Who knows who will be actually dancing? Let's tune in and find out.
BradyB66
Two questions:

Does Ty remind anyone besides me of Chris Penn in "Footloose"?

and

When did Bruno become such a bitch?

I'll have to remember to wear sunglasses next week when Tony and Melissa perform. Those white teeth are blinding!
loseresque
I'm a little tired of people who are really awesome in the first week. I know that sounds unfair but it's not really all that fun to watch someone be good all season anymore. I liked it with Kristi but since then, I've been getting bored with that "storyline." I'm also tired of the Houghs, Ballas and Cheryl winning.

This year, I'm really liking the people who seem to be totally outside their comfort zone. And also those who are humorous and positive. In that respect, I am totally rooting for Steve-O and the Woz. Their attitudes won me over.

Don't kill me.
GridIronGrrL
I had a DVR malfunction and only saw the last half.

Good for Melissa! I love watching someone genuinely excited to be there and I thought she was charming and graceful.

Holly Madison is horrible. Looked like she was trying hard, but she was very gangly.

Never thought I'd find myself liking the apple guy, but I thought it was hilarious to see him meet his partner on the Segway and then smile his way through the routine. what a great attitude!

Loving all of the SYTYCD additions to the show :)
teevee
Melissa, who?

I missed Lil Kim's performance. Was looking forward to it but will watch later. Shawn and Melissa (obvious she was a dancer) were the best of the night. Chuck, Gilles, and David showed potential. Lacey ("The Rebel" har har clever) seems less annoying with Steve O. Aaaaakward moment with the Apple man's drug comment after his critique.

Go away, Samantha. Take Denise and the spray tan tools with you. Some were crossing into Oompa Loompa/baked territory--looking at you Julianne and Shawn!

This season's celebs appear to be sweet and trying hard. Most were forgettable, though. I hardly ever get bothered by the mean comments but Bruno annoyed me. Maybe it is because I missed last season.
tip and fall
It looks like Shawn stumbled on the last stair when she was walking down the staircase for the first time (tell me I wasn't the only one who saw that). Oops. I was practically holding my breath through her routine because I was paranoid she'd fall then, too. Heh.

I actually liked Derek's opening intro this time, when he ribbed Mark, and Mark's rebuttal. But gee, think they came up with that stuff on their own? I just hope that it doesn't become a running theme throughout this season.

If this week in any indication, I have a feeling that Denise is gonna be like Shannon Elizabeth, personality-wise: very emotional and needy. I got the sense that the judges were kinda treating her with kid gloves during their critique; maybe they were afraid she'd start crying. Not that that's ever stopped them before...

Oh, and my favorite quote of the night:

Cheryl: You need to look like a man!
Gilles: Are you telling me that I don't?

Aw, I love Gilles already. :D
spanana
This is a weird cast. In terms of dancing I like Gilles, Shawn and DAG. Melissa is going to be good, but I'm not sure how I feel about her inclusion yet. She reminds me of Ashly in a way. In terms of looks.

Julianne is already annoying the crap out of me. Denise too. She's crying in the first episode?

Ty is adorable, but not a good dancer. I liked Chelsie here though. She's still preferable to Lacey for me. But in a wierd way I think getting pared with Steve O has calmed Lacey down. She knows she's not going to win so she's not trying so hard.

The dance off twist certainly will help someone like Gilles, who has an obvious lack of fanbase. Unless he falters in the next few weeks, the judges won't get rid of their most promising male dancer.
jonaswan2
Does Ty remind anyone besides me of Chris Penn in "Footloose"?

I wish I would have known about Ty before I did my high school production of "Footloose" (I was Willard). I would have rocked it out if I would have based it on him. ;)
mcryan
Speaking of look alikes...Belinda Carlisle is really channeling Priscilla Presley.
troubleinmind
With the exception of Gille's dancing/personality, I can't say there's any "star" I am interested in watching. I still enjoy the pros though. Who knows, maybe that will change. So far, it's the worst season for me. Loved seeing Dimitri and Chelsea again.
Augurey
Never thought I'd find myself liking the apple guy, but I thought it was hilarious to see him meet his partner on the Segway and then smile his way through the routine. what a great attitude!

