Double NAY.
On one hand it could give more ample room to fix the mess they made with the Daily Planet and Chlark (with a competent writing team that is), on the other hand considering the writing staff we have, the contrived WTF lightswitches this year, and the character assassinations left and right it'll more than likely just end up as more ammunition to degrade Chloe for the sake of pimping the crap out of her idiot of a cousin aka Supershoe. Too bad I'll never know.
Eh...after eight years I think I've finally digested enough crap.

I voted Meh, but the reasoning is the same. The lightswitches, contrived stories, lack of respect for their own show's canon & character integrity has been ridiculous this season, but the worst aspect is ED's Nois' botox betty, "dog in heat" routine.

Out of curiosity, how long did 7th Heaven and Charmed last on the WB?
7th Heaven lasted 10 years on WB and 1 additional season on the CW. Those final years, the show entered into a realm beyond goodness or badness where conventional standards of morality and quality (in every sense of the world) and human behavior no longer applied. As bad and as questionable as
Smallville has gotten, it's never come close to what
7th Heaven was. Only
Secret Life, from the same creator, has come close.

Seriously. FML.
This season has featured some of the WORST episodes in the entire run of the season. The arc has been weak. Not to mention, how can you have an enemy bigger than Doomsday? Even if they drag him into next year, won't he be fully transformed by that point? And if you don't have Sam, what's the point?
Every character has been ruined this season. Chloe? She's a step beyond Pod!Chloe. She's Possessed!DoomsdayFeeding!Chloe. Lois? A desperate hot mess. Clark? Let's turn the dial from just plain whiny to ANGST!INCONSISTENCY. Oliver? Douche-y and extraneous. The only good characters are Dooms and Tess, and unless Tess unleashes her evil army of meteor freaks, I'm not going to like her that much either.
Please, TPTB, tell me how you plan to write next season. Tell me a smattering of what you have planned. Because after this season, it could only be more crap that serves to dishonor the mythos of Superman and the glory that was the early years of the show.

"FML"?
I heard there's a date set up for a Spider-Man musical. How about one for this show on Broadway? Smallville: Somebody Save Us! . . . featuring a fifteen-minute solo from Lex Luthor, surrounded by lookalikes dressed as the Village People. Can't be any more idiotic then where this show has gone.
ETA: And "The Pancake Song." We can't forget that classic number.

Despite ending my dedicated viewership at S5 (watched a few S6 eps), I still sporadically follow the SV online fandom. Hell, I put almost 6 years (and 5 dvd purchases) of my life into this show. However, the show has long since passed it's prime. I did tune in to some eps with Doomsday, and I have enjoyed Sam Witwer's depiction but it's blatantly obvious that his *full* transformation was being delayed. Now, in addition to the new improved douchier but still developmentally challenged Clark, we'll have to contend with retrogressive Davis Bloome and his not even half as awesome or deserving Harlequin Chloe? While she's still married to that gimpy photo-taking bowtie? And Lois is being more emo and desperate and like S2!Clark obsessing over Lana only less likeable because she's supposed to be ICONIC? That's not a new season; that's a clip show on loop. I've had my fill, I think. Good day, show. I say, "Good day!"
BTW, no one can convince me that there is/was a plan. Maybe AlMiles had one - maybe. But that was a dream deferred. These yuckles (whoever remains) story mapped nothing. You can't reheat 3 year old bologna and expect it not to still be palatable. Projectile vomiting will ensue.

My sentiments exactly,
Elly. IMO, Season 9 could be an opportunity for TPTB to tie up all the major plotlines and relationships that they've left dangling, such as the unresolved Clana (Clark *has* to be the one to end it), the Luthor-controlled DP, and Chlark. OTOH, it could also be just another excuse to shove phony Clois at us. I'll be very interested in the cast announcement for S9: If ED's upped to 22, I'm out for sure; if she's at about the same episode number, I might follow spoilers without watching; and if she's not in it at all, I'm back as a full-time watcher. :)

Lois Lane has never been an important element to this show, in my honest opinion. This is in part, one of the reason why Lois is so uneveningly written. I honestly do hope the ED's cut loose from this dying show--as they never seem to do anything with Lois anyway. The writers are not fussed to write Lois in an epic manner.
That said, I've already accepted the fact the ED probably will be back, although, her presense on this show doesn't factor in my decision of to watch or not to watch. A full contract or not, they write Lois to be dumb and moronic. I don't need anymore episodes to foster my dislike for the character--but maybe others do.
Just trying to look at the plus side of things.

