Is anyone as excited about this show as I am? No? How many of you are having watch parties--it seems MADE for it.
boomersmommy
I can't wait. It looks like fun. I love to see people not knowing the lyrics and trying to sing the song (like I've been known to do).
The Masses
Looks awful.

So far this show is silly. I don't see this becoming a hit.
EduardoDinero
Hate.This.Crap.

this could not be any more fake if it tried. You are telling me that everyone who was "randomly" chosen by Joey The Fat.One wasn't the least bit nervous, dressed appropriately, weren't awkward in any way, and could all somewhat sing. No way.

This has slick, Hollywood editing written all over it.
radiochik
This show was just awful. and I had been really looking forward to it. I usually like Joey Fatone but not here. Way too cheesy, even for him. I doubt I'll watch this again. Hopefully the other lyrics show on Fox will be better. bleah.
Ty
I liked it. A lot.

There, I said it.
Averett
I'll join you, Ty. I LOVED it! Perfect summer fluff. I about died when they played Cold Hearted Snake.
JohnR
If the Fox version of this show is half as bad, it still won't be worth watching.

Everything did seem very fake about this show, from the "random" selection of contestants, to the MIDI music from the awful studio band.

The 1st round is unfair to those who are last in line, as the first in line has more chances to get to the round of 4.

One of the choruses of "Venus" DOES start with "Well", IDIOTS.

I guess the good thing about this show that there is plenty of "The Soup" fodder thanks to Joey Fatone. Not to mention, "IT'S THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!!!!" Blech. Give me back my 30 minutes.
twogoods
Well, I liked it. It was totally cheesy good fun! Summer fluff at its best.

Joey seemed very natural and the contestants were fun.

I did not know the Blondie song, but every other song was pretty easy.

I'll watch next week.

Well, I almost agree with you, Eduardo, but there wasn't anything slick about it as far as I could tell.

This was teh suck.
EduardoDinero
All right, so it was an ATTEMPT at being slick and just ending up slimy.
daisycat71
I enjoyed it. Felt sorry for the woman who added "well" to Venus and got called out. I remember "well," but that was the original Shocking Blue version, not Bananrama.
Mean Dean
This was fun stupidity. There's really nothing to it, but you can play along at home, it moves fast, and it has good energy. So many game shows these days are slow and ponderous. This certainly wasn't.

They should stop penalizing for words like "you know" and "well," though. That's a little too harsh.

I'm sure they didn't actually randomly pick the contestants out of the crowd, but that doesn't bother me.

"THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!!!" was hilarious.
quack
I wasn't going to watch this, but unfortunately got sucked in and sang along for the next half hour. I know I'd completely freeze and freak out if I ever became a contestant on something like this, but I'm freaking AWESOME playing from the privacy of my living room!

This is, of course, with the exception of "All-Star," because my friends spent so much time mocking it when it first came out that I honestly didn't know the second half of the chorus. All I could remember was "hey now, you're a porn star, get your clothes off, get laid."
Ace of Spades
All I could remember was "hey now, you're a porn star, get your clothes off, get laid."

Funny you should say because that's all that went through my head too.

I liked it too. Usually I'm pretty good with lyrics to songs but word for word is difficult. It was fun. I found it entertaining.
isiscloud
Except for Joey Fatone who was obviously reading from cards, the show was kind of fun. Missed more lyrics than I care to admit, but it was ok. The singers only OK, but it's odd not hearing the songs does by the original group.

"get Laid" is always my lyric, not "get Paid."
steph716
I really liked this show! I thought it was alot of fun. Cheesy, but fun. It will be interesting to see how the Fox show compares.
brickley dane
I liked it too~ It was too fun singing cheese with my family. I thought Joey was pretty calm compared to DWTS. He seemed like a very natural host.
GoldberryWaits
I won't lie and say it's a great show that will stand the test of time and run forever until Joey Fatone finally retires in 2042 or anything, but it was a good show to watch with my 2-1/2-year-old daughter.

And I personally think I would rock at this game.
Wayward
Did anyone else notice the blond female singer with the band? She looked like Deanna from Rock Star: INXS.
SecretSquirrel
So our watch party was lots of fun. I can't see watching it just for kicks by myself, but it's a great group of friends show. We plan to make it a regular thing. Also, did anyone else feel like they kind of made the bonus round easy on purpose?
isiscloud
Yeah, I thought it was pretty easy and on purpose. You want at least the first person to win a decent amount of money so you keep on watching. I wonder if they'll keep it up.
marmaladesix

Yes! And I've been trying to figure out if it really was her, but I can't find any info. Anyone?

