From
NBCUMV.com:
This week Alison surprises the three teams with news of an exotic getaway, but they quickly discover their “vacation” will be more work than play.
The contestants are faced with temptations they never had to face back on campus, and later square off in a wild challenge unlike any they’ve faced before. Then back on the “Biggest Loser” campus, contestants who lose the weigh-in try to forge alliances before making the difficult decision of who to send home. Trainers Bob Harper, Kim Lyons and Jillian Michaels also star.

I always fail to understand why "this is a game, I need to worry about strategy" seems to translate to "let's eliminate the person who could really help us avoid future eliminations". I know that often it's just an excuse to cover a pre-planned alliance, but still. Annoying.

Whoever it was that said that the Red Team was waterlogging last week was SO right.
And Jim looked awesome in the follow-up.
The rest of the show....eh. It's hard to get too excited about 45 minutes of weigh-ins.

One aspect of tonight's show that I really liked was Jillian's message to her team.
"If you can't practice discipline for one week, how are you going to practice it for the rest of your life?" (Or something similar).
I agree with Jillian here. "Just this one time" is what got them there in the first place.

I always tune out midway through. I think the episodes are just a bit too long. Love how the Black Team totally dominated that balance challenge. But I also love how the Red and Blue team seemed to have fun with it, despite the inability to cross the line.
Jim did look great in the follow-up. Those are pretty much as enjoyable as the entire show for me. I'm so glad that they continue with it despite being kicked off the ranch.

Damn stupid blackout for the past 45 minutes. I lost power right around the time that Julie was weighing in. Any brief recap would be much appreciated.

The ep was too long, by far.
Brief update:
Black team lost the weigh in. The women and Jaz block voted to get rid of Jim. Jim and Bill voted for Isabeau. Jim went home and lost 60 more pounds, putting his total weight loss at 123 pounds. He enjoys spending time with his kids and eating Subway now.
The red team had the highest weight loss, which was nice to see since they haven't seemed to put up the numbers as well as the other teams. Amy finally lost a good amount of weight--10 pounds.
Blue team: Kae continues to do very well for the smallest contestant, and dropped 7 pounds. Most people dropped in the 6-8 pound range, with the exception of Amy and some of the big guys.

Maybe Jillian should have let them have a drink? ;)

I wasn't impressed with Jillian's holier than thou attitude at the weigh in when they were discussing the drinking. "We have a job to do.. set an example.."
Yeah well... the red team did just fine in spite of a team member or two having a drink. They have to be able to function in the real world, and in the real world they have to be able to balance having a drink if they want it. Or whatever else their temptation is. It's possible that the red and blue team consumed more calories than the black team, but sometimes that gives your metabolism a kick in the butt as long as you haven't gone way overboard.
Jillian seemed absolutely crushed that they lost, but it was bound to happen. Maybe it's not a good thing to win the reward challenges.

I don't think that Jillian was being out of line at all. I think that Jillian was trying to bring home the point of discipline, which is something that is required for losing weight...or any other goal. Add to that the competition factor, and I think that her points are valid. She did not not know at the time that they were going to lose the weigh-in, or that having a drink would not screw up the red team's results. Why take the chance? Their bodies are at the point where the weight loss is slowing...at least for now. But you can't know when that is going to occur.
One of the black team's members actually said "we are on vacation; it's time to relax." Not when you are competing against others. That attitude can be dangerous, especially to someone just starting out on the weight-loss journey. I remember losing weight over and over again because "just this once" turned into a runaway train. The contestants have been out in the real world prior to coming to the show. Look at where "just this once" got them.

It makes perfect sense to get rid of a guy who has a rock-solid ally on the team. Like it or not, there IS an element of strategy to it, and the same reason the twins weren't picked for the red and blue teams is the same reason everyone else needs to eliminate them when they have a chance - no way will they ever vote for each other.
The rest of the team is doing okay at weigh-ins...without a clear weakling on the team, it makes sense to consider strategic moves. I think it's too early to eliminate someone solely on the basis of being a threat, but it's also valid to consider your own chances of staying on the ranch as long as possible - not just to win the competition, but to have the most weight-loss help.
(Also, "you're a threat" is a very nice thing to say to someone when you vote them out, and the people on this show are nicer than just about any other show when it comes to voting people out...I don't think that's ever the sole reason anybody gets voted out.)

