I no longer see the show in the drop down menu, so I figured it was time to start the single thread for discussion.
Show's been renewed for a second season to start mid-season on CW, so, to break in the new digs, let's break out the glazed victory ham, and Turkey Jerky as we relive the glorious season one, and anticipate where the show will go next.

Even tho I'm on a weird computer in a distant land (well, not that distant) I had to chime in here and join the virtual party. Thanks for getting us started, LTL. I'm still expecting cake and cupcakes. Nothing new to say right now about the show or life in general, but we need to post frequently to keep the thread bumped up, so someone should start something controversial, soon.
I mentioned before that the desert was making me feel emotional...in that mode I've been thinking a lot about blue sunflower's future fic, which is linked from the original board and I can't figure out how to do stuff like that on this laptop. Blue, I decided I was all wrong to call it sad. But I can't say more til I get back home because this connection is driving me nuts. Well it is supposed to be a getaway.

I can't believe I forgot the Mangotini!
Hopefully, we'll get some spoiler information some what soon, despite the mid-season start date.
A least we have an interesting cliff-hanger for us to speculate on until then.

BTW, LTL, they are still talking on the old Reaper boards, go to All Forums (or something like that) on the drop down, takes you to that list page and Reaper is still there. See ya here or there!

Aw, well, we've officially been PH'd. I had been preparing myself for the actual event, but it's still a little sad. :(
And now with that simpering out of the way, we can talk about the awesome-ness that is this show. Oh, and speaking of spoilers for the second season, I'm kind of not sure if I want to know what's coming up. Although, that cliffhanger we got was a doozy, so that's going to nag at me all summer.

I'm going to try to avoid spoilers but it's harder with a single thread. I've read boards for shows I'm watching years late, and when I see posts that are discussing stuff I don't want to know, I just "blur my eyes" and skim along. Anyway, spoilers don't bother me so much with
Reaper as with other shows. I don't really watch this show for the surprises--though there have been many--but to see how it plays out with the awesome characters. Plus, I know I've said elsewhere, but I'm learning that I'm
terrible at any kind of speculation. I just have no idea what is going to happen next. I enjoy everyone else's, but I'm usually baffled. Time for another quote from Buffy:
Xander: “That’s the funny thing about me, I tend to hear the actual words people say and accept them at face value.”
I'm going to link
here to the old board, too. Barnes kindly explained to me where to find it, and I don't want to forget.

*squeezes in* Hi everyone. I brought some minty brain meds to help with the psychological adjustment. I'll do my part to bring the cast and show talk through the hiatus. As for spoilers, are we all okay with the official kind? As long as people just spoiler font the moles and double secret inside info, I'm good.
I miss the show already. I may put Bret on my google alert to help find the news over the slow period. If I google alert "Reaper" I'll get a lot of unrelated junk won't I?
So has anyone been rewatching the finale?

Aw, we're in the single thread already. I thought maybe we'd get the summer. Sniffle.
Whew. I've been rewatching this show a little bit. Last weekend I caught the Ashes to Ashes episdode, which I guess I missed the first time around. That was kind of important! I don't know how I'm going to wait until midseason to get this show. I don't think ratings were bad enough to do that, but oh well.

I remember not liking Ashes to Ashes all that much. What was important that was in it? I only watched it once and don't remember, except that it was the last one they aired before the mini-hiatus. I didn't like the Ash soul and the whole way they collected all those ashes was just too beyond belief and silly.
Stinger97
Jun 2, 2008 @ 9:55 am
Yep, I didn't really like Ashes to Ashes either for the exact reasons you mentioned,
PJ. As for the importance of the episode though, that was when we first met Cady and when Sam decided he wasn't going to wait for Andi to be ready for a relationship any longer. If you missed this episode then, you didn't really know where Cady came from or who she was.

You shouldn't get too much junk if you just Google alert "Reaper CW." You may get some information on both
Reaper and other shows on The CW, but you should basically get what you're looking for.

I think I've been thrown off by spoilers more often than not-- even the trailers mess with your episode expectations. Somebody at the CW likes their red herrings.

That was the episode with Ben's grandmother, right? Where we find out he was supposed to be a priest, and the scene where Nana stabs Sam with a fork? Good times, good times.

Oh, was that the one with Ben's grandma? I liked that then. Cady now seems like a mistake they are moving on from so I didn't consider her that important to your overall understanding of the show. She just came and went.

Aw, for serious? I think Ashes to Ashes was one of my favorite early episodes. Possibly because I thought Mimi was hysterical and kind of wish they hadn't moved her to New Mexico. Also, the scene at the end where they're blowing all of the ashes they collected out across the lake is my favorite shot in the entire history of the show thus far.
Plus, a good Ben episode. Ben's Various Girl-Related Woes were not half as interesting as Ben's awesome giant family.
And yeah, Sam getting stabbed.
... Now I have to go watch that episode over again.
Bec
Jun 2, 2008 @ 1:05 pm
Yeah, I kind of love that bit near the end when they're at that pretty place (was it a lake?) where they're blowing the ashes away, and Sock says Satan wants Sam's "man-seed"? It'd be really easy to interpret that the wrong way. (Well, it's the right way to interpret it if you want to bust a gut).
What was that place anyway? It's gotta be somewhere around Vancouver, right? Isn't that where they shoot this show?
We never did get far along enough on the forum to have a whole thread about shoot locations, did we?

Mhm, the show is shot in Vancouver. Along with SPN, I believe.

