This should be interesting, even though the title seems like the name of a porno to me. But hey, I will tune in for anything with Amber Smith. She is not only one of the hottest women I have ever seen, but she also has this wounded bird thing about her that makes me want to just hug her and tell her everything will be okay. Have there been any updates about her and her sobriety recently at all? I am kinda sorta invested in her now.
And I am surprised that Mary Carey hasn't signed on for this mess. More TV time, more money, more exposure... And how it seems like quite a bit of her self worth is based on how desirable she is to men, this seems like it would be right up her alley. Same goes for Andy Dick and his whole "try-sexual" thing.

It was reported on the CR thread that Mary had made a Celebrity Rehab themed porn movie, so maybe she and Dr. Drew are on the outs.
I don't know how I feel about all the women being current or ex-models/porn stars/ strippers, all with a history of molestation and rape (aside from Amber). I guess they need the help, but I get the feeling it's going to be a huge rehash of the Mary Carey/ Mary Ellen stuff. Also, I don't know that people in general have a lot of empathy when it comes to sex workers. I'm imagining all kinds of bad jokes on "The Soup".

Gotta love the Trojan Ecstasy commercial while watching online. Were there alcohol ads on CR 1 & 2?
Overall the participants seem pretty likeable so far aside from the obviously in denial Kari Ann. On a shallow note she's looking rough for 25, time to slow your roll. Spicoli looked a bit rough for 22, but I guess he's out in the sun all day.
Is Amber living with her mother again? Ugh! She needs that toxicity out of her life years ago.
Do they usually do sex rehab in a co-ed setting?
Slightly OT, but I find myself creeped out by the Gene Simmons types (who don't drink or do drugs but will have sex with 3000 women) way more than the all-purpose addicts on this show.

Surfer Boy said he lost all his friends because he slept with their wives. Well, those women had to make the choice to have sex with him, so they're just as much at fault. Maybe his friends should get different wives. But he's also obviously very ADD. It's possible in his case medication could help. The others all need serious therapy.
Had to laugh at the film director who was all "Yeah, the straight boys don't stay that way long in jail." I guess they don't have facilities for single rooms? Keeping the boys and girls separate doesn't really mean much in this case.

I thought the same thing. Him hitting on all their wives would probably be enough to end friendships (if my hypothetical husband's friend kept hitting on me, I would certainly say something about how uncomfortable it made me and how I would no longer be around him), but the fact that the wives slept with him says more about them than him. I mean, he's sick. What's their excuse?
"I was molested from five until seven, and raped at 14 and 17, but it doesn't bother me." The denial was amazing.
She is really messed up. She's clearly a rape survivor who believes all she has to offer anyone is sex. I used to volunteer as a rape crisis counselor, and that is a very common response.
The dominatrix is really rough-looking - she looks way older than 26 (and Surfer Boy looks older than 22 - lots of sun). Nicole Narain, on the other hand, is stunning. So is Amber.
Poor Amber. (Although when she said "My big issue was that I slept with some random guy and was OK with it," I was like "Hey now, not all one-nighters are bad!") She just can't seem to get herself together. And I cannot imagine a relationship with my mother where I am prostituting myself (calling it escorting doesn't change what it is) for our drug money. Amber really really needs to wash her hands of her mother - I don't see her ever getting well with them being so enmeshed.

Yeah, it really made me sad to see Amber's mother there in the apartment. I'm really surprised Amber has even managed to stay drug-sober with that albatross around her neck. Still, if Amber has in fact managed to stay sober all this time (excepting the televised relapse), then it speaks volumes for how far she has come in a short amount of time and I hold out hope that her continued fight for sobriety will eventually lift the veil from her eyes and allow her to finally feel her right to a life of her own.

I couldn't help but notice Mary Carey's face being shown in at least one of the pics shown when the porn star (damn can't remember these people's names except for Amber) was being featured. Surprise, surprise. The face was blurred but nonetheless, it was her. So in some crazy way, Mary found herself back on one of these VH1 shows.

