Didn't see a topic for this, so I figured I'd make one. Anyone else watching this? So far, it's better than this year's MTV Awards (I know that's not saying much, but still..).
SeeeTeee
The tribute to hip hop was hot. I love MC Lyte. Paper Thin was my shit. And seeing Dougie Fresh and Slick Rick together again is putting my nostalgia meter way too high.

And the Isley Brothers tribute was nice too. Their greatest hits cd is never too far from my cd player.
SeeeTeee
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. Teena Marie and Rick James. I'm in heaven. I rarely get affected by awards shows but they are doing all the right things.
Puds38
I tuned in late, thinking I could always find out about whoever got into a fight in the morning.

Fortunately a friend called and let me know Slick Rick & Doug E. Fresh were on.

And then to see Flava Flav, and The Isley Brothers and then Tina Marie & Rick James. Well I must say I'm was very impressed with BET this year. I'm gonna have to catch the repeat and tape some of these acts.
tigsun
Ah the memories of the good times!

I'm looking forward to a repeat of this show. I was channeling surfing when I saw Slick Rick.
Sylph
I caught a part of the Isley tribute. When is this going to repeat? I have to watch it from the beginning cause it looks like the BET Awards is the thing to watch. The VMA's better take note on how an awards show is supposed to be done with the audience enjoying themselves.
MisterIdol
Tina Maria and Rick James and Isley Brothers forever!!

Raven honey, you need to put down the sammich and never wear the 50s do you had tonight. Not cute or attractive at all.
MC SammyD
The only repeat I can find is on July 13 at 8 PM EST. I don't know why they are waiting so long to repeat it, but at least it's not like MTV with it being replayed constantly.

I thought the show was very good, overall. It had bumpy moments, like when Monique introduced Jay-Z and they had loaded the teleprompter incorrectly so they just scrambled on live TV for 5 minutes. But it was good. I really liked the set. Monique was okay. She can be funny, but usually she's borderline obnoxious for me. Stop yelling, lady! Inside voices! But her intro to "Crazy In Love" was hilarious, so I'll give her that.

As far as the performances, I missed Teena Marie and Rick James, but I did flip back in time to see Rick James tell the audience "I'm Rick James, bitch!" so I can die happily. I know the Isley Brothers are legends and stuff, but that performance felt like it was a half hour. I am a huge Janet fan, so I was eagerly anticipatin gher performance. Unfortunately, it kinda blew. I thought the intro was great, with the spokenword part as she climbed through that tunnel thing, but jamming 3 different songs into a 4 minute period just doesn't work and the whole performance ended up messy. Too bad because if she had just combined 2 of the 3 it could've been much better. I liked Jay-Z, even with Kid Rock screwing up his, what, 3 lines? I hate Usher and think all of his performances look the same, so I hated his. Crucify me if you must. Kanye was good, Alicia was great, Outkast was good but I've seen them perform "Roses" better.

Overall, good show. Much better than any award show MTV has put on in the past few years.
Ty
BET continues to kick every other award show's ass.

Nothing will ever top Michael Jackson & James Brown from last year, but Rick James came damn close.
WiseGal
Raven honey, you need to put down the sammich and never wear the 50s do you had tonight. Not cute or attractive at all.

I'm guessing she is the "Christina Aguilera" of BET.
Sylph

This is true. I freaked out when MJ came onstaged and performed with JB. That was fire. (I was also horrified when I realized that the thing standing beside MJ was Latoya.)

The "I'm Rick James, bitch" line has me rolling. Everyone had to stand up and applaud him.
WherewasI
The beginning of Janet's performance was stolen from a fashion show. I can't remember which one but I remember seeing it on the Style network.
Puds38

ITA that was a priceless moment.

No repeat until the 13th? I was hoping for sooner, but I guess that'll have to do.
Dark Child
The G-Unit and Ludacris performances were horrible to me, too many rappers on the mic is not a good thing.
LadyEssence
Ok...here's my text on the show:

1. Go Monique....rep' for the big girls of the world. However, next time do some endurance training so that you will not be so winded once the routine is over.

