With its biggest season yet, "Dancing with the Stars" Season 9 introduces 16 new stars, including an Osmond and an Osbourne, two Grammy AwardŽ-winning artists, a Cowboy, a model CEO and a former House Majority Leader.
Just a reminder: please don't post list or log-type posts where you just list each couple and your thoughts. It doesn't lead to much discussion and large numbers of them in a row are boring to read. Post your initial overall thoughts, read what others had to say, and then come back and post more.
I won't be giving warnings or anything for those who do; I'm just asking it as a courtesy to those who perhaps aren't on the East coast and have a lot of posts to read before they can post their own thoughts. Thank you.

I can safely say there is no Gilles in this group. They also might as well just hand Donny his ticket to the finals now. Barring an injury there is no doubt in my mind he will end up there.
I do hope the women bring some personality and better dancing because the males are pretty flat this time around IMO, but I also think the celebs shouldn't be expected to learn two dances for week one. As a result quality suffers.
Louis is adorable, but not much of a natual dancer. Aaron has potential, but personality wise I can't root for him.
I really think Ashley will get canned before Tom. He had a lower score and like Tom or hate him at least people will remember he was there. Edyta was basically dancing by herself.

Goddamn you Ashley Hamilton!! Why did you have to suck so bad? I wanted to like you because you look like a wax figure but you've got that sleeve so there's obviously something going on in your head that I might find interesting but now you're probably going to booted and force another week of Delay on me.
I also liked Aaron (makes me wanna die to admit it but it's true) and Louis (he's cute).

Interesting first night. I didn't think there were any truly awful dances, though there were definitely some wooden ones ... Chuck, Ashley, Tom all come to mind. Donny's overenthusiasm is already driving me nuts in week one (I wasn't watching when Marie was on; was she this hyped up?). I think he's talented, but he needs to take it down several notches...
Louie was better than I would've thought, and I thought the judges were overly harsh to Michael (really, worse than Chuck or Ashley?), but at least they've for now stilled my paranoia about their embrace of football players ...
Not sure I like the relays concept especially so early. The Viennese Waltz relay tended to be much closer in performances, I thought, than the salsa relay where the top performers were quite clear.
And again? The odd songs? Really on "Grace Kelly" for the fox trot?

Just a quick drive-by post for now: Based on tonight's performances, I'd vote for Ashley/Edyta to be ousted on the men's side this week. Ashley brought little to nothing to the show, in either dance performance or personality. Sorry, Edyta!
Though, if I really had my druthers, Anna D. would go with Ashley, and Edyta would get traded up to her partner. Sorry, Anna!

I agree, spanna. Aaron was surprisingly decent and full of potential, but I really can't root for him, even though he was very earnest and undouche-y tonight.
I like Michael a lot, but I am over the footballers in the finals.
There may not be a Gilles in this group, but Mark and Lacey are so awesome together, and I'm rooting for them to maybe overtake Donny in the finals, because a Michael Irvin/Donny Osmond/Melissa Joan Hart Final 3 would be too predictable.
Bring on the women!

It didn't feel like the show was truly back until we got a shot of back-up singer Chandeliera. She's still got it. Whatever it is...
I haven't followed any of the pre-show stuff so I have no prior opinions about anybody. Everyone seems nice enough.
Thought Ashley and Michael's dances were boring. Aaron and Donny were good. Mark was good and bad, and also there seemed to be a bit of drag-queen trying to get out of him. Tom was pretty bad. Even though Chuck and Louie aren't the best dancers, they both had something that make me want to see them for a good long while.
Nice to see Chelsea back. Not really impressed with Anna at all.
What? Marie Osmond and Jermaine Jackson.
Oh wow. I thought that was Baby-Face.

I was surprised at how few people I liked personality-wise. There were a bunch of stars I expected to dislike or be apathetic about (Chuck, Aaron, Ashley, Louis) but found that they were okay or even likeable. Tom Delay, however, would have to cure cancer during his rehearsals to change my mind about him.
The only one I had a worse opinion of was Michael, although part of that may be due to his partner's lack of charisma.

