Good Queen Jane
I'v looked all over and couldn't find a thread for this show, so I started on. If there is one already, I apologize. Of all the new medical dramas, I found this one the most interesting. It looks as though the transplant dramas will be intermixed with regular medical dramas. I could do without the multimedia transitions to commercials though.
jazzee
I agree...this is the most interesting medical series among all the new entrants this season.
Redtracer
I was looking forward to this, because I did like Alex O'Loughlin in Moonlight, but I thought it was just so bland and boring, not to mention rather obvious. I admit to watching more than my fair share of medical dramas, but it just killed me that the doctor couldn't figure out why the kid was eating metal. I think every medical show has done a pica storyline at some point, so to see it be the big mystery here was a little underwhelming.

The other problem for me is O'Loughlin himself. He was so charismatic in Moonlight, but his character is nowhere near interesting enough to be the lead. Alfre Woodard didn't do much for me either, as much as it hurts to say that. I thought the only two characters who were at least somewhat engaging were the Asian doctor (David?) and the new assistant. He was cute in a wide-eyed, golly-gee kind of way.

But, none of it may matter, since the show appeared to flop right out of the gate. From PI Feedback:

In series-premiere news, CBS medical drama Three Rivers disappointed with 9.17 million viewers (#3) and a fourth-place 2.0/ 5 among adults 18-49 from 9-10 p.m.
Jacob's Hair Dye
I was under the impression this would only be about the transplants - so when the kid didn't need one or donate any body parts to someone else, I got confused.

I read online that this actually was the 2nd episode, and that CBS is airing the pilot next week. Which probably explains why there's very little explanation of who anyone is and what the relationships are. I think a little more exposition is needed, but I can live without it and figure it out as I go.

I'd watch AOL strip paint off walls with a little scraper, so I'm in as long as the show is on. Based on the few reviews I've read, and the fact that the thread for the show finally appeared here the day after the premiere, I'm not too hopeful for its chances.

What I'd LOVE to see is Jason Dohring appear at some point, also in any capacity.
chilindrina
I couldn't find a thread either and was this close to starting gone.

I liked it. It's not a can't-miss-an-episode show but it's entertaining. Though I did hate the super advanced technology CSI thing that a lot of new shows seem to have (the touch screen on the wall) The dialogue was really cheesy at times and seemed heavy handed. But it's only the first episode so they have room to grow. It still needs a lot of tweaking.

I could do without the multimedia transitions to commercials though.
Me too. It just seemed like they were trying too hard to force the suspense.

And, I'm sorry, but there are way too many pretty people on the show that it took me out of it. I don't know if it's the super technology or the supermodel staff, but there's something very "fake" about the feel of the show. What I liked about ER and like about Grey's Anatomy, is that they feel more realistic.

But like I said, it's only the first episode. Maybe once I get past the "Look" of the show, I can enjoy it better. Loved seeing Kate Moenning and Alex O'Loughlin again.
SassySenior
IMHO, not any better than "mercy" or "trauma". Fake, phoney, unrealistic..... and that just describing the story-line. The acting waswell... fake, unconvincing, and at times laughable. I've decided not to give any of them any more air time at my house. Just not the year for successful medical shows.
YumYum
The other problem for me is O'Loughlin himself. He was so charismatic in Moonlight, but his character is nowhere near interesting enough to be the lead.

I was struck by the same thing. I also felt that not only is his character less interesting on this show...his acting is pretty bad. He was not bad in Moonlight. And he's so pretty, too.
michellemtsu
I thought about staring a thread, but then figured the show probably won't be staying on long enough for it to be worth it. And that depresses me.