I loved Steve too! He'll be getting my votes tonight.

I don't know what was up with Bruno tonight. I thought his Cloris Leachman comparison to Belinda was quite unfair, and he stayed pissy throughout the night.

I thought the show started off limply. An opening pro dance may have fixed that, but I can understand the time constraints. Even though Kim and Derek looked good, something was kind of off. I don't know if it was the choreography or the tempo of the song, but it felt kind of lethargic. I was disappointed.

Shawn was quite good. I think she tripped on the staircase introduction, so I was worried for her, but luckily she didn't trip (and Mark avoided tripping over her dress like Derek did his first season). I'm also happy she wasn't overscored; she'll probably continue to receive backlash no matter what, so there is no need to add fuel to the fire.
MuppetCoat
Oh Woz... You're so bad, and so adorkable.
wordjunkie
Steve Wozniak, you hot bitch! You're a freak. And I like that.
chefcatt
Most delicious male dancer - Gilles
Dancer I most want to see succeed -- Woz
Costume that scared me the most -- Woz's partner.... I'm not sure how it even stayed in place to cover the naughty bits.
RebeccaCP
It looks like Shawn stumbled on the last stair when she was walking down the staircase for the first time (tell me I wasn't the only one who saw that). Oops.

It wasn't just you. Definitely slid a bit forward there.
Nutbucket
Melissa, who?

Melissa the ringer. She was a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader and has extensive dance training. It's a good choice for a last minute replacement, since she already can dance, but it goes against the purpose of the show, IMO. I didn't like this girl on the Bachelor and I almost wasn't going to watch DWTS, but I love Cheryl too much to pass it up. Looks like Cheryl has a decent partner this time so she'll be gracing our screens for quite some time. Yippee for that!
Tasya
-I'm already tired of Julianne and Julianne's Boyfriend. I thought he was much worse than they scored him, but i'm not surprised that he got scored higher.

-I am surprised that DAG wasn't better. I expected more. I had a feeling that his expressive face might get him in trouble, he always seems to be on the verge of laughing. If he can't get his expressions under control, he's going to be in trouble.

-I enjoyed Gilles, Steve-O and Lil Kim the most, I hope that they stick around a while. I never watched Jackass regularly, but I thought that I would cry a little during his segment. I know someone who had to hit rock bottom before he saw that he needed to change, so it struck a note. I admire the fact that he's doing this and rehab and seems to want to give it his all. Lil Kim was cute with her shout out to the jailbirds. I can't stand Derek but for her sake, i'll deal. I did not see the SITC movie, I never watched the show either. But I may have to look the movie up after tonight. He's very nice to look at and not bad on the dance floor.

-I thought that Holly whoever was awful, and that stupid little giggle she kept doing was so annoying. It's like she had nothing occupying her brain but air. Possibly too much peroxide.

Overall I think that Len's bias still shows through and I hope it doesn't ruin another season for me. I hate when you know even before he holds up his card that his number will be higher or lower than Carrie's depending on exactly who danced. I correctly predicted every one of his scores tonight.
GoldenWoman
My favorites tonight were Gilles, Shawn, DAG and Lil Kim. I cannot believe that Denise is already crying. I would actually like to see her voted off first. I give Melissa and Holly a lot of credit I know I could never do something like that. Tom was once again brilliant and Sam was terrible.
Midge
I thought the Woz was way better then they gave him credit for. Plus he needs to stay on because it's obviously annoying the heck out of Karina to dance with him. Fun.
Winnie Rose
Gilles and Shawn are definitely my favorites so far. I have a weakness for really sexy men and people from Iowa.

Cheryl: You need to look like a man!
Gilles: Are you telling me that I don't?

Priceless.

And Steve Wozniak is the most adorable computer geek I've ever seen. Don't know if he'll make it past next week, but I'm rooting for him!
MerBear
I enjoyed pretty much everyone except Denise. Melissa did a great job and all of her dance background showed through. She does remind me of an Osmond though and that is NOT a compliment. I really think the guys with NO background should be given some kind of extra points like Ty, Woz, Steve O!!
Pj3422
I'm sorry, but throughout Denise Richards' dance, I was thinking of her "talent" routine in Drop Dead Gorgeous -- so, so wrong and utterly hilarious. I will completely lose it if she ever has to dance to "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You."

