I'm addicted to this show and would be interested to hear if there's any other fans out there. It's an Australian soap that was (unusually) commissioned by the BBC to fill the gap left by Neighbours after it was lost to Five. Sadly, they didn't have much faith in it and I'm not sure if there'll be any more episodes - the whole 130-episode first series has aired on the BBC, but I've heard there's still quite a way to go on Network Ten in Australia, and repeats airing on Fiver here in the UK.

I came into the show as a big fan of Neighbours and I thought it would be nowhere near as good, but after a month or so I was hooked and I now think it's so much better. I love the grown-up feel to the show and the many twists and turns.

I'm surprised that it hasn't been promoted much or received much recognition, given its quality. I think it's just hard for a new soap to establish itself in a competitive market, especially when there doesn't seem to be much faith behind it.

I'm so glad someone started a thread for this. I was going to start one myself when it first aired, but thought against it because of poor ratings. I absolutely loved Out of the Blue and hope there's a chance that it can be given a lifeline now it's on Fiver with the other Australian soaps and generating more of a fanbase hopefully. I think where the BBC went wrong with this show was that it kept moving it in the schedules and it was really hard to keep track of when and where it was. And then there was a frustrating lack of episodes when there was sport on BBC2. I also think that a tea-time slot would've helped, like with Neighbours when it first started. Plus it takes a while to build up a solid fanbase and get into a new show, particularly a soap and it was never given a chance to get that fanbase.

I didn't intentionally set out to get addicted to another soap though, but the mystery really hooked me from the off and I loved it ever since. I liked though in the series finale they did leave the door open for a return.

I agree that there was great writing in the show (for a soap) and there were some great twists along the way. Plus, for a while the McManus' were my favourite soap family (well except for insipid Tess, but I don't count her) of 2008.

Yeah I pretty much agree with all of that. I think it's especially important to give a soap time to settle in, because the viewer obviously needs to be convinced that the characters are going to be worth watching every day. The BBC made the decision to shift the show to BBC Two after just a week, so I think that just sent out the message that it wasn't worth watching, which definitely wasn't the case, at least for me!

I think the other major issue with soaps is that it's a big commitment to start watching a new one. I almost didn't bother with Out of the Blue because I wasn't sure if I wanted to set aside the time to watch it every day. For that reason, you need to give viewers a reason to tune in rather than an excuse to tune out, which is where the BBC went wrong.

I should probably confess at this point that I'm watching the repeats on Fiver, even though I know what happens! I don't think I'm ready to let go of the show yet, haha!

I would watch the repeats, but I don't have Fiver. And I've seen most of it twice. I watched on RTE (world premiere, oh yeah) and on BBC2 when I could. As you can imagine there is a huge void now it's over, even though I try to convince myself it'll be back after a hiatus. Even though it's looking more and more unlikely after I read (on wiki, so take with a grain of salt as always) that Network Ten are also constantly changing the timeslot in Australia and it's not doing as well in the ratings as a result. Plus, it seems Home and Away is a sanctuary for ex- Out of the Blue stars. The actor who plays Daniel works on a boat with Aden and Peta's brother is also there still being self-righteous.

I was wondering, if I should spoiler tag plot details or not in my post, because I'm dying to talk about my love for Deborah and any door scenes when she gives someone a verbal smackdown, what a great anti-hero Daniel is, and how inexplicable it is whenever Addo gets a hot girl, what a great relationship Peta and Poppy had and just Tracey in general because there is so much to discuss.
