Premiering later this year:
The Disney Channel production, featuring sibling rockers the Jonas Brothers, is scheduled to start shooting in early 2008 and premiere later in the year. According to the house the Mouse built, J.O.N.A.S. will star 19-year-old Kevin, 18-year old Joseph, and 15-year-old Nick Jonas as, well, pretty much themselves, but in addition to their daily rock-superstar duties, they will moonlight as secret agents, the bane of all benign bad guys' existence.
In addition, to being their last name, J.O.N.A.S. also stands for Junior Operatives Networking as Spies.

No, you don't need help. I'm kind of interested as well.
This sounds like Hannah Montana meets VIP (Pamela Anderson's old syndicated action series). It also reminds people when Brandy was an established singing sensation and started doing "Moesha".

Kevin, Nick, and Joe are three brothers who hit the big time as hugely popular teen idols. How do teen idols live an ordinary life? They don’t! But as they try to be normal boys doing “normal” things, life keeps getting less and less “normal”. Living in the fish bowl can’t get any funnier!
So it's like...the guy version of Hannah Montana? Except for the whole secret identity, I guess. Which is a pretty big part of the HM shtick. But still...teen idols? Ugh. I thought the spy idea was kinda ridiculous, but this is just tired.

So they 86ed the whole "They're singers and spies" thing? As ridiculous as that sounded, at least Disney could have had more fun with that.
The production companies for Disney sitcoms are notorious for limiting the number of additional sets that need to be built and they try to keep everything under budget.
Keeping the scenes to mostly H.S. and home is cheaper than trying to show an exotic locale every week.

Ok I'm not a fan of their music at all, but I do manage to have a crush on Joe and am fond of Kevin but seriously I can't believe Disney got THIS greedy. Every time I watch the trailer I laugh, but unintentionally from the cheesiness of it all. I will admit that I think Joe could genuinely be an ok actor. If he's smart he'll realize that his music is crap and leave the group (after the inevitable popularity decline) to pursue acting. Ugh I'm torn on whether I should watch the premiere or not, but I may do it just for Joe (damn his good looks!!!).

It's not so much that I'm looking forward to it as I'm curious about it and will probably watch. Which is more than I can say for
Sunny With a Chance, which I still haven't seen a full episode of. So
Jonas has that going for it.

Agreed. I was really impressed by how much he
didn't suck in

There is no new episode of iCarly this week. It got pushed back to next Saturday (perhaps because of JONAS?), so basically this show doesn't have much competition during its timeslot. Nick is airing the Fairly Odd Parents Movie instead. Don't know how popular that show is, so I'm not sure what impact that will have, if any.

I have zero intention of watching this show, but everytime I see the promos it reminds me of The Monkees. As in that's the over the top campy vibe the show is going for. Maybe in reality it's nothing like that, but it's always the comparison that crosses my mind.

Hey, I've been thinking the same thing! So you're not the only one. And, having seen actual clips, it's definitely got that campy, surreal, over-the-top feel to it. Which isn't a bad model to follow, actually. The Monkees were a bunch of guys who weren't exactly the best actors ever but the tone of the show made it okay.

May 1, 2009 @ 3:08 pm
Thank you! I'm not alone. I've been thinking that since the very beginning, but have never seen that mentioned before. Maybe it's just that I grew up watching The Monkees and adored that show as a kid (even though it was before my time). I wouldn't be surprised if that is what the producers were basing the show on considering kids today would have no reference point to that show.
I also agree it's not a bad model to follow.

I think i might give this show a chance. It looks cheesy and campy, but that seems to be intentional, so I can get past that aspect. Mainly it's because, after watching Camp Rock, I think the Jonas Brothers are much better actors than they are singers (though, I don't know if that's saying much).

I saw a bit of the first episode. It was okay, not fantastic, but okay. Hopefully (for they're fans sake), it gets better on, because compared to the other sitcoms on Disney/Nick (iCarly, Hannah Montana, True Jackson VP, etc.), it's a weak link.

