She's way closer to being the It Girl than I would have imagined, coming in.
tennyoaisu
Jenny was always my favorite character in the first few novels. The bad girl thing kind of annoyed me -- I'm glad she reverted to her sweeter, more niave self in the It Girl novels.

I'm looking forward to her part in the show, but her boobs are way too small.
yogalites
Despite the obvious glaring differences from the book I feel this character has the most potential on the show. I really think she has the potential to be a very important character and hopefully she will actually be integrated as such and not just a side character.
sapphireprima
but her boobs are way too small.

Yes, the could of gave this girl a water bra or something.

Another thing why did the get rid of the curly brown hair? Are they going to imply thatShe's already begun her Serena worshipping?
yogalites
Are they going to imply thatShe's already begun her Serena worshipping?

Actually from what I've read she's being groomemd to worship Blair. It's really inconsistent.
TWoP Bayliss
It's made pretty clear in the pilot that she worships Serena, and in the second episode Blair decides to become her friend to use her against Serena. I don't see what's inconsistent based on what we know.
Kait1987
I can't believe that the beautiful, grown up looking girl playing Jenny Humphrey is little Cindy Lou Who from The Grinch! From what I've seen of her, I think she's going to be a favorite character of mine.
hellosunshine24
I can't believe Taylor Momsen is only 14. She looks so much older, and her voice makes her sound more mature than a 14 year old.
MethodActor05
I felt really old reading that she was born in 1993...I was born in '85, and I still cannot get used to the idea of there actually being teenagers who were born in the 1990's. Just can't wrap my head around that.

I do feel like the dress thing was fuckin' hilarious...like, she can't just hit up HM or something? Seriously.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! True story fellow '85'er! I am always shocked and appalled when I realize that tiny babies born in '90 are high school seniors!!!

Yeah, and hardcore ditto on the HM thing......I would think that a store bought dress would be more acceptable than one that was homemade! You know, just in case someone had confronted her about it, she could have offhandedly said it was just something she scooped up at HM or something, instead of the very lame answer of, "Oh, this? Yeah, I made it."
Rorikon
I would think someone was really bad ass if she made her own dress for my party; I would think that person was not taking my party seriously if they showed up in (always recognizable) H&M. (This is assuming I'm a Gossip Girl character. In real life, I wear nothing but H&M and F21.)

I also assume that, had Jenny been asked, she would've said she bought her dress at Bendel's.
hellosunshine24
She probably sewed it so it could match the dress she found at Bendel's. Because like someone already said, if they asked where she got her dress, she could just say Bendel's and they would have believed her because it looked so similar to the other dress there. However, if she went to H&M, I think people would have recognized the dress coming from there or would have known it wasn't a dress from Bendel's.

Anyways. I read an article where they interviewed Taylor, and she was very mature.. she said that Penn became like her older brother in real life as they kept working together. I love reading about how casts get along well, it makes me really happy. Because usually if the cast gets along well, that translates on screen, too. That's probably why the Dan/Jenny sister-brother bond is so believable.

Is the actress who plays Jenny also in the first High School Musical? I'm not familiar with the actress at all, but I was re-watching HSM last night and one of the blonde cheerleaders looked an awful lot like Jenny.

I'm a '87, born in mid-July so a new 20, but still it is a very surreal feeling to me as well.
I can't believe Taylor Momsen is only 14. She looks so much older, and her voice makes her sound more mature than a 14 year old.
Totally, sunshine. I felt so guilty after finding her unbelievably gorgeous, especially in these two pics from her IMDb.

I don't see anything on Taylor's IMDb.
hellosunshine24
I think she's gorgeous, too. She also has really, really pretty hair, haha. I really like that second picture you posted of her, but in that first picture, she looks REALLY old.. like, 18 or 19. It's insane!

That would be me - I was born in 1990, and I'm now 17.

I think the first one was for the premiere of a film she's in called Underdog and just a few days after her birthday. The yellow dress one was at the CW Upfronts so mid-May.

I really don't like the pink dress she wore to the Gossip Girl premiere party though. Ick. Way too much makeup as well.
I was born in 1990, and I'm now 17.
My sister's 17 too, but she was born Pearl Harbor Day so she'll be 18 in a few months. Away at her first year of college, aww.

