If she's such a workhorse, how is it that she's all about spending the summer in the Big Brother house, chillin' in the hot tub and bitchin'?

I guess after all the work she's done before the show, she wants some time off. Or she's looking forward to being the designated house cleaner, which would require more work.

Not just that, she owns half a town! And soon: the world!
But seriously: the second "choose a gay lifestyle" fell from her lips, I knew we were headed down Trouble Avenue.

I wanted to like her (she was one of my favorites before the show aired) and then she had to go and blow it with the gay comment and the whole "I'm a multi-business owner."
I do like that she is a fan of the show, though.

Lying about your background, then trying to win first HOH? Bad strategy, sweetie. I think it's going to be too hard to keep her cover story. They're bound to sit around, having casual conversation, and she'll say something like, "In my restaurant/bowling alley/cannery/whatever, we once had a customer who..."

Hated her when in the first two converstations she brought up the "multi-business/wealthy/own the town and the people in it, homophobe, etc. " I live in a small town (pop. 9,000) and there are a couple of Kail's here. They buy property and open all sorts of businesses and are very arrogant. I don't know if Kail is religious, but it wouldn't surprise me. Successful people with a strong faith always come to the conclusion that they have what they have because God gave it to them. They can be mean and hateful, but that's ok because in their eyes they've been blessed and can do and think that they are correct in everything. I'm not saying Kail hasn't worked hard, but I bet she inherited a lot of what she has and didn't quite build it all up from scratch herself.

Her ego needs some serious notching down. It's not like she owns half of New York City-- and I guarantee the youngsters in the house could care less if she "runs her town". And if they did hear her say that, booting her certainly isn't about the money-- it's about the egotistical control factor.
I wanted to like her because I get tired of watching Pretty Young People, but she nixed all hope of that for me. Too bad.
I wish Dick were America's Player and we could text him to hit on her-- the scene I'm imagining is both beautiful and hysterical.

In this messed-up house, that may happen anyway.
Wasn't there someone on a past season of Survivor who lied about his/her profession (being some kind of pro athlete?), made a huge deal about covering it up, then once it was revealed, everyone just shrugged and said, "Eh"? Funny stuff, that. The same will probably happen for Kail. In a house where all kinds of twisted you-know-what is going down (the VD reveal on the first day?) Kail's "lie" will barely be a blip on the radar.

Jul 6, 2007 @ 12:23 pm
Yeah, that was Gary Hoogenboom... would've been Survivor: Guatamala? He had been a back-up qb for several NFL franchises, and people kept guessing that it was him, but he kept denying it. He didn't admit his true self until the reunion. But yeah, Kail's deal as a multi-business owner probably won't hurt her unless she's (a) in the final three, but not HoH (in which case, the HoH might let her go because she's got enough money, anyway); (b) in the final TWO and she's played about the same as her opponent. Otherwise, it's really a non-issue.

Somehow I suspected that "pro football player" implied "overseas pro football player" in the same way I suspected "senator's daughter" implied "state senator's daughter." And "multi-business owner" presumably implies "multinational industrial conglomerate," right, Kail?

Hee!
What bugged me most about Kail was how she wouldn't give a pregnant woman her seat on the bus because "I've been pregnant three times and nobody ever got up for meeeee-ah!" Who would need to get up for her? Surely, with all of the lowly peasants of McKenzie Bridge, Oregon slaving away in her multi-business, Kail is the only one in town whose primary mode of transportation is a litter?

What annoyed me about Kail was the sound of the phrase "multi-business owner" as she used it. It sounds like something she thinks one would have to check off on a tax form or an application or something like that. Saying "I own several businesses" just sounds more normal to me.

Lying about your background, then trying to win first HOH? Bad strategy, sweetie.
These shows so often turn into the Make-A-Wish Foundation and whoever "doesn't need the money" usually gets bounced, so if she can actually keep it up for two months, I thought it was pretty smart of Kail to lie about her background. How much money she apparently has is not going to make anyone want to help her get $500,000. Given that these people have nothing to do but sit around and talk, I think lying about your background could be a pretty daring move, but in Kail's case, I can see why she did it. Which wasn't just lying for the sake of lying, so she could revel in her own cleverness,
James. What kind of ninth-graders take philosophy anyway?

"multi-business owner" is such a peculiar phrase. I think "entrepenuer" would have been better, but maybe that's too hard for Kail to pronounce or something. Or "small business owner," which is what my father uses when anyone outside of his industry asks what he does for a living.
The only defensible reason to be heartbroken about a gay child is being upset that you think your child will be persecuted for his or her orientation. There's no "lifestyle choice" involved. I also frown upon the attitude of "no one every gave me a seat when I was pregnant, so I won't either." I've offerred seats to pregnant women, people handling young children, elderly people, folks with heavy looking bags, etc. for as long as I can remember. It's got nothing to do with whether anyone does the same for me, it's because it's a kind thing to do.
Successful people with a strong faith always come to the conclusion that they have what they have because God gave it to them.
My strong faith gives me the reassurance that my hard work will eventually pay off, but I still attribute my success to effort and hard work. God doesn't hand me anything on a silver platter because I have faith. Maybe that's why I'm not a multi-business owner who has half of my town working for me.

I did a little research on the businesses in
McKenzie Bridge, OR. There are only 29 businesses established there. 2 of them fall in the 20-49 employee range. 22 in the 1-4 employee range.
It appears to be a resort town, as ten of the businesses are "Accomodation and food services." Only six are construction or manufacturing.
Maybe she does run half the town. I can't seem to find an actual population for the city anywhere, it doesn't show up on the Oregon state census data.

Well, she lost me with what she said, but I think she's probably just another one of those people who has never met a gay man or woman before (at least, not that she knows of.) It's just too bad that her first up-close-and-personal experience with an out-and-proud gay man has to be with the one gay man who would unfortunately tend to make her believe that she's right about us (Joe, I'm looking at you--way to reinforce some of the worst negative stereotypes about the gay "lifestyle" there, bud.)

Threads elsewhere say she owns a couple of local hotels and grocery stores. Even though she's married and partnered in the business with her husband, I have to question how seriously she's involved with actually operating these concerns if she can saunter off to Hollywood to play a multi-month game show.
I'm not prepared to like her or her viewpoints, but something about that quote in the middle of Joe's introduction that got many riled up seemed rather managed and edited to me and somewhat unfair. That said, the bit about taking her Bible at the start of the show sounded like she was almost looking forward to indulging in some false persecution syndrome during her stay.