Way to go, Melissa!

I'm also liking the Woz. Great attitude, and I have a thing for nerds. But he's more graceful on a Segway.

Really? DAG dancing to freakin' Debby Boone?
sweetpd7
This is a weird cast.

Never before have we had two stars back out from injuries before the show. TPTP really had to dig to find the Bachelor reject chick. Chuck Wikes just got replaced as the least known or qualified star.

I thought the Woz was charming and gave it a good go, but he is leaving fast. I hope Denise "boo hoo" Richards goes soon. I could see Denise replace Shannon as most annoying, wooden dancer. I liked Gilles (I mean what's not to like??), Shawn, and despite that only luck got her here, Melissa. I think DAG could improve, but I think Lawrence Taylor is a long shot. Not sure how I feel about Lil Kim, other than the prison jokes were bazaar. I think Lindsay and Steve O kind of sizzle. I want to see if he improves enough to be a contender. I also felt Samantha was more poised and sensitive than usual.
Augurey
Speaking of look alikes...Belinda Carlisle is really channeling Priscilla Presley.

If I didn't know any better, I would have assumed Belinda was Priscilla's forgotten sister who had to make do with whatever money was leftover from Priscilla's plastic surgery sprees.

She seemed was very soft spoken and cautious like Priscilla, but I think she has a lot of potential, and Jonathan is a great teacher.
remy242
OK, who at ABC hates Karina so much? She definitely has not been given many partners that have innate dance potential. I love SW and I enjoyed watching him because he was clearly having a blast but I'm tired of Derek, Mark and Cheryl getting partners with more natural potential.
MontyFan
Melissa the ringer. She was a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader and has extensive dance training.

Thank you for blowing her cover early, Nutbucket. I could hardly hear the music for the clanging in my head. Len was all over her previous training also.
yruneh
Melissa the ringer. She was a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader and has extensive dance training. It's a good choice for a last minute replacement, since she already can dance, but it goes against the purpose of the show, IMO.

Stacy Keibler was a Baltimore Ravens cheerleader with dance experience, so it's not an unprecedented level of experience.
dc chick
I already LOVE this season. I seriously enjoyed every single performance, albeit for vastly different reasons.

Favorite dances: Lil Kim (who knew?), GILLES!!!, Shawn, and Melissa

Favorite personalities: Steve O, The Woz, and Ty.

I loved Ty's "It's kinda like the rodeo - you're never quite ready and then it's just your turn" or whatever the line was. I thought he was endearing.

As of now, I'm calling Belinda or Lawrence as the first boot. I don't know what they're planning for next week, but hopefully something good.

I think this season's going to be fun!

Oh, and lastly, when did Mark get hot? Seriously, scruffy Mark was yummy.
Georgiana
Loved Gilles and Shawn. I thought that Holly was better than I ever expected her to be. Certainly better than horrible Denise Richards!!! I was prepared to hate Lil' Kim, but she looked nice and I hope she stays around a while. Belinda was pretty blah. Melissa is obviously a very good dancer, but she's not a star and doesn't belong on the show, IMO. Everyone else, I 'll just have to wait till next week for a better opinion.
teevee
Favorite dances: Lil Kim (who knew?), GILLES!!!, Shawn, and Melissa

Favorite personalities: Steve O, The Woz, and Ty.

I agree with these choices. Minus Lil Kim because I missed the first ten minutes. I think Holly might be the first to go if she does not do well next week. Ty, Belinda, and Steve are possibilities.
harvestbasket
tip, No, I saw Shawn stumble down the staircase and did not want to see another injury! She was terrific as I anticipated, but when she first came down the stairs, I thought Sabrina. While I can see the scores as a way to prevent backlash, I did enjoy Gilles' performance more and thought he deserved the number one spot. I still think Shawn will face backlash, but if the various polls are any indication, she is still an overwhelming favorite. Her dancing was good though I did see the gymnast arms Bruno and Len mentioned. I thought Derek's intro was fun, but when Mark made a comment, I rolled my eyes. Clearly scripted. I hope the show is not setting up some lame story. Not enough with siblings, engaged couples, last minute replacements competing against each other. Now "brothers"/bromance competition too?