Sept '91! I'm in grade 11 and when I was younger teens on tv seemes all right but now its so noticable how much older they are than all my schoolmates. Jenny seems the closest to looking like she could go to my school.

Wow, thanks... Born in 1991, became a senior this year. But everyone mistakes me for younger than I am.

Amen. I go to an expensive private school, and wearing anything homemade, except for maybe some jewellery, would not do wonders for my reputation. Oh, and I once read this little article in a magazine where some girl had gone shopping at Supre heaps [do you guys have Supre in the US?] and she had stacks of the pink bags you get every time you buy something from there, so she decided to make a dress out of them. The skirt was made from the actual bag bits and the bodice was made from straps. It looked ridiculous and she was very obviously new at sewing, but she thought it was wonderful.

I'm a junior, and speaking as a high schooler, I find it interesting how people think Jenny looks age appropriate, and Serena looks so old. The reason is that most of my classmates (including me) look college-aged, so it's surprising to see how many people think Serena looks too old and Jenny looks her age.

Making a dress herself, she could make as high (or higher) a quality as she could find at Bendel's or any fine designer for about the price of a pricey HM or even some of that I consider pricey Bloomingdales stuff. Her family isn't supposed to be poor, are they? Just "less rich," right? Making a dress would actually be more expensive than going to HM, assuming she was going to make one with high-quality designer materials, so it would look like a high-quality designer dress. You can spend a lot of money on fabric!
Dulcinea815
August 1990', senior in high school. I agree that Jenny looks most like the kinds you'd find in my high school.

Yeah, it's like...people born in the 80's are like, getting phased out as the teenagers. I used to think, "Born in the 1980's equals teenager..." Now it's like the only ones left are the ones born in very late 1987, 1988, and 1989. Kinda weird that we're going overtaken by those 90's born-whippershappers as young adults.

I'm pretty sure that people born in the 1970's probably felt the same way about us...probably still do, as we've overtaken them as the twentysomethings as they turn into the thirtysomething generation.

I mean, in 1993 I was in first grade. It's so weird thinking that the girl playing Jenny was actually born at that time...1993 doesn't feel all that long ago.

I never really got the bitching about how old some of the actors looked in tv dramas, especially if they're only about 5 to 7 years away. Trust me. Go to a high school, then a college, and you won't find that big of a difference. A 17-year old girl really doesn't look that different from a 23-year old.
GirlInBlack
Damn, this girl doesn't look 14! I got a shock when Imdb listed her as being born in 1993!

I'm a 1988 baby, and oh man. We're getting old and now the 90s babies are going to overtake us as the official teenagers. Somehow, 1990 makes me think of like 15-16 year olds, when in actual fact. They're 17 already. Time flies eh.

Moonlighter, I didn't like her pink dress either. It looked too mature for her.
Spaz

Indeed! I was born in 1976 and remember thinking how weird it was in high school when kids born in 1980 entered the school. Now kids born in 1990 are about to graduate from high school, and everyone I babysat as a teenager is out of college.

On topic...I bought Taylor Momsen as a high-school girl, just a very poised one. But she has that undercurrent of apprehension dead-on, like how young teenagers will try to act grown up but at the same time try to do everything just like their friends.

Blake Lively I thought was in her 20s when she did the first "Sisterhood..." movie, so I was surprised to see she's only 20. I think it's her voice more than her looks that makes her seem older, though.
Miss Daisy
Born in August 91, I agree that Jenny is the most age-appropriate looking girl on that show. There's a guy my age who looks about five years older than he is, and my parents always say that he would *never* get carded. (They don't say it to give me ideas or anything - over the summer, some guy at my job expressed his suprise at the fact that a twelve-year-old was allowed to work!) Jenny would get carded. Serena would not. But the books put Serena's beauty on such a pedestal that the people in charge of casting would be hard-pressed to find someone who was young, drop-dead gorgeous, and mature looking.

Oh thank God-- I thought I was the only 70s born one on this thread ('78), and was starting to feel like I should file for my social security card....