I'd watch Alex O'Loughlin recite the phone book if I had to but this was just terrible. It's trying to be too many things at once. And that set? No hospital looks like that. I appreciate trying to be cutting edge and all, but I prefer a little realism in my medical dramas. Not bits from Star Trek. You know it's bad when a Deanna Troi sighting can't get me enthused.
cyberducks
I too loved Alex on Moonlight but this was very bland and even more unrealistic than other medical shows currently on the air. Coupled with the ratings which were decidedly unimpressive - my prediction: it will be replaced in the not so distant future with midseason bench warmer Flashpoint (which is a solid and cheap Canadian import for CBS).
Trizzie
I watched it because I went to school with Christopher Hanke (the assistant). I will keep watching for him, but I agree it was a so-so show.

I watched it for Alex too and he was so much more interesting as a vampire (and prettier with longer hair, IMHO). But I can't compare it to other medical shows. I've figured out that I don't like medical shows (I tried watching Hawthorne for Michael Vartan and could not).

I also think it would have been better to let Alex be from Australia. His accent comes across as flat here and I think that hurts his acting. (For some reason I didn't feel that way on Moonlight though.)
VartanFan
AO'L makes me pant, so I will continue watching. I mean, I stuck around for the 2nd episode of the new NCIS so I'll give this one another couple of go'rounds. I did read how it was a little idiotic to put this up against a primetime Steelers game.

The transplant office guy is so very Zach Morris. I expected him to go "time out" at any second. The sad sad childhood doc was very annoying to me. She dressed like Punky Brewster and could use a hair tie.
McKittenplan
I didn't think this was terrible, just aggressively mediocre. I agree with those who said AO'L was lacking his usual charisma and I really didn't care for the wide-eyed newbie. Alfre Woodard was good as usual but she didn't get to do anything outstanding. I liked the Asian doctor and Kate Moennig's character the best. On a shallow level, Kate looked really pretty. I'll probably keep watching just for her, until it inevitably gets cancelled in a few weeks.
rivermet
Can someone explain to me what the female doctor had to do with the rest of the show? I was confused. She apparently isn't part of the transplant team and it seemed weird to be following an unrelated story.
sekhet7
I wanted to like this show since I liked AO'L on The Shield but to be brutally honest I only ended up watching the rest of the show for the criminally underused Daniel Henney (the Asian doctor). That man is so much pretty, it's just wrong. It also helps that he's a fellow Michigan native. I'll keep watching for him but I hope he ends up on a better show after if or when this one crashes and burns (or at least gets moved to another night and time before it gets buried).

It won't help that the football game next Sunday will be the Colts and Titans. I'm also sure it didn't help this ratings in the fact that the show started about five minutes late as well (lousy football). At least I can take comfort that it was better than Family Guy quality wise.
Calliope
I watched for Daniel Henney, but I fear this won't last long. It was an easy way to kill an hour on Sunday night, though, so I'll watch it again. Plus, like I said, Daniel Henney. Yum.
hoosier
Gonna catch this On Demand. Sounds interesting.
Cgr
I want to know the reaction of a real transplant surgeon to this. I will email my friend and tell him to watch next week.
DonitsYum
I watched this to see my friend who was a featured extra but alas, they showed the eps. out of order and instead of the Pilot, they showed eps#2 or #3 (which my friend didnt appear in). Kinda lame. I didnt like the African man who needed a heart, his #1 Fan thing for the lead doctor was strange.
Phred62
I watched as a big Moonlight fan and agree I miss the vampire Alex, but David is smoking hot! I'll probably keep watching.
KatK36

She's a surgical fellow. Her patient was used basically to set up the issues she had with her later father. Why they didn't make it something transplant related, I don't know.

I think it's a good show and it has a lot of potential if they're given time to work out the kinks (I'm afraid they won't be). My biggest issue was the dialog. Some of it was just kind of corny. But that's something that can be corrected. I also had issues w/how clueless the new guy was. I think if he's that clueless he probably wouldn't have gotten the job. I agree the technology is kind of over the top, but that's so common is shows anymore that it doesn't bother me that much. I like things a little more on the realistic end, but I'm used to the crazy technology everywhere. I really like the cast though. I love Kate Moennig, so I'm watching mainly for her.

