The moment they appeared on the screen during the first movie, you knew that this was inevitable.

Last Time Lord
Well, they do say everything's better with Penguins.

Could be fun.

This show has already been added to the trope examples. Awesome.
Twilight Man
This Friday, you can get the special 2 pack featuring Madagascar 2 and The Penguins of Madagascar.

Then on Saturday, Nick will be showing an episode of TPOM at 9:30.

King Julien will be so happy.
Twilight Man
All right, boys, listen up.

This Saturday, we've got a double mission.

First, we've got to build a rocket and launch ourselves to the moon.

Then, its time for some recon in the sewers.

We move out immeadiately after the KCA's are over.

Now let's get some shut-eye.

We've got a big day coming up.
Twilight Man
Skipper, we're a hit!!!!!

OK, boys, no time for rest.

All new episodes this whole month.

Let's move out.
Last Time Lord
I need to find when the show airs.
Twilight Man
8 AM, 5:30 PM, & 8 PM (until further notice).
Trini Girl
I recently saw a couple episodes of this show and . . . it's kind of hilarious! Love the voices.
Gulielma
I love it, too.

"Lift with your legs. Your tiny, tiny legs!"

CAT: (voiced by Wayne Knight] :"Oh, shooting star...I wish for a bird who can't fly... (notices trajectory of the "shooting star") And I also wish for the shooting star not to hit me!"

MORT: I like golf... (King Julien hits the golf ball, sending Mort into the air) I like flying... (Mort lands in the water) I don't like drowning....

SKIPPER: Status report.
KOWALSKI: I'm randomly pushing buttons as we careen out of control.

Also liked King Julien winning "Capture the Flag", until the penguins figure out how he does it... King Julien unexpectedly having pangs of conscience and rescuing Skipper.... Marlene hating being the damsel in distress....
ElleEstTrois
That foot fetish episode was...disturbing. Should children be looking at that? Weird. *shudders*
braggtastic
Who is doing Julien's voice? I watched a couple, but without SBC I wasn't as charmed and so don't have to come up with an excuse why I'm watching a show on Nickelodeon.
Gulielma
Wikipedia says that King Julien is voiced by Danny Jacobs. SBC probably would have been prohibitively expensive.
Fatty McButter
I'm find "Penguins" hysterical. OK, the foot fetish one was a disturbing, but I don't think kids would really get the undertones (just the way the Animaniacs or the original Looney Tunes had jokes that went over kids' heads).

I vaguely remember seeing "Madagascar," and not caring for it that much (wasn't Ray Romano in it? I detest him). King Julien is hilarious. I want a "pamper-time floaty throne." And it made me laugh when Marlene is talking about how she won three trophies, and he stops her with, "Your story is boring to me, because it is not about me. Do you see how this works?"
nobska
I love this show! I am completely out of the demographic for it, but my daughter and I watch together. Wasn't a huge fan of the movies, but I love the penguins. I find the most random things quite hysterical and we quote it back and forth to one another.
BuddhaBelly
This show is surprisingly funny, like burst out laughing funny. I just wish there were more episodes
irvington
I actually like this show, and I don't usually like animated movies or shows. When you say you wish there were more episodes, is it a limited run or just a new show?
Gulielma
It's a new show, and Nickelodeon schedules multiple reruns, even though its new and there are fewer episodes.

Liked the one where Maurice fills in as king of the lemurs when Julien is sent to the zoo hospital--and becomes completely power mad, due to bad red lychees.

Also like that the penguins are as deluded as King Julien, and that they underestimate him in "Penguiner Take All."

JULIEN: This calls for harsh mocking! Mock, mock, mock,....

Julien and Skipper are trapped in Joey the Kangaroo's habitat:
JULIEN: Skipper, if only one of us can make it out of here, let it be... Joey.
SKIPPER: Joey?
JULIEN: Oh, yeah, without the beatings this place wouldn't be half-bad.

JULIEN: And now I will make you all feel inferior, which is proper.
BuddhaBelly
The new episode was great. I love the penguins' car and its 60's modness. I do wonder where the humans are when they are racing around the zoo
Gulielma
SKIPPER just before he and the other penguins drive off in their little car: Officially, you have no idea what we're doing here.
MARLENE: Uh, huh. Unofficially, too.

King Julien announces the approach of a very special holiday.
MARLENE excitedly: Christmas in July! trailing off Except it's not Christmas... and it's not July.
dhb
I liked where Marlene was describing how she eats candy, and one of the penguins covered Rookie's eyes.
MissKit
I do enjoy this show, which doesn't surprise me as I thought the Penguins were the only thing worthwhile of the "Madagascar" movie.

What throws me off, though, is Marlene is being voiced by Nicole Sullivan, who also did Shego on "Kim Possible". She does a great job, but it's weird to hear "Shego" sounding so positive about things, since Marlene is a bit of an optimist.

And Jeff Bennett, who is voicing Kowalski, sounds an awful lot like John O'Herily. After watching one of the first episodes I had to run to imdb to see if it was John.
El Guapo
I love this show. It has everything I enjoyed about Madagascar, without everything I disliked (i.e the four main characters).