I read all these books last year (I'm a middle school teacher, and the Catholic school I worked for last year banned them, throwing the 8th grade girls in my homeroom into a tizzy-- had to see what the fuss was about), and the girl who plays Jenny looks absolutely nothing like the books describe her, whereas they seem to have made the other actors at least mostly match the descriptions given. Since they were such description-heavy books, I was pretty disappointed that a twiggy blong girl was cast as Jenny. She may be a good little actress, but (as previously mentioned) where are the big boobs? The brown curls? The freckles? Couldn't they have at least found an actress with ONE of those three defining characteristics? It seemed a key point in the books that the reason she was accepted was due to her sweet naivete and bubbly personality (the boys liked the gigantic hooters, too), but w/ her stereotypical blond princess looks in the show, seems like she wouldn't even need to bother being nice to be accepted by the in-crowd....
Siren17
I wonder, could Nikki Blonsky play Jenny? Her physical appearance definitely matches Jenny in the books way more than Taylor Momsen does.
Moonlighter
I rewatched the pilot with a friend in the dorm last night and she pretty much had the same reaction as I did. In fact when Jenny appeared on the screen, she was like "Moony, is that the girl you were yammering about on your lj? 'Cause you are so right. She does not look 14, she's way too hot to be 14." It's good to have another common show with RL friends.

Siren, I just looked at Nikki's IMDb and will concede that she might look more like the version of Jenny that the books seem to show her as. (From what I've heard about books, of course, since I haven't read them.)
Hannibal Khan
I think they avoided casting someone that looks like Jenny in the books, because on TV, she would totally overshadow the two female leads.

I for one, know where my eyes would have always been drawn.
hellosunshine24
I'm not too sure about Nikki Blonsky. I always thought Jenny was to be a very small, small girl with large breasts - not a chubby girl. They always talked about how she was so tiny and that's what made her boobs look even bigger than they really were. I could see where you're coming from though, since Nikki is short and a brunette. But I don't think they were going for a chubby girl in the books..
dealan
Knowing how old Taylor really is (and knowing that she was 13 when the pilot was shot) makes me even more squicked out about the Chuck-almost-raping Jenny scene. *shudder*

This is random, but Jenny is kind of the Anakin Skywalker of teenage dramas, isn't she? Will she go over to the dark side? *Dramatic music*
jackiecarr
Since's Jenny's a pretty good seamstress- making that dress and all- and Blair's mom is a fashion designer, I'm speculating that there will be some opportunity for her to intern or apprentice with Mrs.Waldorf at some point in the future. S & B will probably be at odds again and Jenny will be forced to choose between the benefit's of B's friendship and loyalty to Dan and S.

Or the Cady Heron (unless that's redundant). If she ever responds to a compliment with "I know, right?" we'll know she's turned.

I think Jenny looks around 14-16. I just started catching up with the show, does anyone think that Serena's brother has something for Jenny?

I can see this happening. I'd like them together rather than Dan and Serena

I'm really starting to dislike Jenny. She was very bitchy to Dan this week.

I actually think that's where they're going and that it's pretty obvious.. but it could be a while.. since Jenny's all busy climbing the social ladder.

Heading a little OT here, but.....

From EW.com interview with producer Stephanie Savage:

One of the immediate changes I noticed on the show was that the character of Jenny Humphrey (played by Taylor Momsen) doesn't have the big chest that she was best known for in the books.
We made a point of not writing Jenny's large chest into the script because we just felt we would be saddling — quite literally — a young actress with something that would prove to be difficult over time. Either we had to limit our casting pool to young actresses with enormous chests, or we would be asking a 14- or 15-year-old girl to go to work every day with a giant padded bra or chicken cutlets in her bra, and it didn't sit well with either of us. When we met Taylor, we just felt she was so interesting, and she brought another layer to Jenny in the way that she had a kind of intelligence and danger to her, in addition to being naïve and sweet and wanting to be a part of this world. You also felt like she could go All About Eve on Blair's ass any moment.

Back to the regularly schedule Jenny discussion.

She totally just nailed what I like about Jenny.

I haven't read the books*, but what I do think is strange/annoying about this show in relation to Jenny is that she seems to have no friends who are her own age. I'd be willing to let go of this if they at least had her reference someone, or we had a shot of her walking down the hallway with another freshman, but honestly, it's kind of weird for her to be going (or rather, sneaking into and such-- parties filled with juniors/seniors. I just finished high school and I can tell you that if some 14 year old rocked up at a party when we were 17, we'd have made it clear she wasn't welcome even if one of us had invited her. (That makes me sound bitchy, but it's kind of true.)