Loved, loved, loved the moment where Jez mooned the Red and Blue teams as he was being pulled to shore. I also got a kick out of the Red and Blue teams laughing during the challenge. I liked that they weren't all serious and could see the humor in the situation.
I liked the message that this week tried to send. Vacations are fun and can be days/weeks of indulgence, but you can still have fun on vacation and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Sure, have a few drinks but remember to space them out with water and get on the dance floor to burn those calories. Of course, this is from a person who, on her last cruise, was tipsy the second hour on the ship due to her fourth drink. ;-)

I've decided I can't stand the way Alison...... hesitates........ between every............few..............words. Also her sharing about how she felt fat among her fellow actors and she just woke up one day and decided to lose those pesky five pounds or whatever. That just struck me as insensitive and smug. Here are people struggling with real weight issues and she's talking about her experience like she has some idea what they're going through. I don't think I care for her. Otherwise the show was okay, sorry to see Jim go I guess but he didn't seem to need the ranch anyway so it all seemed to work out.

My guess is because they failed to do it with Drama King Matt two seasons ago and again failed to do it with Backstabber Erik last season, and both ended up winning. So they take out the big threats now before they can completely sail through when the individual weeks come.
While I'm not surprised the Black Team lost, I wasn't too keen on Ryan saying it was "only fair" that they lose.

The problem with having one alcoholic drink is that it lowers your inhibitions thus affecting your judgement and alcohol is a depressant. So one drink can mess with your judgement, so another drink, then a salty greasy snack to be chased by a sweet and then a snowball effect. On BL one drink didn't harm because your trainer was there to be your judgement and keep you on track. Would it have been the same without the supervision that was there with the contestants?
Also, some foods are like a drug to some people that makes them lose self control. A some foods are like a trigger to some people to lose control and eat more and more of that food. So it makes sense to avoid that trigger food unless you are in a rigidly controlled environment like the BL.
I was wondering if the bigger numbers for Red and Blue teams had to do with relaxing the hard training and dieting for a week. It seems that I read somewhere of taking a little controlled break actually helps with breaking through a plateau that the body adjusts itself when it knows that it's not in total calorie restriction and breaks the "famine" mode that the body takes with calorie restriction. But I'm not sure.

However, if they really really wanted one, they could have had it with their meal since they were sitting down to dinner. I've tried it and it works.
I've always had trouble with "all or nothing" when it comes to weight loss so I liked Kim's take on the vacation better than Jillian's. You have to learn to make choices - sometimes they're right and sometimes they're wrong - and learn from your mistakes.
The show is toooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo long - will they ever cut it back to 1 hour? Even with 3 teams it's too long.

I did feel pain for the poor Losers. Jamaica? That would be a once in lifetime vacation for me and it would have been really, really hard not to have the full food and drink experience.

This typo in the recap, paraphrasing Jillian, made me laugh out loud.
She says tha tit's been a real struggle, and that it's discouraging that she wants it more than they do.
This episode had so much more potential to be awesome, but it was like half an hour of jamaica shenanigans and an hour of boring weigh-in.
I did like the cut of Bob's team doing yoga and in the background we see black team, and hear Jillian screaming from 50 yards away. This is also the first week that I really noticed the teams looking thinner- especially in their faces.

I agree,
caroline2. At least this early in the game--ISTM that it makes more sense to hold on to the people who consistently pull big numbers, to lessen the likelihood of facing an elimination in any given week. Later on in the game, I can understand going into "biggest threat" mode.
In other news, my 4.5-year-old son seemed to think this was the best episode ever, at least during the Jamaica sequence. He thought that the workouts and the challenge were extremely amusing, and he was narrating what the teams were doing. "The red team has to swim! The black team is in the water!" And he was making comments about the trainers, too: "The blue-team trainer"; "the black-team trainer"; "the red-team trainer." I was a little bit surprised that he'd paid enough attention to the show to realize who the trainers are.