Yep. It moved fast, the outros were fun, and it was fun to sing along. I'll watch again.

I hadn't heard the "porn star" version of All-Star -- got to pass that around!
Jersette
My question is, how many singers DID they have up there? It was like this big revolving door of people.... among them, the Pat Benatar wannabe, the requisite Aretha/Whitney wannabe, some biker guy and the creepiest looking singer I've ever seen since David Byrne. We counted seven singers in the credits. And the dancers? Oy.

It all looked very very staged to me. I've never seen so many hopped up people in my life. They all seemed like clones of the 'perfect' contestant.

And apparently I am totally out of their demographic. "Joy to the World" must have been their idea of a really moldy oldie..because that was the most 'classic' of the songs, unless you count the original "Venus". Speaking of, I do agree with previous posters-- 'well' and 'you know' and 'oh' shouldn't count against them. It's like an interpretation thing rather than a lyric screw up. Plus said maroons last night were so hyper, they were just making the most of their face time. Maybe they didn't make the cut for the stable of "Singing Bee Singers" and got on the pilot instead.

That said, I'm watching Fox's version. Compare, contrast and dump 'em both, probably.
etain
Pffft. They asked softball questions. I want to see someone get quizzed on "We Didn't Start The Fire" or "It's The End Of The World As We Know It" or "One Week."
chewingkebabs
Yeah, I'm not liking the disqualifications on "well" and "you know," etc.

The contestants sometimes sang better than the band singers. And yeah, there were a LOT of them. Dancing With The Stars made do with three.
GirlGoneMild
Yep, that was Deanna. I participated in several run-thrus of this show from the start of the entire process. She's very cool and VERY talented. It was killing me that I could not place her until the final day of the run-thru, but when it hit me, several of us were like, "Ooooooohhhhhh, that's where I know her from". All the singers were fantastic, but the band kind of blew.

It's kind of interesting to see what the actual "rules" are that they came up with, Totally different from the original concept.
iMissEthan
What was the original concept?
GirlGoneMild
The original concept had a group of 25 people hand picked to participate at that start. Those 25 would go one at a time and get an easy song to "fill in the blank", just one word. Those who got it right would move on. Get it wrong and bye-bye. Then the people who had answered correctly would go against each other two at a time in another "fill in the blank", but with more of the song to fill in. Whoever buzzed in first correctly would move on to the next and final round. The last round had the people who passed round 2 playing against each other in a sort of version of what they have now. They would sinig the entire chorus and keep going at it until there was one left standing.

There were other variations as well ,like a volley-sing round where 2 people would sing, oh let's say "Piano Man" because it's what I had to sing, and every so often the music would stop and you'd fill in the next line and then the music would start again but then your competitor would fill in the next line, back and forth forever.

Personally, I still think it could use some work, but such is life. I know the guy who won last night and he was a very cool guy, indeed.
cutecouple
This was OK, but I would have preferred to see the version GirlGoneMild described. Nice singers though.
blackwing
I thought it was very enjoyable. I had fun singing along with the lyrics and seeing if I could get it.

Surprisingly, I did not hate Joey Fatone. He looked like he was having just as much fun as the contestants.

I want to see someone get quizzed on "We Didn't Start The Fire"
I think I'd actually do better with that song. It has lyrics that don't repeat and are very distinctive. If I was on this show, I'd probably be trying to figure out where in a particular song they'd elected to start and I'd probably get confused.
LunaNegra

Gee, could you mean how all the "randomly selected" contestants were all sitting in the very convienent aisle seats?

This is like a reverse "Name that Tune", the original musical game show.

Or how they all remembered to hold up their mics while speaking or singing? I bet that if the six contestants were really chosen at random they would be nervous and at least one of them would need to be reminded to hold up the mic. Of course, that line of thought only works if you ignore the fact that they all had mics clipped to their shirts as well as the ones in their hands.
mcmaenza
I missed the premiere but caught it on the replay last night. It did remind me of "Name That Tune" - something I watched a lot as a kid in the 70's.

