I feel that they're trying to villainize Chuck. All the lines he delivered in the show seemed to be more of someone like a villian where in the novel he was just an ass that no one liked that much.

You know what, I hope they don't try to redeem Chuck at all during the run of the show. Shows like these need a villain and he could function as a good bad guy. As much as I loved her, I was always a little disappointed that they kind of defanged Julie on The OC without ever bringing on a suitable bitch replacement.

This dude is SERIOUSLY channeling James Spader a la "Pretty in Pink." It makes me laugh, because it's so blatant to me. It totally works, though. I'm interested in this character, wondering if he can be redeemed at all. I have to remember that I hated Logan Echolls in the first episode of Veronica Mars, too...

Seriously, except it's almost to the point of caricature. I felt like Spader's character had the potential for growth at the end, since he seemed to comprehend that his friend could actually like a poor girl. Chuck, however, on the first show tries to force himself on two girls in two days and one as blackmail or something. He's going to be pure villain. It might be a bit much even for this set.

Despite that, my prediction is that if/when Chuck gets his obligatory sympathetic-making backstory (I've never read the books), he will be woobified quicker than you can say "Logan Spike Echolls."
This was from the episode thread, but I decided to bring it here because the conversation here seems to be veering in that direction...and although it made me laugh out loud, I’ve got to say, I have to disagree. Logan may have been an ass, but twice over potential rapist? Not even close. Plus, Jason Dohring is hot… this guy, not so much. As far as Spike goes, he did have the whole rape thing happen, but he also felt so guilty about it he went in search of a
soul for crissakes. This guy? Twice in one week, and when he got rightfully decked he voices his want for revenge? I don’t care if his dad does hit him, I don’t think there’s a redemption arc possible to make him that beloved.
I thought it would have been a much better direction for Chuck if: A) He had voluntarily left Serena alone after she resisted in the kitchen, all the better if he had a stupid remark like “your loss”, and B) if Jenny would have gotten the hell out of there when she had the opportunity (don't
drink the drink offered from the scary guy, newbie!). Those plot issues aside, I think Chuck, as a character, is going to be fantastic. Not as good as James Spader (channeling, yes, but he doesn’t have enough hair to flick back, and he’s little too energetic - or is it intense? - to really portray the fantastically lackisdasical “I don’t give a shit” attitude that was Blaine), but he could get there if he tried. I can think of no better high school villain to pattern himself after.

I've got to say that I'm hoping they don't try to tame/redeem/woobify this character. I was actually shocked at how truly, truly creepy they made him, but almost shocked in a good way. Plus I know teens shouldn't be looking to television shows for role models and true-to-life themes, but I still think it sends a really bad message if they "redeem" the horrid date rapist character. That's way too idealistic, and I think teens (and people in general) are just bombarded with these redemption stories, particularly on television, and it does get absorbed even when you don't mean for it to. But the sad truth is, some people are just fucking assholes. I think I'd like for Chuck to remain a fucking asshole, but television characters do have to grow and change, and redemption is the easiest way to do that. Unless they have him go even darker and actually commit some heinous crime, but this is the CW, so I doubt that.
Also, according to the CW cast bio, the actor is a Brit? I really didn't notice an accent. I mean, I did think he had a strange way of speaking, but it came off like a snooty affectation that totally fit the character. Never occurred to me that he was a Brit. I'm kind of impressed.

I completely agree. There's practically nothing they could do to redeem Chuck or make him a sympathetic character in my eyes, so I hope they don't even try. Right now, he's working well as the one-note slimy evil guy. And the actor seems to relish playing him that way.

You're definitely not the only one! But perhaps the two of us are the only two? Hmmmm....I'd be happy either way, personally. Although I prefer a bi Chuck to a gay Chuck at this point. He's provided me with too much "viewing joy" with his female conquests to completely leave that side.

I definitely get the Bi vibe from Chuck. He's like the evil version of Captain Jack: he'll nail anything that moves, he's charming and he's got a sharp mind.
And I definetly get a weird Chuck/Dan vibe. I find it fascinating that Dan is the only person on the entire show who can truly get a rise of Chuck. Chuck's reactions to Dan are just extreme in a way they aren't with anyone else.
Re-watched The Wild Brunch and Chuck literally eye-stalks Dan all through the ep until he can finally get all up in his personal zone, and he's so damn gleeful about Dan pushing him it's insane.
It should be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Okay, show. If you don't want me to see the Chuck/Nate or Chuck/Dan possibilities, stop showing it to me! Don't be a tease.
As for Chuck last night, dude might be screwed up, but he's a damn good friend. (Which kind of makes me a bit sad, 'cause I was holding off for a Blair/Chuck... thing. Eh, guess her losing her v card to him in a case of twisted irony or karma are shot. Oh, well.) And I could understand all of where he was coming from, despite how obnoxious it sounded, and he had a good point about Nate and his future.
I also like that, like Blair, he's more focused and he seems to know what he wants in life. Or, at least, what he definately doesn't want. Also? I love how one kid on TV finally realizes how damn lucky they are to be born with the opportunities they have. Do they have a whole lot of crap on their shoulders? Yeah. But they're still damn lucky.

Huh. Interesting. For the first time, I was getting a bit of an ambiguous sexuality vibe from Nate when that old friend of his came on to the scene. If you watch Nate's eyes, there's a spark there that he's never had with any of the female leads. I'm sure I wasn't just imagining it...