I thought Mimi was hysterical and kind of wish they hadn't moved her to New Mexico.
I actually thought about Mimi when I was in Santa Fe this past week. Maybe because I have a major crush on that actress, especially after she had sex with Mal as Nandi in
Firefly. (Did that make sense?) I remember posting at the time of the ep, it was perfect for that character to go to New Mexico, she is such the type. Which, by the way, I highly recommend New Mexico to anyone who hasn't been there, which for some reason I assume is most people here. The high desert is amazing. I'm not typically highly spiritual, but you feel it there. Also can see why a lot of creative types are attracted, it does stir something in the soul.
Also, the scene at the end where they're blowing all of the ashes they collected out across the lake is my favorite shot in the entire history of the show thus far.
Me, too. It was the first time I saw they had some--is it reverence?--for the dead. A little more serious. And lovely.
And then the wind changes direction and the ashes blow back at them.
Apparently this happens all the time in real life. Which is why the last time I spread any ashes I made sure to do it right on the (chosen) ground.

Ahh, it finally happened! Our entire forum, locked up; that was a scary sight to see.
Word to everyone else who liked the end scene to Ashes. I always like it when they make things more serious and try giving the scenes some kind of depth, because they tend to do just right.
So, when do we think we'll here about DVD news? I'm hoping soon, cause that's gonna be the big thing holding me over until the show comes back. I hope they load it up on special feautures too: mainly commentaries and a gag reel. That's not too much to ask is it?

I kind of love Ashes to Ashes, if only because the following never fails to crack me up:

Sam: Where's Uncle Hector now?
Ben: He lives in the house, no one can talk to him.

Some commentaries would be great. While we're making a wishlist, I would love a blooper reel. Essentially, I just want to see them all goofing off. I doubt they could include that music video that Valarie made, but that would be awesome.
Bec
Jun 2, 2008 @ 5:54 pm
I want a reel of all the times they scream their heads off on the show. That never fails to crack me up. Hell, if I have time maybe I'll put a vid together. I just rewatched the pilot again, and Bret screams his head off like 5 times in that one ep. How do they manage to not lose their voices? That just astounds and amazes me.
There has to be plenty of gag reel material, too. There's too much physical comedy going on for there not to be some goofs caught on camera. And there's no way they never cracked up in the middle of a scene.
pacejunkie
Jun 2, 2008 @ 8:12 pm
Bloopers are my favourite part of DVDs always. I'd also like deleted scenes (but good ones please) and commentary from Kevin Smith and Ray Wise for the pilot, some writers and cast for the other better eps. Marino and Black please commenting on Rebellion. Bret for the finale.
I'd also like to see a feature on the souls and the special effects work that goes into them.

Why do I feel like all this wishing is going to bite us in the ass and we end up with like the most barebones set ever, though still with an MSRP of $59.99? But, I guess since we're already well into the wishing, I'll throw my hat into the ring too -- I want tons of commentaries with most of the cast and tons of featurettes. Again, though, at this point, I'll be satisfied with just getting a set at this point.

In other news, Missy made the 2008 AfterEllen.com
Hot 100. Sure, she's #98, but she's there!
Around this time...various American men's magazines release their lists of the hottest/most beautiful women, and every year, lesbian and bi women are left puzzled at many of the women they choose. So ... we offered AfterEllen.com readers an opportunity to nominate the women you found most attractive, and the results were interesting — and decidedly different.
It's one of those pain-in-the-ass-to-page-through lists, but somewhere is Eliza Dushku and Aly Hannigan, Grace Park from
BSG (yay!), and, yes, Blake Lively from
Gossip Girl. *ducks* Hooray Missy! BTW, the link by her picture leads to this
page of stories about her, which you have to follow a few cuts to read. Nice pics of her, so it's worth it.

I don't think I have anything drawn right now that isn't for somebody's fanfic, but I've been working on learning how to draw his head so it actually... looks like his head (for that Big Effing Reaper Comic I wanna do!), and once I've got that down I'll maybe feel comfortable drawing something to send him. Anyways, I was surprised after it ended because it resembled nothing of the pilot, which is what I was expecting. There was character progression with Sam in accepting his Reaper status, insight into his family life, expanded time at The Work Bench, which included Ben's, "I dont wanna die at the bench" line. Ah, the classic "I don't want to die at the Bench!" episode. Or "Charged" or something. Whatever. I can't stop wondering if the writers had the finale in mind when this episode was penned, because it sure changes the entire undertone of the "Sam tells his mom the truth" subplot. Originally a nice little side bit, or demonstration of Sam growing up a little, and Sam's dad being a bit of a creep, I now have absolutely no idea what to think. They decide to be honest with each other, and a few episodes later she's digging up Sam's dead/undead father. WTF?
And speaking of WTF, never trust those "hottest" lists. Conan O'Brien has done a good job of mocking them thanks to People naming him a few times (and then there was an internet poll for the winner? And Conan won it, beating George Clooney? And then did a feature called 'cheer up, George Clooney'? That was awesome.) That picture of Becks blows my mind though; I had thought by a "fuck me" pose people were talking about the usual sexxxy poses he does, but no, that seriously is an "I would like to have gay sex now" pose. Wowzah.

I really liked Charged, except I remember the one thing that bugged me was that the pilot seemed to end with a Sam content to accept his destiny and even finding it cool. He says he wants to do this. Then the start of the very next episode finds him literally running away from his responsibility over and over for laughs. Seemed inconsistent to me. But I just loved the monster truck and the way it got run over.

Pacejunkie, that bugged me, too. But then he did seem seriously bummed when he realized he has to keep doing this when the devil handed him that second box and told him he's done when he dies. There were a lot of "kinda"s and "I think"s in his little speech about feeling like he wants to do this, and he said that while still on the high of a big victory. So it works that the next morning when he's not totally awake and feeling kinda cranky, he can lean more towards Sock's advice to tell the devil to "eat it". This was, afterall, a guy who for 21 years got away with doing everything half-assed and giving up when things get slightly hard. Old habits die hard.
But I just loved the monster truck and the way it got run over.
