With the first minute and change of
Titan Maximum running on Adult Swim, I thought it would be the right time to start the thread. Basically, it's the gang from
Robot Chicken asking a simple question: what if teenagers had to save the world? And these aren't the benevolent kids from
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,
Voltron or whatever that Japanese cartoon is called this week (
G-Force?
Battle Of The Planets?). Nope . . . these are foul-mouthed, neurotic teens. You know, like the ones running around the malls these days.
Given the pedigree of the show, it should kick a serious amount of ass in the allotted time. The fact that Billy Dee Williams is voicing a character named Admiral Bitchface should be a huge bonus, especially with his recent voicework on
Robot Chicken ("What has two thumbs and sold out his best friend? THIS GUY!!!") The show drops on September 27, taking over the 11:30 slot
Robot Chicken will have vacated.

I'm a sucker for almost anything with a five-part combining giant robot. I'm not quite sure yet how I feel about having a monkey as part of the core team, though.
I wonder if we'll be lucky enough to see a Titan Maximum robot toy out by this Christmas.

I'm going to love this show. I can tell that already based on the 1:52 second clip alone.

I second that statement, Last Time Lord. Just from the first 1:52 alone, it looks awesome. I can't wait to see Billy Dee Williams in this, too. Admiral Bitchface is one of those awesome names that I can't stop saying.

Man, this series is gonna be AWESOME.
I was expecting a Cloverfield reference when Spud died.

Loved it, loved it, loved it! Between this and MegaBot, 2009 is the year of the giant robot series parody.
Is every episode going to be half hour? Because that was a nice surprise.
Really liking the villain.

Eh. If the RC crew are going long-form, with a cast of permanent characters, they'll need to switch their focus a bit from the ADD style humor to something more in the vein of Venture Brothers. But I'll definitely stick around to see how this turns out.

Really liking the villain.
"PISS!" Such a great expletive.
I loved that even Spud was like "When am I going to land?!" His eyes got more bug-eyed as he continued to fall. ("Sensitive viewers might want to avert their eyes." Har.)
"Sheez! I forgot to press talk!"
Quite an enjoyable half hour.

Nice; I was not expecting an old team/new team thing, with the villain being an ex-Titaneer. I also totally appreciate that the monkey isn't supposed to be cute.

I like that the "old team" was the classic five man band, complete with the broody/resentful second in command who's the most likely one to turn against the others. I'll stick with this one for a while at least.

Leon is the best character ever. Dude cracked me up every time they panned over to him.
I knew Rachel Leigh Cook was going to end up on this show. Seeing that Donald Faison was a nice surprise.
I don't think they need to change up anything writing wise to do this show. Just keep bringing the funny.
This was a good start.

Just the pilot, according to
wiki and
this interview with Senreich and Root. Normal episodes will run 15 minutes, just like Robot Chicken.

What I liked was that... well underneath the baggage or common teen stereotypes. We had people who had plausibly done this shit already.
From "the princess" not being a virgin so no naivete/feet of clay arc (THANK GOD) to the leader. Is he a self important vain meathead playing it up for the pootang and the media. Yes. Is he also an effective squad captain. YES. And the bitchy one. I'd hate her. Still do but her saving the reporter, obliquely without much fuss and just deciding (volunteering) to put her sweet ass on the line. Also she seems like the lipstick (as to butch) version of starbuck nbsg style. In particular. surprised how righteously offended she was by the treachery. She didn't scream "to me" or us but "this" meaning she hates what the villain's doing. Leader even tried the talk down and stopped at the appropriate junctor/point. In short as satires of the five man band they have some enormous potential. Especially as the villain isn't Xanatos or Light but more Prince Sincline (the original version of Prince Lotor from Voltron, able to fight, yeah but completely incompetent and held back by his MASSIVE issues and not as smart as he thinks he is). Admittedly I draw the comparison more for coincidently having GoLion on rent from Netflix than anything.

That was...not as good as I thought it would be.
I agree they seem to still be in "Robot Chicken mode". Like the guy wishing he could get out of his car lease then it getting stomped, was classic RC.
But definitely worth watching to see how it evolves.

Leon's even hilarious in the intro!
I do like the Astro Boy-inspired designs for most of the cast, especially Admiral Bitchface. For some reason I find the fact that Titan Maxnimum is under the jurisdiction of the Navy, and that Titan itself would have a Navy.
...That's it?! I wish this show really was half an hour long.

Is it just me, or are they finding ways to sneak the Spud character model into every episode? There was a guy in Jodi's martial arts class who looked like him, and now the Jester on Erriapus.