Is it just me, or does Alison look like she's putting on a few pounds as this season goes along? I guess someone had to scarf down those cupcakes after last week.
Oh, and Trainer Kim . . . me likey. More water-events please.
I agree with Jillian. These people have been given a tremendous opportunity with access to professional training and nutritional counseling, and more importantly they've been given the benefit of being taken away from their family and professional obligations so they can focus solely on their health/weight. If they can't stay off the sauce for one week, they don't deserve to be there.
Finally, I agree with canning one of the twins, but I think that points out the inherent problem with casting twins. One or both of them become an easy target, and once one is canned, the team is left with a remaining teammate who can potentially have a huge chip on their shoulder about their brother/sister being voted off.
Oh, did I mention Kim in the bikini? Yum.

I was rather "meh" on this episode, as no one really seemed all that committed to doing anything or going the extra mile. Boo hoo, you're in Jamaica so why can't you be spoiled and take a break? What would their attitude have been had they been at the cushy ranch all this time, then? Jillian summed it up nicely when she said she wanted it more than they did; I think she nailed this season right there. That said, her obsessive-compulsive hatred of all things not stamped with the Jillian seal of approval is grating on me. Her attitude is so black-and-white (the drinks, the fish, the swamp water cupcakes), as opposed to Kim's too-laissez-faire approach. Bob struck the right tone of middle ground--yes, you can and someday you will, but this week please don't. I wish they would have spent more time giving a "navigating the buffet line" lesson instead of those little sips of whine. This show could be so much more useful for viewers if they cut the stupid filler. I miss the funny food and fitness questions at the breaks, too. What happened to those?
Jim looked great! Too bad they didn't dump Julie, though. Not only is her weight loss to date fairly meek compared to the others, her passive aggressive scheming made me want to slap her. I'll vote with you, Jaz, always, but YOU pick the person we should kick off? Grow a spine, woman.
And you're nice, Jaz, but stop your whining. Until your boobs are smaller than those of your female teammates, you should be hitting it HARD.
The water challenge was a hoot, but I bet Phil was hurting badly after all that falling and trying to balance on a bobbing raft with his lousy knees. I felt pretty bad for him, but it was fun to see everyone laughing at themselves goodnaturedly for once.
Yay, yoga! Thanks, Bob, for adding that in as a valid workout. It's so much harder and athletic than people think. I'd buy his yoga DVD, too, if he ever decides to make one.

Jim looks fantastic, but I can't remember if he was the smaller twin or not.
Is that why they thought he was a threat? Or is that both twins are a threat and they had to get rid of one now and Jim just was the lucky winner? So if Black goes back to elimination, Bill might as well start packing now, because the bullseye is still there.
The challenge was hilarious. I must have lost a ton of calories myself just from watching because I was laughing so hard. Especially with Blue's "Bob emphasizes being able to balance, so this'll be easier for us than the other teams"....SPLOOSH! Although after the second dunking, I was wondering "Why don't they pick someone else to go first?" Was that part of the rules?
I don't have a problem with Jillian's outlook on the vacation thing. She's absolutely right, there's plenty of time to indulge/backslide later if they want, but right now they AREN'T on vacation. These people are currently on a show where they have to learn the discipline and willpower now in order to achieve their goal of being slimmer. If at the first sign of a real temptation they forget why and what they're doing, how can they expect that they'll be able to do it in the future?
Obviously they aren't going to say no to themselves about drinking, so as part of their training they need Jillian to do it for them. It is her job to get them in the right mindset, and she's completely justified in being pissed off about getting flak for it.

So my husband set the DVR wrong and we only saw the last half hour, which was of course all weigh ins.
Seriously, why is the show so freaking long???
Just one comment about the elimination...when Allison mentioned that it was the twins' birthday the next day and asked if they always spent them together, wasn't it Bill who said "yes, since we were in the womb"? Dumbass. Yes, you are twins and were in the womb together. But correct me if I'm wrong, you DID NOT celebrate a birthday in there.