Who would want to miss one moment of Dr Drew’s Coed Sexual Addiction Warehouse? Even though there are no real celebrities to speak of, this is one train wreck worth watching.
I also think the Surfer Dude is very ADD ADHD it seems he needs constant movement. He probably lost his friends because he simply can’t find them and he screwed their wives. I think his inability to concentrate will get him in trouble in a place that has so many distractions.
What about the chick who is married to “Lucas” from “Rock Star” I guess you can’t accuse her of celebrity level jumping.

Wow, I guess Amber's new career is appearing on every incarnation of Dr. Drew. There might be hope for some of these people, but Jennifer (aka Penny Flame) - like most others in her business - is pretty much ruined for life as far as having a normal relationship with anybody. Surfer dude is just a 22 year old goofbag who will be partying all night the day he gets out of the Pasadena Recovery Center. Ms. Teen USA must be what, 23 or 24 now? She looked ten years older with all the lines on her face. Maybe the smoking has contributed but she's got some issues. I remembered that boyfriend who won Rockstar Supernova. Still wearing the eyeliner, I see. He actually has an incredible voice.

I don't really understand the no masturbation rule. I get that sex is a drug to these people and that an orgasm could be considered a hit, but...it seems like the treatment is repressing all sexuality. Unlike heroin addiction, I would guess that masturbation can be handled, no pun intended, in small doses. Maybe surfer dude's weener needed a break, but it's not like it'll disintegrate. Apologies in advance for my lack of sensitivity and use of the word "weener"...
The Plot Device
Nov 2, 2009 @ 5:05 pm
I'll be honest: going into this show without much of a clue about what sex addiction entails... I really didn't learn anything from the first episode. It seems a lot of the people on the show, such as Penny, have issues that revolve more about not being close to anyone other than for sex. In my personal opinion only, I don't think her problem is sex addiction as much as learning how to form normal healthy relationships.
Compare that to someone like the surfer who seems to equate almost any and all things to sex and wanting to have sex. Then compare that to the people who's main issue is early sexual assault/rape/trauma and it gets even more complicated.
It seems to me like we have at least 4 different kinds of problems that would require 4 different kinds of therapy, whether it be regular counselor sessions, group therapy, or even just medication. I'd imagine putting them all together in one group therapy session will lead to problems and the preview of the rest of the season shows that. Some people's issues are more complicated than others, but to each person they are monumental and personal. So it'll be really easy for someone to take offense if they are told their addiction isn't as "bad" as someone else's.
All told, it seems this show was made to capitalize on the David Ducovany and Russell Brand news stories and not much else. Trying to fit sex rehab into the celebrity rehab mold will be tough, especially when it seems like the girls and guys have way more physical contact than just a "handshake" already on day one.

I don't really understand the no masturbation rule.
One of the participants claimed to masturbate 18 times a day. I can see where that would hinder the therapeutic process and why the counselors would just like to take masturbation out of the itinerary for the time being.

Kendra Jade was on Howard Stern's show today. I caught only a portion of it. Here is a summary of that interview:
http://www.howardstern.com/rundown.hs Kendra Jade stopped by to promote Vh1's Celebrity Sex Rehab and told the crew she'd only starred in "not that many" porn films: "Like maybe 10 or 15." Kendra cited the time she tried to blow Jerry Springer as a low point: "Well I couldn't have sex with him..." Kendra hinted that Jerry had performance issues and had to lend himself a hand: "He finished himself." At least Jerry had the courtesy to finish on her chest.
Howard laughed: "You know how I know you're a sex addict? You drove four hours to fuck Mike Gange." Kendra agreed, saying she'd also cheated on everyone she'd ever been with (except her current husband): "You try to fill this void, right?" Gange came in to explain why he had to break things off: "She would page me 50 times...and she was writing me 10 page letters. I mean, we'd hooked up once and she was writing me 10-page letters."
Kendra said she was in a bad place during the banging-Gange era: "It took me a long time to get sane." At the time, she was 65lbs heavier: "I was drinking a lot of Jager."
Howard asked if she'd ever cheated on Lukas Rossi, her current husband, and Kendra confessed: "In the beginning of our relationship, I definitely came close...I still have a problem telling a difference between healthy sex and not-healthy sex." Artie clarified: "Healthy sex is with someone else."

