I thought her first show went well.

The hour went fast.

Love Bette.
maggie010
I really liked the show.

Loved that Joy and her guests were prepared for the "Hot Topics." Very thought-provoking. Enjoyed the variety and did not feel short changed on the length of the segments.
Ashley4
I agree with the above posts. I really liked the show and I hope that it continues. Tomorrow's night guest is Ann Coulter (I think...). That should be REALLY good.
SuzeECutie
This is what the View's Hot Topics should look like.

Go Joy! We love you! I know your show will go on for many years and be a huge success.

I was as startled by Jeanane Garafolo's relatively low-key performance as I was by seeing Bay Buchanan's new face (I don't typically watch CNN and I didn't know that bitch had gotten stretched to within an inch of her life).

Overall, it was really enjoyable, but I wonder whether I will be able to forgo Rachel Maddow for it.

Not me, thank goodness for the HLN multi-repeats i watched it later. Wouldn't watch if there was something besides Dancing With the Stars on in the timeslot.

I guess the number of right winger guests, which she had no comments in opposition to, is in line with the HLN modus operandi. I mean I believe Glenn Beck used to be in this timeslot! Surprises me I guess, I thought she was a bit more of a lefty, that she might have an OPINION, since she is a host, not a journalist.
braggtastic
I only saw the second half in rerun. Too bad there's not an even later rerun. I loved the not-so-subtle dig at BW never retiring and having to be carried out "no names, no names!"
Tunia
Loved Bette Midler's comment that "some TV personalities will go on until they have to be dragged feet first off the screen", but of course she "wasn't naming any names". HA! Wonder if BaWa took that one personally - she should have!

ETA: Great minds....braggtastic, great minds!

Good show. Topics seemed to be well covered, good variety of guests and the pace was pretty good.

Based on this show, Joy seems to be more in a moderator mode, letting her guests do most of the talking. I think if her future guests are more controversial, Joy will step it up with more of her opinions. She did get her point across several times without being too obtrusive.

She did well for a first show. And thank goodness for the second airing and dvr's.
Andrea Lee
I really was surprised by how good this show was, especially for the first episode. Garoffalo and Buchanen were GREAT together! I loved that Joy took a Larry-King-ish backseat, but kept the flow going well and interjected her own position in an unobtrusive and lighthearted way. She wasn't rabid, she wasn't uninformed, she wasn't lazy. It was 100X better than her other gig.

I am very happy to see that she has layed off the pre-written lame jokey stuff. She needs to find her groove still in that department, but it looks promising!

Just watched Joy's first show. Thought it was fast moving, good guests and Joy kept it all moving, all by herself ;). Liked her ending monologue and wonder if that is going to be a daily thing.

Ann Coulter will be on tonight, the two of them are always fun together. I think it's looking good for Joy. If the show doesn't work it won't be due to Joy.
braggtastic
I'm sorry now I missed the first half of the show. I couldn't find it on itunes, but does anyone know if the show is available online anywhere?

I think I'm going to give up recording Conan in order to record this show on nights where I'm already recording two things at 9pm.
Malibu65
I have always enjoyed Joy when she filled in for Larry King so I figured if she brought that over to her own show it would be just as good. She was. I liked it and look forward to watching it. I loved the topic of Polanski and thinking THAT is how a discussion of that man should have been done.
Morbs
Too bad there's not an even later rerun.

I know, hopefully the show will get buzz and HLN will add more times. I missed most of the premiere because 9 and 12 have too many conflicts.

Joy's website has clips and a transcript up so far.
Malibu65
Too bad there's not an even later rerun.

I agree. There are like three reruns of Nancy Grace. Geez.
braggtastic
Thanks for the transcript link, Morbs.

WOO HOO! I loved it! I have missed Joy since giving up watching her other gig. It's so nice to be able to watch her again without shrieking and muttering in the background.........

Really liked the first half hour. Even though we had people of opposing viewpoints, everyone was able to speak without major interruption and do it in a calm fashion. I liked the back and forth banter. Bette Midler was fun. I felt like I was eavesdropping on two chummy girlfriends who were out drinking martinis.

