Talk about the designer duds here.
whereismycastle
In the one large cast photo, the Jenny character is wearing these Steve Madden flats that are natural canvas with navy polka dots and tassles. I own those in red, paid $10 for them at TJ Maxx. Kinda fitting, since Jenny would be the bargain shopper of the cast.

BTW I think that Taylor Momsen should be wearing fake boobs in the show (and I put this on the fashion thread because I say they count as accessories).
faef
Fake boobs?
No way. She's perfect. She's supposed to be 14!

But in the book, her very big ones are a big part of her character.
TWoP Bayliss
Right. The actress should be wearing fake boobs to more closely resemble the character, who had very real, very large, very ubiquitous breasts which accounted for 90% of her personality.

On the other hand, if you take those away, you get a whole new character to play with. I like boobless Jenny.
hellosunshine24
I have a feeling that Jenny being flat-chested in the show might start to bother me, though... mainly because I'm so used to her with huge boobs in the books. It's like, a huge part of her character in the books and you hear about it quite often. It's a big part of most of her storylines, too.
tennyoaisu
Yeah, Jenny and her Uniboob. It's such a major part of her character -- it's the reason why she's so insecure throughout the series.
whereismycastle
EXACTLY!

I mean, not only can she not afford the couture that her classmates can, but every outfit is a struggle to camoflage her chest. She'd be just another cute, very petite girl if it weren't for the boobs - the are a lot of her personality.
shalia17
See half of me feels sympathy for those who read the books and are gnashing the teeth over the differences from the TV adaption but the other half is sorta "what didja expect". I never read the books, have no intention to but for whatever reason, I only want the show to mimick the book in the most basic/hazy way like character names, general premise, certain attitudes, etc. The show is gonna be it's *own* show and tear apart from the books mythology even more drastically than it has now. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

I like boobless Jenny.

I love the fashion in this show. Especially Serena. But what is with Chuck's scarf love? Because I'm not really feeling it.
Rorikon
I'll offer up that I love boys in scarfs. They're preppy and bohemian at the same time. But I certainly don't love Chuck. His poor scarf must've felt so degraded.
emma675
Hallelujah, in the books Chuck is known for his wacky fashion choices. Someone help me remember, though, did he have a crazy scarf that he wore all the time?
hellosunshine24
No, but he did have a monkey! I wonder if he'll have a monkey in the show, too?

I love all the stuff Blair is wearing, but I REALLY loved Serena's gold sequined dress she wore to the concert. I have been seeing them everywhere, and now I really, really want to go buy one. And does anyone else remember that being on the cover of one of the books? Because I do.. it was a dress pretty much like that, in that exact color. However, she wore the dress with pants, and I probably would just wear it as a dress because I think it's cuter like that.

I don't remember that dress, but wasn't Blair's dress that she tried on but her mom nixed from one of the covers too?
PepSinger
Is this the book? It's Nothing Can Keep Us Together.

ETA: No problem, hellosunshine!
hellosunshine24
Okay, I was actually wrong, it was just a shirt, but here is the cover of the book. I was REALLY off.. I can't believe I thought it was a dress, haha.

ETA: PepSinger, you beat me to it! Thanks!

Here is the gold sequin dress Serena wore, or at least something extremely similar. Ridiculously priced however.

I saw some at Bebe the other day, for less than $100. They had them in silver, too, but I think that gold might look better on me. And they had different styles of the dress, too. So maybe I'll get one from there...
Titus
I thought the long, silvery jacket that Serena wore on the steps on The Met was totally fab!
Fleegull
Serena's dress was by Tory Burch. According to The NY Daily News, the CW will be offering some of the clothes featured in each episode for sale online via its' website.
Mrs Snark
I thought Blair's mom stole the fashion show for me. Does anybody think it's intentional that she is a socialite fashion designer that wears a "uniform" of sorts (white oxford with pearls)? Seems very Diane von Furstenberg to me.
TWoP Bayliss
I thought the same thing.

And Miu could wipe the floor with these girls.
amybworth
Yes, Blair's mother was the fashion high-point!

But she reminds me more of Carolina Herrera — a classic socialite UES designer, who usually wears white oxford shirts with red lipstick. She has a beautiful dark haired daughter, Carolina Jr, who serves as her muse and best advertisement. Sound right?

Mrs Snark
amybworth, I thought about her too!

If this series becomes a hit I wonder what von F and Herrera will think of the similarities? I tend to think they are NOT going to be amused, much like Anna Wintour and the old Devil Wears Prada fiasco.

LOVED Serena's gold sequin top and the black/white trench coat. The thing is, the clothes make her look 25 instead of 17 or whatever.

I love boys in scarves too (but not Chuck's, ew), and in vests (Dan's was very cute)!