Samantha's questions after the relay dances were so pointless. "What did you think of your competition?" Like they're really gonna say, "They sucked!" Although, considering Macy's earlier comments about Jonathan, I guess she might be prone to saying something along those lines tomorrow.

You give a Martial Artist "Kung-Fu Fighting" to dance to and then complain that he does MA. Then you make it seem as if he always does MA in his dances even though this is the...FIRST dance. Argh. Plus I think that Len just hates Lacey so no matter what she does he's usually always 1 pt lower than all the other judges.
I thought Aaron's cha-cha was uncontrolled and a bit sloppy, shows what I know. I definitely don't think he deserved a 8 for it.
If the judges are going to be this nitpicky all season, we're in for a long one. I thought that compared to some other opening nights there was only 1 really bad dancer (Ashley) and everyone else was ok. I'm really surprised that the scores were so low.
While the relay is a good concept, they need to up the time from 30 secs to 1 min or something. 30 seconds isn't long enough to get a good flow going.
My favorite was Mark. I find Aaron annoying. I didn't mind Michael even though I hate the Cowboys. Tom Delay wasn't too bad and Donny was annoying.

I thought the judges were unnecessarily bitchy tonight and there is no way that Tom deserved last place in that relay waltz - he was actually on the beat, unlike Michael or Mark (who was rushing like a mad man through the whole thing).

My favorite couple tonight was Louie and Chelsie. She did a good job with choreo and for me her and Louie really clicked. He seems to be a sweet kid who just wants to have a good time. Mark and Lacey are my second favorite couple. But I wish that she would have done more dancing and less Kung Fu. I get that the song is ridiculous and it's the first night but I think they would have scored higher. Also I think Mark has the ability to do more. Aaron was ok but WAY too fast. His personality is a big turn off as well. Tom was horrible in so many ways. He can't dance and he has no charisma whatsoever. Ashley, and Chuck are just there for me. Michael was fun in the rehearsals but his dancing definetly isn't anywhere near Emmitt level.

My TV was on the fritz and I missed the first few minutes. Was there a pro dance?
Aaron seems to have potential but if he doesn't stop commenting on Karina's hotness I'm going to smack him.
I learn to tolerate Lacey a little better last season but I couldn't stand her here. Stop looking at the camera Lacey! It is not all about you! And on the same note, really didn't miss Julianne. I did miss the male pros though, it was weird not to see Jonathan, Derek, etc.
I did think that the judges were a little hard on Micheal Irvin. He's worse than Ashely? Really?
I do hope Louie hangs around for a while. I'm afraid he might go away based on not having much name recognition but I think he has some potential, even if he's not a natural, and he's a cutie. Chelsie was amazing with him. And they looked like the Lilliputians next to Anna D. and Micheal.
ETA: The fifth-grader inside of me was squeeing with joy at seeing at least three of the Backstreet Boys. Aaron can stick around a while if they keep showing up.

I'm not really feeling Anna D. either, though it's her first show so I cut her some slack. She just might be nervous, especially coming into a pretty established pro group.
I honestly expected Tom Delay to be worse. He's not good, but he seems to dance on the beat which as said, a few others had issues with that in the relay.
Aaron is a bit sloppy and uncontrolled, but the potential is there. I just wish I could look past the douche factor. We'll see.
Did they say in the design a dance we get to vote for a former celeb to come back and dance with the pros? Can we just vote for Gilles now? Speaking of which, nice to see him and Shawn in the audience supporting.
And on the same note, really didn't miss Julianne.
Shows how much I didn't miss Julianne. I totally didn't even notice her absence.