2. Ok...stop feeding the following people... Rueben, Rick James and Raven Simmone
(Monique and Tina Marie...still get to eat .. but just a little)

3. Janet.... break up with JD and get your talent back... and never dance that close to The Elephant Man again. He wiggs' me out...

4. The Isley Brothers.... you got to love it. Especially when all the young people didn't have a clue what the songs were but they knew the beats... ahhh... sampling, how's its crippled the youth

5.Doug E. Fresh... and Slick Rick... GREAT! .... ps no more chains for Slick...

6. When drugs go bad.... Flava Flav, Rick James, Melly Mel, the Ying Yang twins...

7. OK feed the following people: Brandy and LL Cool J... a little weight does help the emaciated look.

8.Finally, I am deathly afraid of what Lil' Jon is hiding behind his shades. If he ever takens them off....... never mind, too scarry of a thought.
Mita_Jo
6. When drugs go bad.... Flava Flav, Rick James, Melly Mel, the Ying Yang twins...

YES! But they were entertaining. The Rick James/Teena Marie moment could have been a lot better if they weren't screaming the whole time and clowning, but I did get really excited. I love me some Teena Marie.

I do agree that this was one of the best awards shows. BET seems to have found the formula because the first year, which is when I believe the drama with Snoop/Suge Knight took place (or was that the second year?) really brought it down to the level of the Source Awards. Now I think they can compete with and beat the MTV Awards. It was definitely a lot classier than the MTV Awards, even with Rick James.

5.Doug E. Fresh... and Slick Rick... GREAT! .... ps no more chains for Slick...

That was the absolute best part of the whole show for me. It made my whole year.

8.Finally, I am deathly afraid of what Lil' Jon is hiding behind his shades. If he ever takens them off....... never mind, too scarry of a thought.

I've never seen him, but my friends saw him on How I'm Living or something and he didn't have his glasses on. Apparently he should keep them on because he's a bit cockeyed.

The G-Unit and Ludacris performances were horrible to me, too many rappers on the mic is not a good thing.

ITA. I can't stand 50 Cent as it is, but I'm okay with Lloyd Banks, mainly because I love his song. It would have been a much better performance if 50 would have stayed backstage.

3. Janet.... break up with JD and get your talent back...

I think she was losing that way before JD came in the picture. She seems to be too concerned with looking cute, like Britney. I haven't seen Janet sing live since probably the Super Bowl, but I can't be too sure about that since it was so long ago.
Miss Feather
Ok, so the one Isley Brother hasn't performed on stage with the other two in 20 years and they couldn't even cut his mike on! WTF

That damn Ying Yang Twin with the missing finger and his damn Haannnnnhhhh every 2 minutes should've been escorted out.

Rick James and Teena Marie, no words. Especially when I saw that Rick was about to take his shirt off.

Was it me or was everyone clowning and talking loud when Leon came on the stage?
kasarah
I Tivoed this so that I didn't have to endure the weak intros and such that are so common on awards shows. I think I got done with the show in less than an hour.

Kanye' West: I loved Yolanda Adams. He was okay but...

Mo'Nique intro: REPRESENT! She did that up. I agree, she was winded something awful, but damn! She did it! She really looked good.

Tina Marie and Rick James: Yes, I agree, if they would have stopped with the histrionics, I would have loved it instead of just enjoying seeing them together. Damn, Tina Marie should take some pointers from Mo'Nique on foundation garments.

Outkast: The video bugs me half to death because I've seen it so much... I didn't want to see it performed live. Couldn't they have performed something else? Even (God forbid) "Hey Ya!" and "The Way You Move". Surprisingly, I am not as tired of them as "Roses". Well, maybe "Hey Ya!".

The old school montage: Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh: I loved them! Damn! It was like '86 all over again.

I didn't enjoy Jay-Z's performance. It didn't seem loud enough or something was missing...
bj1968
I taped the show, but I haven't seen it yet, so I'm saving my comments until i watch. but I am looking forward to Rick, Teena, and the Isleys.

Mo'Nique can get on my nerves sometimes, so I'm looking forward to seeing which side of my nerves she getting on after the show is over.

Btw where is AJ from 106 and Park because my little sister keeps begging me to find out where he has been?
Puds38
Btw where is AJ from 106 and Park because my little sister keeps begging me to find out where he has been?