Did anyone catch the little exchange between Spicoli and Jennifer? It would have been kind of cute flirtation if they weren't at sex rehab, but he asked her to marry him and she said something like, "Only if you don't care about me". It was kind of flip, but sad at the same time. It seems like sex rehab would be really difficult around different people, since people/sex with new ones is the addiction. Like alcohol rehab at a bar. Strange.

This is why I come here. I kept thinking Surfer Boy reminded me of someone - Spicoli, of course!
Count me in among those who think Spicoli and Jennifer will "cross the line" - whatever that means since the preview definitely has a lot of breaking the "no contact" rule.
Oh Amber. What she needs is a program to get away from Mom. The fashion advice segment was absolutely horrifying. The thing is, I don't think she's addicted to rehab shows - I'm glad she's on them because I can seriously see her dead from one of her vices if she weren't.

When he said that it turns out straight men aren't always so straight in prison, I was actually surprised to hear him limit his statement to just men "in prison" - in my experience, a lot of straight men are not so straight in the outside world either. If he is obsessed with scoring "the straight man," I imagine he would not have trouble finding that, especially in L.A.

True, but it seems he's more concerned with the "scoring the self-identified straight guy" game than pursuing another openly gay man where there's potential for a real relationship.

There is a sub-set of gay men who think it's hilarious to score with married straight-identified men. A gay man I knew thought it was really funny if he scored with a straight guy who had a babyseat in his car. I don't think that the filmmaker is of this mentality though. There aren't many openly gay men in prison, so I think his point was that although the sexual conditions were not optimal, he was willing to take second-best in the form of the situational homosexuality in jail.

Ms. Teen America was spending serious time sailing that river in Egypt. Her whole introductory interview with Dr. Drew was so frustrating--"next question," "I don't understand what you mean," "I am not going to talk about that." I was losing my mind wondering why Dr. Drew didn't say "why are you here?" At least get her to articulate why she chose sex rehab (since she wasn't ordered to go), because all other indicators coming from her responses were "I don't need to be here."
The Skid Row drummer bugged me big time. His biggest fear is growing old and dying alone? He isn't worried about making meaningful connections with a special someone--no, he just needs another person in the room when he dies. I hope there's more to him than that.

Being around the same age as drummer boy, I took it to mean that he realizes how empty his life is, since he can't form or maintain a healthy, committed relationship. And that he finally realizes that's what he really wants.
I found him one of the less irritating. Although I'm on the bubble about this show: the line between "ick/TMI/exploitation" and "fairly honest look at recovery" is far too close.

Amber's revisionist history regarding the one night stand at the party during sober house is annoying. Sure she was disappointed that the guy throwing the party didn't focus on her but she was more than excited to go see him. Ending up in bed with him seems like it was inevitable. Furthermore she seems most like someone who is tailoring their story so they get another ride on the VH1 celebrity express. Just my opinion...

Eighteen times a day? JEEZ. I didn't catch that, and yeah, you've definitely got a point there. I ended up asking Dr. Google why sex addiction treatment came with an anti-masturbation clause, and it said during the first 90-days of treatment it's a part of impulse control. So, that made sense. I guess at first it just seemed like they were saying all sexual feeling is wrong.

I definitely don't think it was an issue of taking the "second best" option nor do I get the sense that he finds scoring straight men "hilarious." His wording was something to the effect of, "Prison is where I developed my obsession with 'The Beautiful Straight Guy.'" This is a big phenomenon in the gay world (and often speaks to huge self-loathing) - many gay men will spend tons of time chasing that elusive "straight guy," kind of like Amber's "boy hunting." It becomes all about the empty, cyclical quest of attaining this unattainable thing - and once it has been achieved, they become hungry for the next one. A lot of gay men find "straight men" attractive because it is in many ways a rejection of being gay: gay men aren't attractive but straight men are attractive. I knew a guy like this - for him, the ultimate conquest was being the first guy that a "straight," closeted man fooled around with - he loved seeing the look on the guy's face as he finally gave into his forbidden sexual appetite. This friend was well aware that he would be ignored and used by these types of guys - but to him it was worth it to be able to have "the quintessential straight guy." Of course, it is no surprise this guy had huge issues being gay - he wouldn't even discuss his sexuality in public in case anyone was listening.