Well me too on Louie and Chelsie. I wanted to hug and kiss her - that girl teaches DANCE by God. Almost any other pro Louie would be clumping around out there like Kenny Mayne but Chelsie got frame and line and transitions out of him. The girl is a pocket sized goddess.
Mark and Lacey lack chemistry and right off the bat she does what I'm afraid of. Stop aiming for the bulls-eye Lacey, it's a trap. Think about the dance as the dance it's supposed to be first, not the other stuff.
Okay, add me to the shamefaced, squicked out ... group? that enjoys, in a shamed, squicked out way, watching Karina/Aaron. The white maribou thing she had stuck on her costume was godawful, but the choreography worked and their chemistry works. Also, I think they look better together than any partner she's had before. I think Karina can be too overt and cheesy for a stereotypical hunk in her performance style, and too androgyneous in her body type (amazing body, but very gymnast). But a good-looking guy who also seems as if he could do a turn as either a serial killer, Malfoy's twin in Harry Potter, or the master of ceremonies in Caberet is just about the ticket. Their bodies match in the right way on the dance floor, so do their energies and personalities.
I think the douche element in Aaron is an important facet he brings to the DWTs table. :) I think it helps with Karina - and that is gonna come out wrong any way I say it, but I sort of mean it's going to curb any weeping in confessionals or emotional moments from her. He's not the type. It works for him.
Len - I think for Len he was good to Louie and Chelsie because he approves of how Chelsie teaches and choreographs. He likes to nip any nonsense in the bud. He appreciates Cheryl for similar reasons. Lacey does tend to lose the forest for the trees and I think that's why he got in on her early. You'd think the lesson would be learned by her already - and yeah I know it was a moonball they gave her with the song choice, but it's her job to avoid the trap.

I can safely say there is no Gilles in this group.
I agree. The constant shots back to Gilles just reminded me of that more. I was hoping Mark D. would be that person who would jump out personality and dance wise. But was a bit disappointed. But I definitely see potential. I have come to like Lacey but I was wondering the whole time how Mark D. would have danced with Kym or Cheryl. Regardless, I definitely see him in the finals with Donny. He was a close rival to Donny and Mike in terms of audience applause.
Anna D. was so disappointing. She has a good celeb in Michael Irvin and I felt he should have been so much better. If Kym was partnered with him, he would be finals bound, IMO. I really do not mind Donny winning because I really want Kym to win this season.
The women better bring it because Aaron was surprisingly the celeb I enjoyed the most. He danced pretty well and surprisingly not an ass. But not voting for him nor to I expect him to win. But he did provide the best around performance tonight.
That's actually the most predictable thing about Len every season (at least every season since Lacey has been a pro).
As predictable as Lacey calling herself the rebel. Eh, doesn't seem to bother her and she seems to like it. I do not think Len has it out for her. I agree with waltzinspringtm that Len is a fan of Chelsie and approves of her teaching. To me, his favorites are obvious and she is one. Not complaining because she got me to get past Louie's hair.
TPTB, 16 celebs are waaaay too many.
The highlight of the show? Samantha saying "schmcha cha cha." She's a gift that just keeps on giving.
Audience spotting:

I like this premiere week format that the show has designed. It's almost like a hybrid of Season 6 and 7. We get to watch each couple dance both a Ballroom and a Latin the first week before the first elimination, but unlike Season 7, having them doing a shorter second dance in relay is probably a little bit easier for the celebs. Splitting the into men's and women's nights is also nice, probably for both the couples and for the viewers.
I liked the fact that the judges were actually judging tonight. They didn't just pat everyone on the head because it was the first week. Though I felt they were harsher than necessary on some of them.
Most of the men were fine, but not particularly outstanding. Aaron Carter has potential and Karina gave him solid content to work with, but he seems a little too aggressive...I can see him getting the same criticism Sabrina Bryan and Shawn Johnson did about sometimes not being fluid enough in their movements.
I guess after seeing four consecutive seasons of such strong female celeb dancing (including Season 5, even though there wasn't a female winner), it takes a lot for the male celebs to impress me these days, especially in comparison to the amazing male pros.

My thoughts on tonights show... Other than Ashley and Micheal, I didn't think guys were too bad. No super stand outs, but Mark impressed me and if he has the heart and drive, I think the talent is there for him to go far. But after tonight my guess is there are only two spots open in the final because if the fans could get Marie there, no doubt Donny will be there. At least he is a slightly better dancer and he does have charm. Lets just hope when it comes to his freestyle he learned what not do from his sister.
I also wasn't very impressed with the new Anna pro. Maybe she was a bit nervous though being it's her first show too.
Nice to see Shawn and Gilles cheering the new guys on!

