Starts on Saturday, November 7th at 11 pm on Fox.

Very little on the website about it, with respect to guests, format and the like. It's a tough time slot, but I'm looking forward to seeing what she does.

Wanda's late night show is set to air Saturdays on Fox beginning November 7th.

If the show is as good as her standup it ought to be a hit.
Malibu65
Thank goodness for Wanda. Finally a late show on Saturday that is worth watching. I have always liked Wanda.
Bastet Esq
I'm quite excited for this show. I adore Wanda Sykes' various comedy specials, and have had the pleasure of speaking with her at a couple of comedy clubs over the years, finding her equal parts genuine and hilarious. I hope this is a good venue for her humor, especially now that she's out and can be completely honest about her life.
dreamy
An article from Variety that talks about the new talk shows (including George Lopez), and describes the format that Wanda will be using for her show. Interested to see who her first guests will be. It's premature, of course, but I also wonder how the second half will fare against the first half hour of SNL. If it were last year, I'd worry more, given the juggernaut of the election and Tina Fey's Sarah Palin impersonation. This fall? Not so much.
mikemedeiros
I am a big admirer of Spike Feresten so I wasn't happy about him losing his show but I'm willing to give Wanda a chance although her voice kind of grinds on my eardrums and based on the promos it looks like a disaster. But I will honestly watch and give it a try.
It can't be any worse than Jeff Dunham's Comedy Central show.
ShadowDenizen
I love Wanda Sykes: have for years.

Not only do I find her incredibly funny and insightful, I typically agree 100% with her POV. And I have even more respect for her for being so up-front about her personal life. I think it's absolutely fantastic that she talks about gay subjects like they're non-issues.

So good for her, getting a woman [and an African-American one, at that!] in on the late-night talk show race; it's about time, and I know I'll be tuning in.
braggtastic

Well, that's quite a recent development, isn't it? She was closeted (at least professionally) for years and years. I don't know about in her regular life, but in the media she never discussed it.
ShadowDenizen
Yes, Braggtastic. IIRC she "outed" herself around the time of the Proposition debacle in CA earlier this year. In all the interviews I've seen since then, she's been very upfront about it.

I love Wanda and I'm so excited for her show (esp. since SNL sucks...).

IIRC, I think Whoopi Goldberg might have been the first female African-American to host a late-night talk show once. This was back during the '90s and could've easily been a blip on anyone's memory.

I'll make it point to catch one of Wanda's episodes. I've always enjoyed her, and her recent HBO comedy special was hysterical.
Stardancer2001
I love Wanda and I am totally going to watch.
dreamy
You're right, Not4Me, Whoopi was the first, but yeah, I don't remember it at all.

I still keep meaning to watch the HBO special, but somehow haven't done it yet.

I've looked everywhere and can't find anything about who her first guests might be - anyone else have any luck?
YellowOctober
I'm definitely excited. SNL has been underwhelming so far and I hadn't really been missing MadTV since they lost Michael McDonald, so this gives me a reason to tune back into to Fox on Saturday nights. What happened to that Spike guy?
mikemedeiros
Talkshow with Spike Feresten (Comedy Writing royalty -Letterman, Seinfeld, The Simpsons, SNL) was canceled in May after 3 years on the air.

Wanda Sykes Has a Show on Fox (or So They Tell Her)

I was going to watch anyway, but this seals the deal:
"I will not be showing a clip of your new movie," she warns potential guests. "I want to talk about relevant things and get into some really good arguments. I don't want to sit around and talk about show biz."

Awesome. I'm tuning in tonight, for sure.

So excited for this show!

I like Wanda a lot, but sorry, I was disappointed with the first show. Not nearly as funny as I hoped. In fact, I switched over to SNL at one point, hate to say it... Taylor Swift's monologue was funnier! Yes, I said it!

Missed most of that panel she had near the end. Was that segment at least funny?
shopper gal
My review...the first segment was decent....the middle with her and the sidekick was painfully unfunny- the Green Porn segment was gauge your eyes out unfunny....the panel at the end was pretty funny....I give it a C+, but there is potential. She needs to have more roundtable, less skits.
Writer13
I thought Wanda's monologue was funny. Bush pee!

I could have done without the sex toy segment. And I missed most of the panel b/c I was watching SNL (there was a View skit!) but I don't think I really missed anything hilarious judging from the little bit I did see.
Kara6891
God....I've been waiting weeks for this show. Wanda definitely came out the gate swinging. I don't know what Fox's ultimate decision was in giving Wanda her own show, but damn if she ain't trying to make them second guess it. LOL! Some of the stuff she did was highly inappropriate for network tv (even if it was 12 in the morning). I felt like I was watching HBO for a while.

Other thoughts:

For some reason I thought the monologue segment at the beginning was real long. Her jokes were funny and all but I thought it dragged on for quite a while when it was probably the standard 7-8 minutes.

How embarrassing for that girl who got put on blast for mouthing she'd rape Obama. Some people just don't know how to act in public. SMH!

