Harrison Fjord
From the Next Gen Season 6 thread:

Oh yeah. I'll also always remember [Ronny "Capt. Jellico" Cox] as the corporate villain in Robocop. Heheh -- I remember reading that he got the part in Robocop because "He walked in looking like an ex-astronaut." They liked the irony of casting such a likeable guy as the villain.

Had they never seen anything he'd done before, or did he only start becoming the smarmy asshole after RoboCop?

Which, by the way, I think really is one of the better sci-fi films in the last few decades. Not so much for the A-story, which is fairly pedestrian, but for the world they built around it. Some of the "satirical" TV elements were eerily prescient, and the whole concept of the corporatization of public resources is downright scary. It's a shame that Irv. Kershner's knack for making better sequels failed him with RoboCop 2, because that was a world that, like Star Wars, was begging for a stronger hand at the wheel to reach its potential.

And poor Kurtwood Smith. Whether it's RoboCop or Star Trek VI (or even VOY's "Year of Hell"), I just can't watch him without eagerly awaiting a stern, "Dumbass!!"
nqllisi
And poor Kurtwood Smith...I just can't watch him without eagerly awaiting a stern, "Dumbass!!"

Heh, you and me both, buddy. He's a fine actor, but he embodies Red so completely that I don't think I'll ever be able to get that out of my head in any other roll.
Peachy Keen
I love Kurtwood Smith in the Stallone flick "Oscar." Not only do I hear him saying "dumbass" in everything he does, he says it (in my head) with the wide grin of a copper who got his man!
Harrison Fjord
I love "Oscar". Some of my most frequently used quotes are from that movie, particularly, "Dr. Poole was right! You're an ox AND a moron!"
Peachy Keen
Hee! "If you loved me...if you ever loved me...you'll find my baby girl a husband!"

"Fanuccis!" Fanuccis sit!" Hee!

Okay, I'm done now.
LambyToes
I saw Syriana this weekend and indeed Sid is a major player. Plus he's the sexiest sex that ever did sex. erm sorry, 'bout that.

No seriously, he looked good and was so moving in his performance plus when he started speaking Arabic I damn near melted. I know I know I'm demeaning the importance of the film. yadda yadda He's hot damnit!
keckler
I love Oscar and I thought I was the only one.

We have it on tape.

I caught Siddig on a new Agatha Christie's Poirot last weekend. He played a Syrian. He was quite creepy and very, very tall.
Divaah46
I saw that Poirot too! Siddig was very good as a victim/instigator. But I missed Captain Hastings, Inspector Japp and Miss Lemon. I'm probably going to see Syriana soon. And Lambytoes, you're not the only one who gets all gooey. I understand.
chancellorjake
Wow, Oscar. I love that movie.
I've always known that this was a discerning and classy group of people.
Star Trek and Oscar. Now that's a combination.
It ain't respectable!

Do I have to, Boss? Every time I leave I fall behind.

keckler, it's good to see that you're still keeping an eye on us, Boss.
keckler
Aw, I'm never really gone. Even if I don't post, I'm always watching over you. That can give you the warm fuzzies or the scaries, depending on how you want to take it.
Anabanana
King Kong was on TNT and I thought it would be the original. Nope, it's the 1976 remake and who do I see in the IMDB cast list?
Rene Auberjonois
He looks really young.
Anabanana
It's been a while, so this isn't really a double post.
I've just seen Nana Visitor in other roles twice in two days.
Yesterday I saw her in a guest role on a 1985 episode of MacGyver (yep, those DVDs I got for Christmas).
Then today I saw her on an ad for Wildfire (ABC Family). I think she's a regular on the show.
belsum
She is, Ana. Mr. b noticed her in the ubiquitous Wildfire ads running this weekend so I had to look it up. Sounds like a girlier, horsier, OC.
USGrant
Caught Dominic Keating on this week's episode of the ever-so-cheesy "Las Vegas".

Poor Malcolm is still squirmy under pressure and something of a wuss. Ah, typecasting!
nqllisi
Oooh, but how did he look?
Peachy Keen
Did my boyfriend add that to his schedule in a personal email to me? Nooooo! That's it! We're through!

Kidding, sweetie! Call me!

I see it was directed by David Straiton, who, if I recall, directed several episodes of ENT.

You'll get the same feeling when you watch the M*A*S*H film.

Colm Meaney is going to be in "a Sci-Fi Original movie" called Caved In sometime soon (this week, maybe?). I was too busy freaking out about the Battlestar Galactica commercial following it that I didn't catch the details.
Elenita
SciFi site for Caved In. Airing 7 January (Saturday) at 9/8C.
dbrugg
General rule for Sci-Fi channel original movies: Heavy on the horror and/or the suckitude (unless Bruce Campbell writes and/or directs). Colm Meaney is a fine actor, but he will do stuff for the paycheck (Die Hard, anyone?).
PrettyButterfly
Didn't he have an English accent in Die Hard 2? Wasn't he a pilot? Or am I thinking of someone else?
Harrison Fjord

As Butterfly pointed out, let's remember that it was Die Hard 2 Colm was in, and not besmirch the greatest Christmas action movie of all time by describing it as the kind of movie someone would do just for a paycheck. Alan Rickman kicked all kinds of ass, even falling to his death.

I don't remember any special accent in DH2, but he was a pilot, one of the ones on the plane that the bad guys crashed by screwing with their altimeter readings, making them think the ground was lower than it was.
dbrugg
Apologies, everyone. I made a double screwup. I wasn't actually thinking of Die Hard 2, but Under Siege. So I had the wrong film, and the wrong one in that series.

