I thought we might as well start the snarking early.

Yes, from the same team responsible for 'updating' The Wizard of Oz into Tin Man, comes a new 6 hour miniseries based on Alice in Wonderland. Which was inevitable once TM became SciFi's highest rated program. Probably didn't take them long to sit down and think, what other iconic children's story can we rape? It was announced during SciFi's upfront back in March, no airdate or casting has been released. It's too late to film for September so I'm betting February sweeps.

Wait, didn't Halmi (Jr. & Sr.) help Willing redo Alice in Wonderland already?
Vermicious Knid
So they did, but that appears to be a faithful adaptation. This time it looks like they're doing the same thing as Tin Man, which means Alice will probably be 25 and a space waitress who falls down a wormhole into a land of genetic mutations ruled by the alien Queen of Hearts who likes to rip out the real thing.

If it's made by the same people who made that hot mess Tinman, I am there! The wicked witch opening her bodice and monkeys flying out is some classic schlock! I can't wait to see what they come up with for Alice.

One thing to look forward is the wonderful Jean Marsh who is, I belive, going to be playing the Queen of Hearts adn I heart Jean Marsh....after all, it's Queen Bavmorda people....

I remember that the Halmi/Willing adaptation of Alice I noted earlier came off as something of a mess, too. It was bizarrely more like the Wizard of Oz than Alice in Wonderland, and not much of a straightforward adaptaion, actually.

I actually really liked the past Halmi/Willing version, mainly because it was the first version I had seen since the 30's version with Charlotte Henry, that had a competent actress playing Alice. The main problem was the insistence on stringing the events together using a story that did not fit the story's theme.

I will actually be calmly excited about this. AIW is one of my favorite stories, and outside of, oh, Lost Girls'ing it, I don't think they could truly ruin it for me.

IMDB is saying Sarah Michelle Geller will star as Alice and it's based on a video game. They're wrong a lot, aren't they? I hope they are.
CheerAngel
Not the same project; that ones been in the works for a while, an adaptation of American McGee's Alice, a graphically gothic game based loosely on the story.

Oh Gosh I've played that game. Alice starts off in a psych hospital and armed with a butcher knife then gets bigger weapons from there. I can see why they might pick SMG for it, although Eliza Dushku's Faith would probably be a closer fit.

I'll probably give this Alice a chance if for no other reason than curiousity as to how they will twist things. I like Jean Marsh too and am glad she got work.
Vermicious Knid
The Alice video game version is the one that links from Jean Marsh's page. So I don't think she's in the SciFi miniseries after all.

It's a go. It will be four hours, not six this time.
The new "Alice" promises to be different than previous incarnations (more than a few of which were produced by RHI). The project is written and directed by Nick Willing, who also did Sci Fi's highly rated "Wizard of Oz" revamp "Tin Man."

"We thought 'Alice' was the perfectly underlying material to tell a classic story with a modern twist," said Robert Halmi Jr., president and CEO of RHI entertainment. "We'll have new incredible worlds and a more grown-up feel."

The Chesire Cat will jump out of her boobs?

I think Riverworld is going to be a big fail. There's a good reason no one has managed an adapatation of any PJF property.

Including Sci-Fi's previous version.

As for "Alice", it might work, but I'm not hoping. I wonder what the Halmi's actually do. There are aspects of "Tin Man" I didn't like but I don't know if it's their fault.

The principal cast has been announced (from Eclipse Magazine). Tim Curry (as the Dodo) and Kathy Bates (as the Queen of Hearts) lead the cast as far as name actors go. Caterina Scorsone (IMDb link) is the titular character. Other cast members include perennial sci-fi actors such as Matt Frewer, Colm Meaney, and Alex Diakun.

Regarding the premise, there's this:
Alice is a fiercely independent twenty-something who finds herself on the wrong side of a mirror. As the press release pits it, “She is a stranger in an outlandish city of twisted towers and casinos built out of playing cards, all under the rule of a deliciously devilish Queen who’s not very happy about Alice’s arrival.”

OMG I played that game when I was like 15 and it was seriously one of the weirdest/best games ever because it was just all so fantastical and disturbing, and it totally fit right in with my already pre-conceived notion that Alice in Wonderland is one f'd up work of art (that freakin' cheshire cat scared me as a kid!). Man I've been waiting forever for that film adaption to get made...

This project sounds cool though. I like the sound of that plot description. Kathy Bates as the Queen of Hearts? Ha!

There's now a 30-second trailer, and I think it makes Tin Man look like a masterpiece.
Tricksterson
I think I might actually like this. I started out hating Tin Man but wound up liking it, especially after it was revealed that D. G. was a descendant of the original Dorothy, not an expy. This apparently starts out letting us know there was a previous Alice, which is good because that kind of trick only works once.
What I'd really like to see is a TV/film adaptaion of Cheshire Crossing or even better Lost Girls. But that last one ain't ever gonna happen, more's the pity.

The promos currently running on SyFy are doing absolutely nothing for me. I'll pass.