Go away, Samantha.
Needs to be said again. While Tom is win. His ET comment alone made the two hours bearable.

I thought of the women, Melissa, Shawn and Lil' Kim were the best. Despite being a performer, she was clearly nervous. She looked a lot looser doing the same moves in rehearsal clips. After that, huge dip for the women in terms of dance. I did not think the rest of the women were that great. Denise looked awful and I assumed she would cry first, but week 1?! Her saying "sorry" grated and I only heard it for like 30 seconds. She then said "sorry" after the judges' comments.

Poor Dmitry! His choreography is terrific and I just kept thinking how great it would have been if Jewel danced it.

Of the men, DAG and Gilles were my favorite. Actually, Gilles was my favorite performance of the night. Loved Cheryl's choreography and love Gilles. He reminds me of Brooke and Apolo in having raw skills. Woz is so charming and really hope he sticks around.

I liked the new set up and liked the return of the tables to the ballroom. I spotted Brooke, Marlee, Maurice and Shannon in the audience.

Len and Bruno seemed to have a Freaky Friday moment tonight and CA continues to be useless. Lift police returns in week 1 and crying after Shawn's first dance? It was sweet, but nothing emotional IMO. Also she talked down to Shawn which is what I feared. Ugh.
spanana
I had the same thought about Belinda and Priscilla. Yeesh. It's also not boding well that I completely forgot about some of these stars until mentioned here. LT? Meh. He wasn't horrible.

I also have a feeling we are going to get to watch Julianne and boytoy fight and then have a kissy make us session every week, whether staged or real. I don't know if it's fair to him, but I want to smack her. Please let this be the season the Julianne backlash begins. When she's bothering me more than Lacey, then we know we're in trouble.

I know Shawn is seen as the frontrunner a la Kristi, and I think she is if for no other reason than fanbase, but I can't help rooting for her. She's just that cute.
SanLynn
Wow, is this the season with the most awkward dancers or what? I can't wait to see how these people improve over the next few weeks. Tonight I thought most of them just looked scared.

Shawn was great and considering her gymnastic style was power and not so much grace she pulled off a really elegant dance.

David Alan Grier is also going to be a favorite, as is Gilles.

And Melissa? Famewhore or no famewhore, much love to you girl. you may become a ringer as the competition goes on but that dance with only 48 hours of practice was fan.tas.tic. And she and Tony look good together.

I bet she is damn sick of that Bachelor clip replaying over and damn over.

Shawn FTW with Gilles second... although I'm sure I'll be wrong once fanbases come into play.
Fabrisse
I liked Steve Wozniak.

Did Denise Richards remind anyone else of a less confident Lisa Rinna? I didn't think that was possible.

Gilles was good. I missed Belinda Carlisle.
spanana
I realize we have another week of dancing before elimination, so scores can radically change--for instance, who knows whether Gilles will be any good at ballroom and vice versa for Shawn. But it's also that much harder to predict who is going home with the dance off twist. I don't want the first elimination to be Woz, just because he's that adorable, but I fear if he's in the B2 the judges will send him home no matter who he is up against.
IvyDarling
This is my first time ever watching this show. And, I'm only watching until Lil Kim is kicked off. I thought she rocked it tonight, despite her nerves. Once she gets more comfortable, I totally expect the Queen Bee to really shine.

I enjoyed Gilles and Shawn too!
Trojangirldance
I don't like Lil' Kim and think they scored her way too high. She needs to lay off the plastic surgery too, she is getting into the Jackson family (Michael and LaToya) territory of freaky looking. Also Holly Madison has had some more surgery around her eyes as well.

I hope Steve-O lasts awhile. He is sort of like Mark from SYTYCD, they need to give him some Tim Burton type style, he seems to quirky for straight-laced.

Other than that I really don't care this year. I don't like Julianne Hough, never heard of her boyfriend, never heard of most of the "stars" and the ones I had heard of (Denise Richards, Holly Madison, Jewel, Lil Kim) I don't like. I'm tired of Cheryl and Derek as well.
missbianca
Melissa was pretty impressive, dance training or no dance training, seeing as how she only had 48 hours to learn the routine!

