Since Scarborough Country is officially gone with Joe becoming the new morning guy for MSNBC, I figure might as well let Dan have his own thread.

Tonight, I was so glad to see Dan rip that WWE guy a new one when he kept flip-flopping about whether Chris Benoit's child had Fragile X syndrome or not. It was moments like that when I realized just how much I miss Dan Abram discussing issues like this.

Plus, I'm loving his Winners and Losers segment: Tonight's silver winner went to Michael Jackson for moving to Virginia. Tonight's silver loser where all the residents and visitors to Virginia who have to look at the Virginia is for Lovers sign and remember who their new resident is.
velvetmorning
Yay! A new Dan thread! He's back and my TV is happy once again.
xaxat
Does Dan still run the network? If so, how does he manage to do both and still fit in time to sleep?
Mya
I'm very happy that he's back on t.v. I missed The Abram's Report. I don't normally watch any of the MSNBC evening shows but I will tune in tonight to see him.
chitowngirl
Woo hoo! Dan is back! I didn't know what to do with myself at 5:00 pm (Central) when his show went off the air. I sort of wish his new show was on before prime time since there are so many other shows on at 8:00. But I'm so excited to see him every night. I tried to be happy for him when he was promoted; I hope he's happy he'll have this show. It does seem like he's enjoying it.
chitowngirl
The NY Post says Dan's enjoying being back on the air:

DAN Abrams is said to be thrilled to be back on the air at 9 p.m. at MSNBC, where he's also the general manager running the cable channel. With Joe Scarborough doing the morning time slot vacated by Don Imus, "Scarborough Country" has been put on hiatus, and the 9 p.m. slot is now "Live with Dan Abrams." "He's having a blast," said a friend of Abrams, who is doing both jobs for now. Asked if Abrams would give up his management duties, an MSNBC spokesman said, "If it becomes permanent, that will have to be discussed."

Cool.
velvetmorning
Ha, of course he is.
I'm just waiting for him to bring back viewer emails.
Ashforth
Mark Mero, a former wrestler who apparently went by the moniker "Johnny B. Badd," was a guest tonight. Gah, he was freaky looking! He had oviously had an eye job, his eybrows were very sculpted, his forehead was botoxed to a taut shiny plain, and his hairline was... fascinating. I was trying to figure out whether it was plugs, a toupee, or what? I guess he talked about wrestling. I couldn't listen, I was so busy looking.

I tried to find a picture to link to, without success. I can say that he looks pretty much nothing like the older photos that I saw online.
chitowngirl
I'm just waiting for him to bring back viewer emails.

Yes! He actually read one of mine once. The emails are better than the Winners and Losers segment.

I didn't see the wrestler. Sounds like that was a good thing!
velvetmorning
Harry Potter Dan returned, which will make me happy for the rest of the month. All he needs to do is bring back emails and the old Abram's Report riff and we'll be back to normal.

Sorry - I missed it last night. What does this mean?

Harry Potter Dan

That is one of the funniest pictures I've ever seen!
RoxieVelma
Okay that pic had me rolling for 10 minutes.

You know when Dan brings Danny Bonaduce on, that someone's been arrested for drugs. Congrats Lindsay for proving Bonaduce still exists.
chitowngirl
Unfortunately, Danny seems to be one of the go-to people whenever drugs are discussed. I saw him another program recently.
Worleybird
Well, toward the end of the Scarborough Country run, Danny was on in the second half hour alot. Mostly about drugged out celebs, but often kept on during Joe's Holly-weird segment.
Jennionthefarm
Thank goodness Dan, and two of his guests, had the intelligence to say that the dumbass drunk driver in the chase, which led to the two news helicopters crashing, is not at fault for the helicopters crashing. It's very sad that the people died, but it doesn't follow that the driver should be held criminally responsible. Accidents happen, this was one of them. I have heard newsreaders repeat over and over that the driver might be held criminally liable.

YMMV, of course.

I'm enjoying the show.
Yoda Girl
I can't believe that Dan Abrams put that crazy, creepy, delusional, pedophile, John Mark Karr on his show. I really think that his fiancee should have her head examined. If not for her own good, then her child's. At some point, someone should clue the both of them into the fact that if you want the media to leave you alone, then you can't do entire live segments on cable news shows. And any educational institution that hypothetically hires him should update their insurance policy is all I'm saying.
chitowngirl

Oh my gosh. I was coming on to say the same thing. Wow. That was one uncomfortable, sort of surreal interview. Dan is good - he just kept at him, even calling him creepy to his face. I'm just surprised Dan didn't do one of his patented eye rolls at the end, but I guess the mine rescue team crisis intervened.
GoldenWoman
I find it truly scary that the man has kids! He is the last person who should be having children. I wish people would stop giving this piece of crap airtime.
chitowngirl
I missed the very beginning. Did Dan say why he had him on?
Yoda Girl
Did Dan say why he had him on?

