Picked up for fall by ABC. From ABC's press release/futon critic:

Once upon a time, director Barry Sonnenfeld (Men In Black, Get Shorty, The Addams Family) and writer-producer Bryan Fuller ("Heroes," "Wonderfalls," "Dead Like Me") created an unprecedented blend of romance, crime procedural and high-concept fantasy. It is a love story about a young man with a very special gift...the ability to return someone dead briefly back to life with just a simple touch. Ned, a mild-mannered baker of fabulous pies, discovered his gift as a child. Now he puts his gift to good use, working with his only friend, a private investigator, to crack murder cases by asking victims to name their killers. But the tale gets complicated, as all tales do, when he saves his childhood sweetheart and she miraculously stays alive. Each week, she encourages him to use his powers to solve mysteries and help others. Life would be perfect, except for one cruel twist: if Ned ever touches her again, she'll lose the life he gave her, for good this time. There's always a catch... Golden Globe® nominee Lee Pace (The Good Shepherd, "Soldier's Girl"), Chi McBride ("The Nine," "Boston Public"), Golden Globe® nominee Swoosie Kurtz ("Huff," "Sisters") and Tony Award winner Kristen Chenoweth ("The West Wing," Broadway's Wicked) star in a fairytale in the spirit of Amelie, Stranger than Fiction, and Chocolat. From the producers of Big Fish comes an equally magical and delightful series that offers a weekly dose of sweet, heartwarming, quirky fun.

I'm not even sure what to say. Reminds me of that creepy glove from Torchwood, though.
UnfamousLoser
Loved season 1 and most of season 2 of Dead Like Me. Loved Wonderfalls. Because of the Bryan Fuller participation, I'm in.

(However, if this one tanks, I'm praying he'll take a meeting with HBO or Showtime).
stepliana
I will tune into anything that involves Lee Pace. And Bryan Fuller doesn't hurt. Now if they'd only get Caroline Dhavernas on as a guest star? That, would make my life.
CapaWasDetated
Wow, that press release makes this show sound like my new favorite show. I love Dead Like Me, I love Wonderfalls, I love Bryan Fuller and I LOVE Lee Pace.

All of a sudden I'm super excited for this show. Can't wait.

From the latest Ask Ausiello column:

Question: With the upfronts coming next week, can you tell us which pilots are generating the most heat?— Smalley72
Ausiello: One pilot is generating more heat than all the rest combined: ABC's Pushing Daisies. One of my network moles went so far as to call it "one of the best pilots I have ever seen."

That made me happy. I've read the pilot script, and the show is excellent. I loved DLM and Wonderfalls (and Bryan's work on Heroes), and this is definitely right up there with those shows. I can't wait to actually see it.

That pretty much sums up how I feel about this show as well. I can't wait! And it has a narrator, if done right it can also be a great feature to the show.

Is Wednesdays at 8, before Private Practice (that looked awful), going to work for this show? I sure hope so, I don't want another Wonderfalls in terms of it being canned after 4 episodes. In all other terms I want another fantastic show like Wonderfalls.
stepliana
I'm really excited that it's starting out the Wednesday night lineup, since that means I have three straight hours of TV on Wednesdays (Pushing Daisies, Private Practice, Dirty Sexy Money. That's quality right there.)

Also, there's promo pictures and a show description up here, if anyone's interested.
justsmile
There is a Preview Clip at Zap2it.

This show looks great.

I only heard about this show this morning, but I give it a few points right off the bat for apparently naming the restaurant "The Pie Hole."

Man, they better keep that and not change it once it goes to series. I'm definitely going to check this one out.
macncheese
This show sounds fantastic! Fuller, Pace, Chenoweth? I'm sooo there.

One thing that will give me some solace for the possible longterm success of this show is that it's on ABC and not that other crap network. Just a bit.

Is it September yet?
sweetjane
Playbill has an article on the show which highlights the number of theater veterans in the cast. Here's a quote from Kristin Chenoweth:
About the series, Chenoweth recently told Playbill.com, "[Lee Pace is] a talented individual. He plays a guy who can bring people back from the dead. Now it sounds hokey, sounds like, 'Oh we've seen that before.' But the trick is this: He can touch people — that's how he brings them back, but he has 60 seconds to decide. If he touches them again before 60 seconds, they go back to being dead. If he leaves it, they live, but somebody else drops dead. It's very complicated. But Bryan Fuller is the writer, and Barry Sonnenfeld directed it. You know, I read the script and, again, I'm pretty picky. It's gotta be something really interesting for me to [accept a role] — whether it goes or succeeds is besides the point. It really has to speak to me. There's a love triangle, and I play one of the girls. It's a great cast."

And Ausiello is hyperventilating over the show.
Pushing. Daisies.

