Full Version: Best Potential Couples, Who Should Have Been But Never Were

Midnightsunrise
Who where the couples you wanted, to get together but never did, and that was wasted opportunities, on the show's behalf?

Griffin Holbrook and Claudia Salinger(Party Of Five)I saw some great chemistry between, Griffin and Claudia. I thought their scenes together in season five and their friendship, in the last season was really great. Claudia always, had a crush on and was defensive of Griffin, and he became protective of her, in the last season. I normally would think it was weird for Griffin to be with Claudia, because of Julia, but I did not mind it here, becuase in the later seasons, Claudia, to me was far more likeable then Julia, and between the music, seeing and liking Griffin for who he was, and the maturity, she portrayed, I found Claudia a better fit. I really wanted them to explore a romance with them, or have them form feelings, for each other, but not sure what to do because of the age diffrence, Julia and everyone's reactions.

Joey Russo and Six Lemere (Blossom)always, shipped them together. They had great chemistry, Six was always in love with Joey, and their where alot of times, when I wondered if he felt more for Six then he relized. I was so hopeful in season five, when they are stuck together and almost kiss, they would go somewhere, with them but they never did and it was such wasted, potential at a potentially great couple.

Lucas Scott and Hayley James (One Tree Hill)- I have shipped these two, since season 1 and them doing a Lucas and Hayley pairing may have gotten me to watch the show more. The best chemistry each had was with each other. They made far more sense together then her and Chris or Nathen and him with boring, Payton and Vapid Brooke. I always wanted to have the show, explore them really falling in love, and having Jamie, who like far more like CMM be Lucas's. I never saw the appeal of Hayley/Nathen and could not buy them long term. I always wanted them to have Lucas, relize his love for Hayley, and them end up. So many interesting directions, to give Hayley more story and Lucas, an actual LI he had chemistry with and I liked.

Dean Winchester and Bella Talbot (Supernatural)-Sigh... I loved the potentail so much and the execution was awful, and such a waste of a potentially hot and dark affair and great sexual chemistry between Jensen and Lauren. I never saw them working as a couple, but man would they have steamed up the sheets, and the sexual tension, between them in their last episode together esp Dean, getting all up in Bella's personal space, and slamming her against the wall and not in an abusive way, they sizzled. Instead of going for the nasty, repulsive chemistry free, affair of Sam and Ruby, they should have had Bella be from Dean's past and have him have an affair with her, which would have made her dark and evil turn, more visiral and personal, for Dean. Not only was Bella's whole character poorly handled, but the potentail at a interesting and hot hookup for Dean, when they so failed with LI for him, was so ruined and wasted, it still makes me sad, becuase they sure had the chemistry to back it up.

Jason Morgan and Brenda Barrett(General Hospital)I loved these 2 together so much. Brenda was so snarky and difent, with Jason and VM had amazing chemistry with SB. I adored their begruding and tenitive like and friendship, but underline hate. Their was actually good sexual tension here. I am torn on wheather I wanted them to be a real couple, becuase Brenda would have had to be a spinless, mob worshipper sacrifised at Jason's alter, but they where one of Soaps best potentail and non couples, and she actually made Jason likeable.

Zander Smith and Maxie Jones (General Hospital)-I liked the friendship with Zander and RR Maxie, before CB left the show. They where never actually a couple, but Maxie clearly had a thing for Zander, and his friendship, protectivness and care for her, was very sweet. She is one of the few women I liked with Zander. I always liked him but never with Carly, Liz and esp Emily. I could have even seen Zander with KS Maxie. They had a great potential couple, but wasted it with never exploring more depth and killing off Zander.

For some weird reason, I always wanted to see Dick and Mack from Veronica Mars have some kind of relationship. Not necessarily a romantic relationship, but having a kind of connection after the whole Cassidy disaster. I think it would have added alot of depth to their characters, and would have been an interesting contrast to the Logan/Veronica relationship. Mabye not as some long term love thing, but as a sort of coping mechanism that led to actual feelings. Plus I thought the actors had an interesting chemestry in the few scenes they shared, and could have done a really good job with the more dramtic material unlike what they got on the show.
ReadIshmael
I'm still kind of mad that Daria and Trent (Daria) never happened. I don't think I've ever shipped something so loyally that never came to fruition. And, yeah, it probably wouldn't have worked out in the long run, but I really wanted to see them give it a try.
SunlessNick
Kate and Sayid from Lost.
cacophony
Shows that ignore obvious chemistry drive me nuts. Chakotay and Janeway from Voyager. Why did that never happen?
LauraMD
I always wanted Sara to end up with Greg instead of Grissom on CSI. I thought they had much better chemistry.
Turkish
Callie/Mark on Grey's Anatomy - Such wasted potential there. At least they are keeping them as best friends but the two have more chemistry together than they do with their current partners.
Blisters
After watching TOW With The Flashback, I started shipping Ross and Phoebe. Even if it was just for like 5 episodes or something, I think that would've been hilarious - they'd probably drive each other crazy, but I really really wanted it to happen for a while.
GoldfishGirl42