Kudos Joy. I look forward to tonight's show!
Jen2000
I really enjoyed the premiere and I am definitely going to give this show a chance.

But those people that were laughing from behind the camera - please, spare us the pretense that Joy's pre-scripted jokes are so funny that she has her entire crew in stitches. Most viewers are not that gullible.

Goodbye View; Hello Joy! I loved the segment with Ann Coulter. Coulter came off not so much as an angry beyotch, more like a likeable dotty relative. (I can't believe I just said that.) Victoria Gotti was a riot - unintentionally. Loved her hair. Looked like a giant doll's wig was plopped on her head. "Oh Daddy made a choice to join the mob; it was his decision. It is what it is." Joy shot her down with a certain amount of finesse which made it even funnier because Gotti did.not.Get.it.
Duckie30ca
Goodbye View; Hello Joy!

Yup, I totally agree. What a refreshing change to see an intelligent discussion where people actually listened and the host moderated!
Canaduck
I only "sampled" the first show from what I'd taped but watched all of tonight except for most of the Victoria Gotti segments because anything mob-related makes me yawn. Joy seemed more relaxed tonight and her guests seemed relaxed as well. I was trying to eat supper when Bill Maher was on and he kept me laughing. Fortunately, I didn't choke.

The guys guffawing off-camera are quite unprofessional.
braggtastic
It does make me mad to hear such intelligent discourse about the Polanski case on this show vs what happens on the View trainwreck where facts are kind of out the window.

I haven't checked the credits, but I wouldn't be surprised if one of the laughers is Frank Gallo. He worked (works?) behind the scenes at The Daily Show and his laugh is very identifiable.
Alias Fanatic
The guys guffawing off-camera are quite unprofessional.

I really like it. It sets a different tone for the show.

I watched Joy's show last night, and I really like it. I thought Joy did a great job, and she looked really pretty, too.

My favorite part was her interaction with Ann Coulter. I thought is was terrific, and it was nice they both obviously disagree but they could find humor in each other.

Brava, Joy!
Tanya1959
Considering The View has 3 "Comedians" on the panel you would think there would be much humor interspersed within the hour, but NO. Now we have Joy's HNL show 1 "Comedian" and a lot of humor interspersed in the hour. Go figure.

I find this show intelligent, I'm happily surprised.

Hope she continues to do well and makes that her new home. Also wondering if Star Jones ever has a project to plug if Joy and her will mend fences and we'll see them together again?
Yolanda
Good for Joy. Only 2 eps. and this show is already the antidote for those who are frustrated by the idiocy on The View.

This is the show that Rosie O'Donnell people expected her to have, and could have had, if she wasn't so unhinged.
SparksFan59
I have watched the first two episodes and loved them both. Joy is a wonderful host, she's intelligent and yet the show doesn't take itself too seriously. I like the combination of talk on real issue yet with a hint of humor thrown in. Bill Maher was a delight, he and Joy had a great rapport going on.
osowolf
I know it's only been two shows, but I feel like Joy is trying to create that "cocktail party with revolving interesting guests" feel. I think it's working. I actually found Ann Coulter human last night! And I would love for Rush Limbaugh or Bill O'Reilly to take her up on her invitation to come on and talk with her.

I was mesmorized by Victoria Gotti's hair. Is it going to stay on? Will it flop to one side? Does she not look in the mirror and adjust before she goes on? Her interview was interesting. Joy poked a little hard at times. Especially when she would compare her childhood and family choices to Victoria's parents. And I don't think Victoria liked it very much when Joy said her Aunt Julia thinks the Gotti's make Italians look bad.

Awww. Meredith and Matt congradulating Joy on her show. I love Meredith. Go on the show!

Guffaw man needs to simmer down.
Madame Du Barry
I caught the first show and I was very impressed. I expected this show to ... well, stink. I am so happy to have been wrong! Good for you, Joy.

