Hi, Warden. Thanks so much for stepping up to the plate. I'm going to answer your second question first, because it seems important to put this out on the table, and let you know how I think.
can a fan of a show be a fair and impartial mod?
I hope so; I think so, too. I've seen it done. It's why I had so much to say,
here. I think I'm being fair in my other forums. If you have a specific concern -- if you see me post something that makes you question whether or not I'm moderating according to my fannish opinions, rather than according to the FAQ, please PM or e-mail me with the details and your concerns.
For what it's worth, I don't think a fan has to love every moment a show ever puts on the air, or that people are bad fans, because they find fault with aspects of a show. TWoP isn't even a fan site. It's a TV site, and praise, analysis, and criticism are equally welcome, as long as posters express their opinions in ways that conform to site rules.
One of the reasons I got rid of the negative opinions thread is that I don't want any opinion ghettos. I don't want people who are dislike the show (or an aspect of it) to feel like they have to go bury their opinions in a dark corner. People are free to express their opinions on any topic in the thread for that topic.
I ask that since that there are people who feel that VM is not the great show that it once was and are wondering if it's okay to express that opinion in a character thread, episode thread or even the meet market without fear of being picked on, warned or reported just for "not liking something".
It's absolutely okay, and invited in all the show/character/actor and other discussion threads (although it wouldn't belong in the Meet Market). Picking on or otherwise being rude
to people is not. I don't care if people think VM was perfect, or think it needs to be tossed into the Lake of Fire for all eternity. What I do care about, is that TWoP posters follow the rules as laid out in the FAQ, and are generally decent and polite to one another.
I'm pretty pragmatic about the show, itself. It's dead, and I can see why, but I'm glad I watched it and would have kept watching if they'd kept making it. For what it's worth, I believe I've reduced old warnings for people who loved and hated the show (and of course, for those in between) at an even rate. It seems to me that I have sent notes and warnings at an even rate, too.
I predict that once the DVD's come out, there will be action in this thread. Stay strong!
Thanks, bfragrant. I'll probably be trying to shut everyone up, huh?
I think it makes the most sense to have Mods that are 'fans' of a show to be the moderator for a particular forum, rather than one that's unfamiliar with the show or its characters. Of course, that makes me feel sorry for the mods of crappy shows like Bionic Woman, etc, so I hope those Mods have shows they actually enjoy to balance them out.
I agree, rowancelest. I've substituted in forums of shows I didn't watch, and although I walked into them with no opinions about the show or its fans, I didn't walk out that way. Just exposure to the message boards is going to give a person some opinions about the show and its fanbase.
I also think it was stated that people can say anything, positive or negative, as long its on topic for the thread and it isn't in violation of the TWoP guidelines?
Yes. Praise it to the heavens, piss all over it, or just talk about it -- that's fine, as long as everyone is good to each other.
Okay, about TV discussions in Meet Market...
Here's the deal: people have been talking TV all along in the Meet Market. I think I've been here since mid-September. I believe (please correct me if I've forgotten) that last week was the only time I had to say anything about TV. You'll notice I didn't edit out those posts. Nobody got in any trouble, either. All I did was give the thread a heads up. When you're starting to get into the plot it's time to move the discussion. If you want to post that you didn't like
Pushing Daisies as much as you liked
Chuck, because
Pushing Daisies was too sweet, whereas
Chuck has more of an edge, that's fine.
Here are some of the things Strega (she's our boss) has told the moderators:
The Meet Market is for coversations that are off-topic anywhere else. Thus, they are not for conversations that have topics. A post or two like "I watched Blah last night and it was awesome; is anyone else watching it?" Fine. But if they get into extended conversations about favorite episodes and seasons and so on, definitely redirect them.
If it's helpful, here's what I told the Buffy posters a few months back:
If you want to post something like, "Hey, I watched (some show) last night and it was (fantastic/shocking/awful)!" that's cool. If you want to say, "I talked about it in detail in (my lj/my blog/the episode thread)," and include a link that's cool, too. If you want to discuss it in detail here because you just don't like using the threads where that discussion would be on topic... well, no. Like I said, the MM threads were created for conversations that would be off-topic anywhere else. Not for conversations that have existing topics that you just don't want to use for some reason.
It's not like this is unprecedented situation with MM threads, so I don't want y'all to feel singled out. But since it's come to my attention, I need to remind you that other shows have their own threads. If you want to discuss other shows, you should use those threads. If that's a burden for some reason, I'm sorry about that, but... we have lots of rules about the forums, and everyone's got to follow them. I can't grant special dispensation to certain groups.
You'll notice that last quote Strega addressing the Buffy forum, which hasn't had a new episode since May of 2003, but still has a forum, rather than just a single thread, much like this show.
Here's a
link to Strega's response to
House posters about this same issue.
House is, of course, still on the air.
I hope those answers address most people's questions. Let's get to your direct ones:
I thought as long as it wasn't "in-depth" discussion of a tv show, it could be discussed in a meet market like "xxxx show is cool. I liked it and will watch it again" versus "xxxx show is cool. It really identifies the growing social concerns currently impacting our nationwide educational system." Plus, would an alternating series of posts of a certain show (with or without spoiler bars) fall under the "heavy discussion" part?
The first example is fine. The second example probably isn't. If you're talking about drug dealers, and you happen to reference
Weeds, you're not out of bounds. If you're talking about drug dealing on
Weeds, you need to take it to the
Weeds forum.
I'm not sure what you mean by an 'alternating series of posts of a certain show'. If a bunch of people are telling another bunch that they love/hate or should/shouldn't watch
Pushing Daisies in the course of light conversation, that's fine. If they get into a discussion about episodes, it's not. And generally speaking, if you need spoiler bars, you probably need to take it out of Meet Market and into the appropriate forum/thread.
I was also wondering how it applies to characters as well. Is in "passing fancy" okay as long as it is not "in-depth" discussion?
Yes.
I hope this helps. Thanks again for asking, Warden.