Oh, one thing that really bugged me was the one doctor sending the newbie to freakin' Beaver Falls to get donuts. That's probably close to an hour away from downtown Pittsburgh.
WindSprints
I thought it moved a little slow and needs some tweaking but I think it has some promise. The lead character needs more fleshing out to gain some more personality. He's promising but needs some work to tell us who he really is. I never watched Moonlight but I think the actor will be good if Andy is given some more depth. The only character that fell really flat for me was the female doctor that treated the pica case.

Perhaps its from watching Grey's Anatomy (and 1 episode of Mercy), but I liked that the doctors appeared to be professional adults. They came across as caring about whether their patients lived or died, didn't mope/angst/run off for sex in the closet while their patient was dying and were called out (the female doctor and the new doctor) for their inappropriate behavior.

I'll watch another episode or two to see if they are able to enrich the characters. Maybe it will be moved to another night if it can pick up a bit. Going against football and Desperate Housewives would be tough for any new show and one that started out needing work is really in a bad spot on the schedule.
bluwater
I started a thread for the show yesterday, but screwed it up, so I had a mod delete it. Got too busy to return to start another. Thanks for starting one Good Queen Jane.

I enjoyed the show. Granted, I'm a HUGE Moonlight and Alex fan (miss that show more than I can express) and seeing him as a doctor threw me a bit, but he was okay. I think he's really keen on wanting to prove to the ML fans that he's moved on and wants this show to succeed that he was overthinking it a bit. That will fade as the show goes on, I think. If you've seen Alex in other works (Oyster Farmer, Feed, The Shield, Journey of Mary Bryant), he is an amazingly mind-blowing actor. He just needs time to get into Dr. Andy's head.

I've not seen any of Kate's other work, but she was good. I liked Daniel's character, Dr. Lee, and think he slipped into his character with the most ease.

The technology was insane and I read that they went to Sweden and Cleveland to look at various hospitals to design the set. Perhaps some Swedish hospitals are THAT advanced, I don't know, but WOW if they are!

Couple of cringes: The dorky construction worker who kept called Mahmood sir. WTH? Also, the spelling bee lady wasn't great in her reaction to the kid puking blood.

I'll stick with the show and hopefully we'll get some background on all the main characters.
KatK36
There's some info out there on Andy's background. Something about him being separated from his wife and living in a hotel near the hospital. I think in episode three we'll meet the wife. If I remember correctly, his is apparently a cop and her partner needs a transplant, so they go to Andy. I wish I could remember where I read that to verify it, but I can't.
WindSprints

Alex mentions that Andy is separated from his wife here, in this brief interview on CBS' website.

I don't like it. Lol.

It's cliche and not well acted, and unfortunately, Alex was no better.

Oh, jeez. Another Carol Barbee serial that probably won't make it. Unlike the late, lamented Jericho, which inspired such hardcore devotion that CBS was almost forced to give it a reprieve, this one doesn't look to garner that many fans. Laughably earnest, and the too-frequent closeups of the male lead had me rolling my eyes. The gimmicky revolving xrays and MRIs were a hoot, but it would seem that the effort was to wow everyone, rather than the cringing embarrassment it actually induced.

Whose bright idea was it to premiere a Pittsburgh -based show opposite a Steeler game anyway? No self respecting Yinzer would be watching.
It even got a tepid preview from the tv columnist on our local paper.

The good? Frequent pretty shots of the 'Burgh and a couple of local references. Jericho had the chance to begin cheezily and then develop and find a direction. I'm not looking for this to get the chance to progress even that far.
tigsun
Add me to the ones watching to see the very pretty Daniel Henney. He was cute when I saw him in the My Lovely Samsoon Korean soap opera and he is pretty here. I taped the show and fast forwarded to his parts only. I will continue to tape and fast forwarded to his parts. He must be on my TV. {swoon}
cmm226
It took me awhile, but I finally placed the new dad as the brother who died in the premier of Kings.

