Late response, but:

So do we know that Nimoy has ever suffered from arthritis? Clearly there's plenty of love for him here, but he might just be acting. And doing a fine job of it, given our reaction.

Aren't celebrities used to endorse products in commercials supposed to actually USE those products? That's what I thought.
Cleo256
I don't think so. As long as the celebrity isn't saying something like, "I actually use this product", I don't think they've broken any truth in advertising laws. At least not the US.

Such a rule would probably be impossible to enforce. Where is the line between a celebrity advocating a product's use and an actor playing in a fictional situation?
RealChic1999
I rented "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" yesterday and that movie is creepy as hell. Though I've seen Leonard Nimoy in other roles, this one convinced me that he is definitely not Spock. His arrogant, condescending and touchy-feel quack/shrink reminded me of Dr. Phil.
Harrison Fjord
Heh.

I'm always fond of Nimoy on the Simpsons. I wish that happened more often.

"Do you even know who I am?"
"I think so. Weren't you one of the Little Rascals?"
tothemax
Well, my work is done here.
What do you mean your work is done? You didn't do anything!
(cocks eyebrow) Didn't I? *is transported away*
nelamm
"Hey, Spock, whaddya want on your hotdog?"

"Sur-PRISE me!"

(Another episode.)

I just read that Mary Kay Adams, who played Grilka (and was regular on B5) is a member of the famous Adams family (John, Quincey, etc.). Cool.
belsum
Oooh, nelamm, that's very cool. Mr. b will be so excited to hear that! Where did you read it?
nelamm
Wikipedia- yeah, I know, I'm checking the links there now to see if it's really true.
Anabanana
This was mentioned a year ago, but I thought it'd be ok to point it out again:
Jeffery Combs is playing some kind of deranged dude (go figure!) on The 4400.
Belchimaera
He's not really deranged. He's a scientist who's experimenting on himself.

Okay, when put that way, he is deranged.

But Jeffrey Combs is doing a great job.
Peachy Keen
I did not realize that Matt Winston (Daniels, ENT) had a recurring role on John Doe. Probably because I stopped watching before he got there.
belsum
I've seen Jeri Ryan twice this weekend in random things. She was on Iron Chef America because the chef at her restaurant was battling Morimoto. She was also the only presenter at some awards show shown in full in the segment of Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List I accidentally watched.

Another Trek alum showed up on The 4400 this past week: Alice Krige, the Borg Queen. Understandably, I almost didn't recognize her.
nelamm
Norman Mineta's retirement led someone at National Review to mention that he was the only Bush cabinet member played by a Star Trek cast member (George Takei). He was quickly corrected:

Penny Johnson (Condoleezza Rice) appeared in multiples episodes of DS9 and an episode of TNG.
Gregory Itzin (John Ashcroft) appeared in multiple episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise, and DS9, and an epidode of Star Trek:Voyager.
Stephen Macht (Paul Wolfowitz) appeared in multiple episodes of DS9.
Lawrence Pressman (Dick Cheney) appeared in several episodes of DS9.
Scott Alan Smith (Ari Fleisher) appeared in an episode of Star Trek: Voyager.
Allan Royal (Karl Rove) appeared in multiple episodes of Star Trek: Voyager.

Whew.

I recognized the name at the beginning, but I really recognized her not by looks, but her eerie, hypnotic voice.

Oh, and I recently read an article online about Ira Steven Behr (who helms the 4400) and apparently he and Jeff Combs are like BFFs.
keckler