That tiny nitpick aside, I agree that Taylor Momsen is perfect in this role; not only is it wonderful that they've cast an actual 14 year old to play her own age, she's a 14 year old who can act (comp[ared to others her age, that is).

*sadly, despite being born in '89 I was too old for them by the time they picked up in popularity-- wasn't going to be caught dead reading YA fiction once I turned 14.
MethodActor05
I can kinda believe that Jenny doesn't really have a lot of friends in her own grade- I knew social climbers who only mixed with upperclassmen.

She's screwed though when the '09ers graduate, though. We should see some '11ers.
Kaspangle

Oh, the nostalgia. 09ers. Sigh.

I do think they need to have at least one other friend on the show who is her age. I wonder if that Elise girl will end up being her friend. Even better, they should have someone on the outside of the elite group (not someone like Vanessa though, ugh).
MethodActor05

Heh. If we were going by actual class year instead of the zip code, we'd call them the '06ers, but y'know.

It does seem like there are only juniors+Jenny at this school. We need some '10ers, '08ers, and '11ers representing.

Can somebody please tell me how Taylor Momsen and Dakota Fanning are the same age?

I don't see it happening!

For one thing, true to continuity of all "Queen Bee" characters in books and movies, the Queen Bee is usually mean, bitchy, or just unredeemable in many ways...and even if she's none of those things, she's not exactly Marsha Brady.

Jenny is a born follower/worshiper, and cannot fit the Queen Bee bill for very long, her dumb ass will screw it up and before you know it, Blair is going to be back on the throne, yes, I am on Team Blair!

Mark my words, dumbasses like her get a little bit of power and they pee their pants with glee, so much that they go for too much too soon and wind up having the *womp womp* music follow them around wherever they go...

Oh, agreed. That's just how high school is. If you hang out with juniors and seniors it's most likely because you're on some school team/organization with them, which clearly isn't the case with her. Even after all that's happened with Jenny this year, it's just unrealistic to expect juniors/seniors to want to hang out with her in the first place, and no way would she get invited to parties. And I agreed with a poster upthread that says that she's screwed when all of them graduate in a year.

Jenny just grates to me. I don't find her awesomely evil like Blair, or dynamic, or anything really. Even characters like Nate, who I don't find fascinating, I like due to his relationships with Chuck and Blair. Jenny- I don't really like her dynamic with any of the main characters, to me it feels like she doesn't fit. I would really like her make some friends in her own grade, and when she's finally dethroned (which has to happen) get storylines outside of the UES gang.
kissyboots

I really have to agree. I don't think any character on television has ever annoyed me as much as Jenny does when she gets into her little tantrum modes with her family (i.e. her conversation with Rufus after the failed party). I think the actress is beautiful and has a very fresh face but I just can't stand the sound of her voice. Maybe once she is brought down a little further it won't aggravate me as much, but as for now I want to rip off my own ears whenever she gets worked up.
lyssla
I think the actress plays as a pretty realistic girl her age (i.e., annoying as hell and can't wait for her to get a little perspective/maturity). Even when her line delivery is weak, it reminds me of being her age and saying all kinds of stuff I kind of didn't really mean but would dramatize for effect anyway. (Acting a part in real life?) I still enjoy her scenes largely because of her screen charisma (although it may just be all the shallow talking).
sendtherain
I hadn't cared about Jenny since the Handmaiden's Tale, but Blair Bitch Project made me care about her again. I'm more interested in Asher than her at this point, but good job show for rescuing the one character that was in danger of completely falling off my radar.
ehh311b
Jenny sucks and represents everything tht's wrong with the teenage girls or at least the perception of teenage girls. She's completely falling into the trap of follower and all that peer pressure crap. Truth be told she's put herself in this position that is very likely going to take her down. She's getting all pissy at rufus because SHE wants to hang out with chicks who will push her off a bridge just for fun. I'm pretty sure if she wanted friends she could stay her poor self and hang out with the choir chicks. Her social climbing ways are making me salivate at the thought of her eminate destruction.
