Show and/or cast mentions in the media:
Spotlight on fall castingMembers of the family include the billionaire patriarch (Donald Sutherland) and his posh wife (Jill Clayburgh); an attorney general (Billy Baldwin) and his transgender girlfriend (Candis Cayne); a nasty Episcopal man of the cloth (Glenn Fitzgerald), hiding an illegitimate son; a thrice-married socialite (The Shield's Natalie Zea); a suicidal celebutante (The O.C.'s Samaire Armstrong); and a club kid (Nip/Tuck's Seth Gabel). Starting in Episode 4, Blair Underwood will appear as Darling archnemesis Simon Elder.
Wright is especially excited about the casting of Cayne, and he says the network is totally behind it. "She becomes one of the most sensible people on the show," he says. "I'm really proud that we get to take a person who's made a bold choice in terms of an alternative lifestyle and make them not just an onlooker or part of a joke but actually give the difference that they represent a real voice in the show."
ABC gets its hands on some Dirty Sexy MoneyUnfortunately, despite such first-class actors as Sutherland and Clayburgh as the top Darlings, the family comes across as a comic book roman à clef, with each child representing some form of bad behavior you've read about in the tabloids. They're too studiously larger-than-life, while Krause is somehow smaller, a drab presence on the fringe when he needs to be holding the center.
Great title, though. We'll see if that's enough.

Thanks, tribema. I'd venture a guess that the fine-tuning the series has undergone is perhaps related to what USA Today says of Peter Krause's peripheral role. I'll be curious to see if other reviews pick up on that.

There's already been discussion of "reworking" the series after the first few episodes, something ABC is known to do.
Ausiello had it in his report:
Multiple sources confirm that production on ABC's highly touted family drama Dirty Sexy Money shut down for at least eight days {after the 5th episode wrapped} as producers do a little "fine tuning."
And of course there is TWOP's own extra
interview with Candis Cayne, well worth reading.
The Wall St. Journal takes issue with the portrayal of the rich in DSM.
Sept. 9, Lower Hudson News has a
long interview with Greg Berlanti, producer of DSM.

Is DSM really the most buzzed new show, as I've read in a few places? Has anyone seen any stats to this effect? I had no trouble believing it last year with S60, but this seems a bit more dubious. Somehow, the playing field seems more level, with Chuck and Private Practice and Pushing Daisies and whatnot.

The network has put a lot of creative effort intro promoting it, as in the banner stunt over Paris Hilton's house (after Ms. Hilton was released from jail the first time, they had a plane fly by with a banner reading "We love you Paris -- The Darlings." They've since repeated the stunt with variations elsewhere, as well as running the gossip ads). The producer is getting a lot of buzz for having 3 shows on the air at once (he's also the producer of Brothers and Sisters).
I agree with you that Pushing Daisies has more critics' buzz, but in terms of marketing, DSM is def. in the high end group.
Here's a
Forbes magazine interview with an ABC rep on network promotion efforts that specifically mentions DSM.
That article indicates that it's ABC that's doing most of the buzz push for this season, and it has both DSM and Pushing Daisies.

The
Sept. 12 Hollywood Exclusive fall preview calls Pushing Daisies and DSM the two "surefire hits" of the Fall. Contains details not included in most of the generic press release fall preview pieces, so I think they've actually watched the pilot.
(This is a wire service feed, so it will show up in a lot of newspapers, but this is the original source.)Zap2It.com names DSM
one of its 5 best new shows of the fall.
ABC has pretty well cornered the market on the primetime soap in recent seasons, and its latest foray into sudsy territory, "Dirty Sexy Money," should further increase its lock on the genre. Simply put, "Dirty Sexy Money" is a gas to watch, showcasing bad behavior and outlandish situations to spare.

Good review from
the Washington PostThe tone, however, is more sardonic and the characters more wittily conceived than on those soaps of yore that tried to pass themselves off as serious drama. Peter Krause, who impressed many a viewer as the principal nut in HBO's "Six Feet Under," leads a glitteringly impressive ensemble cast, which includes Donald Sutherland and Jill Clayburgh doing the patriarch-matriarch polka.