It was the one year anniversary of his arrest in Thailand. Or something like that.
GoldenWoman
The John Mark Karr interview is one of the many reasons I hate news media now a days. They know that they are feeding into this guys mind games and that he is getting off on the attention yet they don't care. Trust me the world doesn't need to know his story and we don't need to be reminded of what he did.
Hyper Critical
Fuck you Dan - are you jealous? What a jerk the way he attacked Christiane Amanpour's CNN Presents God's Warriors. He kept cutting off his one guest that was speaking from fact and not emotion. Blech.
velvetmorning
Yeah, I usually love Dan, but his crap with Christiane and CNN got me a bit pissed off. It's not like MSNBC is the pinnacle of Journalism or anything. Whatever.
Antoniette76
What did he said? Is there a link?
Hyper Critical
Newsbusters. Daily Kos.
Antoniette76
Thanks for the link!

I wonder if Dan and I watch the same series?
velvetmorning
I'm just tired of MSNBC's crap with the other networks. It's old now. Get over it. I see them like the little scrawny kid that takes on the older bigger kids in a fight and the older kids just point and laugh at the little kid and say, "Whatever, dude," and walk away. I mean, yeah, CNN and definitely FOX can be assholes most of the time, but I don't know why MSNBC needs to get on their high horse. Didn't MSNBC break their programming to tell whatever Brintey-Spears-is-a-mess breaking news? Oh, and on Monday's Beat the Press, Dan went off on ABC for plugging Highschool Musical 2 after I just watched a half hour preview of NBC's fall shows on MSNBC. Is that not the same thing? I don't know. MSNBC just needs to get off that crap and focus on news and shitty entertainment stories and leave the other networks out of it.

Bah. I miss the good ol' days of the Abrams Report. :(

Word!

What is up with MSNBC attacking this program? Scarborough was all over it too.

This has to be coming from higher up on the NBC corporate ladder.

Hey Suits! You getting the talent to diss another channel's programming only makes you look more like Bill O'Reilly every day! Shut up. You're hurting yourself cos more people will probably watch the other shows to see what all the hubbub is about.

That said, the segment last night with Dan, Joe and Tucker, talking about Senator Craig was hilarious when Tucker started talking about being hit on in mens rooms, and wouldn't shut up, and then said he can't even take his kid to the bathroom at the soccer field cos they get hit on all the time. WTF??!! Where the hell is your kid playing soccer? at the bathhouse? You're not THAT cute Tucker!

I didn't really think Abrams was all the objectionable, at least as far as the content of his criticism. I think he was being assy to that one lady and letting his other guests run off at the mouth a bit, but I thought most of his points were right on. I watched one night of the CNN program and part of another, and I thought it was a wierd mish-mash of interesting facts, unfounded comparisons, and unchecked hyperbole. I don't know that Amanpour is worthy of scorn for it, but it was kind of slapdash journalism with a lot of loose ends and unwarranted conclusions.
attica finch
I laughed really, really hard at last night's coverage of the Larry Craig story. And not the least of which at the notion of Bowtie Boy being hit on at public restrooms. Hah! Abrams's glee over the 'Clinton is a nasty, naughty boy' clip was certainly infectious.

There's something hilariously wrong about JoScar referring to his 'peeps.'

That was the best 7 minutes on MSNBC in months!

I loved Joe & Dan laughing at him and his outrage at getting hit on. And then Tucker says on national tv he went BACK IN the restroom and pounds the guy's head against the wall?

And I believe that just like I believe "I am not gay. I have never been gay" from the Craigster. Which is to say: not. Still, big time fun on the tv, right there.

Darn it! The one time I miss the show in a long time and this happens? Found the transcript:
TUCKER: Having sex in a public men‘s room is outrageous. It‘s also really common. I‘ve been bothered in men‘s rooms. I think...
SCARBOROUGH: ... but have you been bothered in public restrooms, Dan? Because I know I haven‘t.
TUCKER: I have. I got bothered in Georgetown (INAUDIBLE)
ABRAMS: Really?
TUCKER: ... when I was in high school. Yes.
SCARBOROUGH: Wow.
...
TUCKER: ... there‘s clearly something wrong with Larry Craig. He appeared to believe it. This is a guy who‘s been accused repeatedly over the years of soliciting sex from men in bathrooms.
(LAUGHTER)
TUCKER: So the chances that he‘s arrested for the same thing accidentally...
(CROSSTALK)
TUCKER: ... he‘s the unluckiest man and he‘s Job?
SCARBOROUGH: Hey, Tucker?
TUCKER: You know what I mean? It‘s insane!
SCARBOROUGH: Was he the guy in Georgetown, Tucker?
(LAUGHTER)
...
ABRAMS: What did you do, by the way? What did you do when he did that? We got to know.
TUCKER: I went back with someone I knew and grabbed the guy by the—you know, and grabbed him, and—and...
ABRAMS: And did what?
TUCKER: Hit him against the stall with his head, actually! (LAUGHTER) And then the cops came and arrested him.
...
TUCKER: ... but I do think doing this in men‘s rooms appears to be common. It‘s totally wrong, and they should knock it off. I mean that. I think it‘s—I can‘t bring my son to the men‘s room at the park where he plays soccer because of all these creepy guys hanging around in there. I actually think it‘s a problem. I‘m sorry.

