Instead of having to paste ratings in every soap thread, I thought we might have one thread to paste the ratings and discuss the ups and (mostly) downs of soap ratings.

Although I am THRILLED GH is down to 4th place and losing viewers, I can't understand how it's DOOL that is improving. Most of the viewers (at least here) can't stand how it's being written lately. My fear is this will only keep DHi employed even longer.

And despite the drop in ratings, I doubt Guza is going anywhere, which totally sucks.
steve91199
I don't get the DAYS rise either. Maybe it's Passions viewers? I know I almost wanted to see yummy Eric Marstolf, and I didn't even watch Passions very often.

I'm glad GL is going up, slightly. The show may be hollowed out, but I still don't want them to be canceled.

I'm not sure how to feel about OLTL. I don't want RC to go, but I hope this tells them people are sick of rape = love.

AMC deserves to sink.
DanaMB
Yeah, I'm bummed about OLTL's ratings. I wonder if the holidays interfered or if it's backlash from the "rapemance." Either way, I don't want to see RC go.
bpeck
I'm thinking alot of viewers are coming back to Day to see how they send off Roman and Marlena now that DH and DH have been sacked.

I think GH's numbers will go up next week, unfortunately, when this story that Won't.Change.Port.Charles.Forever starts. Although if it follows history, those numbers won't hold because the audience will once again be thoroughly disappointed.

Honestly, is CBS going to cancel the longest running soap in history? I think they'll hold onto it as long as possible.
DanaMB
The latest ratings from SON:

Although I hate to see poor writing rewarded, I still love that DOOL is keeping GH out of 3rd place. Then again, a lost of 400,000 viewers isn't exactly rewarding.

GH ranks near the bottom for all male viewers, yet doesn't Guza crow that he's writing a soap for men?
DanaMB
He's out of touch with all audiences. What an idiot.

I see ATWT is close to edging out GH for 4th. After tuning back in when I found out Nuke finally had sex and caught up on this week's eps, I really hope ATWT gains viewers and pushes GH into 5th. John Lindstrom (ex-Kevin, GH) is wonderful as Craig on that show.
AuntLori
There've been quite a few actors from GH that have done roles on ATWT in the past few years. Sarah Brown, Kin Shriner, Wally Kurth, Julie Pinson and now Jon Lindstrom.

I thought all men aspired to be a mini-mobster? What a shock! Or maybe not.

My gay male friends tend to watch ATWT (even before Nuke), AMC, OLTL, Y&R or B&B. My straight male friends (including my boyfriend) who watch soaps watch Y&R (and sometimes B&B). I don't know any men who watch GH.
steve91199
I'm sure Pratt watches GH. And weeps tears of joy and envy, all while figuring out who would win in a Zach/Sonny/Jason measuring contest.
tam1MI
I should point out here, not that it is needed, that DAYS is getting a ratings boost as people are tuning to see how Drake Hogestyn and Deidre Hall get sent off. I expect their ratings to decline after Hall & Hogestyn's last day, especially if the John/Marlena fans follow through on their threats to cease the watching the show after they are gone.
DanaMB
The latest ratings from SON.

I hate that GH gained viewers and OLTL is losing viewers. At least DOOL is still beating GH. Shows how much I hate GH if I'm rooting for a DHigley show.

Is it just me, or is ATWT in as much trouble as GL?
Morrigan8472
I don't know, ATWT seems pretty middle of the pack to me in most of the standings.

Stupid question: What does HH stand for?
peachmangosteen
Stupid question: What does HH stand for?
I don't know why, but I'm thinking households. Although, I don't really know what that means. I just don't get ratings.

The only soaps I'm currently watching are OLTL and ATWT. So, these ratings suck!
Black Knight
Yes, HH means Households. To explain using Y&R's as an example, 3.9/13, it means that 3.9% of all households were tuned into Y&R, and 13% of all households who had their TV on at the time Y&R airs were watching Y&R.

ATWT's probably a more expensive show to produce than GL is, yet their ratings in certain key demos - look at the female ones - are about the same. CBS plans to cut $150 billion in expenses this year, and frankly they already got all the low-hanging fruit in last year's budget cuts and layoffs, so it'll be interesting to see what gets cut this year. Sometimes a more popular program does get cut if it's also more expensive and the additional revenue from the higher ratings is not enough to offset the additional expense, which could be the case with ATWT. Especially given how badly advertising has fallen off in general...
peachmangosteen

Thank you! I never understood that.

You don't happen to want to explain the 'rating' thing to me (as in, Women 18-34 Rating), do you?
Black Knight
It's the same, peachmangosteen - just the demo is different (Women 18-34 rather than Households). You watch OLTL, so...
6. OLTL 0.8/4

The first number is the ratings, the second number the share. A "ratings point" is equal to one percent of the total number. 0.8/4 means that OLTL had .8% of all Women 18-34, or .8 of a ratings point. And of the Women 18-34 who were watching TV at the time OLTL is on, 4% of them had OLTL on. This is the "share" - 4% share of total.

I should mention that this is why the share can be more important than the ratings, sometimes. The share indicates whether a show is performing relative to the hour it's airing. For instance, noon is lunch hour, so the amount of TVs on and tuned to something is higher than during the other midday hours. ATWT/GL was brought up before, so let's look at the Household numbers for them:

5. ATWT 2.0/6
8. GL 1.6/5

Okay, so ATWT is .4 ratings point higher than GL...but GL is only 1% lower in share. This indicates to network honchos that ATWT's higher ratings might simply be due to airing in an hour that has more total listeners, not because it's truly outperforming GL.
DanaMB
Latest ratings from SON:

I'm wondering if DOOL's gains are due to the fact that it was John and Marlena's last week. It will be interesting to see if all the threats from their fans of never watching again impacts next week's ratings.