I agreed with Jillian. I still don’t get why her team lost, and why Kim’s team, who may have been the most indulgent, won.
Kim's team won because, as others here have speculated, they most likely water-loaded themselves last week when they had immunity in order to make their numbers this week seem more dramatic. Which also explains their pathetic (by TBL standards, anyway) 1-2 lb. losses last week.
I was not a fan of Trainer Kim's teeny bikinis at all. She's got a nice body (a little too muscular, imo, but I'm a woman, I have no idea what men find hot) but I thought she was sending a pretty clear message to her team that SHE could have been there to sun herself and relax, while the rest of them had to suffer through workout after workout in the Caribbean heat. And I've been to Jamaica several times - been to that resort, as a matter of fact! - trust me, it. gets. hot. Kim just grates on me in general, so maybe I'm grasping for reasons to find fault, but her modeling routine pissed me off. I'm underweight - 5'4" and 102 lbs. - and I wouldn't preen around in a bikini if my
job was to train people with weight issues. It's just obnoxious.
Jillian was spot-on with her advice - and her frustration - about the fatties keeping it together for a single week. Jez's outbursts at the buffet were misdirected, disrespectful, and ungracious. If I had moobs like his, I would lay off the damn coronas already. I mean, Jeebus. Let it go, dude.
And wordy mcword to Sami Brady's stupid laments about her perceived "weight issues" relative to her co-stars. I think even
she got embarrassed when she realized that she was preaching about her "struggle" to get from a size 4 to a size 2 in front of people who probably have not worn a size 4 their entire adult lives. She started stammering at one point and sort of lost her train of thought.
Jim looks great! It was great to see his kids all wrapped up his old belt. That was pretty cool, and a 123-lb. total weight loss is just incredible. Go Jim!
Does anyone else think that Julie has a
really long way to go before she even makes a dent in that booty? Baby got back! And it doesn't seem to be going anywhere (yet). Jez - assuming he does well - is going to need some serious skin-removal surgery. He's already sagging all over the place. That can't be comfortable.

In a way the twins did have a birthdate in the womb, they're identical twins, so when the cell divided...Okay, too big of a stretch but the guy just misspoke or overstated for dramatic effect. Something of which this show is extremely fond!
I was underweight my entire life, until I turned forty this year and my body gave me the gift of ten pounds that are impossible to lose even though I work out five times a week. On the upside, whoa, my skin is entirely clear for the first time in my memory so I'll take the ten pounds and quit my bellyaching.
Kim's team won because, as others here have speculated, they most likely water-loaded themselves last week when they had immunity in order to make their numbers this week seem more dramatic. Which also explains their pathetic (by TBL standards, anyway) 1-2 lb. losses last week. MollyZee
I agree. The thing I noticed at last week's dismal weigh-in for the Red Team is that none of them seemed all that devestated to have lost only a single pound in a week of hard work. I guess they must have highly suspected that since their prize was to be revealed at the weigh-in, it was going to be an automatic win.
I haven't commented here before, I felt a little funny about commenting because I know this show is a big inspiration for people trying to lose significant weight. I watch because it is a chance to cheer people on, and feel good for them. However, unlike Allison, I don't kid myself that because I struggle with ten pounds now, I have some frame of reference to what these people are facing. It isn't just about losing weight, it is about finding whatever issue within them, and in their lives that derailed their well being. Five, ten, fifteen vanity pounds is not the same thing by any stretch. I guess I didn't like Allison saying that because whereas I liked her attempt to empathize, it suggested that she really just doesn't have a clue. Her weight struggle never had the potential to kill her, and some of these people are trying to cope with exactly that. Not only that, but people can be incredibly cruel to overweight people, causing them to feel even worse, and overeat even more. When I was underweight, I told myself that people can be just as cruel about that, but I know I was wrong. I knew it even then. Allison was trying to be kind, but what she went through isn't really comparable. I do like her as a host though.
Jez's attitude that he should be able to relax is indicative of how he got to this point. I'm not condemning him, I'm just saying that he still has a mental block in place. Maybe, I don't know, I'm guessing. The time to relax isn't now, or yet. I'm sure they are all tired, and probably grouchy because they are being worked hard, but I agree with Jillian. The contestants are there to do something, the time to relax is after it is done, and even then only occasionally.
I really like Jillian, and my biggest laugh last night was at the prolonged shot of Kim's backside. I couldn't help but laugh because I imagined what Jillian would say or do to the camera person if they'd tried to objectify her in that manner. "I'm here to do a job, and so are you! Your job is NOT to stare at my butt! Your job is to document the progress of the contestants! Now lift that camera over your head two hundred times!"
My favorite team is the black team, but honestly, I wish they'd voted Jez off. Well, actually, no I don't. I think he actually needs to be there, he needs help with this. Truthfully I wish no one was voted off, that the contestants weren't pitted against each other week after week.
Admittedly, that would sort of remove the entire premise of the show so there's no way for it to work.
ETA: I Tivo this show, I don't think there is anyway to watch it in real time. It's too long, and too repetitive.