WORD. After that episode where they thought they were going to be stranded on the Eden planet for the rest of their lives, I shipped them hardcore for the rest of the series. (Granted, I was 9-14 years old at the time, but still.) I loved Beltran and Mulgrew's chemistry, and screamed when the show did Chakotay/Seven near the end.

And I was not alone. I still have a picture my best friend drew for me of Janeway/Chakotay. (Actually, it's of them as horses, because we were really into horses at the time, but same difference.)
Split Ends
Carter/Chen on ER. Each character had better chemistry with each other than any other love interest. This was Carter's only chemistry-filled interaction (aside from Benton) and they ignored it....why?
Videostar
Andrea/Steve from Beverly Hills 90210: I always liked their interactions (from the SATs to trying to exchange an egg). Plus she came back for his 21st birthday. A total odd couple that could have worked for at least a little while.

Jack/Topanga from Boy Meets World: The few times I saw them together they seemed to have really good chemistry. Plus she would have ended up with someone better than that stupid jerk Cory.
pinkmoon
I may be alone in this but Romano/Corday on ER. I loved her with Benton and just loved her in general, but the second they put her with Mark she became a shrill. Except on her scenes with Romano. For awhile there (between the 1st and 2nd helicopter, heh) when they toned him down a bit I actually wondered if TPTB would go with that... They never did, of course.
Put Name Here
Veronica/Weevil from Veronica Mars. I didn't enjoy any of her boyfriends (except Leo and Troy) and the Veronica/Weevil chemistry was better then any of them.

And there was so much they coud do with them: Keith dealing with Veronica dating a guy he had arrested, the class difference, Veronica's feelings about using Weevil for less then legal favours, Weevil trying to go straight, Lilly, etc.

But no, we had they soul (and show) crushing Veronica/Logan to drag the later episodes to a screetching halt.
Turkish
I was so pissed at how little they used Weevil during that last season. Wallace as well. Kristen Bell had more chemistry with Francis Capra than she did with most of the guys they tried to put her with so I don't get what happened there. Fans, for the most part, responded well to them. The writers just seemed to have a hard on for Logan and Weevil got pushed to the side. They gave me hope there for a second and then took it all away.
Craphole Island
Though it was never going to happen, I'm going to say Summer/Ryan on The OC. I don't know if I ever wanted them to be a couple, but I always wanted them to have more scenes together because I thought Rachel and Ben had great chemistry. I loved Summer/Seth though. Maybe I just wanted Ryan and Summer to have less scenes with Marissa and more with each other. Heh.
magicdog
As far as the series Charmed goes, there were a few.......

In season 1, Phoebe met a man who had been kidnapped and blinded as a child by demons. She needs his help to try to find the demons who were now after new children. There seemed to be some hints of romantic tension as he's teaching her to read a braille map with his hand over hers. The two of them together looked like a good match and it would have been interesting had the two continued to see one another.

In season 2, the character of Phoebe has a crisis of giving up on love (before it became the focus of nearly every episode of the last season) and she was getting advice from a cupid. The actor who played cupid wasn't a conventionally hot guy, but far from ugly and he seemed to have quite a bit of chemistry with Alyssa Milano. That cupid leaves and is never seen again. In the final season Phoebe gets help from another cupid and eventually marries him - but the chemistry was sorely lacking. I thought they should have brought the first cupid back if they were going with that storyline.

In season 3, Prue apparently had an interest in a guy named "Mitch" who resembled a guy they met in 17th century Virgina (long story) named "Micah". Apparently it looked like there was going to be more to Mitch than what we saw of him, but the storyline was abruptly changed so we never got to see how things might have turned out between her and Mitch.

In the Andy Griffith Show, Andy meets up with a female pharmacist (played by Elinor Donahue) who moves to Mayberry. I remember she was in several eps during the first season but as I recall, she never moved past the friendship stage with Andy (I could be wrong as it's been a while since I've seen these eps) and I think they would have made for a better couple than that crank, Miss Crump!
SnarkySheep
magicdog, I agree -- I thought Andy and Ellie made a way better couple! She was much nicer and straightforward than Helen, good with little Opie, etc. And yes, they did go out a number of times, so there was some couple-y-ness going on.