I kinda tuned out a little during the second half of the show.....but from what I checked out it seemed alright. A few kinks really needs to be worked out but not bad.
couchspudstud
I saw part of the show tonight while channel surfing between the end of the football game and SNL. I didn't care for it much. Her monologue was too political and I had no idea who the guy was who came out and told a story after the monologue but it wasn't funny. I didn't care much for the round table discussion either, do we really need to know what Phil Keoghan thinks about space travel? Maybe it's just me but I like the traditional talk show format and I don't get why some people try to mess with that format by not using a desk or doing round table discussions instead of one on one interviews.
valny

Really not funny, sorry...that guy was useless. She said it was her "friend" someone or other. And is the drag queen going to be there every week too?(nothing against drag queens)
jo_tornblade
I like the drag queen. I hope she stays.

The last quarter of the show seemed the strongest (funniest) to me. I enjoyed her monologue, but it did need to be cut by a couple of minutes. The sex toys bit might have worked if it had been shorter.

All in all, not bad for a first show. I'll give it a chance.
Gottcha
Epic fail!

Monologue was way too long and she used recycled jokes.

Handicapped actor is SO NOT FUNNY!

Asian segment was just plain racist.
dreamy
I didn't get the feeling that they were committed to a particular format, and it didn't seem natural yet. I didn't think that any of it was particularly spectacular, and I will admit, given my expectation level, I was a bit disappointed.

What I wonder is how they will Monday quarterback it - how, if at all, they will tweak it before next week.

Also, nothing against the panel, but I was pretty confused by the three they selected, as individuals, and as the group dynamic they created. For the first show? Really?

Still, I'll be there next week. The first show is just the first show.
reflection5
The beginning re: Ann Coulter's eyelashes was funny. After that it went downhill, imo. The sex toy skit was excrutiatingly loooooong and stupid. Okay, Wanda, we get it. You're gay and open-minded. I'd rather she sit down one-on-one with guests. Didn't like that panel crap at all..
mikemedeiros
You can lead a group of C list celebrities to a round table but you can't make them funny. The panel almost made me yearn for the occassionally amusing panels on Chelsea Handler's show and really made me appreciate the days of Politically Incorrect.
braggtastic
It was a great surprise to see Phil Keoghan, but I don't think it was a great first show. I do like Wanda & I'm willing to give her more of a chance. She did seem to be reading the monologue jokes off the prompter like it was the first time she ever saw them.

How far in advance does she record the show? So many talk shows pre-tape their Friday shows that she could have first crack at making jokes about anything in the news Thursday night or Friday if she tapes Friday night. It definitely didn't have a live feel to it.
Marla Singer
I only caught the last half of the show and it was meh but I'll give it a few more weeks. The panel wasn't funny but IMO they weren't as cringeworthy unfunny as Chelsea Handler's.
DXD562
I thought the first half hour was much better than the second. The Ann Coulter bit and monologue were funny. Wanda is a great stand-up, and letting her do her thing on the show should pay off. The panel was excruciatingly bad, and went on way too long. None of those people had anything constructive or amusing to say. When Wanda was on Jay Leno, she mentioned that she'd do a panel segment much like Bill Maher does, but Maher always has a couple of learned folks on his panel, and if there's an actor or comedian, it's someone with a brain and something to say. I don't know who any of those three people were, but they were inarticulate and boring.

But I'm a big Wanda fan, and this was just the first show. The Colbert Report took a few shows to get up and running, too, but now I look forward to it every night. Hope the same happens here.

And loved Wanda's t-shirt in the sex toy segment: "I (heart) Sloppy Seconds"!
ShadowDenizen
First impressions?

1) The Ann Coulter eyelash bit was hysterical.
2) The show seemed to be unsure of what it was, and a bit schizophenic because of it. Is it a sketch show? A variety show? A talk show? (I assume they'll find their footing soon if the show continues, though.
3) Wanda is REALLY Pro-Obama. (Not saying that's good or bad, just an observation.)
4) The show was REALLY racy, even for a show on late-night Saturdays. (Again, not good or bad, just observation.)
5) The panel was bad. While I liked the "Politically Incorrect" style setup alot, the guests weren't up to par and [as DXD563 said]had nothing funny or insightful to say, IMO.

This show really didn't change my opinion of Wanda one way or the other. Still a huge fan, she's still wickedly smart and funny, but the show could have been better.
JoeSpacely
Too bad, Wanda. Keep trying.

I get the feeling that she is trying for more of a hybrid "Chris Rock Show" / "Real Time" vibe. I think it will ultimately work, assuming that they just a little time to figure out who they are.

It took a couple of episodes for Chris Rock's HBO show to gel. I think it ultimately worked because they knew who Chris was (a black person), and who his "crowd" is, and wrote with that focus - if white people watched, very well, but the main audience was black people. I get the feeling that Wanda is also trying to appeal to white audiences, as well as nod to her newly-acquired white + gay appeal, but they haven't quite figured out how to add this new appeal to her traditional style.

