TWoP Pembleton
Hello all! I'm the new moderator for this section. Don't worry! Kim is still your recapper, and she may even stop in from time to time as a poster; I'm just taking over moderating duties.

Any questions or concerns can be directed to me via PM or by posting in this thread. I'll be checking the boards a few times a day. You probably won't notice a huge difference for the most part, but I just wanted you to know where to direct your questions. Carry on!
TWoP Pembleton
Hi everyone -

Just a note as we get closer to the new season. It's entirely possible that the announcement of who is appearing will come out when I am not online. I know, shocking. And I know many of you will be excited to start threads for each individual celeb, which is great.

All I ask is that you name the threads as such: "Firstname Lastname: Funny Subtitle" A perfect example is the Maks thread: "Maksim Chmerkovsky: From Russia with Love".

It's just easier for new people to find the right thread when the name is first. I'll be editing any old thread titles to meet this criteria as I come across them.

Thanks for your help and for being such a great group of posters! As always, PM me if you have any concerns or questions.
TWoP Pembleton
Just wanted to let you know that, now that the official announcement has been made, I split off a new thread to discuss your thoughts/feelings on the contestants as a group.

As stated above, anyone is also free to make threads for individual contestants -- please follow the model of name first and then clever description (or you can skip the clever description if you can't think of anything). Thanks.

Are there enough topics that we can divide into a general gabbery subforum and a judges/stars/guest performers subforum? I find it's getting cumbersome to wade through the performers and pros to get to some of the more general topics...
TWoP Pembleton
Not my decision, but I will pass it on to the HoP. Generally, shows that get weecaps get one subforum with multiple threads, shows that get recaps get multiple subforums, and shows that aren't covered get one thread. Imagine what it was like when this show just had one thread (i.e. prior to January '07)?

Also, as more people get eliminated, the number of active threads tends to die down, so keep that in mind. This week is about as bad as it will get.

Thanks. I'm thinking of So You Think You Can Dance, which is weecapped, but is admittedly crazy busy with threads (I am a happy contributor to that problem) and has 3 subforums.

Thanks for passing on the request!

I know on other forums (like American Idol), we've been told not to discuss DialIdol. It keeps coming up in spoilers and speculation here, even though some of us have explained why it means nothing.

Is it worth a moratorium on DialIdol here, too?
TWoP Pembleton
I will if it becomes a problem. I've only seen it pop up in that one thread, and there were more posts explaining why it's useless than people talking about it. It will probably die out, but if it continues to be a problem, I might change my tune. I don't like to have a bunch of very specific rules if it can be avoided; it makes posters too nervous about posting and makes moderating more difficult.
missmaisydaisy
Is there a reason why the "results show" does not open until half an hour after the show has ended when the actual show threads open immediately when the show ends?
TWoP Pembleton
It was supposed to open at 10PM Eastern. It didn't? Someone posted in it at 10:01.
missmaisydaisy
The results show ends at 9:30 p.m. and the thread doesn't open until 10 p.m. -- thus my question is why the 1/2 hour delay?
TWoP Pembleton
missmaisydaisy: I'm not sure what part of the country/world you are in, but in the Eastern time zone in the US (which is the standard for this site), the results show ends at 10 PM. (Actually, this week it's 10:02 PM) Let me know if you can find a source that says differently.
missmaisydaisy
TwoP Pembleton, I am in the Eastern time zone (New York City) and it runs from 9 to 9:30 here...
TryingHarder
Isn't the results show an hour long? It is here.
tip and fall
Yeah, I'm on the East Coast (New York City as well) and the results show was an hour long last week. Don't know about this week -- maybe TPTB finally decided to cut down on the filler.
EagerContrarian
According to the schedule here, Monday's show this week is 8/7c to 9:30/8:30c and Tuesday's show is 9/8c to 10/9c.
TWoP Pembleton
Yeah, the results show ends at 10 according to every source I've seen. Sorry, missmaisydaisy. If you can show me a link that says differently, I will take it into consideration.
TWoP Pembleton
Just a note that I merged the Ringer thread with the Grassy Knoll thread, since people were already talking about ringers in that thread.
SD Dude
I hope this is the right thread to ask a general question about this DWTs forum, as I know it would technically be off-topic in any of the actual show threads, but. . .can someone inform we what is being referring to when posters often reference "the scary boards"? If it's all that scary I might wish to check it out myself and try for a fright.
ByTheWay
I think the "scary boards" are the message boards on the ABC website. However, the last time I was there (a couple of seasons ago), they are only open once the celebrities are announced to about a week after the finale. I don't know if that policy holds true today. They're considered scary because they seem to be lightly monitored and posters can get quite rabid. I only lurked but I think "scary" is the right adjective :).
TWoP Pembleton
And I wish people would stop talking about them that way -- we would prefer if people don't discuss other forums, because unfortunately what can happen si that people from the other forums find out, and come over here itching for a fight, and it's bad news all around.