However, she left after the end of Season 1. I recall reading once, a while back, that it had something to do with the actress' chemistry with Andy Griffith -- apparently either The Powers That Be felt that the two characters didn't click, or else it was Andy Griffith himself who wasn't feelin' it, I can't remember which at this point.
Midnightsunrise
I kind of Shipped Paige and Cole on Charmed. I never really liked Phoebe, or saw any chemistry between JM and AM, But I liked the Paige/Cole interactions and their where times she helped him, when he came back, that I saw some spark and thought it could be interesting.

I really think Jen/Pacey on Dawson's Creek, would have made a better, hotter couple, then him and awful Joey. JJ has chemistry with everyone and I liked the sexy, fun flirty stuff, with Pacey and Jen, and if I could not have him with Andie, I would have liked to have seen a real relationship between them explored. They had alot more in common, then he did with Joey and I do not think Dawson's would have been the interloper with them, as he was with P&J.
Benedictine
AD Walter Skinner and Special Agent Dana Scully from The X-Files. I know that most fans wanted to see Mulder and Scully get together, but throughout the series the chemistry between Skinner and Scully was much stronger. You could tell that Skinner had it really strong for Scully and that she would have gradually warmed up to him until she threw herself into his open arms and made mad passionate lustful ---- ah, you get the idea!
IseutLaBrune
This is pretty dead and gone, but I still have a 'ship in my heart for Ted and the coatcheck girl from the first season "Okay Awesome" episode of How I Met Your Mother. It was actually the first episode of the show that I saw so maybe that affected my bias, but I just loved the way they connected and think that they had more sweet chemistry in that one scene than Ted had over several episodes with Victoria or Stella.
Friscosgirl
Carter and Chen for the win!

I can barely stand watch the episodes when she's having the baby or when she goes through that shit with Weaver (The Longer You Stay?) because the chem is so sparkly. The hug on the roof of the hospital... le sigh. My cousin and I would be yelling at the screen, "Kiss her, dude, kiss her!"
veritykindle85
Carter/Chen, yes. I was rather fond of the notion of Carter/Lucy before that, but that, er, didn't go so well.

The second season of Roswell had very little to recommend it, but I adored Kyle and Tess's flirtation. Comic and light and just fun, with solid chemistry, until the show went super alien-heavy, revisited her obsession with Max, put them together for a brief, but ill-fated and procreative stint, and then revealed that she killed Colin Hanks and finally shipped her off to her home planet. Stupid retcons killing my bantering comic relief non-couple.
Nancy Grew
I would have liked a Willow/Riley pairing on BtVS. I thought the actors had chemistry and the writers wrote them several scenes which I thought were 'shippy. Their first meeting was funny and established they were both bright and had at least some similar interests. The scenes where Willow was helping Riley woo Buffy were cute as was the scene where Riley got protective of Willow's feelings at the frat house when someone played some music by Dingos Ate My Baby. They also had a similar goofy sense of humour; they both wanted to see Giles in his Halloween wizard costume and wanted to sing a silly song when they went to Xander's new apartment. I believe that the commentary on the episode where Willow threatened to beat him to death with a shovel even mentioned that the writer thought they had chemistry together.
SunlessNick
Riley got protective of Willow's feelings at the frat house when someone played some music by Dingos Ate My Baby.
Is that the part where he said there was no hurry wrt Buffy if Willow wanted someone to talk to? That was his best moment, I think (I didn't especially like him, but that was nice).

I got converted to the cause of Buffy/Oz, though it's the sort of pairing I would have favoured coming years later.
GoodyGoody
For me, Clark and Chloe on Smallville own this thread. Many seasons of chemistry filled "best-friend"-ness kicked aside for the cockamamie shoehorning in of Lois.
wwhk
I know that the CJ/Toby ship over on The West Wing isn't for everyone, but it certainly had its admirers and supporters. Allison Janney and Richard Schiff have great chemistry and they even admitted to playing some of their scenes with a romantic bent. CJ and Toby have clear similarities and there are clear ways that their differences would compliment each other. CJ's witty and vivacious personality is the perfect thing to bring Toby out of his dark moods. Toby's perceptiveness allows him to look past CJ's front and see her deeper problems and issues. They've always been there for each other. I wouldn't call myself a "shipper", per se, but I do think that they could potentially make a brilliant couple with good writing. I do prefer them with each other than Toby with Andi or CJ with Danny- their main canon ships.
pinkmoon
wwhk, I totally agree. But, to be honest, I kinda consider them canon. In that episode where Josh and Toby fight CJ comes to Toby and says something like "Can this be one of those nights when we get sloshed and forget we work together?" -- I really can't see that scene as anything but sometimes-they-used-to-hook-up. I would've liked to see a relationship, yes, 'cause that could have been really interesting, but I dig that it never happened and it was mainly subtext. Gives me a sense of tragic, the-timing-wasn't-right type of thing.
strange love
Lisa/Zack (Saved by the Bell)! Maybe its because they were together in real life for years, but I saw a lot of potential chemistry in that one episode they had them on a date. It wasn't fair that Lisa (who I thought was the prettiest, by far) never had anyone on the show. Only Screech bothering her.
Midnightsunrise
I also liked the idea of Ryan/Summer on The OC. Esp when Marrissa died, I was hopeing in their grief they would turn to each other. It would have made alot more sense then the awful, Ryan/Julie hookup and I thought Ryan and Summer had good chemistry and would have created new tensions for Ryan and Seth.