Is anybody else geek enough to know that some of the characters (particularly Jodi Yanarella and Sasha Caylo) are named after staff members from Wizard?

Sasha's first instinct with a gun was to throw it. Hilarious. And then the Ice Monster was genre savvy enough to pick up said gun to use it against TM.

I think that was a Monkey King of some sort.
I like the "Time to punch it the fuck out!" line, but there's gotta be variations to it. Ditto for Sasha's penchant for going for the groin. Gibbs flipping the bird at every opportunity is funny by itself, though. WHat a dysfunctional group that is.

I'm going with the monkey version of God. I love how Leon nonchalantly raised his hand, ready to die and go to heaven. His facial expression, equal parts no-nonsense, calm, and homicidal, is just awesome.

I also question why the Martian Prime Minister wasn't thrown into the lava at some point.

I loved Leon holding his martini. It was good to see a nice take on the animation-saving effort of some random passerby talking about the action instead of just showing it.
The Prime Minister also had the Spud head! And speaking of running gags, they just had to throw in a Lindsay Lohan expy, didn't they? Nice twist on her being a transsexual, though.

Spud's head shows up on one of the Eris hicks! (Speaking of which, the other two look like they had Palmer & Gibbs heads...)
Something great that this show accomplishes that Voltron never did: Have both arms fight each other, then have both pilots crawl through the bot to fight. Leon is still awesome.
Figured that Gibbs was going to talk Jodi into bed again. I so wish that this was half an hour. I don't want to wait a week to see exactly what Gibbs wants, or what Bithface & the Hammerschmidts are doing! (I predict a 2nd, more superior TM, which easily gets its ass kicked).

They're in love with one of the female models, too--the one with the short black hair. It's shown up in every episode, and was featured with the transvestite last ep. and the woman at the spa this ep.
"The worst sound your anus will ever hear!"

Yes, that was awesome. Even better is that they have a breakfast nook (which Sasha didn't know about). I always wondered if there were sleeping quarters or other amenities in giant robots...
Love that Leon's mouth remains set in a hard line, but his eyes were freaking out.
And, yes, this show needs a half hour. It's developed a nice little continuity. I wonder what the coil's all about, since Gibbs already has his bomb.
Has Sasha always had those blue streaks in her hair?

Yeah, but now I'm wondering where the hell the breakfast nook goes when Titan Maximum is separated. My guess would be that it's part of Titan Red/Palmer's fighter, but there really doesn't look like there's room for it. Unless this is one of those Hammerspace deals, maybe.
I don't want to wait a week to see exactly what Gibbs wants, or what Bithface & the Hammerschmidts are doing! (I predict a 2nd, more superior TM, which easily gets its ass kicked).
Or which Gibbs steals to battle Titan Maximum himself. Though the hardcore giant combining robot fan in me would also accept a sixth fighter that will combine with the existing five.

I would not mind a double twist of Gibbs being the good guy and Palmer being the real bad guy. Palmer is such an unlikable dick, on a team where they already have a MUCH MORE INTERESTING unlikable dick in the form of Sasha.
Palmer reaks of the sort of pretty boy villain/second-in-command type you see in most giant robot shows, the ones who constantly brag about how bad-ass they are. Maybe they can reveal him to be an alien overlord's son, sent to Earth to infiltrate it as part of an invasion scheme only for his dad to be pissed off that his son is a lazy partying braggart who didn't do anything he was told to do.

Sure, it was in the preview, but Titan Force 5 finding nothing but handicap spots was great.
Did they ever mention that Palmer was a surname? So that makes Willie "Willie Palmer." Hee. Speaking of Willie, his crayon-induced flashback of a soapbox derby that transformed into a soapbox Titan Maximum was awesome, along with the hilarious crayon fire.
We STILL haven't seen any resolution from last week aside from Gibbs being smug enough to record a sex tape of their act, and now the addition of an expy of The Watcher (along with an aside mentioning a multiverse). Oop, thanks to next week's preview, it seems that Bitchface & the Hammerschmidts went for the Titan Superior route...for now.

Awww, poor Jodi. I was actually willing to believe Gibbs when he said he was doing everything for a good reason so there is a part of me that hopes that he wasn't the one who leaked the tape but still...
I think the Jodi / Gibbs relationship is the best plot thread the show has so I hope we haven't seen the last of it.
As for the actual episode, not bad but not a whole lot happend, mostly a skipabble episode. I am looking forward to next week's though.