Too bad he might be a show killer because I don't see this new show lasting either.

(I like him though. Liked him in Kings too.)
Roundtheworld
My first thought at the end of the show was that it brought the pretty. I think it's a good thing because I wasn't a big fan of the story or writing, though hopefully they'll improve.

Considering where it is (and my usual recording extra after TAR due to the often football runover) I'll probably keep watching.

Can we just write a petition to all the networks against these high tech computer screens and other annoying things?
Soleil
I'll probably keep watching for as long as it is on because of my undying crush on Kate Moennig, but what an offensively boring show. I mean, I hate the Grey's Anatomy soap opera shit but this might as well have been the cutting room scraps of a hospital security tape.

With the exception of Hot Daniel Henney and Not!Piz and Alfre Woodard, each main character might as well have been on completely different shows. And the subplots were practically aggressively linear -- come on! Medical dramas have been around practically since the dawn of television. Shows that don't even specialize in transplants (ER, GA) routinely come up with more interesting transplant plots.

And not like this show needs nitpicking, but would transplant specialist extraordinaire Doctor Andrew Yablonski really be performing the C-section? It's not like that was an emergency unscheduled procedure. Doesn't the hospital have obstetricians for that?

Maybe the show should have invested more money in good writers instead of fancy visual effects.
sweetpd7
The only medical show I've enjoyed is ER, and only the early years. There is something plastic or phony about the hospital workers interactions. And I ditto that all the new wowsers really irked. But maybe an actual hospital that was primarily a trauma center would be equipt this way and it's true state of the art?

I watched with my son, who really thought he'd like it, but didn't. I know I'll only tune in now and again. One or two people hurt, then pronounced brain dead and surrounded by devastated family every week, played against the anxious recipient and family. This is just too much angst to see week after week. It would cheapen the donor and the gift for me.I think the concept of the show is doomed no matter how it is acted and if the writing is top notch. Not that the show has great acting or writing, so far.

I finally got around to watching and ....... eh. It's not that I found it bad, but I thought it was just boring and clunky. Oh, and I agree that all the Super!Technology needs to fucking stop on TV shows. All I was thinking during the scenes was, "How much did this unnecessary shit cost the hospital? and Are these guys too good for regular x-rays held up to those light-board things?

I also agree with the Daniel Henney hotness. My. God. AOL is defintely a good looking guy, but DH is hypnotically sexy. Just, damn.

When I initially heard about the show my first thought was how the hell are they going to make organ donation plots interesting for an entire season and I still want to know how they're planning on doing that. There's a reason why other medical shows only to that plot once a season (if that) and I get the feeling that damn near every episode will got like this: Hey, we got a heart (or whatever) --> waffling from the donor family --> freaking out from the recipient's family/will we get the heart (or whatever) in time --> Very Special Moment of Realization from donor family --> Yay! All is well. Or, Boo! it didn't work.

Of course I may be wrong, but that's the vibe I got from the episode and that isn't all that enticing to me as a viewer.

Still, CBS puts its shows OnDemand for free so maybe I'll save it for those "Nothing is on, but I want to watch something" moments.

My gripe about this episode was the pregnant woman. I don't know how much thought was put into the fact that the husband now has a newborn, who is probably going to have some problems in life being a preemie. And he has a wife who is limited in what she can do and how long the donor heart will last. My understanding is that there is lots of psychological testing and work done before a transplant. This woman barely had time to say yes before she got the heart. The anti-rejection drugs are hugely expensive, and she will need them for life. There needs to be really good family support. Yes the husband is loyal and loves her but he can't do it alone. I just found the whole idea of giving that woman the heart perhaps unbelievable.
hoosier
Yes, it is really boring. The script is so formula. Does EVERY woman who is in charge of other doctors have to be gruff and unreasonable?
Good Queen Jane
I also thought that it was one big baby for being only 28 weeks gestational. And I would have expected it to be in an incubator rather than waving hello to his mama when she woke up. And although I really liked the African refugee, I hope that he doesn't turn into a Magic Minority, teaching Great Life Lessons to the doctors in the hospital.
Cgr