May 2, 2009 @ 8:31 pm
Wow, I thought that was just awful. The writing was just......bad. The jokes all fell flat, though I think Joe and Kevin tried, poor things. I know that pilots are usually bad, but this went beyond just the realm of "bad pilot episode".
I know Nick is supposed to come off as "intense" and filled with angst or whatever, but so far he just comes off as bad tempered and spoiled. I liked Joe and Kevin because they weren't such drama queens and just went with the flow. I think the episodes would improve dramatically if they take the focus off Nick.
Both the girls started off as really grating, but I think they may get better. Seriously, though, it better improve from here because I can't see how it could get worse.
I agree with Talov, this just does not stack up well against the other Nick/Disney sitcoms on right now. iCarly, True Jackson, Wizards of Waverly Place, Hannah Montana and even Sonny With a Chance are miles ahead of this show.

This show definitely needs some work. However, they did surprise a laugh or two out of me.
While the show wasn't great, I was so busy evaluating the guys that it held my interest. And here are my observations.
Nick is more natural than I expected but kinda flat and stiff. But I'm sure he'll loosen up over time.
Kevin wasn't all that natural but was very relaxed and energetic. I can see him getting much better with experience.
Joe was the most natural and relaxed of all, but even he has a ways to go.
Overall, there's no doubt this show never would've made it to air if it didn't star the Jonas brothers.

Okay, I just saw the second episode, "Groovy Movies", on Youtube. I take back everything I said on my last post. This show is HORRIBLE. If you thought the pilot was bad, the second episode won't be much better either. Completely wooden acting from all the Jonas Brothers, they're youngest one Frankie, too. Basically, "Groovy Movies", is just like that Jack Black and Mos Def movie (I think it's called Be Kind and Rewind), where they accidentally destroyed the movies of they're video store and reenact them on video camera. Except on "JONAS", it's painfully unfunny. I think I've just lost complete faith in this show. Oh, and that blonde girl, who is supposed to be they're childhood friend, is a complete Ashley Tisdale knockoff.

May 2, 2009 @ 11:31 pm
Strange, but I thought the second episode was an improvement over the pilot. I actually laughed a few times, though the home movies scene was dragged out for way too long and the little brother was annoying.
Nick was much better in this episode, but I think Joe is the most natural actor of the bunch. The parents were a bit annoying as well. I liked Stella in this episode.
I still thought it was pretty bad, but it was better than the pilot.

Okay.
I usually separate
Kid Coms into three categories. "Good," "Cute," and "Bad." "Good" is a kids show that is actually GOOD and can hang with the grown-up shows or at least stay within 10 feet of them. (iCarly, Wizards of Waverly Place, Drake and Josh). "Cute" are kids shows are aren't really good, but you can tell the crew is having a lot of fun, the cast is brimming with personality and are at least trying to put out a watchable program (True Jackson, Hannah Montana, both incarnations of the Suite Life). "Bad" is well...bad. Most likely falls within the execution of elements (or the entire premise) or it's obviously a made-for-money show (All That after everyone left, Sonny With A Chance and...this show).
I can at least appreciate that has no laugh track, something completely overused in Disney sitcoms. The one blonde girl isn't bad either, they just need to tone down her fashionista tendencies. Everything else blows.
The Jonases tried, but they can't act. At all. All the attempts of "personality" just fell flat. And god, the Jonas Superfan is going to grate. She needs something else to do, FAST. Definitely a made-for-money TV show. I'll watch some more to see if it gets better, but I doubt it.
Dear Disney Channel: Not every kid you own needs a TV show. Demi makes pretty decent pop and Jonas Brothers...well lots of girls like them. They're fine just making music. They don't need shows. Love, Mega J.
PS: For the love of God, not every kid show needs an annoying little kid. Alex adds nothing to WOTW, the one techno brat is worthless in SWAC, and the same goes here. iCarly proved you don't need an 8 year old to hold the churrun's attention.