I'm not faulting anyone for asking the question -- I'm just saying for future reference, I'd appreciate if people just said, "On another board I read" or something like that.
ByTheWay
My apologies. It was from that board that I found this one so I understand and agree with your concern.
TWoP Pembleton
When the new celebrities are announced tonight, feel free to go ahead and make individual threads for them. I personally prefer the thread title to be just the name of the celeb, but if you want to add a clever/funny tagline, just make sure you put the celebrity name FIRST. For example -- TWOP Pembleton: Anal Moderator.

If duplicate threads get created, I'll just delete one, and please don't take it personally if yours gets deleted. I'll try to be in here after Dance Wars airs to oversee, and if any threads don't get started, I'll start them.

Thanks!
loveisthedrug
Can we also start a thread where we can talk about all the season 6 couples in general? Or should we keep that to the speculation thread?
TWoP Pembleton
You can start a Season 6 in general thread. We had one for season 5, although it didn't get a lot of traffic. But it might, at least until the episodes start. I'll start it right now.
tappinbeats
Good idea

Can you please select a tagline for Jason, Monica and Mario? You did say you preferred just the celeb names, but all the rest (I think) have a tagline. It makes it look like these guys aren't as important, IMO. Or maybe it's just me being OCD.

There are suggestions in the Jason thread, but I'm not sure about the others.

I'm not great at these but I thought Jason Taylor: Miami Nice

Monica Seles: Tango, Anyone?
TWoP Pembleton
I just take the suggestions that seem to have consensus from the celebrity thread. There didn't seem to be a consensus in the threads you mentioned. If you want to go into those threads and get people to voice an opinion, feel free, and I will change the thread title.

I found a youtube channel that has all DWTS rehearsal and media clips. Thought some posters may want to know about it in case they missed a clip as they were posted on different threads. It is not my channel or anything. Is it okay to put that link in the media thread?
TWoP Pembleton
It's fine -- we assume that the major networks are aware of YouTube and if they don't want their footage posted, they can get it yanked pretty quickly. So if they let it stand, they must be okay with it, and thus we're okay with it.

