I think there's enough Ed O'Neill love to start this.
Poor, brave, frightened Bill. It's hard not to root for a hero who always must assault his own front door first.

I got my fish-eye on Zippy's head-bob maneuver.

My favorite character, hands down.
Milch talked a little bit about the Bill Jacks character in this
NYT piece.
The conscience of the pilot, a wizened character named Bill, is modeled after Mr. Milch’s best friend, Bill Clark, a retired New York police detective who is never far from Mr. Milch’s side. The role will be held down by Ed O’Neill, who will be the moral center of the series and the dramatic collective Mr. Milch is trying to build.
“We are going to be doing a story that is on HBO and there are these endearing characters. It is about surfing, but some of the characters levitate and as the story complicates itself, my faith begins with looking at my friend,” Mr. Milch said, gesturing toward Mr. O’Neill.

Cool. Bill Clark was a technical advisor for NYPD Blue who eventually was a co-executive producer.

If we could turn this into the Zippy and Bill Show, with special appearances by upbeat Morrissey, Luke Perry, Agent Daniels, and the Deadwood alumni, I'd be glad to watch another season of this show. Hell, we can even keep Kai and watch Greyson Fletcher surf and skate. But can we ditch the rest of the Yosts? Puhleeze?

I'm with you, Kiarnit. I don't need the Deadwood alumni; just give me Zippy and Bill, and maybe the occasional hapless victim upon whom Bill can inflict his insanity. Bill is how I get through an episode when John disappoints.
BTW, love the subtitle of this thread!

Thought it was great when Bill was reading his dealing-with-grief book and bouncing his ideas off of Zippy.
What's going on with Bill's stairs? He looked like we was 20-feet high when Butchie yelled upstairs. Then, Bill stayed at the stairs and did not utilize the room upstairs... I don't really understand.

I'm thinking that something major happened upstairs regarding Lois, also that John will help Bill to face it and deal.