Heh.

It really hurts that GH is up there in the ratings, but maybe that's because of the Event That Changes Nothing! As repetitive and stupid as they are, the sweeps stunts are well promoted. Those are the shows that win them their (inexplicable) Emmys for best soap.
Caddy720
I think GH has found their niche. Most soaps fans aren't going to like the show, but it has found a tone, and I doubt it will change. Even though Y&R is more diverse in their story telling, they also have a tone that is very different from most soaps, and sticking with that tone and style is one of the reasons why the show is so successful.

GL was the only show to go up in household viewers. Supposedly they need a 1.8 to avoid cancellation. I don't know how true that is but 1.7 is still better than they've had in some time.
tam1MI
It's a sad comment on the state of soaps today that every soap but Y&R* is pulling lower ratings than ANOTHER WORLD was getting when NBC decided it was no longer viable to air. :(

* - And IIRC AW was pulling around a 3.9 when the plug was pulled.
steve91199
I think AW was in the high 2s when they canceled, but you're right, still higher than most soaps now.
AuntLori
I read somewhere that the demo's have improved since Jason/Liz stopped sharing scenes.

For GH, the 18-34 Demo has risen since December 29....grrrr

18-34 Demo

December 29 – January 2 4. GH 0.7/4 (-.1/-.3)

January 5 – 9 4 . GH 0.9/5 (+.2/-.1)

January 12-16 3. GH 1.1/6 (+.2/+.1)

January 19-23 2. GH 1.1/6 (same/-.1)

January 26-30 3. GH 1.0/6 (-.1/same)

February 2-6 1. GH 1.2/7 (+.2/+.1)

When did the disaster that changes nothing start? It'll be interesting to see if they can keep the increase into March sweeps or if the numbers will drop again when this current storyline is over.
AuntLori
The hospital crisis started the week of January 19th with the whole roll back in time 9 hours leading up to the surgery/release of the biotoxin on January 29th.

Saw a rumor elsewhere that March sweeps is featuring the quad of Spinelli/Winnie/Jason/Sam looking for AZ, Sonny and his harem, big push of Ethan/LuLu and Nik/Rebecca with LL2 playing the benign happy couple with no story (rarely seen except when needed to prop the NEm redux.) Oh and Scrubs working to wake Redrum from his coma.

Not a single thing I'll tune in to watch on SoapNet. I don't fall into the rising 18-34 demo age bracket so I guess I'm really out of touch with what the viewers want to see.

I fall into that bracket, but they haven't a clue what I want to see.....I don't watch GH because of Sonny. I hesitantly watch other things...I miss the good ole' days of soaps. And, what they could be...[take a look at DisneyChannel/Degrassi]

I'm glad that GL held steady. They have been getting a lot of good word of mouth, so hopefully that will help them.

AMC deserved those low ratings, in fact they should be lower. Instead of telling good character driven stories, they are relying on stunts, and misleading promotions. AMC really needs to swtich places with GL.
tam1MI
I'm surprised that DAYS is still holding in third place. After Deidre Hall and Drake Hogestyn exited, I thought sure their high ratings would nosedive, but no, they are right there in the mix.

Perhaps viewers are hanging on until Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans leave?

Some fascinating local-market daily numbers for soaps mid way through this thread. ABC is really big in North Carolina, apparently. I would have never guessed that there's this much local variation in soap ratings.
Dana Girl
Wow, Charlotte really loves soaps! AMC gets a 5.2, and GL beats out GH in Charlotte with a 3.2. Meanwhile nationally fans are hoping it can hit 1.8!

It's not necessarily a Southern thing-soaps don't perform nearly as well in Atlanta. Fascinating.

Damn, GH is still doing pretty well. I wonder how the ratings will be now that the "event" is over; here's hoping for a downward spiral.

I love that GH is the only soap to lose viewers.

The GH dailies reflect the effect of a snow storm that kept people house bound. The moment they get out, the ratings crater. Three 1.9's. Amusing, but sad, at the same time.
rue bee
It always cracks me up that GH is the worst with male viewers after all of Guza's sad efforts to torn the show into Sopranos II.
PaintStickConvert
But it makes me sad for women, that a certain number are winning to watch Sopranos II.
Black Knight
The ABC soaps do bring up the rear for Girls 12-17, though - looks like they don't think that the asshole duos of Sonny/Jason, John/Todd, and Ryan/Zach are swoonworthy. With the women a lot of nostalgia and loyalty to the vets, backburnered good actors and beloved characters currently being horribly written is probably involved.

Those Guiding Light numbers are not good. The show really is good now. The problem is they need to get people to try it out again.
Black Knight
I think the March Madness pre-emptions had an adverse effect.
DanaMB
I really hope that's not an excuse GH can use!
Black Knight
Was any of March Madness on ABCD? I know AMC and OLTL had a full week of eps and assumed GH did also. I guess there's the issue of male viewers, but GH has been at or near the bottom of that category for a while and it's also not the preferred demo.
Mky Paw
All of March Madness is on CBS. There's the school of thought that other shows ratings might be down because TV's normally tuned to ABC or NBC were on CBS for the basketball. But, Days ratings actually went up, so I'm not sure that's a valid theory.