I think he was temp. off the air over contract negotiations or something. Last I heard he was hired back to the show (106 and Park) , but maybe he's still in the doghouse a bit.
Miss Feather
AJ is definitely off of BET he was there at the show covering for the TV show Extra.
deNatalie08
I thought Jay-Z gave a great performance, but what was up with Kid Rock? I hate him (KR) anyway, and then he was trying to rap the second verse with Jigga...the one about the cop pulling him over...and it was as if KR didn't even know the words! It was just abysmal.

I thought Monique was great though...she covered nicely when the teleprompter was screwed up!
Snarky
I only caught the last couple of minutes, but it seemed like it was pretty good. The BET Awards were miles better than the stupid MTV VMAs.

I also saw the post-show with Jacque Reid (the anchor from BET News) and Raven. I didn't like Raven's look last night. She normally looks decent on her Disney Channel show, but that dress was extremely unflattering. Hopefully she's not packing in the pounds.

Talking about Lil Jon's fugliness, check out this snark-worthy pic: his senior portrait.
AddictedtoBrain
Please, cow, don't dance again.

ETA: I thought you were fucking lying about that picture being Lil' Jon, but then I did this and OHMYGOODNESS.
MackMamma
Whaaaaaat??!! Oh man, there are tears running down my face and I'm not sure if I'm laughing or crying.
dr gailey
There are no words to describe that picture of Lil Jon.
Miss Feather
Yall are gonna get me in trouble for that picture. I just spit coffee all over my computer!!!!!!!!!!
jennypenny
OMG!!! Please post both of those pics in the Chappelle's Show thread, puhleeeze! Jesus was that funny.

I didn't watch much of the awards cuz they usually suck but after hearing about how good it was I am going to have to catch it on repeat. I did see Mo'Nique talking to Denzel and I saw Gabrielle Union and Carmelo Anthony do their presenter thing. Other than that, nothing. However, I did hear the Jay-Z performance on Russ Parr the next morning and it was off the hook. Even if Kid Rock did mess up his lines. I was bouncing around in my car rapping my ass off.
Cynthia187
Does anyone know when they're going to repeat it?
Puds38
According to this poster, it will repeat July 13th.
tigsun
Is there video of the beginning part of the show with Monique doing Crazy in Love?

I'd like to see it. Everyone at my job is talking about that part!
AddictedtoBrain
You don't want to see it. TRUST.
Mita_Jo
Is there video of the beginning part of the show with Monique doing Crazy in Love?

No, she and a bunch of bigger girls all performed it. I thought it was great. I think she did a good job. I can't move like that and I'm half their size.
sears44
I am a huge Janet fan, so I was eagerly anticipatin gher performance. Unfortunately, it kinda blew. I thought the intro was great, with the spokenword part as she climbed through that tunnel thing, but jamming 3 different songs into a 4 minute period just doesn't work and the whole performance ended up messy. I really did not like this performance either. Firstly, I didn't get the wind tunnel thing until I read the message boards to find out what it meant ("she was fighting her way through all of the negative media and breaking free of their negativity") Secondly, Janet always sets an atmosphere or stage when she performs (i.e. dark lighting, the spoken word intro in "rhytmn nation) and I just thought that the set was too dark and the performance was too dark. It just felt like a performance from the "velvet rope" era and not the "damita jo" era. Thirdly, i have no idea who elephant man is and couldn't understand a word he said. Didn't like having the three songs performed. I would've preferred something very simplistic.

And someone mentioned upthread about Janet "singing". The last time I have seen Janet "sing" is during her "All For You" HBO Special. Everything that I have seen so far for this album has been lip-synched, including the Super Bowl. Not that I am complaining b/c I like what she does, she re-records the vocals, adding different things to the song, and lip-synchs to it.
Ty
Janet sang "I Want You" live on Good Morning America. I was shocked.
MC SammyD
Thirdly, i have no idea who elephant man is and couldn't understand a word he said.

Yeah, can someone tell me who he is? Does he have any songs out? Is he even famous. I swear I've never heard of him or seen him before.