Just call me Jason and give me a hockey mask, that's about as close to a happy camper as I could manage in those circumstances.
I do agree though that the next indicator of how hellish next season ( I wail as I write next season) will be shall be based on ED's contract. If she gets upped to full time I think I will have actually found my breaking point. If she's kept to part time, well, that might be slightly encouraging.

Thank you! So much word to that entire paragraph. Here's what's really sad for me. My two teen daughters somehow started watching an Australian kids' show called H2O about 3 girls that become mermaids. They of course had to pull me in to watch with them and danged if it wasn't an ok show. Nothing epic mind you, just silly stuff. But here's the thing. The show actually had story mapping. This kid's show from Australia was better mapped than a prime-time show from the States! It actually had freakin' character progression and payoff!!! Mindboggling, I know.
I just hate this news about another season. In all seriousness, and of course YMMV, I can't think of any show I've ever watched that did a worse job at story mapping or follow up. Season 9 holds no enticement for me unless ED is gone, and even then I'd have to see evidence that they were restoring Clark and Chloe to some semblance of their Season 5 selves. Anything less than that... Forget it.

I voted Nay. If they can't make Clark into Superman in eight seasons, what makes me think they can in nine?
How come Smallville gets nine seasons and shows like Firefly get just 14 episodes? There is definitely something wrong with the universe ...
I've totally been thinking that same kind of thought for a while. How do shows like Arrested Development or Veronica Mars get an early cancellation and yet, Smallville (which is considerably more terrible and has been dying for years) continually gets renewed and almost has as many seasons as Friends or M.A.S.H.? FRIENDS and M.A.S.H., people. We think that Smallville won't get 10 or 11 seasons...but, then how many of us thought it would get 9?
Smallville is not the new Saturday Night Live. It shouldn't be made into this show that can live forever.
It irks me, but unfortunately, it comes down to business and making money over creativity and storytelling. I wish it would change, but that's the attitude that goes on.
So we finally got definitive proof: There is no God.
I disagree. I think this just reinforces the very real evidence of
evil in the world. Not that God doesn't exist, but that there is a reason we need Him. :)
Maybe AlMiles had one - maybe.
I'm willing to bet that their plan was to go out in S7 because that's the way that season was written. They knew their contract would be out after the year and they probably wanted to go out with the show they started. It only makes sense. But, the sad state of affairs is that they had people above them that had more pull to stretch it out and get rid of them in the process.
It's a shame because I think those same people won out again.

There wasn't a "hell no!" option or I would've selected that. I'm so in the
nay; especially because there
are still some good stories to tell - I've read enough good fanfic to know that; I'm just so leary about TPTB and their overall objectives and I just don't think I can put up with more contrived ICONIC cnois shoved at me, another bout of Clana-go-round (even though it needs to happen for Clark to for realz end it), Pod!Chloe trying to do everything that she's just not (meaning, she should be back in the DP reporting and not freaking married to JO, trying to councle MF...), Clark bouncing between being Super, a jiggalo and pwhipped over Lana, the uneccessary stalling, character assasination and the blasted shipper bones that are constantly thrown out there. Oy vey
I'll be very interested in the cast announcement for S9: If ED's upped to 22, I'm out for sure; if she's at about the same episode number, I might follow spoilers without watching; and if she's not in it at all, I'm back as a full-time watcher. :)
Yea, I don't know if I can deal with Miss Neener Neener for 22 episodes and even if she's still at the same number, she's still shoved out there with the countless interviews of bs and from the promo monkeys and just...gah! Even at the 12/13 episodes, assuming S9 would be the last, I can only imagine the extensive ICOINC crap shoved where it dosen't need to be - it was bad enough this season, oh hell, I can't imagaine how much more it would be in the last season.
I voted Nay! But if they quit with the lightswitches and the absurd contrived stories, and get rid of ED and give us Chlark, I'll happily change my vote to Yay!
IA, TPTB need to be smart in the writing and tell a good story; which means no lightswitches or contrived stories where characters are shoehorned "just because" or assasinated because it's time to throw another bone. I'm so tired of the back peddling and stalling