The result? Weak, watered-down jokes and segments, that no doubt alienated a number of "traditional" fans, and a panel discussion with careful pains to include an equal number of white people (obviously culled from whoever they could get to appear). What makes Bill Maher or Chelsea Handler better with these panels is that they know who they are getting, and share the topics in advance, so that people can have some degree of readiness to respond. Can't just bring any old body onto a panel discussion.

Can't wait to see the show get much better.
Shelwood

I'm not so sure about that. Wanda came to Twop's own TARcon 5 because she is a huge fan of The Amazing Race, so that explains the presence of Phil Keoghan. That was a few years ago, so it may even be that they're personal friends -- and I got the impression that all three panelists were Wanda's real-life friends, yet did not know each other. I do wonder if this first episode was taped a while ago, at least in many parts, as the pilot/test episode for the network and that's why it was so choppy and the topical topics for the panel so amazingly vague. Overall, I enjoyed it.

I can't think of anything FOX does to appeal to a black urban demographic. Even their new break out black comedy star is animated and "The Cleveland Show" isn't exactly Def Comedy Jam. Then going back many years the funniest black comedy I can remember was Eddie Murphy's stop motion animation "The PJs". I guess FOX likes to deal with that talent on a scale they have more control over (kind of like Juan Williams on Fox News Channel ).

Come on people, these are the jokes. I was told this was a roast (thanks Dave).

I got the same impression...I love Amazing Race and Chloe from 24...Darryl MItchell is a comedian and while has a somewhat baby face has been around for years....so I assumed he and Wanda knew each other from the clubs.

Re. pretaped pilot....the clips she's been showing as she made the talk show rounds were not from this weekends' episode...so how many episodes are in the can??

What about "Living Single" and "Martin"? I'm not exactly a fan of the urban black comedy niche, but those are two of the best shows I think television will ever see, especially FOX.
mikemedeiros
I confess I forgot about those two but I think "In Living Color" was funnier than both of those, which I also forgot about. But all of those mentioned , forgotten and otherwise, were still quite a few years ago. Back then I don't even think Fox was on 7 nights a week.
dreamy
Some preliminary ratings, as well as Ken Tucker's review, which sounds a lot like what we've been saying here.
Malibu65
The roundtable was boring. I think they were trying a mix of The View and Chelsea Handler.

They kicked black folks to the curb years ago, I think when The X Files became a hit.

I liked the show so far. You can't always judge how/what a show will be from its first episode. The panel certainly seemed festive after a couple of drinks.
braggtastic

I think it was 90210.

I love Wanda and think she is hilarious, but I could do without all the Obama cheerleading.
Clemmons60
The show was awful. Didn't get through the first five minutes. We get it Wanda, you love Obama.
mikemedeiros
I happen to love the President and don't understand all the attacks and lies but I still thought the show was a mess. So see at least Wanda unified us in agreeing that her show was bad.

Just fired up the TiVo and took a look. A few random takes:

This appeared to be an edit of a couple of test shows. I'm guessin' they may have had some material that was flat and scrambled to fill the thing out, in any event, a (bush) piss poor job of video editing, no snap, no timing and a lot of stretching.

I noticed the EP is Eddie Feldmann. He used to be the EP of the old Dennis Miller show, back when Mr. Miller was relevant and perhaps the funniest man on the planet. Fledmann's fingerprints are all over this, and if you think about it, very much parallels the format of Miller's show, not that it's an inherently bad thing.

Props to Sykes for being fearless. The monologue was for the most part brilliant and biting.

The 'green' sex toys piece was inspired given the decidedly liberal wind blowing through the program. Just a damn funny shot at the realities of the PC mindset. Also, extra credit for using what appeared to be 'real' people in the sex shops. (if they weren't, they cast very well) There's always something engaging about taking the camera's out and sniffing around the real world looking for trouble. No, I don't mean like "Jaywalking'.

Nice picks on the bar guests, Phil & Mary Lynn are naturally of good humor, Daryl Mitchell was trying too hard to revive his career in a single television appearance, which was too bad, it hurt the entire effort.

Net-Net, I'll be putting this on the old season pass record setting with the option to jump over real-time from Saturday Night Live the minute the SNL crew go into their inevitable lazy writer mode and offer repetitious catch-phases and rubber face making as topical comedy. GILLY...GILLY....GILLY

I didn't see anything that couldn't be fixed with a couple more writers, a new editor and a little time to gain its voice and sea-legs. Hopefully FOX see's it that way as well.
JCScantling

It was.

The Fox Network didn't go to 7 nights until 1993. "In Living Color" had been on the air for a couple of years before that. It began in April 1990.

ITA. I love Wanda Sykes and her brand of humor. I soldiered on through that first show and while it dragged a bit in places, I did love the cocktail lounge thing (and what is there NOT to love about Phil!) and thought Inappropriate Games was hilarious. I loved Wanda's opening shot (the faux-CNN thing) and her monologue was stunning. Can live without the sidekick and the woman crushing over Obama on tape got old real fast. SNL is guilty of some of the same stuff, btw.

Like this much better than Mad-TV and hope a few tweaks will keep it as sharp as Wanda's humor.