Wait! What was the name of the chef? She's married to a French chef -- they own a few restaurants together in LA, he was the one who came into the cheese shop with her. Fuck! I can't believed I missed that one!
belsum
It was the week of June 18th episode; is that him? Jeri seemed awfully stressed by the whole thing. She even mentioned to Kevin Brauch how she thought she was going to throw up! I thought it was a bit much for just a chef--makes more sense if it was her husband. She also mentioned that the reason he only had one sous chef with him wasn't pride; they simply couldn't afford to have that much staff away from the restaurant at once.
Morimoto vs. Eme
Iron Chef Morimoto is challenged by Chef Eme of Ortolan Restaurant in Los Angeles. Chef Eme has come to Kitchen Stadium with only one sous chef. Can this team of two take on Iron Chef Morimoto and claim their cuisine reigns supreme?
keckler
That's him. Damn.
Peachy Keen
The talented John Billingsley (Phlox, ENT) was on The Closer last Monday night. He played a food critic and a man unlucky at love.
SnippyScholar
I saw ol' Seven on Iron Chef America. She shed a few tears for her dear one at the end of the show. Aaaaaaw.

I just noticed that Patrick Stewart was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series, for Extras. Yay! That was a funny episode, and he was great.

Also, Cap'n Kirk was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, for that icky lawyer show he's in.
chancellorjake

It may be an icky lawyer show, but William Shatner is so incredibly awesome as Denny Crane*. I really hope that he wins because it is well deserved.
He's awesome I tell you. Awesome.

*Yes, I am Boston Legal's bitch. Why do you ask?
geekchic9
Well, Gregory Itzin, a character actor who has been in episodes of DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise, was also nominated for an Emmy today for his role on 24. And sorry, chancellorjake, I hope he beats Shatner, especially since iirc, Shatner won the Best Supporting Actor award the previous two years. Give someone else a chance, man.

ETA:

Adding to this, the miniseries where Penny Johnson plays Rice (which I thought was taped a couple of years ago) is now called The Path to 9/11 and will air on ABC September 10-11.
nelamm
That's odd. It was "DC 9/11: Time of Crises" when it aired about three years ago, and it's not really about the "path" to 9/11.
Anabanana
Just noticed in TV Guide that SG:Atlantis is coming back this week, which means that CT might make an appearance.
belsum
Indeed he is. Gateworld says he'll be in the first two eps. I didn't look any further for fear of spoilers.
keckler
Okay, I had to share this pain because only you guys can truly appreciate this. I'm recapping "Top Chef" now and Katie Lee Joel aka Mrs. Roboto has been fired from her hosting duties. Who on earth could they get to replace such a wooden woman? Why, ANOTHER wooden woman, of course. Yep, Padma Lakshmi? The new host of "Top Chef."
nqllisi
Oh, my gosh. Heh. My condolences.
dbrugg
CT's appearance in yesterday's Atlantis was relatively small. And while recognizable, he's working the alien makeup.

As for Princess Whines a Lot (Lakshmi), she was recently in that ongoing feature in Esquire "10 Things You Don't Know About Women." Like before, nothing memorable. But she has a rather large scar on her right arm, so big props to the Enterprise makeup department.

Even if I was half the foodie keckler is, I can't see putting up with watching all of Top Chef, much less recapping it. Guh. But I can't stand any of the competition cooking shows, save Iron Chef American (including the version with the Shat as the chairman).
Peachy Keen
Not to belittle your pain Keckler, but when I think of Princess Popsicle (Lakshmi), I do think of both ham and cheese. No wonder they put her in a food show.

I like Connor working the alien make-up in the Gate. It works right into my eye candy of Shep, Lorne and Caldwell. (What? It's not like that show has a working plot at the moment!)

Actually, this week in the Chicago Sun-times, it was mentioned that the two are just engaged but plan to marry next year in France. Here's the link to the mini-article (maybe I should put it in the Media thread, but since it was brought up here)

Or much of a writing staff. SG1 managed to make me hate Claudia Black, I hope Atlantis doesn't do the same for CT. Picardo manages to make his drivel not suck, and that must be a chore.
Mistral
I just saw Vash shilling arthritis medicine. Wow, that lady has not aged well.
SnippyScholar
Comedy Central is having a roast of William Shatner. "The Shat hits the fan." Heh.
keckler
Jeez -- who will they call on to roast him? Nimoy? Spader? Locklear?

