If you are Jewish it only means ethnicity and some cultural jokes. Never, ever, ever, will you be shown actually practicing your religion in any way that is serious. Because TV has taught me that Juadaism only exists as a joke.
Whereas, Catholic detectives on Law & Order occasionally are seen in church.
Sole exception that I can think of is Charlotte visiting the mikveh in SATC. Long ago there was a bris taken seriously on Thirtysomething.
Also, Jews are not over represented on TV, which largely has shows set in urban areas where Jews tend to be much more than 2% of the population (as they certainly are in NYC). Those few shows set In Texas, the Middle, etc, typically have no Jewish characters. But then again no characters on TV that I can think of are actually Jewish apart from ethnicity, I.e name, bagels, etc. can't remember the last time anybody on TV eschewed bread on Pesach or actually took a Bar Mitzvah seriously.
If you are having a Bar Mitzvah on Television, all you care about is the gifts. You don't care about what it means or have a Mitzvah project.
And so far as Mad About you, if you are a Jewish male, you have a non Jewish blonde wife. Your Jewishness consists of your background and nothing else.