I'm still not feeling the love for anyone in the competition
I don't know what it is, but nobody is evoking any kind of feelings, good or bad so far. Perhaps Julie stands out as a potential pain in the ass, but I'm finding it hard to even care this season.
Is it just me, or does Alison look like she's putting on a few pounds as this season goes along?
It's not just you. Sitting at the table in Jamaica, I saw it. Perhaps there's something to it when she says that she's constantly battling her weight. Relative to the contestants, she's thin. However, as she said, relative to her soap co-stars, you can see that she has a problem. I feel for her because after seeing her last night, I can see that she has the potential to completely lose the long-term battle if she doesn't keep up the fight.
On the subject of vacation in Jamaica: This is a competition in which you every ounce you gain is relative to every ounce another person loses. If you are really in the game to win, you'll jump over hurdles in order to get to the finish line first. It's time for them to stop thinking that this is real life. If it's real life they wanted, they shouldn't have signed up to get their butts kicked on national television. When the game is done, they can eat cupcakes and wash them down with all the alcoholic beverages they want.

I could not watch this show if I couldn't fast forward through the boring or annoying parts. I can roll with the pace during the first segments, but weigh-in is where I get antsy. I am really interested in the numbers but all the goony reaction shots and repetitions...bleh. And I hate, hate, hate the build-up to the elimination and all the wind up to the uncovering of the name. I mostly motor through that to the end and then resume watching for the "today" segment. I rely on the recaps for the details.
I also enjoyed the water challenge. At first I didn't get why the black team went for short people, and then I had the aha! moment. I don't think the other team members tried the hunch over technique and both Phil and Ryan look pretty tall.
I guess I didn't really mind bikini Kim. By that time I would think the team would be used to her wardrobe...she lives in that sports bra. I did prefer Jillian's outfit, though the hat was weird. I didn't see train engineer, I saw jaunty military. "Reporting for beatings, ma'am!" And my prurient side does not agree with Bob's opting for decency. Ah, well. At least the resort gave him a t-shirt.
Finally, I too call waterloading on the Red team. Boy, I am not looking forward to the first person who pulls that deliberate weight gain one week for advantage later maneuver (still grumbling at Erik).

The product placement with Bob and the little Nabisco Snack packs was really weak and cringe-worthy. And then Neil munching from the little packet on the plane! Like a little boy munching on his "snacky poo"! I mean is it just me or is there something inherently unmanly (childish?) about a big grown man munching on his snack? Does Bob seem the most mediocre he has ever been? I will always like him, but he just seems none-too-enthused this season. As I remember someone else saying, I do think he has the suckiest team of the three, so maybe that is part of the reason I am not as impressed with Bob as I have been in the past?
I don't know if there is a better way to interweave these product placements into the show, but so far they are so cheesy and staged. I think I hate these product placements because they make weightloss a "gimmicky" thing. I think a lot of weightloss, from the pyschological side, involves growing up! There is something pandering and childish about these big food moguls peddling their products to obese people. Bob's attitude is kinda silly and forced when he does this. Even the Subway thing. I mean I know part of coping in the real world is knowing what your options are and such, but I just don't like the way they present this on the show for some reason. I feel like Bob is silently giggling to himself when he presents these products. Or is it just me?

I could not watch this show if I couldn't fast forward through the boring or annoying parts.
Werd. I DVR BFL while I'm watching Beauty and the Geek, so I didn't start watching the playback until a little after 9 p.m. With fast-forwarding through the commercials and the 30 - 45 second "coming-ups" and replays before/after the commercial breaks, I finished watching at just about 10:00 anyway.