Hi everyone and welcome to the new season! I'm really excited to both weecap the show and read your comments here. Just a few things as we will probably have an influx of new posters starting tonight.
  • Please try to refrain from posts that basically sound like your live thoughts on the show as it aired. If you have a window open and just type your thoughts as the show airs, and then hit submit at the end of the show, it's no different than posting while the episode is on, and there's a reason we lock the threads until the end of the show. Those type of "list" posts are really boring to read later. It's much more interesting and a much better contribution to the conversation if you just post some initial overall thoughts, see what others have to say, and then respond. Especially in the beginning with such a huge amount of couples, no one wants to read your immediate reaction to each couple ("Wow, I can't believe they did that! Whoa, what an amazing spin!") after the fact.
  • Many of you already have favorite celebs/pros, and many of you will have favorites after this week's episodes. That's awesome, and we want to provide a space for you to celebrate your favorites and explain why you disliked others. Please just keep in mind that other posters may not like your favorite, and that is not an attack on you personally. Roll with it.
  • In seasons past, we have sometimes had a problem with posters getting a little too explicit in their discussions of their favorite dancers' body parts. I'm no prude, but I don't want to read your opinion on someone's "buns" or "package". It's a double-standard because many people would be offended if posters talked about one of the lady's rack or whatever. Keep it PG, please, or stick it in a blog.
  • As always, attack the post and not the poster, and refrain from commenting on what "these boards" or "these forums" or "this thread" thinks. Just state your own opinion without talking about "What's with all the X love/hate?" or "I don't know why everyone thinks X is awesome." That just makes people defensive, and it's more a discussion of the boards than a discussion of the dances.
  • In a similar vein, please refrain from making remarks about other forums. In the past, that has caused forum wars, which are boring and non-productive.
  • Stay on topic. Read the thread title. Is your post about that? No? Then it belongs in another thread.
I know it may not sound like it from the above post, but I really want us to have fun and an interesting discussion. That's why I'm laying out the ground rules now and hopefully I won't have to issue reminders as the season goes on. As always, PM me or post here if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks!
Strega
Hey folks -- We're setting up subforums for the show. Sorry for the short notice! If a thread vanishes on you in the next few minutes it's because we're moving them into their new homes; it shouldn't take long so just hang tight. I'll edit this again when we're done.

And: done. Until Pembleton finds whatever I missed, heh.
sweetpd7
With so many threads and posting going on, I wondered why DWTS didn't have subforums. I'm so glad ya'll decided to do this. It will make finding and accessing topics and threads much easier. Bravo!
TWoP Pembleton
I wanted to post some clarification on what I meant by "list" posts because I think there has been some misunderstanding. This is a list post:
I thought the first couple was awesome! Don't know what the judges were thinking with their scores.

The second couple was okay, but their form was horrible. And what was up with that music? Ugh.

The third couple...I don't know what to say. Let's hope they get voted off this week.

The fourth couple really surprised me! Lots of hip action and pointed toes. Someone's been practicing!

Except that they're usually much longer and go into much more detail.

My whole point with this is that, in seasons past, often the first two or three pages of the thread consists of people just listing each couple and a reaction, and then after three pages, the actual discussion begins. We require people to read the thread before posting, and it's tough to do that when there are multiple long, long posts early on in the thread. This is especially true for people not on the East coast.

I'd like the actual discussion to begin when the show ends, and I know from people's PMs that many of you agree with me. And some of you don't. Feel free to continue sending me PMs if you feel strongly one way or the other.

Of course you should feel free to express your opinions on individual couples. That's the whole point. You just don't need to express every opinion you have in your first post in the thread. We've got a whole week (usually) between performances. Let's save something for later on in the week.

I hope that explains things a bit better, but as always, feel free to post here or PM me with questions.
Woodrose
I have really enjoyed reading the episode threads each week, for all seasons of DWTS. The TWOP episode threads are the best on the web!

I enjoy reading posts that are a list of the couples who danced, with a short paragraph of reaction to each performance. I don't find them boring at all.

I will do my best to follow the rules, of course. You're the boss. But I'd like to express my opinion that there was nothing broken and no fixes needed. And I'm not really understanding what's OK and what's not according to the new rules.
TWoP Pembleton
Thanks for your feedback. I will take it into consideration. See my post above for an example of what I'm trying to prevent, based on feedback from other posters before the season began, and my own observations.
Woodrose
I did read your post before I made my comment. It is not at all clear to me what the new rules are.
TWoP Pembleton
Let me try again, if I'm not being clear: Try not to do list posts, where you just give each couple's name and then a paragraph or so about your immediate reaction -- these often read like people typed them out while watching the show and then posted the second the show ended.

