It doesn't look like there's a thread for this yet, so I'm starting one.
I liked the special, and the promos on Comedy Central look amusing. I'm sort of sad that Comedy Central isn't showing this on Sunday night, so then I could pair it with Flight of the Conchords.
Someone on the TDS thread posted a link to
this NY Magazine story. The dolphin joke made me cry laughing as I was reading it, so I'm hopeful.

I'm also looking forward to this series. I was immediately sold when I read that they'd be dedicating an entire episode to chairs. I liked most of that NY Magazine story, even if after thinking about it for ten minutes, I still can't understand that drummer joke.

This show premieres tonight on Comedy Central, and it's gotten great publicity so far. Lots of commercials, cover of New York magazine, Jon Stewart mention, plus Comedy Central has been showing the "Demetri Martin. Person." special to get the world used to his style.
I went to one of the show tapings a few months ago. The program is a mix of stand-up and pre-taped skits, aired before a live audience. They were still working out a lot of the kinks, but it was pretty funny. Then again, I root for all Daily Show alums :-)

Yes, if someone can explain the drummer joke, I would appreciate it, because I didn't get it either.

Drummers are cool. Drum circles (the hippie kind) are not. (There was a South Park episode where Cartman had to get rid of them.)

Fresh Air did a repeat of an interview Terri Gross had with him last year and he was absolutely hysterical. All his jokes make me smile.

I thought his special was sublime. The first installment of the series was good, but somehow not great. I am looking forward to the other six installments, either way.
I don't know why the music + line drawings at the end was so funny, but it just was. Somehow, the combination cracked me up, and I wish I understood the reason. Most of his humor is like that; it strikes me as incredibly funny but I don't know why.

I really like parts of it, but it sorted of veered all over the place in terms of tone and volume, so it was a little hard to get into a groove. I actually liked some of the skits a lot more than I thought I would (the time traveller with his bag of potatoes was just goofy funny for me, and I liked the shortness of the guys in the dungeon.) But lots of the skits didn't work at all for me.
Loved the graphs and illustrations. I want a "Polka Dots, side view" t-shirt.

I'll definitely watch again. I loved "Person" and there was a lot of that flavor in this. Obviously, some of the kinks still need to be worked out, but I think it has a lot of potential.
Demetri basically seems like he'd be a lot of fun to hang out with.

The dungeon guys is going to be a regular quick skit, I think. (I attended the taping of the "Power" episode, which airs next week, and we watched a few of the dungeon videos.)

I was kind of bothered by Martin smiling during the standup segments. I don't recall him smiling at all during "Person." It seems insignificant, but his jokes require a super-deadpan style, and smiling just kind of ruins it for me. However, I liked the show enough, so I'll definitely keep watching.
Also,
viewership for the premiere was great, so a renewal announcement should be coming soon.

Martin is so likable, and I did chuckle a few times. I laughed more during his Person special, but I'll definitely continue to watch.
I loved the guy who was early for the rave, and his hairdo in that bit especially.

I like both of Demitri Martin's specials. And I've enjoyed every article I've read about him and his weird habits. (Like making haikus from words on a beer bottle, or learning to write with both hands at once.) But the first episode was pretty weak. It wasn't terrible, but it didn't hang together. And the laugh track was way too loud. I hope it will get better.

Demitri's demeanor on this show, during the stand-up segments is definitely different than in his specials or his segments on the Daily Show.
But no matter, I like him either way. I actually kind of like it when after a pause he laughs at his own joke.

That was my favourite part of the show! :D I couldn't stop giggling through that whole segment.
I really liked the show - I think it managed to capture what I think of as Demetri's brand of humour, and I just love physically, the way it all looked.
What I didn't like was the laughing track. Yeah, I know, there's an actual audience and everything, so it's not like it's completely canned laughter - but nonetheless, they irk me.

During the final part, could anyone make out what the second-to-last page said? It was between "I'm just having a little trouble coordinating right now" and "The end," but we never got a close-up. All I could make out was "____ ___ I?", and I'm not even sure of that.

Double posting, because we've had a new episode and two days have passed and I think (hope?) that'll make it okay.
The "power" episode was... not that good. The "angry drivers" and "yellow belt" sketches fell pretty flat, and nothing else felt very memorable. The only thing I can really say I liked was the coffee/lines bit, and I saw that in the previews enough that I don't really feel like I even needed to see the episode.
Hope #3 gets a little better.

I liked "Power" more than "Timing." I loved it, actually. I have a friend with Lyme disease so the "tick terrorism" was especially funny to me. But I thought the episode was hilarious from start to finish, really.

I actually couldn't stop laughing during the Yellow Belt Opens a New Pair of Earphones. I hate those f-ing packages. Even with scissors your hands are totally crippled.
The only thing I don't like is when the laugh track over-laughs. Most of DM's jokes are chucklers IMO, so hearing the over-laugh track makes me feel like I'm watching the show next to a tool.

I liked this ep a little better than last week's. I thought the line about not having any superpowers except being invisible to bartenders was really funny. Overall, the sketches are entertaining but not laugh out loud funny- I did laugh several times during me vs. you though. "Me police... you campus police." Ha!