And then Tucker says on national tv he went BACK IN the restroom and pounds the guy's head against the wall?

As someone said on another board, "The measure of a man is the number of friends he needs to go beat up a gay guy."

I was really hoping that Joe or Dan would point out that women are supposed to think it's a compliment to get hit on, so why didn't he, but they didn't make the connection. I hope that every woman that Tucker ever hit on gets a bunch of her friends to go beat him up. I haven't decided if I want it to happen on successive days, or all on the same day.

Tucker seemed to be a little overly sensitive about it. I sort of wonder if it's due to his experience with some random lady who accused him of raping her about 8-9 years ago. He talked about it at great length in an interview with Salon.com a few years ago. Some lady he never met who saw him on television or something attempted to sue him for raping her in a hotel in a city he had never been to, and as soon as they started investigating it the lady was all "oops, nevermind" and it ended up that she had some chronic mental issues. He mentioned how much it upset him and his family at the time, and it does seem like he gets wound up real easily about stuff like that.

Well, that person on the other board needs to step into the 21st Century. Gays come in all shapes and sizes and degrees of masculinity. GLAAD and GLSEN are all over this "funny" story.

I got the GLAAD email too. Tucker Carlson is one of the few (if only) conservatives to support gay marriage and oppose don't ask don't tell. He may have all sorts of issues (insecurity, Napolean complex, whatever) that made him beat that guy up, but I seriously doubt that homophobia or gay-bashing were his motives, which is what GLAAD is implying. Bleh. In an effort to look more masculine, I suspect Tucker would beat up anyone he could; an equal-opportunity basher, if you will :)

Last night, Pat Buchanan was blustering on about how Larry Craig was 'sick,' and asked Dan "if he [Craig] was in a gay bar and propositioned another man, wouldn't you want him out of the Senate for immorality?" Dan was incredulously silent for a few seconds, then said "of course not!"
Orion7
Good for Dan. That's the distinction that is sometimes being lost here, I think. I would hope that people in his party are pressuring for his resignation because he pled guilty to a crime, but I think for a lot of them, the main issue was that he was looking for sex with another man.

I should have given more context for that quote, but the way it was meant, or at least the way I read it, the poster was taking a shot at Carlson for not fighting his own battles, not implying that a gay man would be easier to beat up than a straight man. It's vigilante justice any way you look at it.
ValLovely
God...he is so smug. Sometimes I want to slap his perfect face...break his nose or something. Anything to mar the perfection. He's so convinced he's right all the time.

He is a lot less loveable on his new show, isn't he. Still loveable (to me anyway) but I miss the ol' Abrams Report Dan.

I'm going the other way on this. I couldn't stand him on The Abrams Report. I thought he came across as an arrogant tool. But I find myself liking him on this new show. As for the show, it sometimes has the Countdown vibe to it.

Tonight's show? I found the discussion on Bill-O's comments re Black patrons at Sylvia's restaurant and an Anita Baker concert pretty interesting. This was the first time I'd actually heard of the controversy (if you can call it that). O'Liely's ignorance never ceases to amaze me. What a frikkin A**hat! Btw, I'm not buying that loudmouth Steven A Smith's defense of Bill-O.

I loved the Abrams Report. I think one of the big differences for me is that the AR was mostly about crime stories, and this one is about anything that's happening (politics, etc.) I watch Dan just to watch him (if you know what I mean - and I think you do velvetmorning).

I heart the new show but where is the email address?

I heart the new show but where is the email address?

I've tried many times to find it. Maybe just use the "Beat the Press" email form?

Just found this:

After 15 months at the helm of MSNBC, legal analyst Dan Abrams is stepping down as general manager and returning to hosting full-time, the cable news network announced Monday.

I hope this is a move he really wanted. I'm really happy he's back on the air full-time.
krazydanlover
Thanks, maybe I'll try that. I use to email the old show all the time.
I think Dan is very happy being back on television full-time now. He seems to love the spotlight and
he looks pretty good in it.

So, Dan in an apron and giant oven mitts next to Don King.

I haven't been able to watch for awhile. Can you tell me what this means (even when I don't know it's a funny picture!)?
velvetmorning
In the last segment of Thursday's show, Dan and Don King are comparing George Foreman and Evander Holyfield's grills. It was just a bunch of nonsense but still a sight. Tiny little Dan in his pink tie, black apron and matching mitts, standing next to larger than life Don King in an obnoxious sparkled jacket, waving a pair of mini USA flags. I loved it.
