Age: 35
Hometown: Dallas, TX via Opelousas, LA
Occupation: Rodeo Competitor
Marital Status: Single
Birthdate: 24 May 1973
Steven is a geographic consultant by day and a rodeo cowboy by night. He is a champion bull rider in the gay rodeo circuit. He attended the Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX as well as the University of North Texas in Denton. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in General Agriculture/Marketing and lists graduating from college as his proudest accomplishment. He also worked on a master's Degree in Applied Geography. In the past, he has hauled horses across the country, taken people on horseback riding treks in the Colorado Rockies and served as a camp director at a children's camp.
Steven describes himself as spontaneous, outgoing and outrageous. He describes his perfect romantic partner as strong and masculine, financially secure and smart. His favorite activities are being outside with his dog, Payton, a one-eyed miniature Daschund, watching television and working out. His favorite television shows are "Heroes," "Project Runway" and "Nip/Tuck." His hero is Chris LeDoux, a former rodeo cowboy who is now a country music star.
He sees himself as being extremely good at reading people and then manipulating them into doing what he wants them to do. He feels he is unique and random and claims that everyone who meets him likes him.

The requisite gay guy. As long as he's more like Beau and Dustin and less like Marcellas and Joshuah, I think he'll be fun to watch.

He's quite the voyeur given his three choices of favorite television shows. You don't find many shows with more freaks on them than Heroes, Project Runway and Nip/Tuck. I'm kind of surprised he didn't list Jerry Springer as well. Interestingly, he could be the first gay houseguest to really excel at the physical competitions which itself would be a welcome change of pace.

After reading
Jen's take on the houseguests, I'm really not as sure about this guy as I was before. He's only going on the show for the fame and plans to play up to the cameras.

Aren't all the houseguests going on this show for fame and fortune? Don't they all play up to the camera? Steven was simply more upfront about the fame aspect of being in the house. I won't say it was the wise of him to be so casual if not bold about it. Still, I won't begrudge the guy for stating the obvious.

The guy sounds cool enough to root for right from the get-go. I don't care if they are here for the fame. As long as they are entertaining enough for me, I'm game.

I have to root for this guy, if for nothing else, simply from having roots in my home state.
(Besides, I find him really attractive.)
I'm fascinated by his biography, and how he's direct with what he wants. I want this man to go far.
Now, I thought the same thing about Joushah when he was introduced, and we know what happened there. Please don't be a repeat!

While I do appreciate that he was upfront about his intentions, I hope he doesn't do it to the point where it's unwatchable.
I watched B.J. & Tyler mug their way around the world on TAR9, watch Todd Herzog mug his way to victory on Survivor: China, and saw Joshuah, Matt, and Adam all mug their way through BB9, and all of those instances made me uncomfortable.
If Steven avoids any excessive mugging or hamming it up for the cameras, I think we'll get along just fine.

Unless he turns into an emotional wreck like Bunky, Steven could very well be the best gay contestant ever on this show. Granted, with the likes of Beau, Joshuah, Dustin, Joe and Marcellas have been in the house before him, it won't take much to outclass that group. Plus, I think he's the hottest of the guys in the house this season so I'm hoping he sticks around for a while.

I actually never thought Beau was too bad. I think Steven would actually get along with him quite well.

Missed the first episode but I'm a little gun shy after the last two (and my first two) seasons. Still this is the guy that has me tempted to tune back in.
One question though. What the heck is a "geographic consultant"?
Steven: " Hello Acme Geographic Consultants"
Caller: "Yes, is China in the East or West?"
Steven: "Where do you live?"
Caller: Chicago
Steven: Well Caller, China is West of Chicago. But it is also East if you go far enough in that direction.
Caller: Uh. O...kay.
Steven: next caller
Caller 2: I want to move somewhere warm. Should I go to Siberia or the Sahara?

From "Jen's Take" (linked upthread):
Steven's really nice. He says that he was flipping through the channels, saw Nick on "BB8" and continued to watch the rest of the season.
Heh, if Steven knows that Nick and Jen are dating (they are still dating, right?) then this is some awesome sucking up to the interviewer. It worked, too; Jen says she'd like to see him in the Final 3, with Libra and Renny. (Seriously, Jen? Renny???)

master's degree in Applied Geography
??
Is there such a thing as "Theoretical Geography"? You know, making maps of places you know nothing about?
Those maps of Middle Earth in the "Lord of the Rings" - do they fall under the class of "Fictional Geography?"
I apologise for my ignorance.

I'd say Steven is gone next Wednesday, barring a veto win.
I was all set to hate him after his comment about Libra, but this season's group is so unlikeable and turned against Steven's alliance in such a childish, nasty way (you aren't even allowed to speak to Brian, Dan, etc.) that he somehow became one of the more tolerable people in the house.

Many social science disciplines have master's degrees in applied versions of their fields - applied psych, applied sociology, etc. Basically, they emphasize skills more than theory, and they often don't lead to PhDs.

I would've sided with him on Jessie being a tool . . . if he hadn't lied to him about where he was when everyone else saw the HoH room.
CRFTony
Jul 20, 2008 @ 9:42 pm
But did he lie? On the show, they showed almost everyone in the HOH room kissing the king's ring and then someone noticed Steven on the monitor and said "Oh, Steve's awake now". That's also how it appeared to unfold on BBAD, so unless the live feeds revealed something different, I think Steven was being truthful.