I, too, hope they will add re-runs at different times. I am in bed by midnight (or too tired to focus) and I always seem to be busy with something at nine. I missed Ann Coulter being human last night? No way. Halley's Comet comes by more frequently than Coulter acts like a civilized human being and I had to be giving the dog a bath! Damn! Ah, I just peeked at Joy's site and there is a Coulter clip. Thanks for the link, Morbs.

I hope Joy dumps The View and pours her energy into this show. She seems to be intent on bringing viewers what The View claims it wants to bring its audience - calm, intelligent, informed discussion from people with different perspectives - and some laughs. Heh, maybe HLN could air this show at 11:00 am and give me something decent to watch at that hour!
EarthToJane1999
I'm also surprised how much I'm enjoying her show. She seems much more relaxed and comfortable than when she subs for Larry King.

This is definitely going to replace the View on my DVR. Makes realize just how much Joy holds her tongue on The View, though.
SassyCrumpet
I missed Joy's first show, but caught the second. I enjoyed it quite a bit even if it seemed a bit uneven and rough around the edges. However, with that said, I found Joy enaging , charming, and funny in this venue. I wish her all the success in the world so that she can take a page out of Kathy Griffin's book and say to BW at The View, "Suck it, Barbara!"

Although I've read many a comment on the boards about her, I have neither seen nor heard Ann Coulter before last night. I was on the computer at the time and all I could think was how annoying her voice was - sort of that voice that I associate with a snobbish character - drawn out vowels, clenched back teeth, expected her to say, "daahhhling" to Joy at some point. UGH!

I hope they don't put her on at 11 PM - that's when I'm watching The Daily Show and The Colbert Report...horrors! I'd like to have Joy on at 10 PM and have 2 solid hours of fun news, and news fun!

Go, Joy!
braggtastic
Did anyone else get the second Jeff Ross segment Joy mentioned? We had an extended ad break w/a local news report thrown in the middle, then Michael Moore.
kim7676

Yea, and he was pretty funny. He talked about Joan Rivers, Palin and Mackenzie Phillips.
Cosmocrush
I hope Joy dumps The View and pours her energy into this show.

After seeing them both, I think Joy dumped The View a while ago - she just shows up and cashes the check. I don't know if it's because I'm comparing it to her day job but I enjoyed this show far more than I thought I would. Joy was really quite good and had interesting guests that she actually let talk. She didn't get that from her day job. Heh.
braggtastic
We got screwed out of the final Rabbi segment too. Why is TW doing this?
Malibu65
I am sorry BRAGGTASTIC for the interruptions. This is why Joy's show needs to get more reruns rather than the Nancy Grace show.
Tunia
We're in the New England market and also lose 5 minutes at mid show and at the end at the 9:00 hour. Our station goes to a local news update.

Interestingly, these breaks are eliminated at the midnight rerun, and we receive the entire show at that time.
crystalsage
Joy was The Daily Show and explained that on her new show, she gets to interrupt herself. I think her show is great and she gets a nice mix of guests. Liked the round table about the Polanski situation. Even Gloria Alred made sense and wasn't too far OTT. Michael Moore is really pissed off at the Dems who voted against the public option in the finance committee. Watch out.
Canaduck
Michael Moore seemed really depressed tonight.

I wonder if Joy has set a private objective where, once it's reached, she will dump The View altogether. Like, for instance, if HLN renews her show for a second season. It has to be tiring doing both shows each day. Also, it was pretty obvious tonight that Whoopi's rape-rape quote was missing during the panel discussion on the Roman Polanski case so Joy won't have complete freedom as long as she's tied to ABC.

The off-camera laughing didn't bug me as much this time because there were so many laughing it was like there was a small studio audience. Is it typical of HLN not to have audiences for these types of shows?