I thought that Holly whoever was awful, and that stupid little giggle she kept doing was so annoying. It's like she had nothing occupying her brain but air. Possibly too much peroxide.

Of course there isn't. Joel McHale can attest to that! (man I cannot WAIT for The Soup this Friday!)

Lil' Kim...was great! So was Steve-O! Biggest surprise of the night!

The Woz...good attitude. but I think he's the first one to go. :(
lily220
Cheryl: You need to look like a man!
Gilles: Are you telling me that I don't?

priceless, also did anyone catch Gilles' naughty comment?
Sam: How hard was it really getting a sexy dance out of Gilles?
Cheryl: Look at him it's not that hard
Gilles: it's hard, trust me!
mtlchickie
Nutty personalities! Egos being checked! Edyta's leg warmers! Oh show. Why is it so hard to break up with you?

"I'm dedicating this dance to my girls in the Federal Detention Center." Well, that's different.

No major comments other than 1) Gilles, you got yourself a fanbase tonight with that number and 2) Bruno really needs to be strapped down. The amount of times he was going to smack Len in the head was almost mindboggling.

Of course the best part was everyone booing of "the biggest tool in America."
MerBear
Shawn reminds me of that Cheetah Girl, who was also paired with Mark Ballas.

Gilles is good. Hope he has enough of a fan base.

Julianne needs to tone down the "cute". I have always been a huge fan of hers, but she annoyed me tonight. Her boyfriend is handsome.

Belinda does not look good. She was sooooo darling when she was with the Go-Gos. As others have said, she could be Priscilla Presley's sister.

Love, love, love David Allen Grier. Hope he stays around. I think he's one of the funniest men on the planet.
Binky29
I. HATE. "Steve-O". We're talking fiery nuns, flames on the side of my face, haaaaate. Ooh, I've got an idea for a stupid stunt you could pull, Steve! How 'bout this time, you staple your nutsack to your upper lip? That way, you won't be able to open your stupid mouth, and have those stupid words come out in your stupid voice. (Yay, he went to rehab. Who in Hollywood hasn't?) I thought his dance was awful and he was overscored.

This could be the most boring episode of this show I've ever seen. I liked DAG, and Shawn because she's a hometown girl, but I'm not sure I'll watch this season.
loveisthedrug
After tonight, I'm convinced the reason my Lacey hatred ran so deep last season is because of Lance. I actually liked her tonight and enjoyed the waltz she choreographed. And good on Steve-O for giving it his best shot.

Dmitry is HOTNESS. I don't even remember how Holly did because I was fixated on him the whole time. I think this is one SYTYCD addition that I can fully get behind right from the start. Speaking of SYTYCD...

Interesting how Chelsie just straight up came out with the fact that she's from SYTYCD, considering the whole rival networks thing. As far as her dancing goes, there's something about her style that I just can't warm up to. Maybe she'll change my mind with the standard dances. Ty is a cutie for sure, but he's not going to make it very far, IMO.

I give Chuck and Julianne one week to get all the kissy kissy, lovey dovey out of their system. This was that one week. Otherwise, I will do my best to figure out a way to take votes away from them. And I'm a fan of theirs. It's just...too much PDA. Their waltz was pretty good, but Julianne's choreography was just too hectic. If she had toned it down a bit, I think he could have done much better. But Chuck's showing good potential. I hope he sticks around for a bit.

Gilles and Cheryl were great. But I feel like they're bashing me over the head with how sexy he is. I'm not saying he's not, but just stop telling me he is.

Oh, DAG. He kind of came off as an a-hole in this first episode, so I hope he gets a better edit next week. His dancing definitely has potential, though his bum sticking out was distracting. Can't wait to see him salsa next week.

Shawn! Love her. I want to carry her around in my pocket. I bet Carrie Ann's comments about her being graceful and elegant were the first she's ever heard of the sort. It's going to be interesting to see her dance Latin.

I knew nothing of the jilted Bachelor chick going in to tonight's show, but she seems like a sweetheart and I thought she did a fantastic job. I'm just waiting for the moment when enough time has passed and the cries of "ringer!" emerge. But I like her and it seems like she and Tony have a great chemistry together.

Denise is this season's Shannon Elizabeth for sure. I'm tired of her already.