Will you get a warning for these types of posts? No. Will you get banned for these types of posts? Absolutely not. I've sent notes to some people as a reminder, more because I thought they probably didn't see my posts above before the show aired.

This is a discussion forum. Think of it like a cocktail party. When having a discussion, you don't stand there and give a stirring oratory for fifteen minutes. You say a little bit, then let the other people say something, and then respond to it. That hasn't been happening on the episode threads, especially the first day or so after an episode airs.

Short version: Try to avoid these types of posts. But don't be afraid to just post away. Worst case scenario is that I'll send you a note that says, "Hey, that was kind of list-y."
Artemis
Think of it like a cocktail party. When having a discussion, you don't stand there and give a stirring oratory for fifteen minutes.

What? So that's why no one invites me to cocktail parties.

Seriously, I totally get the no-list thing, because it's in pretty much every TWoP FAQ I've ever read. You don't do bullet-point posts for other shows, and this one shouldn't be any different just because of the set-up of the show.

But that actually has nothing to do with my question. I'm wondering about Dial Idol. I've seen it brought up a few different places here, and I know that on the AI board it is not allowed to be discussed on the main board but only in the diversions sub-forum. Would it be OK to start a thread for Dial Idol discussion? Or should it go in the spoilers thread?
TWoP Pembleton
Good question. It hasn't been a big problem on these forums (as much as it was on the Idol forums).

For now, it's okay to discuss Dial Idol in regular thread without spoiler tags, because it hasn't been shown to be 100% accurate (and is sometimes way off, especially in the early going). But I'll consult with the other mods and let you know if that changes.
ByTheWay
Hi Pem,

A silly question. Why are the new threads labeled Performance #3 and not Performance #2?
TWoP Pembleton
Because it's the third performance show? I kind of wondered how to name them when I made them.

Now that you mention it, I think I'm going to change it. I was giddy with Easter chocolate when I did that.
ByTheWay
Hi Pem,

Sorry to be a pain in the tush but shouldn't the new thread titles be "Performance #3"? :o)
TWoP Pembleton
Yeah, but then it doesn't match Results #2. They effed me up by putting two performances before the 1st results show.

So I changed the first week's show to be all Performance #1 (Men, Women, Everyone) and Results #1 and now we're back on track.

I realize it's convoluted but I like the performance # and results # to match because I'm weird like that. But trust that I did put a lot of (probably too much) thought into it.
klm1
Sorry to be a stickler about this but it IS confusing. Given the way the threads are labeled, the performance and results #'s can still match with a minor change.
Performance #1: Men
Performance #1: Women
Performance #2: Everyone
Performance #1 & 2: Results
Performance #3
Performance #3: Results
Performance #4
Performance #4: Results etc.

Yeah, I have some time on my hands.
TWoP Pembleton
Okay, I changed it back. You convinced me!
TWoP Pembleton
Please take note of Strega's recent announcement. The gist is that the colors of these forums might change in the next few days, but everything else will stay the same, so rest easy.
TWoP Pembleton
Hi all -- I'm going on vacation starting...right about now, so TWoP Mars will be modding these forums in the meantime. Please PM her or post here if you have any modding questions and I'll post here again when I return.
ByTheWay
Hi Pem,

Welcome back from your well-deserved vacation! I was wondering - should a Season Seven Spoilers thread be created? There's already a possible contestant - Warren Sapp but the information was posted in the Season Six thread. Just wanted to keep things neat. :o)
TWoP Pembleton
I think Warren Sapp is still just a rumor at the moment (i.e. ABC hasn't confirmed it), but I will start a Season Seven Spoilers thread as those will start coming out soon.
TWoP Pembleton
Hey y'all. Only three months later, and it's time for some more time off. I'm going to be gone the next two weeks -- Mars will be handling week one and Sun will be handling week two. See you on the flip side!