When they showed the baby I laughed! I liked the African too.
emjohnson03
This show was really boring but I think AOL is a hottie so I tuned in. The stories were either too quick or the doctors seemed wayyy too invested. I don't know how doctors have that much time to have such a bedside manner.

The cliche of the angry dad and the angry doctor was a little much.

I might tune in next week, if anything else I'll DVR it. It may not last past next week anyway! If it was on NBC, that may be a different story....
Marian
This show was really boring but I think AOL is a hottie so I tuned in.

word.
I kept waiting for him to bare his fangs....In order for this to be compelling, I think his character needs to have a more dramatic dark side than torturing newbie transplant coordinators and liking donuts. I need me some angst to stay interested.

Not only all this, but also 1) she may have had brain damage before she got the heart. I'm pretty sure that would have bumped her off the list. And 2) probably not the best idea to get the woman with a new heart all worked up by seeing her new baby and crying husband 5 seconds after waking up from anesthesia. Probably keeping her calm would be better. Stuff like that bugs me, but it's all fixable. I just hope the show sticks around long enough to fix the problem areas.

The show has potential. Aside from the fact that I'd like for it to survive so that Kate Moennig can continue to be a weekly presence on my screen, I think that on second viewing, it wasn't as bad as I originally thought.

There are definitely flaws, mainly in writing (and execution thereof, particularly by Alex O'Loughlin, who, while a decent actor, tended to drift into maudlin territory with some of the 'heavy' dialogue). There were lines that made me cringe and turned the episode into a PSA (in fact, the Ryan character is a walking PSA, something that is a little annoying), as if the writers are worried the audience will forget what this show is actually about, and how incredibly important/morally-themed/emotional the issues are, which is great (because the subject matter is indeed important) but not when it's being shoved down our throats every other scene.

With the premiere episode, there was also a sense of disconnect between the patients of the week, if only because they've harped on so much about the pivotal role that transplant stories will hold in the series, and the entire interconnectedness of donor/recipient/doctor. Hence, when they switched the focus to other patients (eg. the kid who ate metal), it felt a little jarring.

I'm on the fence about the high-tech props used in the hospital, which could be bypassed to an extent if it, again, wasn't so in our faces. It was too obvious, like the show was sidelined by the props when they used them, almost in the vein of product placement except for the fact that these tools aren't actually used in real life (not to my knowledge anyway). It makes the hospital look impressive, sure, but it could stand to be toned down a little.

As for the segment cuts before commercials, with the three-toned graphics and suspenseful dun-duns on the soundtrack, I'm going to outright say that I hated them. Same with the way the camera shots were used, with the incessant zooming in and out, both on actors and locations (the latter complete with 'whooshing' sound effects). I suddenly felt like I was watching some generic crime show. It didn't fit with the rest of the episode's atmosphere.

In the acting department, no one in the main cast is atrocious, although some of the extras were a bit iffy (spelling bee woman, I'm looking right at you and your 'Oh golly gosh' gasp after the kid threw up blood). I'm liking Alfre Woodard at the moment, and the scene with Kate Moennig in her office, talking about Kate's character's father, was great. There was a bit of 'WTF'-ness with the Daniel Henney character seemingly obsessed with all manners of junk food - yet he's a doctor and he has the physique of someone who doesn't regularly gorge on doughnuts and burgers. Is this meant to be a running gag? Overall, I'd like to see more interactions between the main cast, which is why I'm hoping the show doesn't get cancelled.