Karina's oufit was all kinds of fugly. Those pants that had tatters and the boa looked like a costume party outfit gone very wrong. I also don't like her pairing with Aaron. She gives cougar vibes because of the age difference, but I don't think it's her fault. I just find them icky.
I kind of liked Ashley's comments and links on the board. But he did say he had no rhythm, yes ITA. You'd think after a lifetime around his Dad, he could project some stage presence. Maybe he just decided to be as different from Dad as possible.
Man, Anna D. sure isn't living up to the potential America saw in her. I'm sorry Michael got saddled with her, because I'm afraid it's going to be his undoing. I hope he'd stick around for awhile, but unless Anna loosens up and choreographs enough steps from the dance of the week, Michael is doomed.
I thought Mark focusing on his man boobs was pretty hysterical.
The skateboarding dude was cute and if figures Len is going to do everything short of ordering him to get his haircut. I lurve me some Chelsie. I hope Ty visits the set at least once.
Obviously Tom and Ashley are going first. I'm hoping there are a few clunkers with the ladies, because if Michael goes right away, I'm going to punch a hole through the TV and Anna D.

I love Louie and Chelsie, they are so cute togheter, they are the cute couple of the season, witch is good because they will get some extra votes.
I love Lacey and Mark cha cha, they were awesome.
Aeron is a good dancer but he is annoying, he look angry sometimes on the cha cha, and what is with Karina outfit, so ugly.
Didn't really care about the rest.
So cool to see Gilles and Shawn next to each other on the audience, i miss then.

There are some dancers who it's actually nice to see be more vocal and show more personality. Anna T.'s comments about Chuck beating people were funny. She seems to have much better comic delivery and timing than Derek Hough, yet Hough is the one who won't shut up and mugs constantly while Anna is more serious usually.

The only ones who stood out for me were Mark and Donnie. Donnie will probably do the best among the men but Mark could be the dark horse. I felt Chuck was awful, worse than Tom DeLay (I feel so sorry for Cheryl), it was like watching the "Putting On The Ritz" scene from Young Frankenstein.
Here's hoping the women are better.

Ashley was definitely bad, but what was that "song" (I use that term loosely) that he and Edyta were saddled with?
There is no way to compare the energy of that with Donny's "All that Jazz", which made the performance fun, even if it wasn't perfect.

Louie is just too adorable. I just want to put him in my pocket. And the shot of Louie/Chelsie against Anna D./Michael was interesting as well, to note the height difference between the two. He needs to slick his hair back more for the smooth dances, however.
There seems to be a great divide between the men so far. Aaron, Mark, Donny and Louie are ahead, while Chuck, Ashley, Tom, and Michael are near the bottom of the pack.
The nice thing about Aaron and Donny being up there is that if they keep this up, Karina and Kim have a shot of winning so that will be good. Cheryl's demeanor was so different during rehearsal with Tom versus with Gilles last year -- probably because she knows that Tom is not a real contender so she is relaxing and having fun. Poor, poor Edyta. Anna D. and Anna T. -- meh.
I don't know, I liked Mark quite a bit and do think he has some potential. I think he's going to be better on the Latin dances, though. Whereas, I thought Aaron got the jist of both styles. I wonder if Aaron is going to get the Sabrina edit. Star in first place with the judges who gets voted off by the fans.
Excited to see the women tomorrow. I think most of them will be good except for Macy. She looks like more of a train wreck than Ashley or even Tom's Cha Cha Cha.
I think Ashley will be the first man gone. Not only did he tie for the lowest overall score, but he is just meh and completely forgettable.

The opening number with the pros was fantastic.
The new pro Anna is bad all around, coach, choreographer and dancer.

Hope the women are a bit better, most of the men were very stiff.

I really liked Louie and Chelsea. His dancing was far from outstanding, but for someone that has never danced, Chelsea sure did a great job of teaching him the basics, and I think if he keeps putting in the effort he will certainly improve. I'd never heard of him before, so I don't know if he has a fanbase to speak of, but I hope he has enough of one to keep him around for a while.
I also liked Mark, and if Lacey doesn't try to be too edgy and too much "the rebel", and if he can channel himself, they will probably go far.
Donny, eehh....He seemed okay, but not spectacular, and his face making is very distracting. I want Kym to do well, so I guess I can tolerate him.
This does seem to be a very lackluster group so far, but I guess that's okay, since it is fun to watch people progress and learn to dance.
My prediction is that Ashley will go home first on the men's side or maybe Chuck, but I hope Chuck sticks around because at least he brings the personality to his dancing. Ashley is nice eye candy, but his overall demeanor and presence are dull as dirt.