According to Interbridge.com, here are some upcoming talk show appearances for the DSM cast. These schedules are usually iffy, so take them with a grain of salt*.
Samaire Armstrong: Jimmy Kimmel Live – Thursday Sept 20th
Peter Krause: Live with Regis and Kelly – Tuesday Sept 25th
(Hope this is the right thread for these....)
ETA: * For example, another source shows SA's Jimmy Kimmel appearance as Sept 21st.The official JKL site still shows it on the 20th though

Interview with Candis Cayne after the Emmys, includes a nice photo of Baldwin and Cayne from the Advocate's 40th anniversary party.
She says Baldwin couldn’t be nicer. “He is so amazing,” she says. “So sweet and generous and open to this whole new world. He’s just really giving and made me feel really comfortable.”
Well, they better be comfortable with each other, because Cayne and Baldwin do have some steamy moments together. “There are a lot of love scenes,” Cayne says with a laugh.
So, how does Baldwin rate as a kisser? “Well, it’s an acting kiss,” she says with another laugh. “For acting kisses, he’s great.”
Edited to add:September 23,
long article in the New York Post describing an on set visit. Snippets about various cast members and some of the pilot changes.
And
The New York Times lists just three television shows in
The Week Ahead column for Sept. 23rd: Dancing with the Stars, an HBO documentary, and DSM. Interesting.

Here are a couple of new articles/interviews with Peter Krause.
This one includes some info on the production shut down/reshoots:
We were going to take a hiatus and let the writers catch up and then we discovered that, based upon some work we did after the second episode, we wanted to go back and retool episode number two
....
So what actually happened?
We found that we struck a tone, and the style for the show in episodes three and four was really working and there were things in episode two which needed to change to fit in with the show that we're developing and finding.
.....
There were certain story elements that needed to be more grounded than they were during the initial version of episode two. We don't want the audience to have a difficult time taking our characters seriously
This second one is more about Krause, and why he took the role on DSM, instead of on another new series, or a film role as Nancy Drew’s dad. Who knew?

Oct. 8 article from Newsweek now online:
it's the Darlings that best capture the Zeitgeist. We watch them for an hour without finding out the source of their affluence, because it really doesn't matter. Our interest in wealthy families isn't just the wealth—it's the dysfunction that the wealth creates. "The unattractive parts of these people's lives have been systematically marketed to us by a culture that likes selling a feeling of superiority to people who are doing without a lot," Wright says. There's so much more information available to us about the Hiltons than there ever was about the Rockefellers, thanks to blogs, "Access: Hollywood" and ill-advised Facebook posts. Therein lies the brilliance of the title "Dirty Sexy Money": our wealthy families are poured through a filter, sifting out all the voyeuristic pleasures—the dirt, the sex and the tragicomedy—which get served to us on a silver platter.

Here are links to a couple of interviews with Peter Krause (is anyone else in the cast doing press?)
This one hints at things people have been speculating about in some of the threads:
TV Guide interviewTV Guide: ......In what other ways, going forward, might the show push the envelope?
Krause: Gosh, I don't want to give anything away, but there are a number of things. Suffice it to say that Letitia Darling (Clayburgh) had an affair with Nick's father Dutch for 40 years... so there is the chance that some of those kids might not be Tripp's.
and this includes comments about Nick's motivations:
NY Daily NewsIt isn't a simple story where Nick takes the job just for the $10 million he can give to charity," Krause said of his character's difficult decision to fill the void his dad left behind. "There's all sorts of things going on. There's the unconsciousness desire to be close to Karen [Darling, who he had a relationship with when he was a teen]. This guilt-fueled desire to find out if Tripp [Darling] killed his father. And of course, his feelings about Letitia [Darling, who he discovers had an affair with his father]."
I have to admit, I hadn't thought about Nick's relationship with Letitia...that's got to be an uncomfortable, but intriguing, situation for both of these characters.
Edited to fix links

Are You Ready For Some Football?
Published October 5th, 2007 in promos | No Comments »
That’s right, football! On Monday’s edition of ESPN’s NFL Countdown, the cast of Dirty Sexy Money will offer a unique perspective on the Cowboys at Bills Monday Night Football matchup. The spot includes a cameo by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Do you think Juliet will predict the number of sacks for each team? Or does the Rev. Brian have some holy insight into the game?

That ESPN promo is a hoot! Two things, though: I can never catch what Karen mutters about Jeremy after Jeremy's "No one ever told me this!" and before Karen's "You know, it's been years since I've been in a locker room." And Tripp: "We ought to call them the Buffalo Weeds"? Is that what he said? I don't get it.

Yes, I believe it was Buffalo Wings.
And, Rockville, I think it's this
Jeremy: "No one ever told me this!"
Karen: "It was an impulse buy." Then she starts gushing about Tony Romo.
I thought it was funny that Patrick had a lime in his beer, that the maids delivered a pizza on a silver platter, that Tripp was writing in his orange journal, and that Karen excitedly patted the couch to indicate Nick should come sit next to her (where's Freddy?).... oh, and I loved Jeremy's little chant "Do it, do it, do it".
Jeremy: "Nick, this is football. It's no fun to watch unless you own one of the teams"
Nick: "I-I don't even know how to respond to that" Ha!
I'm pretty sure that spending time commenting on details of this little promo is an indication that I'm way ready for another new episode.