I'll definitely keep watching as long as it's on air. Hopefully, CBS keeps in mind that it's a new show and it's in a crappy timeslot, and thus gives it time to develop before pulling the plug.

Yessssssssssssss!!!!! I did some heavy-duty drooling over Alex Ohhhh on Moonlight, but Daniel is why I am tuning in. I've watched every Kdrama he's been in and also his movies. Just ridiculously handsome and that voice!!! Seeing him in scrubs about did me in....

Me too, soleil.

I've never watched "ER" or other hospital dramas so I don't know how this one compares. I didn't particularly like this episode but - the show has Katherine Moennig in it, so I'll continue to watch.
twenty to four
I tried to watch for Kate Moennig, but she either needs to be in it more, or she needs to be in a different show more. I lasted 20 minutes and that's because I was reading a book at the same time. When's Nurse Jackie back?
KatK36
Judging by this preview of Sunday's episode, it should be a good episode for us Kate Moennig fans. The preview shows her going on a donor run, performing CPR and in surgery mode with her cute little hat and surgical mask hanging down. I'm so looking forward to this.
vitamarie
Why would they be DRIVING to the hospital with live organs? Wouldn't they be using a helicopter? All major hospitals have heliports. Even the smaller hospitals around here (Detroit) have heliports. I'm sure it is the same in Pittsburgh.
MissMoneyBags

HA! Yeah, I thought a lot of the dialogue seemed to be mailed in directly from Generic Banter Central. Like it came from the same people who write the lines for Oscar presenters. As a result I find this show weirdly hilarious in places where I really should not. Case in point was the exchange "So my son's name will be on this wall?" "Absolutely." AOL is a terrific actor and he sure is pretty, but for some reason his "Absolutely" landed on my ears as vaguely sarcastic, and I totally cracked up.

Another point of hilarity for me is that they're not even making a token effort to disguise Daniel Henney's origins as a male model... NOT that I am complaining for one second, mind you.

Moennig is good but I really wanted to brush her hair out of her face several times during the episode. It was driving me nuts during a few scenes, and yes, I totally feel like I've turned into my mother here. "Get that hair out of your face!" Still, I'll give them points for giving her a more realistic hairdo than some of the immaculate coifs sported by other TV doctors.
sekhet7
Only three things came to mind while watching this:

a) we need more Daniel Henney (he never seems to do much of anything on this show...or at least not enough by my standards anyway) but I hope they start to make David less skeevy as this show goes on (for as long as it will anyway)

b) lousy football (this episode started at 9:45 pm EST)

and c) that blonde guy is still super annoying and I still really want to strangle him every time he speaks.

Also, that guy who played the kidney transplant patient's son...yeah, more of him too please.
Jacob's Hair Dye
Brett Cullen! I don't know whether to be sad that he's been reduced to doing these kind of shows, or optimistic because he agreed to be on this show no matter how briefly.

It was cool but weird to see the actor who played Casey Kasem in Generation Kill as Christina's dad. Half expected him to have excuses why Three Rivers didn't have enough batteries or other power sources for all their fancy gadgetry.

I don't understand the point of showing this episode 2nd, especially since this was supposed to be Zack Morris' first day at Three Rivers. And yet he was in the "first" episode. Do love Daniel Henney's food hazing of him, even if it seems a bit forced.

One other thing - I thought organ donors' identities were supposed to be kept confidential - the donees aren't even supposed to know who they are. Yet they stick the donors' names on a wall, and Christina invites the donor's mom to come visit? That didn't seem right to me.
mandigirl
Whatever this show's ratings are tomorrow are completely unfair because it got screwed over. I went to my CBS channel to watch it, it said 'Three Rivers' on my guide and in the info, but it was Survivor. Not sure what happened. Way to undermine a new show. I'm certainly not invested enough to go hunt it down online or on Hulu (I don't think it's on there anyway.)

Also, didn't know Daniel Henney was a male model, but figures. My goodness he's so hot.