I was thrilled with Mark's dance tonight, it wasn't full of Kung Fu as the judges want you to believe, but it was Kung Fu moves that are so good they stand out from the dancing. Okay. Fair enough. Mark has huge potential in this and will go very far. Already his lines and posture make Donny look like a paunchy old man... Donny is already insufferable. Aaron was just a little too hard I thought on the Cha Cha, and never smiled, but he had a nice VWaltz. Louie is adorable but he has absolutely no hips. The others, well, what can you do.
Why is Anna Demidova on the show? Mayo should have won. She sucked on that Samba with Maks last season and now this is just really too bad for Michael.

Louis shouldn't cut his hair for Len, but I do hate his hair. At the very least I agree he should do something with it for the ballroom dances.
Normally I don't like pitting the women against the men in terms of elimination, but I don't care this time since I think Macy would have left anyway. I know she hasn't danced yet, but I really can't see her being anything but a trainwreck. I was uncomfortable just watching her walk down the stairs with Jonathan. Poor Jonathan. If anybody deserves a good partner, it's him. So I'm totally calling Ashley and Macy as first gone and Tom will live to dance a second week.
I think Michael will have the fan support despite the low scores, so he's not going anywhere.

De-lurking to say that the song was Grace Kelly by Mika, and is actually a really fun song. When sung competently. I am not actually sure how to accurately describe what the band and singer did to it. But yes, what was done tonight was...not good.

So Far Dialidol has Michael Irvin in 1st, Donny Osmond in 2nd, Mark Dacascos 3rd, Aaron Carter 4th Louis Vito 5th, Chuck Liddell 6th Tom Delay 7th and Ashley Hamilton 8th
If this holds up, then Mark is in a very good position moving forward because the fans are putting him ahead of Aaron.

Why is Anna Demidova on the show? Mayo should have won. She sucked on that Samba with Maks last season and now this is just really too bad for Michael.
IA. I liked Anna D. but I loved Mayo. And so far, Anna D. is coming across as flat and humorless, which is really jarring when Michael has a ton of personality. Him pinning up a picture of Jerry Rice in his afro wig was hilarious. Loved it. But then Anna D. dragged him back down. Edyta would have been a terrific match for him, and even though I find her choreography flat at times, she would have been a better personality match. She's a lot of fun.
Tom Delay has a really creepy face. I thought maybe he was Botoxed, but then I saw older pictures of him, and nope. It's his face. His dancing was....eh. Like his face, creepy and uncomfortable. I don't want to see him shaking his ass ever again. Please, NO. But otherwise, I hope he's not the Cloris of this season and will outlast good dancers like Aaron. I've had enough of the trainwrecks on this show.
Ashley: If he were an injured horse, someone would have put him down already. Seems like a nice guy, but...he's totally the first one to go Wednesday night.
I actually prefered Louie to Donny in the Relay Samba. Technically, he wasn't that great, but Chelsia brought something out in him. He was much more appealing to watch. But then I fully and openly hate Donny. One show and I'm already sick of his, "Oh my Gosh! Wow! Thank you! I'm so humble!" act. I've already consoled myself with the fact that he's going to be in the finals, and will probably win. Ugh. He's a good dancer, but...I just HATE him. I do! I'm sorry to the Donny lovers, but ugh.
And "It's my Life" for a
foxtrot. No matter what version, Gwen or Talk Talk, I thought it really threw off their dance. Horrible song choice!
Lacey and Mark are my favs so far. And like someone already said, if you're going to have your song as "Kung Fu Fighting" and your celeb is known for Martial Arts, there's a 99.9% chance he's going to do Kung Fu moves. I hate the way Len always nitpicks Lacey's performances, no matter what she does. Did she run over his dog in a past life?
But besides that, Lacey and Anna T. looked STUNNING tonight. Also, in the ladies side, I thought Mya looked gorgeous, and even thought I was originally "meh" on her, I'm really looking forward to Kelly Osborne's dance. Maybe it's because she has Louis, but still. Those are the two from the ladies side I'm already anticipating.
I fully expect to have my hands over my eyes for Jonathan/Macy. Poor, poor Jonathan. Why does he always get the crazies?