Seriously, Nichols, Takei, and Koenig will be probably mean-angry rather than mean-funny.
Gilmel
As long as they don't use Triumph the Comic Dog, I'll be happy.
Chyromaniac
I'm pretty sure they'll at least get a video clip from Nimoy, and possibly Patrick Stewart. Beyond that I don't think anyone else from Trek will be involved- either they won't want to be there (Koenig, Nichols, Takei), or Comedy Central won't call them. Nice call with Locklear- on the Spillover thread I said that I'd be happy with any reference to TJ Hooker, so having Heather there would be awesome.

In general though, the roasters are probably going to consist of the CC regulars- Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, Stephen Colbert (which would "rock"), Kathleen Madigan, whoever's left from the old Colin Quinn "Tough Crowd" show, etc... Otherwise, if I were a betting man, I'd wager big on Kevin Pollack showing up to do his Shatner impression.
cutecouple
I'd bet on someone or two from Boston Legal, and maybe Candice Bergen.
cutecouple
More on the upcoming roast, including a list of roasters.
Gilmel
Toasters Include Andy Dick, Greg Giraldo, Lisa Lampanelli, Artie Lange, Patton Oswalt, Kevin Pollak, Jeffrey Ross, Sharon Stone, Nichelle Nichols, George Takei, Betty White, Fred Willard
Wow. That's a surprise.

But now I'd have to put up with Andy Dick to watch it. Decisions, decisions.
Coup Shiva
Didn't see this before:

From Ausiello on TVGuide, August 9: "In other 24 news, former Star Trek: Deep Space Nine doc Alexander Siddig is joining the cast as one of the evildoers behind the big Season 6 plot."

(Edited for mistype.)
nqllisi
Oh, yay! I love him, and I love 24. I hope he sticks around for a bit, though- some of the 24 baddies come and go pretty quickly.
RealChic1999
Wow. That's a surprise.

I know. No Nimoy? Huh. He's Shatner's BFF. Maybe he'll make a "secret special guest appearance"---hell, who am I kidding?

When I read the description of the roasters being close friends, Nichelle Nichols and George Takei are not who I have in mind. There's no friendship happening there.
rose89
I don't know if anyone has put this, but Scott Bakula will be on a few episodes of The New Adventures of Old Christine. That's pretty much all the info on it I have because he was at a Cardinals game and they asked him what he was up to. I'm not exactly setting my TiFaux, but I thought I'd post it.

And as for the Shatner roast, they have to have Nimoy; they can't roast Kirk without Spock. I also hope they'll have James Spader on, but that's an altogether different board.
RealChic1999
Okay...I was right! Nimoy makes a guest appearance...in a video telling Shatner why he won't be there.

Make It So
I have GOT to see this roast. I may rag on Shatner a lot, but he is entertaining.

I read in this morning's paper that Andy Dick got drunk at the roast and started licking people, including Nichelle. Has he no honor?
Gilmel
I read in this morning's paper that Andy Dick got drunk at the roast and started licking people, including Nichelle. Has he no honor?
No, he doesn't.

I've been debating whether to watch this. On the one hand, it's wonderfully Trek-y. On the other hand, it's a Comedy Central roast, and I find those crude more than funny.

Hey, Comedy Central roasting folks! It is possible to be funny without being crude and tasteless.
Cleo256
I'm pretty sure I want to see it. There will probably be crude, humorless "jokes", but there may be just enough genuinely funny stuff to warrant it. Perhaps it is best taped and watched later when it is possible to fast forward.
Peachy Keen
Frankly, I adore all the advertisements where The Shat himself is goofing off. "You know you want to kiss me. Everyone does. *SMOOCH* Heh.
EnglishMuffin
I have to ask, what exactly is a roast in this context?
Gilmel
It's giving someone a banquet dinner, all formal dress and stuff (assuming people have taste, that is) where instead of simply toasting the person and their accomplishments over their career, the person is lampooned and subjected to all sorts of jokes about their personality, career, and exploits, and stuff. Hence, the guest of honor is "roasted," not toasted.
