Nice choker, Dad.

I like how Rufus has been remodeled on this show but it's a little too Sandy Cohen meets the rocker guy actually.

I would marry Sandy Cohen meets the rocker guy, so that doesn't bother me. Plus, as one of the non-teen viewers, I need at least one guy I can have a crush on without feeling gross. (It's great that Penn Badgley is legal now, but I remember when he wasn't, so: no.) He's maybe not the most original character at this point, but I'm willing to give him a chance.

I just don't see how he's Sandy Cohen at all. No corny jokes, no references to Jewish foodstuffs, no words of wisdom. Just some dude who has some kids and plays in a band. Explain?
grownupgirl
Give me Peter Gallagher's Sandy Cohen over this guy any day!

The title for Rufus's thread should be:

Rufus Humphrey: Hot Rockin' Daddy
Sumik
Too bad they couldn't make him more like Spiers.

THAT would be different.

I have to say he's definitely my eye candy of choice for this show, despite the younger options. I hope he gets a little more to do than just be "the dad". I quite liked his chemistry with Lily, I hope they go places with that, there's definitely potential there.
ChrisWyle
I think he's a little too aware that he's good looking. Agreed, he's trying to stir up banter with Lily, but it almost seems like overkill..
Aunty Mib
It's amusing that the "Immature" adult character-the neverbeen rocker as opposed to the Captains of Industry-is the best parent. He's about the only parent I don't want to slap with a crowbar.

I would like it if he weren't more naive than his children.
CaitMo
I don't understand how Rufus was a semi-famous (or barely famous, whichever) musician in the nineties. Did he have toddler Dan and baby Jenny along with him? They make it seem like Lily was into him when he was in the band, but she would've had Serena at the time. They should say he was in a band in the late eighties to make it logical.

I want to know what crack his estranged wife is smoking because she must be really stooopid to leave Rufus. This dad is all kinds of hot.

I'll fanwank here, but I'd like to see his band make a comeback, make millions and tell those UES snoots to kiss his butt. :)
IsabelPup
I'd do him.

On that note, him being totally hung up on his wife when she's rejected him whole-heartedly enough not even to give their own kids hope, that's kind of unattractive.

But I'd still do him.

Too bad they couldn't make him more like Speirs.

HA! I'd totally watch that show. (And Band of Brothers was crammed to the gills with hot guys, but there was something about Speirs' Dash of Badassitude which sealed my love forever.)

Topic: Not seeing the Sandy Cohen comparisons myself. I do agree that his wife was crazy enough to leave him, though.

BoB is pretty much why I'll watch Matt in anything.

I'm going to fan-wank that when he just had Dan in '91, he was still a rocker, but when he had Jenny in '93, that's when he quit.

As for Serena...well, Lily would have had her in 1991. I'm pretending that 1989 and 1990 were the big years for her groupie days.

Still, it'd be easier to buy all this if the characters were all sophomores who were born in 1992.

Matt is the reason I watch Gossip Girl. I think his relationship with Lily is the most interesting on the show, but then I always liked the "forbidden love" stories. In my opinion just as Lily was Rufus' great love, he is hers. This would explain why she keeps remarrying. Her marriages have not been based on love, but convenience.

Matt has done a great job of making Rufus interesting, when he could have come off as a dull dad. I know this is a show about teens, but I hope they continue to explore the relationship between Rufus and Lily.
Junk and Candy
Whatever happened to Rufus and Bex?
sendtherain
Yeah, man. I was actually kind of interested in them. It makes no sense that he supposedly started dating her and then ditched her the second Lily called with a problem regarding one of her kids...
Junk and Candy
I love Lily and Rufus together, and I can totally imagine him blowing anyone off to talk to Lily.

But I still would have liked to see what happened. And if Lily and Rufus are over now (Please No!!) it'd be cool if Bex was the person Rufus was seeing.
AuntieLizard
I'd like to see Lily deal with seeing Rufus with another woman.
crazydaizy3
I'd like to see Lily deal with seeing Rufus with another woman.

They sort of started that in the episode before this past one, but I think if there was a substantial love/lust in Rufus's life then this would make a GREAT storyline.

Also, I just realized Matt was in Brothers and Sisters! For anyone who watches the show, he was Kitty's fiance when the show first started. I remember thinking he was absolutely gorgeous and had forgotten all about the character, but now he's Rufus and I love him a little more.
Jim Rockford
I was rewatching ATLBCN today and thinking about how Rufus, in my humble view, would have worked better as an 80s new waver rather than a 90s rocker. Caitmo made a great point about how the timeline doesn't really seem to make sense:

I don't understand how Rufus was a semi-famous (or barely famous, whichever) musician in the nineties. Did he have toddler Dan and baby Jenny along with him? They make it seem like Lily was into him when he was in the band, but she would've had Serena at the time. They should say he was in a band in the late eighties to make it logical.

I was picturing a failed/forgotten later 80s new waver, sort of like Hugh Grant's character in Music and Lyrics The timeline is hard to work out for when he was serious rocker and when he became a stay-at-home, married father of two if all of this took place in the 90s. He also just doesn't look like a 90s rocker to me -- he's far more Simon Le Bon than he is Eddie Vedder. I can totally picture him in a poet's shirt, singing a tune with lots of keyboards, wearing some eyeliner, as opposed to a flannel shirt and thermals. Plus the 80s rocker stuff would have played well, with some fun fashion pics of Rufus and Lily back in the day, dresed like Simon Le Bon circa "Notorious..."

Seriously, was Rufus going to abandon his kids leaving only a note... he is the single worst parent in the world.
Gardel
Anybody else got an "Uncle Jesse" vibe when Rufus was strumming his guitar and singing in the last episode?
Trooper6
When Rufus said, "I'm a dad, you can't take that away from me." about the spawn he's never had any connection to. I was was annoyed. How selfish. He isn't that kid's dad. Presumably, that kid has a mom and dad who have raised and loved him all his life. Now they are going to go off and barge into this kid's life? What if the kid doesn't even know he was adopted?

Selfish.
sendtherain
Rufus disgusted me tonight. He was treating Serena so poorly and trying to keep Dan from his girlfriend for either selfish or imaginary incestuous reasons. I was glad that he "forgave" Lily by the end of the episode, but he really does need to learn that the world does not revolve around him.