David Creagan and Susan Bronca Touching Evil. Their was so much chemistry and sexual tension between Bronca and Creagan and Vira Farmiga and Jeffery Donavan, where great together. I was so dissapointed the show was cancelled esp when in the finale it was clear they had feelings for each other. This was a diffrent and cool will they or won't they? dynamic.

Doctor/Martha Jones.
Yeah, RTD says Rose was Twue Wuv and all, but Martha's been my favorite and I feel Freema was far better at conveying emotional depth.
Bussy
Kate/Sayid is the be-all end-all for me. This would have been a much better direction for the Kate character. Back in season one when I really liked her, I loved the little hints that maybe he had a crush on her, and the way they were always working together on projects. The hand-kiss still makes me squee. He has always made her so much more tolerable than she is with anyone else, mostly because he treats her with respect and loyalty and makes her useful... unlike some people. Sometimes being treated like a great person can make someone actually act it. They would have worked beautifully, and that's an "I love you" I actually would have bought (unlike the Shannon/Sayid one, even though I liked that pairing well enough). And then there could have been some awesome angst and confusion when they went home because Nadia would have been there and then Sayid would have to pick between Nadia and Kate. It could have been less of a straight-up angsty love triangle and more about the question of choosing between a long-held fantasy and a reality that is troubled but pretty good. Also? If they HAD to go a love triangle route, Sawyer v. Sayid would have been so much more interesting.

I also totally agree about Zach/Lisa. I always wanted it so badly. I didn't know they were together in real life for awhile! That, at least, makes my hopeless shipper heart happy. She was definitely the prettiest of the bunch, and smart and cool, to boot.

Also a shout-out for Sark/Sydney on Alias. If they weren't going to go the sibling route, I never understood why the writers didn't have something happen between them during the season 3 amnesia/Julia Thorne plotline. Lots of people wanted to see it, and they still could have ended with Sydney/Vaughn once she regained her memory and understandably dumped Sark. What is the point of amnesia if it doesn't lead to scandalously inappropriate hook-ups? ;)

And why the Heroes writers didn't do Ando/Daphne will never fail to baffle me. It was so obvious and adorable and halfway there when they randomly started the horrible and chemistry-free repressive stalker plotline with Matt.

I also always shipped Dale/Gadget from Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers. This may have been my first-ever ship. He was so endearingly helpless and wanted her so badly.
Ulkis
Veronica/Weevil from Veronica Mars. I didn't enjoy any of her boyfriends (except Leo and Troy) and the Veronica/Weevil chemistry was better then any of them.

I would've enjoyed seeing that, not least of all because I think Weevil was the hottest guy. (Meh, Logan.)
wwhk
I mentioned CJ/Toby of West Wing fame before, but there's also Sam/Ainsley. I liked Ainsley so much more than any of Sam's other romantic interests and there's no denying that Sam and Ainsley could have had legendarily beautiful children, albeit politically confused ones.
cacophony
I was watching some M*A*S*H* reruns last night and was reminded of one of the great tragedies of television. The untimely departure of Wayne Rogers wrecked a fantastic potential hookup between Trapper and Margaret. They only alluded to it in maybe 3 episodes but damn! Trapper and Hot Lips had some wicked chemistry.
LaGinger
All these years later, I'm still distressed that Brandon and Andrea never had an actual relationship on Beverly Hills, 90210. So many hints! So many teases! No payoff. They could have at least had sex on prom night and then dealt with the fallout. Grr.... I realize that Gabrielle Carteris was in her 30s and looked it on the show, but she and Jason Priestly had better chemistry than Priestly and the rest of his rotating stable of love interests. Also Andrea was the only one that called Brandon on his crap.

