Full Version: Veronica "Ronnie" Lake: Will We Grow to Love Her?

My take on this character is that she is not very fleshed out. She seems undeveloped. Maybe as the season goes on, we will learn more about her and that will make us care more about the character, but at this point, she just seems like an unnecessary appendage to the core cast, basically someone for Sara to work with.

I also have to agree that the actress does not seem to very good either. I am not familiar with her, so I can't say if she is actually a good actress.

Hopefully if the character sticks around, she will grow on us, like Hodges did. I think most viewers had a negative opinion of Hodges when he first showed up, but once his character was fleshed out, we warmed up to him.

I'd say no (on the will I grow to love her) because really I am not going to give her a chance, IF she stays longer than the 4 episodes. When Jorja is gone I won't be watching CSI as regularly but beyond that she was better this last week but she's the type of character I'm not inclined to like, I have trouble getting past the first annoying impression.

I'm still on the fence with Hodges.

I'm glad you started this thread, I was thinking about doing the same.

I've mentioned in other posts I really dislike the actress playing her (in terms of acting skill). I never thought CSI was really the pinnacle of acting talent (a few cast members aside), but everyone is competent enough that I don't get taken out of the show watching them. The actress playing Ronnie just gives her such a vacant look. When she turned and smiled at Greg as he left after her scene with him in the last episode, it was like watching a little kid in front of the camera who was just told to smile 'real big'. No depth.

I love Hodges, but I never had a problem with his character's personality. You've got a Hodges in every office, and since he seems to be quite good at his job, I like having him around. I give CSI props for putting in a character like Hodges and allowing him to be multidimensional. Of course, I also think Wallace Langham has a lot to do with Hodges being awesome.

I didn't dislike her as much as her first appearance, but I'm still not loving the character. She just seems... too young and naive. I would hope that anyone who made it through college with a degree in science would be a bit more grounded. It's too much like the Holly Gribbs character, with her freakout with the bodies and fetal pigs in jars. I got over the whole fetal pig thing in high school, for goodness sakes! The actress is lovely to look at, but I can't tell anything about her actual acting abilities due to the poor writing of the character

Well, she has a couple more episodes to impress me. Good luck to her.

She just seems to much like a kid for me that I won't trust her investigating a case. She's cute but seems a little to giddy for my liking. I think she was smiling in almost all her scenes.

I like Ronnie. At least so far it's nice to see a female CSI on this show without issues.

Yet, they haven't had a chance to come up with any issues for her yet, I'm sure if she sticks around shell get some.

I think you nailed my problem with her as well. I can get past the stupid questions from her first episode but the stupid ever-present smile irks me. Maybe in a different cast it wouldn't be as irritating but it feels like she's a contestant on that Spike show Murder.

I still feel like she's on a cool summer internship. I don't feel any any particular passion or fascination for forensics -- she could just as easily be at the food co-op.

In "Go to hell", she was really annoying, and her comment about the cops was terrible. In The Case of the Cross-dressing Carp, she was more tolerable, but I still felt like they could just have had Greg move to swing with Sara and voilá (since Swing shift is so autonomous they don't even have supervisors there, and before Sara and Ronnie, they didn't have people there). She just doesn't bring anything to the show. At least Keppler brought something different, but she just...no.

But I think they're doing this on purpose. I think they think "let's make people hate her in her first epidose, then barely tolerate her, and then let's make her grow on them, so when she'll be in peril, they'll be all 'noooo! not Ronnie!!!' "
vikki138
What I guess I don't understand is why they tried to make her so annoying in her very first episode.

The thing with Greg was that he was at least comic relief if he was irritating Grissom, and you often felt Grissom was way too harsh on him. Here, I just found myself agreeing with Sara.

So if they do plan to make her a full-time character, wouldn't a more flattering entrance have been necessary?

Not, of course, that it always works: we had Sofia in a red dress and then stripping and displaying all kinds of sciency knowledge in her first episode, and she was still taken to the cleaners by the majority of fans, so...

I think her sense of wonder/questions were supposed to be endearing. They weren't.

I will give TPTB that they had a hard situation to deal with. No matter who they cast and who the character was, there was still going to be a decent amount of vitriol from a good number of fans because she's new and mary-sueing her way into the team (in some opinions). But they should have expected that, and done a better job of endearing her to fans.

I mean more Sara's reaction to her, though. They had Catherine have an issue with Sara initially because she felt Sara was snooping in the team's business. Sara had an issue with Sofia because she was hittin' on her man. lol.