Nay Nay Nay!!! CW you dumba***, another year of crapfest, in what universe do you give people like PS3 another year of fillers, how can you guys be so stupid and mean with no regards to the pains you afflict on people like me, may Zod never forgive you!!
I have already wasted 8 years of my life on this crap show where everything remotely interesting happens on offscreenville. Now I have another year of fantastic crap to look forward to, all in the name of Chloe Sullivan and Chlois, buzz off PS3 (Chloe included), buzz off Superman; you've no where in sight anyway. Enough is f*fing enough, I swear if ED is going to be the Iconiness of all Icons in S9,...Arrrgh *frustration growl* that will be the day....
OK now, since its a done deal and all, I guess I need to have a bit of hope. Hopefully we can finally get some Chlark and Real!Chloe. Dooms can continue to be the awesome murderer that he is! While Mercy can grow some spine and declare her unwavering devotion to Lex. It will be better for all of us (PS3 and me included) if ED stay far away from my screen, anymore of her, I'd definitely lost it. I've never not like an actress in a role so much. Don't get me wrong people, I do like her as a person or in other roles, I mean I watched The Butterfly Effect 2 because of her (although that was 2-3 years again, and my frustration with her eyes on pining and empty suit loving might have killed any desire to ever watch her movie again, I still like her as a person) but on smallville, the girl has got to go!!!!
Meab
Feb 25, 2009 @ 10:20 am
After reading different reactions last night after the news broke, I have to go NAY as well. The tipping point for that however, is ED and Nois being shoved off the show. It's long overdue and she adds nothing worthwhile to the cast, besides T&A, which another actress can do for cheaper.
And I can't think of anything better to get Chloe involved in Journalism again, especially if the death involved Tess and her minions.
but on smallville, the girl has got to go!!!!
Amen. Enough is enough. Just commit to Chlois and Clark and an actual end point for them and work towards it the entire season instead of being money-grubbing asses who wait until the last 5 or 10 episodes to effectively conclude what will be a
9 year series.
I'm so tired of the back peddling and stalling
IA. Nothing makes me loathe a season 9 more (not to mention starting a list of episodes to avoid) more than the thought of backpedalling and stalling. Everyone is tired of it, IMO, and the writers aren't creative enough to keep on doing it for another season. It's like they're aren't even bothering to try this season, so I don't see why the audience should bother to tune in next season if the status quo, along with an MO we can see coming a mile away, is all we have to look forward to.

I try to imagine a cool S9 and I can't.
First,
like Angel Cohn, I'd want Nois gone.
Benjamin Porter's comments about the complete lack of chemistry btw ED and TW making Cnois scenes tedious nicely expressed my position. Porter compared them to oil and water, although I agree more with
Omar's comparison of Cnois to the repulsive idea of tuna fish and chocolate syrup. I find them intolerable. Second, the forever Knight crap with Dark Ollie and Dark Chloe is too bleak. Chloe needs to get back to journalism and Ollie needs to regain a conscience. I don't like the guy, but I agree with Les Moonves that
Americans don't like dark tv or at least mainstream American audiences have a limited tolerance for dark and Season 8 is going to be pitch black by the end. They couldn't keep this up for another season. They need to build them up again and to me, that means getting Chloe back on her journalism path and being Season 5 fabulous reporter!Chloe on a mission again. Third, I'd want Alaina Huffman/Black Canary to be a real part of S9. At least 7-10 episodes. It'd be so good to have a SMART, undamaged, not evil, competent, independent, confident female character in the story again. Someone to breeze in, be fabulous, kick ass and simply be likeable. Plus, Ollie is such a jerk, he could really use Dinah to help foster a redemption storyline for him and establish his potential again since AH and JH had nice chemistry. Unfortunately, she's signed as a regular for Stargate Universe. I guess it's possible she could be part of SV since both shows are filmed in Vancouver, but since she has a family it's unlikely she'd have time to hold down two jobs even if she was interested in the work and of course someone else snatched her up seeing how good she is. Fourth, Lana would need to come back so Clark could reject her and also so Chloe could realize what a bad friend Lana truly has been to her. And Fever, Delete, Labryinth, Tempest and Promise would get some payoff. Fifth, Michael Rosenbaum would have to come back and they'd only use Lex's voice if they could get MR to do it, otherwise, Lex wouldn't be heard.
Considering how unlikely it is that they'll do the above, I voted NAY! They'll just mess this up and a year from now there will be talk of Season 10, not bc the season is great but bc the CW will still be in lousy shape having failed to launch a hit.

I voted NAY. After not watching half the episodes and watching most of the ones I did see on repeat showing (so I knew what I was getting), I certainly won't be watching S9 live. I'm happily entertained with this forum and its people and will continue to follow the show from that standpoint, but the wreck of this season - which in competent hands would have been plotted out and led to "development and progression" for the characters as well as having the possibility to wrap up some of the dangling issues - has convinced me that TIIC have no idea how to do that and probably won't be learning over the summer.