But I'm not sure
That could very easily be the case.
I've always had trouble with "all or nothing" when it comes to weight loss so I liked Kim's take on the vacation better than Jillian's. You have to learn to make choices - sometimes they're right and sometimes they're wrong - and learn from your mistakes.
Yeah. Where is a better place to test yourself and possibly screw up... with your trainer right there to help you get back on track.. or after you've left the show and don't have that level of support? Kim's reminder that they would be up at 5:45 training regardless of alcohol consumed might have worked better than Jillian badgering her team.
Jillian has always bugged me with her hard ass approach. They're not going to train for hours every day with her hanging over them screaming when they hit the real world again... a test run maybe isn't a bad idea.

I love this show, but I hate all the conniving and strategy when it comes time to vote people off. I guess that's the reason I don't watch many reality shows. Anyway, I'm all for girl power, and I suppose you have to ally with someone, but I hated how all the girls banded together in an effort to pick off the men. And it put Jez in a really tough spot. He was basically forced to side with them or there would be a tie.
I understand the logic that you guys have mentioned in this thread about picking off one of the twins so that they can't band together later, but I didn't get that impression that the girls did it for that reason. I think they want to get rid of the men no matter what, and they only approached Jez as their tie breaker because they obviously couldn't go to either of the twins. The next time the black team loses a weigh in, they won't need a tie breaker, so they won't need Jez and he could be the one to go. The whole thing reeks of the Kai/Heather/girl whose name I can't remember from last year and I hate it.

This might sound a bit odd, but I wish they had shown how hard it was for some of those contestants (particularly the heavier men and some of the bell-bottomed ladies) to fit into their plane seats. They show clips of the struggles these people endure, and as any of us who have been obese for a long while know, having to get on a plane can be a frightening thought. Heck, enonomy seats aren't wide enough for the average person. So it would have been interesting for them to show the struggles that they have as POS (the euphamism "Airline" uses - Passengers of Size).
As for the challenge, I had two thoughts on it. First of all, I didn't hear them told that they couldn't sit or kneel on the inflatable raft (although they may have been told that off camera). If they weren't told that, why didn't they try it after falling off for the third, fourth, or fifth time? Secondly, why did all three teams choose men to do the first run? Women generally have a lower and better balanced centre of gravity, so it made more sense to me to have one of the females (particulary if they were shorter ones) go first. It wasn't as if they required great strength to pull in the others, so that seemed to make more sense to me. Guess they never thought of it that way.
BTW, why didn't we ladies get equal time and get to see Bob bouncing around in the water in his bathing suit??? I'm just asking...

I have to chime in on the Nabisco 100 calorie pack product anvil....
While they are mostly tasty, portable, and a nice alternative, they are not the holy grail of dieting. If one were only counting calories, the 100 calorie packs would be fine, but once you look at the fat and sugar content, they don't look all that great.
I am doing Weight Watchers right now, and I am allowed 20 points a day... most of the snack packs are 3 points due to their high fat calorie count. That's 15% of my daily intake!
It's all relative I suppose....

Absolutely. I had completely blocked out that product placement memory until reading here, but it was pretty sad. I agree Bob sounded fairly insincere when describing the mighty wonders of Chips Ahoy Crisps or whatever that was. But I did love how he sort of flung the packs down on the table. "Sweet, savory, there!" 100 calories is still 100 calories--that wee little pack is like eating an entire big bag of salad. I was thinking about the Jennie O turkey, too. Turkey is fine, but prepackaged deli meats are loaded with sodium and preservatives no matter how fat-free they are. Not a great choice. And don't get me started on Subway! Is that the best this show can do for sponsors? So far, the only one I can swallow, if you'll pardon that, is the gum. Mmm, gum! Where are Quaker Oats or, I don't know, the Apple Growers of America?

Or maybe they were confused by his moobs? But I agree that he probably sealed his own fate last night as well.

Maybe they figured it would take greater strength for the first person to pull themselves across without an assist from the beach.

Perhaps it had something to do with the other passengers on the plane.
When they showed Neil scarfing down the 100 calorie pack (not one of the twins like someone upthread said), I thought it was Kae next to him and Ryan, and she was reading a book, trying really hard not to be in the shot. Then the next shot showed the other side of the plane where Kae and Nicole were, so obviously there were others on there. (As opposed to Others on the plane.)