Kathy Griffin is on tomorrow...er, tonight. Yay!
crystalsage
I am sooo looking forward to Kathy Griffin tonight. I sincerely hope Kathy goes there talking about the View. I also hope that Joy continues to bring an entertaining, informative show to the airwaves and that she can finally exit the View. Perhaps someone will even get iTunes to pick it up for a podcast. That's how I get Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann since I changed providers and MSNBC is not carried. Bummer. Clusterfox remains though. I do not watch the View anymore - for any reason. The show is completely toxic and Joy, I believe knows that. You can see on her show that she does her homework; comes prepared with cogent questions; and injects just enough snark to keep it light. She was a delight on TDS. Anyone who can make Ann Coulter seem human is a great interviewer IMHO.
Malibu65

Yes it was obvious but I don't think it had anything to do with ABC. I believe Joy wants to keep her show separate from the View. I don't blame her. It is nice to have a panel to discuss in a rational manner the Polanski case without getting so much gibberish and misinformation. Besides, the topic on Joy's show was Polanski finally being arrested; not whether he committed a rape-rape.
grainofsalt
This show is totally enjoyable. She has good panelists and guests, she keeps the flow going yet doesn't seem terribly rushed and she uses the right amount humor in the right places, unlike on the View where she derails conversations.

Amazing that someone who is not a lot of fun on the View can be so much fun on her own show. I guess ownership really changes an attitude. It is kinda cute the way the ads for her show mention her as Emmy-winning. That happened just in the nick of time.
I wonder how many people have seen Joy on HLN and in turn watched the View as a result.

Does anyone know how her ratings are?

ymmv
Tunia
So who'll sit in for Larry King now?
ScribblerGuy
Does anyone know how her ratings are?

Check out tvbythenumbers.com, (specifically, this category). But, here's the results so far
Day: P2+ (25-54 demo) (35-64 demo)
Tuesday: 559,000 viewers (215,000) (321,000)
Wednesday: 566,000 viewers (208,000) (280,000)
Thursday: 542,000 viewers (149,000) (225,000)

It's not that close to the numbers its lead-in, Nancy Grace gets (which have ranged from around 850k to 790k these past few days), but based on HLN standards, I don't think it's doing all that badly. Then, again, I don't have any clue what expectations HLN/CNN has for the show.
maggie010
I was surprised she had a pretaped interview with Kathy (loved it) and then a repeat with Bette.

What is it that Joy thinks she is entitled to a 4 day work week on her 2 shows?

Sigh

It makes me want to throttle her because she is up against Larry and Rachel and many others - that do daily weekday shows.

Nice gig, Joy, but annoying, to me anyway.
athousandclowns
I have always liked Joy and enjoyed when she sat in for LK. I think she is now going to shine. My husband has even watched with me something he will not do "with her other program" The pace is good, guests have been really good and it is on at 6 and 9 for me. My cable menu says she is one Saturday and Sunday too (listed as new)
Way to go Joy!!!!!!!!

I don't know about Larry King, but Maddow is one hard working woman. As much as I enjoy Joy, this four day week is crap and I'd chose Maddow almost any day against Joy. I had been recording this but I'm not going to get too attached. She needs to work a little harder than she does on her day job (also a four day week) to keep this show against her competition. After watching her for years on The View, I'm not sure she has that kind of work in her.
musica
I watched Joy's show again last night. It was very good again. I do not mind her 4 day work week if this is what she feels she needs to do everything she loves, including but not limited to her "stand-up." I am not sure if it will hurt her or not. I like Larry, too. I do not watch the girl very often. My favorite is Anderson Cooper, though. I guess Joy will have to see if this schedule works against her competition. If it does, more power to her.

On last night's show though, I was shocked to find Kathy Griffin may have been child molested by her brother. To me, she was definitely harrassed psychologically if her brother was "whispering sweet nothings in her ear." Kathy says she doesn't remember if he did anything or not. I feel badly for Kathy this happened to her. I know she makes fun of a lot of people, but I think she is a very good person, and when talking about the situation with her brother, I could see the pain in her eyes. Bless Kathy....
Bony Prominence
I was surprised she had a pretaped interview with Kathy (loved it) and then a repeat with Bette.

I got the feeling the show is always taped, not live. The day she had Ann Coulter on, Huffington Post had a clip of it posted that afternoon before it had aired. And I don't see "LIVE" written on the screen, as I do with other live shows.

I love this show. She has a warm, conversational style, like a funny Charlie Rose.