Mostly agree with this, but I would put Sonny With a Chance in the "Cute" category. It's been getting steadily better and the recent episodes have been good IMO.
This show, however, needs to improve a whole lot and it needs to improve fast to avoid being one of the worst on TV.

I only got through the first 15 minutes of the first episode and that was more than enough. I was honestly left speechless (and not in a good way) and that does not happen very often.
I agree with the above comment that this mess ONLY made it to television because it has the Jonas Bro. Clearly, Disney is banking on the horny tween/teen girls who will buy ANYTHING Jonas Bro.; watching.
Judging by some comments on a blog site - it may just work because quel surpris, some actually believe the show wasn't just good but actually "great and hilarious". Yeah, I was just thinking that. I'm actually one who thinks the Jonases can act, but this show is so badly written that it doesn't make a difference. Sterling Knight is definitely the best part of SWAC. He just impresses me more and more with each episode.

That's interesting because I think iCarly caters to a very different audience than this show. I think they would be much better off by swapping that around. WOWP would do well against iCarly while JONAS has a better chance against TJVP.

I have to agree with most of the comments here. This show is terrible. I can't even blame the Jonas Brothers. Yeah their acting isn't much to write home about, but the writing is so unfunny even if they were better actors this show would still blow. If it must go on they need to fire the writing staff and stat otherwise other than as a quick cash in I really can't see the point of this. Do they really need the exposure this badly?

I think this is another one of those cases where the PTB don't think they have to work all that hard because the show will be a hit no matter what. And, while I haven't seen the ratings yet, I can't say they're wrong. The show's target audience, namely hardcore JoBro fans, seem to love it.

I liked Keely. Usually, the best friend/kinda love interest of a male lead on these types of shows would be very blond, sweet, and perfect. But Keely, while blond, was kind of a mess, and was shown to be imperfect in many and various ways.
I actually thought of Keely every time JoBros gal pal/stylist was onscreen. I think they are going for a similar vibe with her.

All 21 episodes for the season are already completed and production has ended.
It really wasn't horrible. A Flight of the Conchords for the tween/teen set. Their personalities on the show seemed true to their real selves. (Watch the clip of them playing blindfolded musical chairs on Ellen; Nick is too serious for his own good, Kevin is a bit overexcited/overblown, Joe is the most natural and personable.) Give it few more episodes. (Unless you're a card-carrying Jonas hater, in which case, it doesn't matter if anything changes or gets 'better'.)

I agree with you about Stella being very Keely-like on this show. I hadn't thought of it before, but they are quite similar. I actually liked Stella in the second episode because she seems pretty relaxed. They definitely need to tone down the super fan character, though. It's fine in small doses, but since she's a regular, they need to dial it back a bit.

Pim Diffy was my queen - loved that girl. The other thing I thought Phil of the Future really had going for it, was the chemistry/relationship between Phil and Keely. I rarely see chemistry with the obvious pairings on these Disney shows (saw more chemistry with Miranda and Gordo on Lizzie Mcguire and always hated that he ended up with her) but those two had it in spades and their platonic/though clearly not completely platonic relationship was very well written.
(Unless you're a card-carrying Jonas hater, in which case, it doesn't matter if anything changes or gets 'better'.)
Alright, so admittedly that'd probably be me since my feelings for them range from talentless to completely contrived tools riding on some passable looks. However, I believe I can be unbiased and fairly watch this show. Let's face it, as much as I think Demi Lovato can sing, I thought the first episode of SWAC was awful and she was so grating. However, I can admit that the show has gotten a lot better. So I'll grudgingly give this one or two more episodes but seriously, I'm not holding out much hope for any change.

I'm not a Jonas hater. I was indifferent to them before
Camp Rock, and found them pretty likable in CR. I had doubts about the show but, after seeing the promos and(which put me in mind of the

But, when all was said and done, I just don't think it was very good, and am sure it wouldn't have made it to air if the JBs weren't in it. And I don't think you have to hate the JBs in order to feel that way.