Janet did do "I Want You" live on Ryan Seacrest, as well. As far as rerecording the songs and then lip-synching, I always think it's funny when she purposely records lines incorrectly and then lip-synchs to that. I guess she thinks we'll hear the wrong words and say "Oh look, she messed up! She must not have lip-synched because they would surely record it correctly!" Your reverse psychology won't work on me, Janet! I know she has done it with "All Nite" before, but I didn't tape the BET performance so I can't check.

I don't always mind lip-synching, though. I actually wish Usher would have lip-synched his performance. Instead he just has a backing track play, just sings a couple random words here and there, and then doesn't even bother to pretend that he's singing the rest. It's distracting. At least move your mouth and act like you're singing.
ChocolateCherry

TiVO says it'll be on Tuesday, July 6 at 7pm. I missed most of the show, but I don't get how it's an awards show. The show was 3 hours and they only gave out 6 awards. They need to call it what it was, a concert of the hottest on BET.
amani
Elephant Man is a dancehall artist. He has a single out called "Jook Gal", which I see all the time on MTV2.

I only saw bits and pieces of the "awards", but I loved that Beyonce and Jay-Z matched, but didn't even have the nerve to sit together.

Thank you, Trinigal..
Trinigal_chica
Elephant Man is a dancehall artist. He has a single out called "Dude", which I see all the time on MTV2.

Actually the artist who sings "Dude" is Beenie Man.Elephant man has a song out call "Jook Gal".
iron chef
Oh, there's a page 3? Okay, never mind.
Cynthia187
Well, the show wasn't repeated today...and my PVR (Dish Network's cheap version of TiVo) says 7/13. *sigh*...
Puds38
Just a reminder that the repeat airing is tonight.
Sylph
Kanye West and Yolanda Adams were amazing.

Loved the tribute to hip-hop. 25 years. You've coming a long way baby.

What ate Raven-Symone? I was looking at the screen like,"What did they do to you?"

Beyonce, blah. Brandy, blah.

MTV should beg Monique to host the VMA's. At least she's funny when she wants to be.
Puds38
What ate Raven-Symone? I was looking at the screen like,"What did they do to you?"

Whatever they did she needs to fire her stylist.

The hair: so-so wrong. Looked like she stole one of the wigs Halle Berry wore in that Dorothy Dandridge movie. Who is wearing finger curls in 2004?

The wrap: only makes her HUGORMOUS boobs look bigger. Total package just one big ball of fug.

Raven, you're what 18? What ever happened to a nice dress and normal hair?

Monique was actually very funny and I give her props for doing Crazy in Love.
WanderingRoman
MTV should beg Monique to host the VMA's. At least she's funny when she wants to be.

Amen.

I'm getting tired of Janet Jackson's 40 year-old ass still trying to look like a 20 year-old. It ain't cute anymore, Janet! It's been lame as hell for a long time now. With that damn sheet and those parachute pants and flinging that damn weave all up in your damn face. TAKE THAT SHIT OUT OF YOUR FACE, JANET! Damn!

I enjoyed Alicia Keys' performance, even though she sounded strained. I thought Fantasia looked young and hip. It worked because she's 19! Well, she was at the time. I'm tired of all these old-ass people trying to look younger than they are.

I didn't see the Teena Marie/Rick James performance/"I'm Rick James, bitch!" comment. But I heard the performance was ghastly. Was it? Does anyone know when it's coming back on?
Ellegado
I saw Teena Marie live in concert a few weeks ago and believe me, she sounded nothing like thay sad stuff she sounded like at the BET Awards. Her and Rick sounded like a married act singing on the Tropicana casino floor. Rick James comment was the only thing that saved that segment of the show.
Miss Feather
RIP Rick James...
Make It So
Man. He had to go out after a display like that.

Since I missed that part of the show, what prompted that outburst, anyway?
Ty
BET had the nerve to play the Rick/Teena performance tonight in rotation with other videos as a tribute to him. So sad.
Ellegado
TY it seemed that a make-up person didn't recognize who the hell he was so at the microphone he had to remind her. RIP Rick. And Boo to BET for showing his last apperance. I know it was his last musical performance on TV, but still everyone knew that he wasn't even at his okay, let alone his best. Just have like a two hour block of his best music and rememberances from friends and family. Dumbasses.