Rufus' leather choker thing needs to die, die, die.
atlanta
I have a feeling I'm going to love drooling over the fashion on this show. Yes, the fashion on The OC was cool, but New York is more fashion sensitive than laid back Cali. Give me teen/young-adult versions of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy!!
SassandtheCity
Is Rufus' leather choker supposed to be a callback to the Ryan Atwood choker/man cuff of old?
Hallelujah
SassandtheCity, I was just about to post that. What is it with Josh's characters and those leather accessories?!
CharlieTheGnome
I was completely in love with Serena's leather jacket, the one she wore on the train etc. in the opening scene. Does anyone have ANY idea where I could find one? I swear I've been searching for a good brown leather jacket for years; I can never find one just right.

The CW site has listed some clothes info: http://www.cwtv.com/thecw/style-gossipgirl

Yes! I wondered about that. I guess Rufus is supposed to be honest, a little rough around the edges, and horribly out of place in this world. Leather choker, you speak volumes! -- but still, you need to die!

Speaking of Schwartzian sartorial connections -- Dan, the Seth-esque character, has a bit of his own retro thing going, doesn't he? Seth occasionally looked like he shopped out of grandpa's closet (and not Caleb's!).

I'm actually a big fan of Chuck's outfits so far. Obviously yes, date rapist, but he does have some style. Especially when he was all suited up for Kiss on the Lips, the whole effect was a bit Fred Astaire - the mix of colours and the bow tie.

I also agree that Serena's wardrobe makes girl look old. I'm from Sydney and her first outfit (tan leather jacket, white t and knotted silk scarf) in particular was very yummy mummy dropping into the shops in Double Bay after picking the little darlings up from school.
Juicyhoot
Hey, new poster here. I am really loving this show. I tuned in for the preppy look and I wasn't disappointed. There's nothing in this world quite as sexy as a man in a suit, even if it's a school uniform. Forget Coke, Nate is It!! I do find Chuck hideously ugly, and the scarves do nothing for me.

All the girls look great, although it's hard to believe that Serena is less than thirty, much less twenty. She's got some distinct laugh lines. Her mom could be her (barely) older sister. And whatever they had her in at the beginning made her look way too old to be in high school.

One thing I'm loving is all the cool legwear. I'm so over the bare leg look. I thought Blair's tights/stockings at the first party, with the flower prints, were so elegant. I need some of those.

I have a sixteen year old niece who has a friend with more facial lines than I do and I'm in my 30s. lol! I don't know how, but the friend already has crow's feet and forehead lines. Maybe I'm just a testament of sunscreen wearing? 'Wrinkly' teens do surprisingly exist. Blake better start taking good care of her skin now. Kelly Rutherford does not look old enough to have a teenaged daughter.

Does anyone know where I could buy a navy pea-coat very similar to Nate's in the pilot?

Army/navy supply stores always have them and most any department store will carry a version of this.

Loved all the brunch outfits. I am coveting Serena's dress.
quietone
I loved the lingerie ensemble Blair wore while lounging around.
RazorbladeSmile
Dan was scrupmtious in that jacket with the epaulets and I want it in black! (then again, Dan would be delicious in nothing but sunscreen and a smile)
hellosunshine24
I loved Blair's outfit at brunch. It was fierce.
whereismycastle
Josh & crew are really on top of the meta humor....it's only the 2nd episode and Nate's made a comment about Chuck's stupid scarves.

Also, seeing Blair, in a fabulous little nightie, heels, and sheer robe, standing in front of Serena, in cutoffs and Minnetonkas, just made Blair look 10X classier and Serena look like a hobo. Nice visual there, accomplished through fashion.

Word on all counts (except I want it in brown). Anybody know where it's from?

How exactly is this meta humor and not one guy making fun of his friends clothing choices? Is everytime I make fun of something someone wears considered meta?
toaster pop
Totally agree with everybody's comments about Blair's lingerie ensemble. The fact that she was wearing it so nonchalantly around other people, especially Serena, spoke volumes about her character and it looked amazing!

Dan in his jacket? HOT!

There's a blurb in the Oct. 8 issue of People mag highlighting Serena vs Blair's style. It describes Serena as more bohemian and Blair more old money sophisiticated. It offers some less expensive alternatives to their looks.
Satanic Counsel
I'm also down for Dan's jacket for the brunch, even though I'm much too old for it.
Richyyy
Maybe it marks me as a complete, y'know, guy, but my favourite outfit so far was Blair's basque and matching panties set during the scene where she was trying dresses on while talking to Jenny.

Yum.
MissAnthropy20
I kinda dug the dress that Serena was wearing during the Ivy League kiss-ass thing.. Anyone know who the designer is?
shalia17
Blair is a bit too preppy for me. My personal style is a bit more eclectic like Serena. I need like a full list of the designers who work on her outfits. Find some good inspired looks perhaps...

I was totally digging S' knee high (suede??) boots she was wearing with the school outfit. I was gonna get some but they cost an arm and a leg.

Her dress is by Vena Cava. It was from their spring/summer line.
