Found a topic for the 80s sitcom
Brothers, but not the new show that's on Fox's fall lineup:
http://blogs.houstonpress.com/hairballs/20...dy_brothers.phpFox Network just announced its fall schedule, and in just under the wire is Brothers, a low-key comedy set in Houston starring former Westbury and TSU star and future NFL Hall of Famer Michael Strahan. The Hollywood Reporter claims Brothers received strong feedback during the pilot's test-viewings last week, and that Fox has signed for 13 episodes.
Supporting cast features CCH Pounder (yay!) and Daryl "Chill" Mitchell, in case anyone wondered whatever happened to those two.
From the article, it sounds like they've already got a tough crowd. The guy doesn't sound too optimistic about the show's success...

That reviewer had a number of nitpicks about the show's format being formulaic...without addressing if it did the formula well. I've liked Pounder and Mitchell in other roles and would tune in just to check it out, formula or not, as the commercials have been amusing so far.

Ugh.
Its HORRIBLE.
It's not just that its a formula. It's that its badly done.
The acting (except for Strahan) isn't THAT bad, but the writing (especially the dialogue) is just putrid.
The only thing which works consistently are the occasionally sight gags. Many of which, face it, have to do with Mitchell being in a wheelchair. Or Strahan being really tall and strong.
This was like one of those really bad UPN sitcoms from years back. You know... the ones too bad to even make their way over to TheWB.

I'm not sure the double whammy of CCH Pounder and Carl Weathers can keep me coming back with this one (until Fox inevitably kills it, of course). I didn't think it was horrible, but it was so very been-there-done-that.

Geez. I was hoping this show would be great. The promos looked promising. I missed the airing of this show so I am now pondering if it is even worth my time.

Fox is reairing the pilot on Sunday (7pm EDT, I think). I may give it a second chance then, just to be sure.

Thank you for the heads-up on the re-airing of the pilot. I was just trying to find out when it airs again.

Hey, I'm glad to see so much of the former cast of "Ed" is working now (Julie Bowen is on the FAR superior "Modern Family") . But this just was weak. It felt like the comedic values were taken from the days of "Fresh Prince of Bel Air". Well, we've got stuff like "The Office" and "30 Rock" now.
Feh.
Now where's Tom Cavanagh? HE needs a sitcom. We've had bits of him on "Scrubs", "Trust Me" and "Eli Stone".

I watched it and it amused. Not the greatest as far as the writing. I don't know that it'd get any better. I like Carl Weathers and CCH Pounder (they have great chemistry and it's nice to a black couple on tv that have been married for decades and still love each other and show it) that I'll probably tune in regularly for at least a few more episodes. If it doesn't improve, I'll probably catch if nothing else is on until it gets cancelled.
Pretty much everything has been done to death so saying something is formulaic isn't helpful.

I have no doubt that this show will be cancelled, if it hasn't been already, but I have to say that I didn't find it to be terrible. The pilot was watchable, the second show (on the same night as the pilot) was funnier, and third episode was ok. My biggest gripes are as follows:
1) Daryl Mitchell making one or two jokes about being in a wheelchair could be ok. A joke every 5 minutes of every episode? Not so much.
2) "Sense and Sensibility 2: Darcy's Revenge" - - I refuse to believe the writers didn't understand what was wrong with that joke when they wrote it. My guess is they thought the audience wouldn't know what was wrong with it. Piss. Me. Off.

The only thing I like about it is the wheelchair stuff. It's a relief to see a character who uses a chair and is not de-sexualized, all about self-pity, adjusting to his new situation, or having everyone treating him like a he's pitiful/a tragedy.
The rest of it is just kind of there. It's not offending me like some of the worst sitcoms do (it's not about a "hot wife with idiot husband" -- one of the sitcom cliches that annoys me the most). I like that the conflict is about normal levels of people trying to get along in close quarters, rather than about a long suffering martyr with an absurdly idiotic sidekick, or some other extra lazy sitcom nonsense. But it's not especially clever or side-splittingly amusing either.
It's like FOX thought: we can throw the viewers one show a week with African American characters, and since there's nothing else with that kind of cast, people who want that will watch it; we don't have to be too concerned with it being especially great.
I know for sure that I gave it a try because of that, plus the existence of a character in a chair, and I'm now watching because of the chair stuff only. I figure they doubled up on "viewers not represented elsewhere" and tried to net us all in one show. And hey-- on me, it worked. Grudgingly, and at least for a few episodes. I'm not sure how many more I'll stick around for.