MORT: I like the circus! (shoved down Rico's throat) Why is the circus dark and slimy?

KOWALSKI: Cool cars go faster. It's a scientific fact.

I also liked how Kowalski responded to Julien's disdain, by saying their 60's mod car was "strategically adorable."
guano loca
Got to say I love this show. My 8 year old introduced me to it and now we watch it together. Love King Julien. The writing is just hilarious. It takes a lot to hold my interest in a kid's show(I've been suffering for years, it's what mothers do), but this one cracks me up.
Fatty McButter
While I enjoy King Julian, and find he steals whatever scene he's in (mostly from the way he fractures the language), I hope they don't go overboard with him...except that when he's not there, his absence is noticeable. I like it best when he plays off Skipper. The Joey episode was a good example, especially at the end, when Skipper comes to visit and notes how quiet it is without the music. "True dat," answers Julian, and that makes me laugh every time.

One thing I noticed that Mort's foot fetish seems to be the recurring joke, not just the one where the penguins try to break him of it.
Confidenchel
What throws me off, though, is Marlene is being voiced by Nicole Sullivan, who also did Shego on "Kim Possible".

Thank you! I've been trying to figure out where I've heard her voice before.

I freaking love this show. In the Madagascar movies, I thought King Julian was kind of funny, but on the show, he really bugs me for some reason. Maybe it's the voice change. I don't know.

I find myself quoting Skipper and Kowalski a lot in normal conversation. I love how almost all the jokes and writing on this show flies over my little cousin's head.
Gulielma
I love the body language and facial expressions of the animals.

"Eyes on me, Maurice. Your lazy eye, too."
"I don't have--"
"It's okay, I have one, too."
[Julien rolls his lazy eye.]

I also love the expression on Julien's face during this exchange:
MORT: I love computers!
JULIEN (obviously knowing the answer to this): So you know what it is then?
MORT: No... but I don't have to know to like!

So many characters aren't just one shot: the chameleons reappear in the racing episode (as the starting signals!), we see Joey the Kangaroo again....
Trini Girl
And it made me laugh when Marlene is talking about how she won three trophies, and he stops her with, "Your story is boring to me, because it is not about me. Do you see how this works?"

This quote is hilarious, and I need to find some way to work it into casual conversations.
Wacoshade
This show has become a favorite at our house as well. Love it when kid cartoons are smarter than kiddie pranks and slapstick antics.

And it's really funny that apparently Andy Richter does little Mort's voice. And James Patrick Stuart - who was Keith in Andy Richter Controls the Universe - voices Private.

And yeah, the penguins were the best thing about the movies, so it's great that we get these guys. I always loved the way the penguins have this whole commando force thing about them. Such a funny way to play on how we normally see them, but it still gels because penguins do have this way of behaving that is part committed and instinctual and seems internally complex, yet they're still very straightforward and even quite precise. And the way the flit around so fast and ride on their bellies, it's like in penguin documentaries, when they waddle along to water, they seem really pokey, but when they hit the water, they're speedy like torpedos. And the way that Rico is always upchucking some vital piece of equipment, it harkens back to them carrying their food around and then upchucking it to feed their babies.

Skipper: We're an elite force, not nurse maids!
Kowalski: Actually, incubation is a male thing for penguins. It's natural instinct.
Skipper: You too, Kowalski? We can't give in to every gushy urge nature's burdened upon our species!
I love the penguins' car and its 60's modness

That was pretty awesome. And of course, the custom New Jersey licence plate "I <heart> BNJVI" was brilliant.

Skipper: Aren't you boys tardy to the party!

Skipper: We can do this the easy way, or we can do this Rico's way.

King Julien: When I win, this hi-fi will be my-fi.

Skipper: Hey, that's our bag!
King Julien: No it isn't. It's our bag. Mort found it. Right, Mort?
Mort: Uh Huhhh.
King Julien: See? Finders keepers! Ha!
Skipper: Kowalski, legal analysis.
Kowalski: He's got you there, Skipper. It's the Finders Keepers Treaty of 1859.
Skipper: Blast! Secure another bag, men.
GoldenWoman
Mort is my favorite character and Private is my favorite penguin. This is one of my favorite exchanges.

Mort: I'm an Easel!
Julian: Mort shut up a little.
Mort: Ok.
Julian: What did I say?
Mort: Shut up a little!!
BuddhaBelly
This show gets better and better. I think I watch it just a lil too much.

Skipper: You mean there is no such thing as moon cat hospitality?
Wacoshade
Pick a lane, Private.
GoldenWoman
Mort playing a rabid dog the other night was hillarious. I also loved crazy Marlene. This is one of my favorite shows.
SydinSacramento
Have started watching these with Mr. Syd every night. Love the Season Pass on Tivo. Today, College Girl joined us and the phrase for the day is "Bad gator! Bad gator!" LOL, we're all wandering around the house dropping that line into conversation when we can. Anyone know how the schedule for new episodes works?
tennisgurl
I am just trying desperatly to think of an opportunity to use the word SKORKA!!! in real life without sounding completly insane.
Professor Fate
I'm a grown woman with no children and I love this show - I feel so much better after getting that off my chest. I can't get enough of Mort's obsession with Julian's feet.
ScuterPuter
I, too, am a grown woman with no children and I love this show. Whoever writes Julian's character is brilliant IMO.
MissKit
Grown woman w/o children #3 here! The writing overall is great. I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite character and all the voice actors are fantastic.