Can't remember anyone else.

Where was the pro number? I guess they'll do it during the first results show (I hope!).
thethinman
OK, who at ABC hates Karina so much? She definitely has not been given many partners that have innate dance potential. I love SW and I enjoyed watching him because he was clearly having a blast but I'm tired of Derek, Mark and Cheryl getting partners with more natural potential.

I felt like yelling at the screen, 'Hey Karina, take a hint, they are never going to let you win this thing.' But the money is good and the exposure is even better than when she was world class with Slavik. But at least we got a taste of how good she is when she was paired with Mario Lopez.
Shawn definitely has a gymnast's body. I don't know if her compact form translates well for ballroom.
Christina07
I'm sorry, but throughout Denise Richards' dance, I was thinking of her "talent" routine in Drop Dead Gorgeous -- so, so wrong and utterly hilarious. I will completely lose it if she ever has to dance to "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You."

I'm glad it wasn't just me. I could not stop laughing.

Love all the SYTYCD people. Too bad Chelsie has such a crap partner because she is adorable.

Shawn was as great as I thought she would be (gotta love my hometown girl), Gilles was surprisingly really good and so was Melissa. Now that I know she had prior dance training I can see it, but she still did great with only 2 days to learn the routine. Never watched the Bachelor, but I saw her on Ellen and she was adorable and she was tonight, too. I was also pleasantly surprised by Lil Kim.

As of tonight my predictions for the final 3 are Shawn, Gilles and Melissa.
FashionVictim19
It's so hard to pinpoint who I liked! There were people I loved for their dancing ability and there were people I loved for their personality and efforts.

Dance-wise: Lil' Kim, David Alan Grier, Melissa, Gilles & Shawn
I thought Lil' Kim had TONS of rhythm and over time will learn more of the graceful steps. I think she'll do great as the weeks go on, you can tell she wants to do well. DAG was surprisingly graceful and I was surprised the judges were so hard on him, I thought he did a great job! Melissa, Gilles & Shawn were all excellent and definitely my tops picks of the night. Especially Melissa, who I dislike, only having two days - regardless of having previous training or not - that's still a hard thing to do.

Personality-wise: Steve-O, Woz, Ty, Lawrence & Holly
I looooved Steve-O & Woz. Their performances had me laughing and kept me entertained...and they weren't that terrible! But their personalities definitely made up for some messed up steps here and there. I'm rooting for both of them. Ty also surprised me, he seemed so stiff in the videos but loosened up a bit on stage and I really found myself wanting him to do well. Same with Lawrence (because I'm a HUGE Giants fan!) and Holly, who I love from Girls Next Door. I thought she did a great job with only a few days to learn and I think she's really grateful to be there.

My picks to go: Chuck, Belinda or Denise
I'm not a Julianne fan anyway so her and Chuck don't impress me. I felt the judges were a little overly nice to them since they apparently think Julianne can do no wrong. HATE. Denise was very stiff and I agree with whoever said it seemed that they were being extra nice to her. She cried in the FIRST episode! Seriously? And Belinda was very bland and I actually forgot she performed as I was making my list...I don't think that bodes well for her chances.
Nutbucket
The Woz...good attitude. but I think he's the first one to go. :(

Maybe he will benefit from the Steve Guttenberg effect. Steve stayed longer than he probably should have because of his great attitude.
wildginger
Shawn reminds me of that Cheetah Girl, who was also paired with Mark Ballas.

Yes! That's who she reminded me of - maybe because they have a similar body type? I prefer Shawn's personality though (thus far, at least).
londonfroglet
I loved Ty's "It's kinda like the rodeo - you're never quite ready and then it's just your turn" or whatever the line was. I thought he was endearing.

Loved this big time. Boy, there is some work to be done there.
masked_spangler
I don't think L'il Kim dedicating her performance to her fellow jailbirds will win over the at-home people.

Hated Chelsie the new girl. "Yes, I think I *can* dance!" Gag. I also think she has the same problem Lacey did last year, showing off too much and not understanding that this actually isn't about how well she dances.

Gilles is totally this season's Helio. Half the viewers have never heard of him, but he has a good partner, decent moves and a sexy accent. He'll go far unless he screws it up.