Anyway, Connor Trinneer will class up Stargate Atlantis on February 24. His episode, Michael, premieres that night in the U.S. Scroll down on this page - there are spoilers here for a small picture.

Like Con Air. I just watched that (first time I'd seen it) and it was so bad. I don't like it when Chief O'Brien swears, in an American accent no less. It puts me off what Nic Cage and his wig are up to.

Also, Andrew Robinson is Liberace in the film of the same name on TV here this week. I'm almost tempted to tape it, because I'll be out when it's on, but I think it might be pretty bad.

Not to defend the movie, but a lot of fine actors "picked up a paycheck" in that one — Nicholas Cage, John Malkovich, John Cusack — so Colm was in pretty fine company.
EnglishMuffin
Oh, absolutely. Great cast, shame about the script.
Anabanana
Thanks, dbrugg, fro the heads up about CT.
I'm glad to see the episode will also include "Dr. Beckett" (no relation to Sam) who has a yummy Scottish accent.
skeevo666
Would George Takei joining Howard Stern's Sirius show as announcer count as a role . . ?

Don't forget Steve Buscemi and Ving Rhames. Anyway I liked Con Air. There should always be a place in the multiplex for shallow, yet entertaining, big loud action movies.

Is he going to be permanent, or just for the week? I don't have Sirius or cable, but I read Keith Olbermann's transcripts, and I found this. I feel dirty for laughing.

STERN: George, who is the hottest male reporter here?  if you would point him out.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE:  Unquestionably, Keith OLBERMANN.

QUIVERS:  George likes Keith.

STERN:  Way to go.

QUIVERS:  You could get lucky, Keith.

STERN:  If you're lucky, you'll get a lap dance.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

OLBERMANN:  Thank you, George.  Certainly will change those “Star Trek” reruns for me.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE is George Takei.

Anyway, Connor Trinneer will class up Stargate Atlantis on February 24.

Now I have to figure out who I know that gets the SciFi channel that I can ask to tape it for me without them asking, "You want me to tape what?" I honestly don't understand why no one's picked him up as a regular for a series yet.
Anabanana
penny, as a fellow CT aficionado, I volunteer. I just have to find a new remote for my VCR. A month should be long enough.
chancellorjake
I honestly don't understand why no one's picked him up as a regular for a series yet.

I read that SG: Atlantis wanted him to be a regular character in this role, but that he turned them down.
His wife will be giving birth to their daughter sometime this year and he wanted to spend more time with her.
He did agree to be a recurring guest on SG:A for the season finale and some episodes next season.
Peachy Keen
pennyq, I think I may also have a copy of CT's Numbers episode...as long as you don't question anything else I may have taped to watch later. I never claimed to have good taste in TV. ;)
pennyq
Aw, you guys are such wonderful enablers. What would I do without you?
skeevo666
Is he going to be permanent, or just for the week?

The article I read said he would be live in studio for the first week and then tape bits after that.
dbrugg
CT is also on tonight's Close to Home, yet another legal/grisly crime show on CBS. It airs at 9pm Eastern, so check your local listings, YMMV, etc.
Anabanana
Mental note: Go to Best Buy to get a new remote for VCR. Tonight.
pennyq
Setting my VCR now. Thanks dbrugg.
Peachy Keen
That episode of Close to Home looks like it's directed by Roxann Dawson. Whee! Star Trek Reunion!
lith4
Connor Trinneer has a nice guest appearance as the defense attorney on Close to Home.
dbrugg
Star Trek Reunion!

And then some. Besides being directed by Roxann Dawson, the judge was played by the actor who portrayed Kira's Bajoran father, and the cop working with the prosecutor's office played that extra first officer on TNG - the episode where everyone lost their memory and were supposed to destroy this outpost.

That said, can't say I'll tune in for another episode of Close to Home. A bit too melodramatic for me.
Anabanana
Well, I won't become a regular Close to Home viewer either -- the main chick keeps her eyes so wide open that you can see white around her irises half the time, which makes her look like she's teetering on the edge of sanity -- but CT did a wonderful job. He displayed that authoritativeness we loved in Captain Tucker, as well as [slipping into fangirlyness] touching vulnerability.[/fangirlyness] I enjoyed it.
ciscokidinsf
Saw Colm Meaney doing 'Cave' a craptastic Sci-Fi movie... Chief O'Brien, if you needed some cash, you can come to us and ask next time, OK? No need to do crappy movies at Sci-Fi, really.
Anabanana
Ethan Phillips (aka Neelix), was a semi-corrupt math genius on Numb3rs this past Friday.
EnglishMuffin
Patrick Stewart's new drama Eleventh Hour, in which he plays a "government boffin" who saves the world from mad scientists or some such rubbish, starts here on Thursday on ITV. It co-stars Ashley Jensen from Extras and it looks shocking. ITV doesn't seem to have a website for it, so I can't link it, but the trails on TV look pretty bad.

And Patrick Stewart was in the Radio Times this week giving a short interview, but again, no online link that I can find.
frenchtoast
I normally do not watch 24, but it came on while I was on the phone with someone. Since it was muted, I was just watching the credits when I saw that Manny Coto was listed as a co-exec producer.

I have to set Tivo for Stargate Atlantis. I'm a little worried since I have not seen one episode, but I'll watch anyway. Wish I had caught Close to Home. Well, there are always repeats.
belsum
Ooh, I missed seeing Coto's name. I'll have to look for it next Monday. I hadn't heard he was involved this season. Interesting.
Peachy Keen
frenchtoast, what worries you about SG:A?

Does this mean I'll finally have to start watching 24?
frenchtoast
I'm worried about jumping in the middle of a series and just not getting what's going on.
