hell that old excuse about not showing the rest of the shows from '82 on b/c the music rights were too expensive.

I have to say sometimes I'd like to see Jack bite the big one too! But he's a big part of the show apparently. I didn't notice his 'looseness' but did take the time to imagine that body naked, the guy is/was fit, you have to give him that. Something about his prone body lying on the floor was attractive to me - faux death perhaps, LOL.

LMAO at how he scrambled around the room when he thought the shooter was, oh, I don't know, reloading, listening to Kool and the Gang? He did react like an old trooper - knew enough to lay low while shot rang out, cymbals clashed, horns blared and the cows came home.

Bob is a cartoon absolutely! What a waste. I'd rather see that little 'Home Improvement' fence on a stick in front of his face!

During the elder Ryan's lively discussion all I could see was Maeve's teeth (I'm currently teeth obsessed having just gotten an upper plate) and gosh, they are completely imperfect! On TV and a soap no less! How things have changed (and not for the better in that dept.)

Johnny is a pain in the ass a lot of the time - I still like him, but I'm going over to Steve's POV lately. For a barkeep, he's very critical of drunks. I guess we should suppose that any time anyone at Ryan's starts to indulge too much, they are thrown out on the street - I guess it is just b/c it's Jack who is supposed to be a drunk.

UGH, enough with the Roger admires his sister and if she wasn't his sister........ crap! It's skeeving me out.

LOL at Maeve's nightgown up to there. She's probably wearing her wedding night dressing gown that her dear old sainted Ma gave her back when she was a mere lass of 17 and new to NYC and the bed of Lt. John Ryan. 'Just close yer eyes and t'will be over soon darlin...tiz the sad duty of a wife.'

LMAO!!! That is so dead-on, sounds a lot like something Maeve would tell her own daughters. And yes, her teeth are baaaaaad. None of the actors on this show had their teeth fixed. You either had nice teeth or you didn't.

I was really hoping they would have used "Fire" by the Ohio Players instead of Kool and the Gang....but you are right about the music stuff, that's horse malarkey!

When Jack was "shot" and hit the floor, he braced his fall, I was laughing out loud and hoping he didn't squish the bunny. I was already laughing about Orson and his big gun silencer, which obviously didn't work since the entire neighborhood heard that one.

We have seen a few more popular tunes creeping in lately. And that costs money. Yes, they licensed this one for rerun. But it's one thing to license a couple of songs, and another to license the music for all the remaining episodes.

That alternative would be to remove the songs, that would cost money as well. My guess is that it could be a nightmare to separate the music and dialog tracks - a low budget show like Ryan's probably didn't separate them. And as much as it costs to re-license the music, it also costs money to go through all the episodes simply to figure out where the music is being used. They may not have kept records of this, because who would have known back then that there would be a market for the reruns. And if they did keep records, they're buried in a box somewhere, because assets like this weren't tracked electronically back then. So someone would have to dig all that up, if they even still have the papers. It all adds up to $$$.

It comes down to this: they are not going to spend one more dime prepping old reruns of RH to run in a 5:00 am slot. It's more economical to run what's already been prepped and converted.