One nitpick: Joey needs to come with a new response to the question section of where you live and what you do. Every person he said "nice" in response. It got annoying after he did it for all four players. Gee, Joey, can you be a bit more original?
portergirl99
I watched this last night with my boyfriend and his 14 year old son and we were howling we were laughing so hard! In between the first contestant (Just Jack!) and Joey Fat One's "Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice!" we just could not stop laughing. Don't get me wrong, I love the enthusiasm but the cheeze factor was through the roof. The Final Countdown was classic! Oh man, I'll watch this again just for the unintentional comedic aspect.

The guy who won did seem cool. Bonus -- we now know what Carlton Renfroe will look like at 45!
hny312
I also thought the show was extremely cheezy, but still fairly enjoyable. I also thought it was going to be harder than it actually was. I didn't know all the answers, but I still thought it was going to be more difficult. Some stuff was extremely easy, that it almost wasn't any fun. I really wanted to see people mess up a bunch of lyrics, and that didn't really happen.
jhlipton
I watched Don't Forget the Lyrics, and definitely prefer Singing Bee. Yeah, it's cheesy (Mmmmmm, cheese) but it's fast and it's fun. I'll probably watch both, but SB has the lead for now.
curemode
Hey! The black male contestant (sorry, forgot his name) that got eliminated was accused of adding an extra "well" to "Sweet Home Alabama" but he did no such thing. I have it on tape and watched it 3 times and there was no "well" said. Unless they're doing some sort of creative editing to purposely confuse us, the judges screwed up. Someone review their tape and tell me I'm wrong.

Also, I watched the show fast forward style, over the commercials AND the host's banter, and I swear I finished the whole thing in like 9 minutes. It was awesome.
jonathanacohen
Here I thought the alternate version was that contestants would compete for the chance to slap Joey Fatone.
SanLynn

I agree. I caught a little of both and I much prefer SB, even though I want to slap Joey Fatone on general principal.

I just watched on the Saturday replay and replayed it on my DVR and while I didn't here "well" either, he definitely added something. Were the Lyrics supposed to be "Oh Lord, I'm comin home to you?" Because if so, yes he was screwed.

However if the lyrics are just "Lord, I'm coming home to you" then he was rightfully ejected. I couldn't tell if Joey just added the "Oh Lord" to his I'm sorry on purpose or because it was supposed to be in the lyrics.
chewingkebabs
Yes, Singing Bee at least is fast. I hate the new breed of game shows like Deal or No Deal or 5th Grader where they take forever to reveal the (incredibly easy) answers. It shouldn't have took 2 episodes for one contestant.

That said, they are both horrible shows. But I will keep watching both. Yes, I am sad.
bendyb
I swear I've seen tonight's contestant "Lori" on Ballroom Bootcamp, but the episode guides I've found don't list her name. Arrrrrrgh.
bubblebut
I tuned into the show because I love karaoke, but after watching the debacle tonight I am no longer interested. The contestant at the end made me want to kill myself. I had to restrain myself from chucking something at the TV just so I wouldn't have to see her dancing off beat while making goofy faces.
Kilby
I liked the new fill-in-the-blank game, but this show is no longer fun to watch. The overly-strict judging, such as ruling someone incorrect for not including "but" in "but don't tell my heart," is like someone at a party who constantly corrects unimportant parts of conversation. Also, the tiebreaker they used tonight is a candidate for worst tiebreaker in game show history... seriously, buzz in and decide who gets to play?!? I think I'm done watching this (don't start laughing yet Fox... DFTL isn't in the clear just yet).
iMissEthan
The contestant shouldn't have won on her opponent's loss. She should have had to get it right in order to win or else they needed to do another tiebreak.
JenMD
That's what she's from! Thanks, bendyb. I've only seen one episode of BB, but it was that one. It was repeated on some random cable channel (FitTV, maybe?) within the last couple of months. Definitely her. Man, that was driving me nuts. Discussion of her ep of the show starts here, which, from what I could find elsewhere, puts her in Ep 8.

I think she should've had to sing after the other contestant blew the Elvis song, though. Don't they make you spell a word correctly to win a spelling bee after the other person messes up?
Ace of Spades
Yeah, the contestant has to spell another word correctly in order to win in a spelling bee so in this case, the contestant should have had to sing another song correctly. I would like it better that way, like she "earned" it.

The judging is way too strict especially when Katie got dinged for singing "road" instead of "roads." But DFTL is probably like that too.
chewingkebabs
Ok, I don't like this show anymore. Word to all of your comments re: having to sing correctly, overly strict judging, etc. Plus, Joey Fatone is an ass. Wayne Brady is much more fun and there is always the chance that he might "choke a bitch."