But even in those cases, all three women would come off as petty alternately, but at the same time all three seemed to have their reasons. Again, I think Sofia was just poorly written and a pointless character, but they did at least try to give her a good entrance and made any problems against her personal.

Sara just seemed to find Ronnie annoying, and I agreed.

Flattering is much less memorable. I found Sara's entrance to be anything but flattering and to this day it still rubs me the wrong way. There are still certain episodes/scenes from the first season that I can't watch without wanting to slap her, especially Crate n Burial and I-15 Murders. For the most part, I've moved past it and I'm ambivalent about her in most episodes while in certain ones, I like her very much. Usually when she's paired with Nick.

If Sara, who is apparently adored by multitudes, can have such an inauspicious beginning, why can't Ronnie?
Ipstenu
Because Sara was so damn cute. "It's me!" and she balls out fronted Cath on being snippy ("Two smart women..."). Ronnie is really like Greg without any of the charm that made you grin and want to introduce him to your younger siblings. Ronnie hasn't shown any of the CSI brilliance, she hasn't figured out something that no one else could, she hasn't shown any insight into something amazing and deep.

She has no 'special.'

Sara has cars, Catherine has people, Grissom has bugs, Brass is just fucking cool, Warrick is beleagured, Nick is normal. We don't NEED another Normal CSI. We're loosing Sara. Give us someone whom Sara can turn into ... mini-Sara! Except not a clone. Just someone who is useful, instead of being Intern Exposition. If I want exposition, I go to Brass. Mmmmm. Love Brass.

Word. Untill this chick does anything besides smile and look cute - "Oh wow! I'm at a crime scene...and now you want me to take a picture?? Is it evidence??" I will continue to tune her out untill she disappears... the sooner the better.

ETA: How do i keep starting new pages??
vikki138
Yeah, but then she'll turn into a Rain Man character who "magically" gets her powers.

I think the only solution right now is to just cut her. I was hoping she was just a co-worker for Sara on days, but it already looks from spoiler pics like she's starting to work with grave.
ShadowyMoon
I don't really mind her. She didn't have a very good introduction but aside from the whole thing about not wanting to question the cops about the homeless man, she seems like a fairly typical overeager new investigator. She's excited about her job, which explains the perpetual smile. Plus, I thought she was pretty cute when she was working with Greg. I can see a crush developing there, which would be a nice way to mirror Greg's old crush on Sara. And I don't think Jessica Lucas is a bad actress. She just hasn't really settled into the role (and may not get a chance to, if she's not signed on for more than her initial 4 episodes) but that's understandable since I think, all told, she's probably had less than 15 minutes of screentime.

So, yeah, for right now she really doesn't bother me and I think there's potential for both the character and the actress. I absolutely hated Sofia when she started and ended up loving her and actually miss her a lot this season. I'm not saying I'll feel the same about Ronnie but I'm willing to give her a shot. I'm also more inclined to be lenient towards new female characters these days because the show deperately needs a better gender balance. With Jorja leaving and Louse bumped down to recurring/guest star status, that leaves Marg as the only female regular against 7 male regulars. I'd like to see Ronnie stick around because she's tolerable and has potential to be likeable, and I'd like to see Mandy and Wendy bumped up to regulars, with perhaps another new female CSI or cop also brought in.

I have to agree with you on some of those things. Ronnie doesn't bother me, she's a little annoying, but I can see past that because she's new and every new character has its flaws. I don't think they cast a good actress, but I don't really think she will have a big role this season, so I don't mind her being there a few episodes. Lets see how she does from now on.

Also, I hate how now there will only be one female as well. That makes it even worst now that its only Catherine, bleh! I think CSI needs a better balance. Maybe Ronnie will surprise everyone. I'm not so sure Ronnie will be able to fill out the void left by Sara and Sofia, but only time will tell!

So is Ronnie off the show?

She hasn't been seen or mentioned in weeks. She's cute; I hope she comes back.
Split Ends
That's her name? Seriously? I've only been paying half attention this season, and that's her name? Wow.
wlk68
I saw Cloverfield this weekend (awesome movie, btw) and Jessica Lucas (aka Ronnie) is in it. She has a fairly big role.

So Ronnie has vanished without explanation.

Pity.

It's still early, just back from the strike and all, CM mentioned wanting her back but I'm hoping against it.

She was on swing shift. The only reason she appeared was so that it would look like someone else worked the shift besides Sara. There's' no reason for character now.