Also, I loved the idea of Jessie and Zach together on "Saved By The Bell" and I thought that they had much more chemistry than Zach/Kelly and Jessie/Slater. Plus I liked the idea of childhood friends realizing deeper feelings. I also enjoyed the one episode Zach/Lisa relationship.

I have to resort to fanfiction for these pairings, people, and there isn't even very much of that. Sigh...
Split Ends
LaGinger, I agree Brandon and Andrea had more chemistry than any other pairing Brandon had. I always got the feeling TPTB thought Andrea wasn't pretty enough for Brandon and therefore wouldn't allow sex to happen.

Wow, I haven't thought about them in years, but I totally agree! I watched every week hoping and praying that this would be the episode where Zach and Jessie would finally hook up, but noooo.

And I know Jessie's caffeine pill spree is widely and deservedly laughed at, but wasn't it sweet that Zach was there for her when she was so excited and so scared? I thought so too! :)

I always thought it was because Gabrielle Cateris got pregnant which made them write in Jesse. Weren't they leaning towards an actual Andrea / Brandon thing right before that?
Worthingbum66
Jason/Gia MR version(GH)-They had great chemistry, and would have been interesting and so pretty.

Blair/Dan(GG)-They have alot of chemistry, and it would be a great shake up and provide some great angst, for alot of the canvas.

I echo Jessie/Zach(SBTB) and Brandon/Andrea(BH 90210)-Great potential, a believable foundation and chemistry. I am upset they never went there.
MissMoneyBags
Bashir/Garak on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Yeah, I know the writers and network were so not even remotely ready to "go there" with a gay storyline. But Siddig and Robinson had fantastic chemistry, they've both gone on record as saying it crossed their mind, and it would have had AWESOME payoff during the Dominion war storyline, especially when Bashir was recruited by Section 31. I'm still so disappointed that as progressive as the Trek tradition was supposed to be, they didn't even try.

Shows that ignore obvious chemistry drive me nuts. Chakotay and Janeway from Voyager. Why did that never happen?

Man, I didn't even "ship" Janeway/Chakotay in an active sense, but I thought they had mad chemistry and was annoyed at how the writers just kind of dropped it.

Speaking of Voyager, in the early seasons I was a major Kim/Torres shipper. They worked together seemingly all the time, and I liked how she seemed more relaxed with him than almost anybody else. Plus, one of the earliest episodes I ever saw was the one where Voyager is split into two versions of itself, and Torres watches Kim die on one of them... I remember wondering if they were going to be together. Alas. (Although I don't really object to Paris/Torres, per se.)

Oh, and I preferred Seven with Tuvok. Damn, I never realized just how brutal that show was to my ships!
Gladiola
Wilson and Cameron on House would've been so juicy. House would immediately assume they're together just to spite him. It basically writes itself.
SnarkySheep
Gladiola, I agree! And besides that, they basically are of a similar nature, kind of quietly observing, and yet -- largely bc of House -- they've both learned to stand up for themselves when they need to.
McKay
I've been watching my season three Office DVDs lately, and my god, I know this could never have happened, but I still think Pam and Karen had way more chemistry than Karen and Jim ever did.

...just me then? No problem, I'll show myself out.
rory
I have to agree with everyone who said Brandon/Andrea(90210), they had so much more chemistry than him and Kelly.

I also agree with Griffin/Claudia(Po5), Julia belonged with Justin, but these two had chemistry.

Joey/Rachel (Friends)
the hero factor

Well, McKay, I think it's safe to say it isn't *just* you.

And speaking of teh femslash, Captain Janeway and Seven of Nine are still my favorite ship ever. They really should have been. Sigh.
mehtaphysical
I have to agree with everyone who said Brandon/Andrea(90210), they had so much more chemistry than him and Kelly.

Count me in at this table as well.

Sam and Harrison on "Popular." They have the dubious distinction of being a potential TV couple dangled in front of the audience and then annihilated because Ryan Murphy had a hard-on for Brooke/Harrison.

S/H were always too close and attracted to each other to be platonic friends. He always called her "Sammy" in the most affectionate tone ever, and Sam frowned upon his crush on Brooke.
When Harrison bleached his hair and Sam couldn't help but drool over him, it seemed like the writers were finally acknowledging their special relationship.
By the time Harrison finally told Sam he was in love with her, she had a stupid boyfriend she refused to leave, so Harrison slept with Brooke in retaliation. After that, Brooke was under the impression she was now Harrison's girlfriend and made sure she kept her claws in him. Thanks for nothing, Murphy.

Wordy, McWord Benedictine. That would have been hot! (Fans self).

I also want to sit at the Andrea/Brandon table.
