TWoP Mars
Hey everyone! I have been moderating this forum for a few days now, and I got the word that I'll be the official moderator, so I figured I should introduce myself. I'm TWoP Mars (as in the sheriff of Neptune).

I haven't been watching "John From Cincinnati" yet, but I have all of the episodes in my TiVo and I do plan to catch up soon -- especially now that I'm moderating and need to understand this crazy philosophy that you all are speaking about.

Also, I'm not sure how adding new topics has been handled in the past, but for now let's discuss ideas for new topics in this thread before opening a new thread (unless it's something obvious like a character thread).

First thing you should do if you have questions, of course, is read the site FAQ. After that, feel free to ask questions here.
Lucille

I thought Prettyeyes had a great thread suggestion:

Given all the deep philosophical theories about this show, another suggested thread could be called: "Deeper Than the Ocean: JFC Philosophy 101."
TWoP Mars
After reading this board for several days, I think that's a great thread idea. Go ahead and start one.

I locked the cookbook thread. Could you all let me know if it should be reopened? I don't know enough (yet!) to know if there's a burning desire for such a thread.

Since the thread has had 79 viewings since I opened it this morning, I think that fact demonstrates sufficient interest. This can go in all sorts of directions--Ramon's a cook, and Mitch makes a mean poultice!

Of course, I am biased, as I opened the thread. Come on, give a gal a chance! ;-)
Fisher King
I haven't contributed to it yet but the cookbook thread seems like a good idea. It's smart, witty and pertains directly to the show. I don't understand the haste in shutting it down.
TWoP Mars
I'll reopen it. But, Fisher King, it wasn't "haste." I just wanted to make sure it was a thread people would use before it was opened. Now that we have this thread, we'll be able to discuss new threads before opening them. That's the only reason: timing.

I'll reopen it.

Thanks Fisher King, and PWoP Mars!

I'd enjoy an "Ask Freddy" thread, like "Ask Bummer Dan" on the old Deadwood board. I don't know whether there's a large enough group for this show to keep it lively.
Fisher King
Thanks for reopening the cookbook thread, Mars. With 4 new episodes remaining and the renewal of the show yet unannounced, I can see the hesitance in starting too many threads.
The "Ask Bummer Dan" thread on the Deadwood forum was a delight there and a similar one here would be fun. A philosophy thread would most definitely give an area to express ideas and interpretations which are already being discussed in the episode threads. Plus, during the upcoming hiatus, that thread would most likely be the most active as people ponder and rewatch until (hopefully) season 2.
TWoP Mars
I'm cool with the "Ask..." thread and the philosophy thread. Anyone who wants to may open those, no sweat.

I don't mind opening new threads as long as they'll get used, and I can tell just from what I've read so far that the philosophy one will. And the Ask... idea should be fun. So, open away.
thatguy01
Can we start a thread to discuss the cancellation? "I'd rather be watching Deadwood anyway: Thoughts on the end of JFC"
Mr. Sobell
Can we start a thread to discuss the cancellation?

Don't say I never gave you nothin'
thatguy01
I like the title of the thread. My first idea was, "Mr Sobell Gets His Wish"
Mr. Sobell
My first idea was, "Mr Sobell Gets His Wish"

That thread would be titled "It All Makes Sense to Me Now."

Seriously though, I've never asked that the show be cancelled. I hope David Milch gets the chance to make his point. I would like him to make it more quickly, though.
TWoP Mars
Sorry I wasn't around to help out, but thank you Mr. Sobell for stepping in and starting the thread. I think it's a good one to have, certainly.
Pallas429
Hey, Mars.

On the Deadwood forum we also had a thread for mock-epitaphs, derived from Greatest Quotes. Say, for Seth Bullock: "I LIE BENEATH YOU, A MARRIED MAN" and for Alma, "I AM HAPPY TO LEAVE YOUR COMPANY." Given all the givens about how "John" will soon be gone, maybe it's time to establish such a thread, in merry in memoriam?
TWoP Mars
Feel free to open that.

Honestly, I'm going to be pretty amenable to opening pretty much any new threads. When I first started, I didn't realize how easy this forum would be, so I erred on the side of caution. Now, I know, though. And I trust you guys.

In other words, don't feel like you have to ask me to start a thread. (Obviously, I can close or delete a thread if it's problematic, but I don't think that's likely.)
Pallas429
"I'd rather I didn't!"

But because I did, can you correct the title of the thread from, "Just Because We're Beng Stupid" to, "Just Because We're Being Stupid"?

This forum is much too smart and snarky to imagine that the typo was intentional.
TWoP Mars
OK, but I still don't get that thread name. I also wanted to tell you all that TWoP is trying to be more consistent in its naming of threads so we are going to be going with:

Topic: Whimsical Comment (Awesome Quotes: "I've Got My Eye on You")

instead of

Whimsical Comment: Topic ("I've Got My Eye on You": Awesome Quotes)

So, if you could try to follow that convention when you name new threads, I'd really appreciate it. It makes it easier for newbies (and even longtime posters) to find things quickly. I'll be changing our current threads over to that style over the coming days. But don't worry, I won't change the names ... just the order of the names.