You know, I usually love the "bad boy" and/or asshole guy on any given show, from Jordan Catalano up through Logan Echolls and Alex Karev and lately Tim Riggins, but I find Chuck pretty much repulsive. I think the actor is doing a terrific job, but I don't find him attractive at all and I just...for me, there's no coming back from attempted rape, much less twice in one episode. If they do try and redeem him, I can pretty much guarantee I won't enjoy it.

I agree with you for the most part, although I think Chuck's age makes him more potentially redeemable than, say, a forty-year-old (or peroxided vampire) attempted rapist would be. I don't want him completely redeemed, but I do think the one-note Sebastian Valmont routine will start to get dull after a while. I would like to see the writers attempt eventually to strike a balance for Chuck between, on the one hand, the deliciously cold amorality we're seeing now and, on the other, a more sympathetic side, perhaps one that emerges only under very specific situations and/or with certain people.
I should clarify that I'm not a person who wants all my villains to have shades of gray; I just feel that it would be more interesting in this particular case.

Well, fuck me, most of my original post didn't make sense. Anyway, isn't Chuck's father supposed to have some kind of intimidating hold over his son? One spoiler did say that he's the only guy that can put the fear of god in Chuck. That's interesting,
enjoyallison. I'd like to see that. Chuck is like a little dog that needs to be whacked in the nose with a rolled-up newspaper sometimes, and it'd be cool to see someone that he actually fears and respects. Someone to put a crack in the cool exterior and deflate his ego a bit. I think Nathan has some level of indirect control over him in the sense that Chuck will give up, well, a hella big wad of cash-- his most prized possessions-- so that Nate doesn't get his ass handed to him. But it'd be cool to see
his dad and their interaction nonetheless.

I definitely get a bi vibe from Chuck- and I think it makes him totally delicious! My only objection is the Hollywood tendency to make evil/unlikeable characters bisexual- we don't need another stereotype. That aside, I loved that Chuck grudgingly respected Jenny Humphrey for totally playing him. The devil mask was awesome! I also think he is a really good friend to Nate and a great judge of character- he knew that what's-his-name was full of it and came to Nate's rescue just in time. Not happy about the date rape part but Jenny owning him was sweet! Love Serena and Blair, but we need more Chuck!!!

The way the show's been written it seems like he's not supposed to be redeemable. And it would be too hard for the writers to redeem him because what he did was unredeemable. I'm glad Jenny got her revenge though.

I got the impression that Jenny's "revenge" was their attempt to begin Chuck's redeeming by letting her have her "revenge" from it and in a way that induces humour as to attempt to lighten the issue.

That's so true. So sad, but so true.
Y'know, honestly, I never really got the impression that he's ever actually raped someone, but maybe this is just my naivette and hope seeping through. It almost seems like girls want to have sex with him and he never had to take it to extremes. I could be beyond wrong, though, but I doubt Serena would even want to be assosiated with him if she heard any rumors about him raping someone. I just think he's infamous for having lots and lots and lots of sex and then not talking to the girl afterwards.
While I certainly don't find Ed hot, I find Chuck to have a certain something that makes me want to jump him, especially with his messy hair. Of course, rewatching the pilot, this feeling makes me feel dirty and vomity.

I think that the question of whether or not Chuck would have actually raped Serena or Jenny (and whether or not he's raped anyone else) is less relevant than his choice in sexual partners (or victims, as the case may be). What really strikes me about the character are the women we've seen him target. He obviously hoped that the combination of Serena's drinking and the incredibly damaging information he was holding over her head would equal sex. Jenny caught his attention because he knew that she was young, inexperienced and vulnerable. When she refused his advances, he attempted to liquor her up. In 1x02, he has sex with three of his father's employees, and we see him hold this over their heads when he promises to put in a good word for them. The unspoken implications are pretty disturbing; if they hadn't slept with him, would he have gotten them fired? And he literally offered their services to Nate without so much as a word to them.
Even with Blair, Chuck encourages her to use sex to cement her relationship with Nate. And he suggests that Blair "repay" him for his help digging up dirt on Serena with sex, albeit in a (debatably) playful manner. Chuck's notions about sex are cynical and dangerous. I'm sure some of his misconceptions have to do with his father and his father's array of disposable lady friends. But still! Chuck is crazy.
And, siiigh, he is probably my second favorite character. I hate myself and fail at feminism, etc. But really, is it my fault that he gets all the best lines?
Also! Rewatching the pilot, I noticed that Chuck talked about filching his mom's Paxil and how his
parents wouldn't like knowing that the hotel
they'd bought was serving alcohol to minors. It sounds like the writers developed Chuck's backstory and the Bart/Lilly/Rufus triangle after the pilot was picked up. What's the deal in the books?

This is my problem exactly. Chuck is my second favorite character and yet the mini-feminist in me is crying out.
I do have to say, though, that Chuck is very invested in power. I think he uses power in sex, business, friendships, family, ect. It might be partly because of how he was raised and partly because of where he was raised.
I think that's why find his interactions with Blair so interesting. She's also, more or less, invested in power and using it over others, though to less dangerous degrees. If I would ever see Chuck in a successful relationship, I think it would be with someone like Blair (versus someone like Nate), who wouldn't let him push them around.

I must agree with you two. Chuck is my second favorite character also - and it is a very close second behind Serena. The most sad thing is that he was my favorite character through the first two episodes and only because his part is not as prevalent in the later episodes that I've grown more attached to Serena. What can I say? He's a wonderfully manipulative man (boy?) and he absolutely gets the best lines. I'm immensely attracted.