I took Jessie's whine about respect as grasping at the nearest straw. He's threatened by Steven, as he's probably threatened by any of the men in the house who manage to look attractive without distorting their bodies.
I normally don't like using the "ignorant" word as an excuse, but the past few weeks have made me think Steven is a nice guy who needs to do some serious growing up. Since he has - removing a few stupid comments - been the first tolerable gay man I can remember since Will Wikle, I'll be disappointed to see him leave. Brian/Steven/Angie/Dan seemed to be one of the very rare groups of people on BB who actually realized this is all just a game, and no need to spend hours threatening violence and spewing hatred.
However, Steven going early (if he goes) will probably do him a favor, because the very nature of BB means if he stayed, he would be almost bound to become a huge asshole and the latest embarrassment to the gay community.

Yeah, ignorant is definitely no excuse when it comes to the kind of appalling, unabashed racism that Steven showed. I grew up in the most ignorant place on earth when it comes to race (rural Alabama) and I have NEVER heard someone under the age of 80 refer to someone as "that colored girl." Absolutely shocking!! No one has used that term with any semblance of decency since the early sixties, and its use today indicates a pretty malignant racism. As decent as he seems to be when it comes to dealing with white people, there's just no getting past that, and I'm really glad to see him go. What an embarrassment to gay people! As a white Southern queer man, I'm embarrassed by him on three levels!

He was perfectly decent to Ollie and Libra (he even comforted Libra after her fight with Jerry and Renny). His closest friend in the house is Asian. He got along well enough with everyone regardless of race.
He made some very ignorant comments, I'm sure he will be called on them, and I hope he apologizes and realizes what he said was stupid. But, unless he does something stupid after he's voted out, I can't say I find him an embarrassment to gays. Not after the horror of Marcellas, Joe, Dustin, Josh. I wouldn't call him a role model either, but I think he's a young man with a lot of growing up to do, who, aside from his stupid comments, behaved well.

Sometime during the first week, I think. It was on the feeds, but didn't make the air shows.

I agree that Steven seemed like a mostly decent guy. It was really unfortunate that he used the term "colored" because that automatically put him in that compartment in my mind that said I couldn't root for him. If it weren't for that, I probably would have been rooting for him because he otherwise seemed like a nice and caring person.
While I think saying "colored" is horrendous, I don't think Steven is unredeemable. As others have said it was an ignorant statement, and I think he does need to grow up a bit. But I think he has a solid foundation to be a real stand up guy. And, there is no doubt in my mind that he was much more tolerable than the likes of any gay man on BB since Wil Wikle, that's for sure.

Steven was my favorite houseguest. I wish that he hadn't been evicted. Loved his speech though, even though as others have said, it was a bit confusing.
Loved the last part..."Suck it, bitches." LOL

This is kind of a fine distinction, but what I'm saying about "colored" isn't that the act of saying it was horrendous, although it was, but that saying it was a symptom of a really deep-seeded grossness of character. I'm sure he's redeemable--even George Wallace came around in the end--but I'm just saying that in a lifetime of growing up in the most openly racist culture in America, I have never heard a young person use that word. It's just really strange.

I guess no one posted this, but I saw that Steven cleared up the "colored girl" comment on Housecalls (I think) and other interviews. I don't watch Housecalls anymore since Dick became a regular guest, but apparently he said that he was imitating JERRY with that comment. Jerry kept calling Libra "that colored girl" in the first few days because he couldn't remember her name. I was watching the feeds when that happened, and I totally didn't get that Steven was imitating someone. But I want to believe him because he really grew on me!
(It seems Jerry was also making Asian jokes in those first days, but BB told him to knock it off.)

That's interesting. I can totally see how something like that could be taken out of context since we weren't privy to the first few days they were actually in the house. I know that I have used a word that could be construed as racist before when, in fact, what I'm doing is making fun of the stupidity of the racist people. Out of context, that could make anyone look really bad.
It does make me feel a lot better about Steven, though, and it seems pretty believable to me that something like that could happen.

Well that makes a lot more sense. It's just so antiquated a term, I can see it coming out of Jerry's mouth. Good. I wanted to like Steven, I really did.

The house sure has become far less interesting and fun to watch since Steven's exit. Please let there be a sequestor of the first few evicted houseguests with one or more them coming back to replace some of the cockroaches who are still living there.

Steven may have cleared up that "that colored girl" thing (although I wonder how much of that was ass-covering) but in the first few days of the feeds he made a slanted eyes remark about Julie, said the women in the house who are on their periods shouldn't be allowed to vote or make decisions and should be locked in the storage room, and made stereotypical comments about Jews. He's a bigoted creep, I'm glad he's gone, and I hope he never gets a chance to come back.

He's in town for the San Diego gay rodeo and showed up for the kick off Boots'n'Briefs (don't ask) contest.
His undies were auctioned off for $80 I believe - which isn't that bad, given the amounts paid out for the other "contestants".

I suppose Steven's parting words to the BB house/title of this thread will now take on a whole new life.
He's going to be doing a porn movie directed by Chi Chi La Rue. This was mentioned in the media thread first, but hasn't been here yet.