I liked the opening. It seemed to be acknowledging that the pros are really the stars now, and the ones we are most excited to see (at least I am - I generally don't care what celebs are on the show except in the sense that they help or hurt my favorite pros).
The snowboarder guy was just adorable and so earnest in his effort, which made him even more adorable.
Aaron Carter looks older than his brother. That is one serious vein bulging out of his forehead. I could do with 90% less talk about how hot he thinks Karina is.
I know Donny Osmond is annoying and schmaltzy and overbearing, etc, but he was still the best male dancer tonight. He sold that foxtrot.
I like the mixed martial arts guy - like the snowboarder, he seems sincere and wants to do well and that goes a long way. Ashley Hamilton came off as a bit of jerk. "I nearly died and they thought I'd never walk - not that I'm making excuses but...you know I was in a wheelchair for a year." There was a blind item on one of the gossip sites about a DWTS contestant with a prescription drug-using past who was hoping he'd get injured so he could get painkillers...I'm thinking it's Ashley!
I am dreading tomorrow. Poor Jonathan. Have they not forgiven him for the Marie Osmond doll dance yet?

None of the male stars really impressed me. I was more excited to see Gilles in the audience. And I loved the male pros intro number. I hope I find a fave among the female stars tomorrow night. The pros are really more interesting to me now than the celebs.

I'm officially boycotting this season until Donny is gone, which unfortunately, isn't likely to be any time soon. So I guess I'll just rely on these boards to mention the highlights and go find those dances online to watch. Oh well, more time to watch House, Lie to Me & SYTYCD.

I actually think the raw scores are the most accurate, at least for other shows, and they place Mark in second behind Donny Osmond (which makes more sense than Michael in first place).
I too hope the female celebs light a fire under the men next week and I prefer when all of the celebs dance on the same night. I suppose that was impossible with such a large cast though.

If it weren't for Mark Dacascos, Mya, and Kelly Osbourne I'd join you. These three will have to wow me all season to overcome the Donny effect.

I just have to say that Chelsea is by FAR my favorite female pro on this show. Last year I was amazed by what she brought out of Ty and I feel like she's done it again. I think had Louie been paired with any other female, he would not have been as good as he was. She has a knack for teaching and making people comfortable - I really hope she goes far this season, just like last year.
I think the judges were overly harsh on Michael. I loved his performance and was shocked at their faces afterwards - I don't know what their issue is, but they need to loosen up. If they're going to be this cranky all season, I may have to tune out. I hate when they're this critical so early in the season. I hate when some people get away with personality (Donnie!) and get minimal critiques, but others get reamed out for it. It's obvious who the front runners are this season, they don't even really hide it anymore.

I might have been watching a different show than some of you. Louie (not Louis) is really not very good. And, I don't see much room for improvement. And, he really does need a haircut, or at least a style.
It's sad to admit, but I would have rather had Aaron or Donny singing the songs tonight instead of the actual DWTS singers. Yes, they are really bad. And, some of the song choices were just not fair. ugh
Didn't like Anna D last year ( during her dance comp) and I am not fond of her this year. Michael deserves better.
Also, did Cheryl and Lacey steal costumes from Edyta's closet? Put some clothes on girls, you're not Edyta.

What is with the ugly costumes, so many of them, Karina had the worst by far but the rest were not good either, Cheryl with a red version of her rumba dress with Gilles, the v.waltz relay dresses were good but the rest i didn't like at all.

Aaron should win by virtue of how he looked in those pants. The skin is jacked though.

I voted for Ashley/Edyta and Michael/Anna. The dudes aren't good dancers and I have no illusions that they'll come anywhere close to winning but I thought the judges were way too harsh in their comments. They can give them low scores without being jackasses about it. This is the first week, no need to break their spirits immediately - wait a few weeks and if they are still around, do it then.