"That's between me...and the DANES."

(I also love how they bring things in from previous episodes, even sometimes just as an aside. Recently, there was another quick comment from Skipper about the Danish, which was mainly hilarious because it harkened back to an earlier episode.)
Trini Girl
Anyone know if there will be any new episodes?(Ever?) I know the production time is longer because it's animated.
Gulielma
There's supposed to be a slew of them this coming Saturday at 10 AM Eastern time.

I liked King Julien's "psst!" and pointing up to Wild Marlene in the tree. And the King Kong parody with Marlene carrying Julien up the monument and Kowalski getting the idea to use toy airplanes to attack Marlene.

"The female of the species--any species!"

Also good to see that Zookeeper Alice isn't *completely* oblivious to the penguins and their missions.

Like how minor characters come back from time to time, such as Max the Mooncat.

"The good news is most fatalities don't occur until the fifteenth week."
Gulielma
I enjoyed the Halloween episode where Skipper breaks his wing, is given a muscle relaxant, and the other penguins think he's a zombie. In the second part the penguins have to take out a hornet's nest that threatens the zoo's kiddie patrons. Kowalski realizes that Mort's stupidity/ignorance makes him immune to hornet sting and invents a Degaussing device to make Private stupid enough for the mission.

The Degaussing makes them all act like Mort, down to the foot fetish thing.

Kowalski's my favorite. I love his voice, his mad scientist vibe, and the way he never misses a beat when he asserts something and is immediately proved wrong.
mnementh
I love Kowalski too. I love how he always has his notepad and pencil ready to whip up a plan or do some figuring.

My absolute favorite thing ever said on the show was when they were playing hockey with the sewer rats and Kowalski was body slammed into the ice. When Skipper was trying to tell him that he wasn't in any condition to go back out and keep playing, Kowalski replied, "I'm as juxtaposed as the next hambuger." I don't know why but that cracked me up. It's such a perfect non-sequitor. I've actually used it in conversation a couple of times. (I got perplexed looks in response, but I didn't care.)
Bussy
I love Kowalski, too. He's so adorably earnest, and I crack up every time he spins his abacus. That is such a great little touch!

In the Pegnuin-centric Christmas extra on the Madagascar dvd, I noticed that Rico sometimes had lines. Not full sentences or anything, but he would say, "Kaboom!" in a crazy voice. But Rico on the show doesn't have any lines at all. I know it was probably just to save money by not having to pay an actor, but I actually kind of love it that way. He's somehow more expressive just silently regurgitating things.

I wish more shows geared to adults were as well-written as this show is. I'm 28 and I haven't really found many things that are this consistently smart and entertaining.
Wacoshade

Rico says stuff quite a bit. If it's a word, it might one syllable. But he is always making somekind of razza-wuzaa, blech-blurg, bleuhuehuehue kind of sound. Or a Koblamo! There was one episode where he kept screeching FISH. And I remember the funny Alaska dialogue between Kowalski and Skipper that ended with Rico screeching ANYTHING ANYTIIIIIING.

But that doesn't change the awesomeness that is Rico.

And it's an actor separate from the others cast as Rico. John Dimaggio voices him, and the guy has done as much or more than any other voice actor in the past 10 years, but he's best know as Bender.
Gulielma
John DiMaggio also voices Schnitzel (who mostly says only "Radda radda") on Chowder. Apparently he's the go to guy if you have an inarticulate character that needs a voice.

KOWALSKI: I could taste sound! But that's past.

KING JULIEN (introducing stuffed toys as friends): This is Janice, who wants to be a dental hygenist. This is Emile, who doesn't think she's suited for it. Why, Emile? Why must you crush Janice's dreams?

MAURICE (sighs): I'll go get the glue.
MORT: To eat?
MAURICE: Nooo.

SKIPPER: How soon will Rico be back to normal?
KOWALSKI: Rico normal or normal normal?
Trini Girl
I watched the "Merry Madagascar" special that aired on NBC, and it was weird to see the Penguins looking different because I've become so used to the character models from the TV show!
ScuterPuter
Count me in as another adult with no kids who just LOVES this show! I cannot get enough of King Julien-speak.
InvaderNorbert
I watched the "Merry Madagascar" special that aired on NBC, and it was weird to see the Penguins looking different because I've become so used to the character models from the TV show!

I saw it too and I thought it was really jarring to hear Cedric The Entertainer's voice coming out of Maurice, and the penguins save for Skipper with slightly different voices. Also, was that Sacha Baron Cohen as Julian or the VO for the show? Because if it was Sacha, the guy they have for the show does a dead-on imitation of that
Trini Girl
Also, was that Sacha Baron Cohen as Julian or the VO for the show?

I checked the credits; it wasn't Sacha. But almost all the original voice cast was in it.