Thanks, guys!

I don't have Showtime, but this week i was in a hotel that did and i finally got to see this. I see now that your writing has shielded me from the full chaos of this show. Still, it would have been a lot more interesting if you had informed us from the beginning that Shaun looks like a Hanson.
Lucille
I think JFC's venerable creator deserves his own thread.

David Milch: Our Father, Whose Art's in IB.

Please, post some suggestions!

Thanks, Mars! I'll think I'll wait a bit; hoping others have some thread title ideas.

(I removed the first one 'cause it was lame.)
TWoP Mars
Go for it. Great idea!
Lucille
Well, I guess my thread title won! ;) A sign of little interest, I'm afraid. But I will go for it, since he deserves his own thread. Thanks, Mars!
TeresaDee
Mars, how long will this forum be kept active?? I want to play with my friends as long as possible :)
TWoP Mars
I'm not sure, but I'd guess it will close sometime after the finale recap goes up.
TeresaDee
Thanks Mars--If you can possibly give us a heads up when you can be more specific, it would be most appreciated!
Lucille
A JFC thread can be started in the Drama Subforums, TDee. Of course, it'll only be the one thread, but it's better than nothing!
TeresaDee
Thanks for the reminder, Lucille--we must do it when the time comes!

IIRC when Glark sends them to PH'd land he usually transfers the existing thread there. Typically there's also an announcement in the general announcement area.
TWoP Mars
Puds38 is right. Glark most likely will send it to PH, create a new thread, and post an announcement. I probably won't know it's going to happen before it does, so sorry that I can't give you an ETA.
Lucille

Excellent. Thanks, guys!
Puds38
FYI the main announcement area is here.
Fisher King
I'm guessing this will move to PH and be archived pretty soon, so I just wanted to say "thank you" to Mars for being tolerant and gracious in allowing us to open new threads and by contributing some great info to some of them. Also to Mr. Sobell for taking the lumps from some on the chin regarding the recaps. I'm sure it's a thankless job sometimes.

There are so many posters here whose comments have made JFC much more special and enlightening. I know I will (and do) see many of you on the other forums and threads and that's always a treat.
The six degrees of TWoP is a very cool thing.

Thanks. 'preciate it. My reward is bringing laughter to dozens.
thatguy01
I'd thank Mr Sobell, but he's a poopy head.

:-P
Puds38
So far I've been on two shows recapped by the ever so pleasant Mr. Sobell: Top Design & JFC. Thanks for making things a bit more enjoyable. I hope we meet again under less *headdesk* inducing circumstances.
soonie
I appreciate that his recaps seem to identify all the things I thought were important. It takes a good eye and a good skills with language to do that well. My thanks, Mr Sobell!

Ditto x 10

Normally, I like to read recaps that jive with my opinion. (Who doesn't??) But Mr. Sobell told it like it was, even though we could tell he wasn't a fan of this show. That's okay! That's what TWoP is all about and why I love it! Thanks for hanging in there, Mr Sobell! You probably feel good you don't have to do this again. ;-)

Mr. Sobell

Oh, you made my day! "Bringing laughter to dozens." I'm sure you brought much more than to a few dozens.

I want to claim number 9 in that dozen, although I think there are many more ahead of me. :-)

. . . .Some things about John From Cincinnati I liked, other things I did not. Oh the plus side of the ledger was the acting -- Brian Van Holt and Ed O'Neill in particular. The dialogue, as you might expect, from a Milch-helmed show, was lyrical, and certain imagery was truly breathtaking <snip> Part of the problem is that the themes of the show -- once you managed to wade through all the hoo-doo and mysticism -- were fairly ordinary. People feel better when they belong to part of a larger community. It is better to be part of some sort of family than not to be. We'd do a much better job understanding each other if we actually stopped and listened to what the other person was saying.

I don't much cotton to the notion that if you found the narrative approach of John From Cincinnati somewhat dense and unapproachable that the problem was somehow with you -- that you either have to appreciate every ambiguous utterance from John and company or you're a mouth-breathing simpleton who should just go back to watching the Full House <snip> I wouldn't exactly say that The Wire spoon-feeds its viewers, though advancers of the "if you don't like John From Cincinnati, you obviously hate challenging television" school of thought are arguing precisely that. That's a bullshit argument, quite honestly, and I'm glad I won't have to hear it anymore.

And I'm also glad that HBO gave us a season of John From Cincinnati, believe it or not. Yeah, it wasn't my cup of tea, but you don't wind up with memorable shows by playing it safe. Whatever darts I may toss John From Cincinnati's way, it certainly took some chances. That not every one paid off is almost beside the point.
Thanks Mr. Sobell for providing a balanced viewpoint and for your generous words (we could all tell you didn't like this one) in the final act . . . and of course for all the hours of top shelf TWoP style hilarity that proceeded it. (Didn't know where else to post this.)