The sketches in "Power" were awful. "Me vs. You" was great. It looks like Demitri Martin's style doesn't translate well to TV. He's funny when he does the same things as he did on his standup specials, but terrible at sketch comedy.

I liked the fight over the parking space. In New York City, there AREN'T a lot of other spaces you can use, and there are a lot of metrosexual-types around who attempt to act tougher than they are, so it worked for me.

My husband and I laughed throughout the parking spot sketch. The little pop ups, "He has no idea what he will do when he reaches 3" or " He pooped himself a little". Was too funny. Those guys acting so tough but being so afraid.

I really liked the segment with the words on cards. "I ate you." "A o."
The Creedicide bit was reminiscent of an SNL roach motel ad a few years back, but it still cracked me. Like the diamond ad, it got more funny the longer and more convoluted it got.
I've had a little crush on Demetri for awhile, but the video of him smashing the car headlights made him sort of hot in a whole new, alpha male way.

Totally agree. The not-so-deadpan delivery was rather jarring, and doesn't work as well as his normal style. I think the first couple episodes have been good and not great. But I think Demetri is really talented, so hopefully the show will improve.

I was at the taping of this episode, and FYI, the words-on-cards skit has been retaped since then, with the real audience reactions. During the taping, he had all the letters in a pile and it was taking way too long to form the sentences and make a punchline. Glad they found a way to fix it, though they still had to cut a lot from that segment - maybe there will be more throughout the other episodes.
Also: I, too, would appreciate knowing that my vermin were dying for something they believe in!

I think the show is getting better. I'm not sure if it's because the laugh track has been dialed back, or if it's that Demetri is less smiley/hammy and more like his normal stand-up self, but whatever it is I think they're finding their groove better.
Jokes I loved:
Improper Fraction and Really Improper Fraction (because I'm 12)
Graph of Thickness of Neck vs. Thickness of Books (I love almost all his graphs because I'm a nerd. This one reminded me of the cuteness of girl vs how interested I am in hearing how intuitive her cat is. Watching him deliver both graphs I'm like "Ok, I get it, but why does the function change?" and I'm nerdily anxious to hear the punchline for why it does).
"I would have taught you math... bitch"
I liked the Dolphin joke, but I also read that article so I was spoiled for it. It was still funny, but I wonder how much more I would have enjoyed it if I hadn't been spoiled.
Ahh Demetri.

I think the show as a whole is getting better. Everyone involved seems a bit more confident with the format, and Demetri's delivery is getting back to his normal standup style (although I don't mind the occasional genuine laugh, like at his drawing of a "lowercase-L sofa"). The sketches leave a bit to be desired, but I'm guessing they'll always be hit-or-miss. The gum sketch and the urinal sketch both seemed to drag on. I did find "Yellow belt tries to relax in a beach chair" hilarious, though.

Mar 5, 2009 @ 2:15 pm
The gum sketch did drag on, but as with some of the other sketches, it reached a point towards the end where it became so ridiculous that I re-engaged. (Probably at "Cult Treasurer.")
Plus, I've had have this bizarre crush on Jon Benjamin for 7-8 years, so I'll probably keep watching just to see him play Ben Franklin, or a passive agressive yuppie.

There were two parts that I'm still laughing over. In the Spring Haven retirement home sketch when they showed the pinata-related headlines, the first line of one of the "articles" was something along the lines of "Remarkably, the pinata found inside the dead retirement home resident contained yet another dead body". The other was during the John Oliver sketch when John pretended to eat the poisoned food and Demetri grinned idiotically and did that villainous tented fingers gesture.
It's funny, I didn't think the episode was great as a whole, but it probably had some of the funniest smaller things of the series so far.

I enjoyed the triple burn joke. Again, I feel like they've toned down the laugh track and made it more realistic to how audiences actually react, and this one was a good example in my opinion (right after his "and then if someone says something sassy to you?" line). Demetri's jokes are hardly ever "punchline immediately followed by uproarious laughter." Usually his punchlines are followed by a murmur that crescendos into laughter as everyone processes the joke and thinks "oh, haha, I get it."
I also liked the guy in a neck brace sketch. My favorite bits were checking out a girl, sneezing, and having a conversation with two friends (just watching his eyes go back and forth amused the crap out of me). I wonder if instead of the conversation, it might have been funnier to have him watch a tennis match. First turning his whole body and then resorting to just moving his eyes (so same deal), but then they pan out and he's the only motionless person in a sea of people turning their heads back and forth.

Last night's episode was an improvement, though I cringed at the "tiny guy at a country club" skit and thought that some of the jokes weren't game-related enough. But, it helped that the opening jokes about team names being more interesting than teams prompted a hearty guffaw out of me AND Mr. NicoleMN6 (who never gets Demetri Martin). And, I always chuckle at Da Mici.
ETA: I also heartily enjoyed BIRD PRANKS! Both as mocking "Punked!" type shows, but also because a bird shat on me this week. (That's a year of good luck, but still.)

I love the deep into ring debt ring. I also love the music that plays during that whole sketch.
I think my favourite sketch of the whole first series is the Devon Cottonfield Emotional Escape Artist. The silly gestures he makes with his hand remind me of Gob from
Arrested Development. Which is always a good thing.