I've said it before, and, now that I've actually seen the complete pilot, I'm saying it again with added vigor: This is the show. The one everyone will be talking about. The one we'll be obsessing over. The one with the potential to replace Gilmore Girls as Ask Ausiello's favorite child.

I can't wait for you guys to see it. It kills me that you have to wait until September. I'm tempted to stream the thing online myself, but then I'd be arrested and lose my job and that would suck for everyone.

For now, you'll just have to take my word for it. The 2007-08 TV season will be all about them Daisies.

The show sounds intriguing. Unfortunately ABC is kind of on my shitlist at the moment.

Matt Roush is also loving what he's seen of this show so far.
Illyria B
Matt Roush is saying it's like a Tim Burton fairytale? Not that I needed anything more to be completley psyched about this show, but that made me even more convinced this is going to be my new favourite show. And just look at that promo pic of Lee with all the flowers, reminds me of Big Fish, I want it to be September tomorrow!
withwonderly
And just look at that promo pic of Lee with all the flowers, reminds me of Big Fish, I want it to be September tomorrow!

I cannot wait to have Lee back on my screen. While Wonderfalls is the only thing of his I've seen, I have fallen completely in love with him and am so glad this show is getting such early rave reviews.

According to those who attended the presentation today, the audience also loved the show. Oooh, September, please come quickly!

Edit: Never mind, Illyria B. Thanks for the links, stepliana and justsmile - you've pretty much made my night! Too bad the ABC Media Net pictures are so small (at least some of the bigger versions are on Zap2It, though).
MichaelKnight
I'm placing the over/under at 8 episodes.
Wild Roses
I'm glad this show is getting good buzz this early. I'm definitely looking forward to it since it has Kristin Chenoweth in it.
sweetjane
Roush's saying that it's like "the best Tim Burton fairy-tale fable ever" and a "wild pop-colored blend of comedy, fantasy and mystery" certainly makes this show sound like a dream come true. Of course, then he has to throw around the phrases "somewhat challenging time period" and "hard-to-pigeonhole."

I hope we get recaps for this show.

ETA: Today's Ask Ausiello says that Bryan Fuller is already hard at work on a companion comic book.

Edited again to update TV Guide link.

I'm kinda psyched for this show. I had never heard about it until I read the new ABC line-up and now I'm all excited. Chenowith has always irked me for some reason, but I will watch anything with Lee Pace and his sexy voice. Oh, and, WORD to hoping Caroline Dhavernas getting some type of guest spot.
withwonderly

Can't say much about Chenoweth, other than she seems cute, but I so agree with you about Lee Pace and his voice. The way he says, "Who does that?" in that clip posted earlier makes me all giggly. I really have to go back and rewatch Wonderfalls again. There were definitely a few times when I rewound just to hear the way Lee Pace pronounced something with his slight Southern twang. Here's hoping that Caroline and the lovely Katie Finneran both guest star. They both have to make an appearance, but I feel Katie's a little more likely to for some reason.

I know that only the pilot has been filmed, but does anyone know where this show shoots? Here (if so, where)? Canada?

I was sad to see that both Lee Pace and Anna Friel were not at the upfronts, but at least we get cute pictures of them anyway, right?
Illyria B
Oh, and, WORD to hoping Caroline Dhavernas getting some type of guest spot.

That must happen!

I also like the idea of a comic book, seems like a good idea to make the show stick even more. Is it September yet? And why doesn't ABC have preview clips up of their new shows? NBC did a good job with that.

withwonderly: where are those photos from?
needsleep05
withwonderly, have you seen Soldier's Girl? Lee Pace is even sexy as a woman. Anyway, it's a good film. Hard to watch at times, but good, and it was the first thing I ever saw him in. Plus, the yummy Troy Garity is the lead.

And how could I have not mentioned Katie Finneran?! The TV gods will smite me in my sleep.

It's nice to know that ABC seems to have a lot of confidence in the show by placing it on the Wednesday night line-up.
sweetjane
ABC.com has a Fall Preview section up now, although it's not quite as developed as NBC's. They have one clip per show. The Pushing Daisies page has the same preview as Zap2it, and they have a message board set up for it, and that's about it. Hopefully they will flesh it out more over the summer.
Illyria B
Same clip, argh! I've already watched that over and over again. Maybe they'll add more clips, Dirty Sexy Money has two...

Everything about this show looks so perfect, I'm loving the artwork, promo pictures and so on, it just seems so well thought out and you get an instant feel about what type of show it is. And there's not many shows like that.
BrainyBlonde
I'm sold on the show just based on that quirky clip. I have no idea who Lee Pace is, but I adore Anna Friel and Kristin Chenowith, having seen them both on Broadway (in different shows.) I can't wait to see a trailer and more clips! Come on, ABC!
jcin617
but I adore Anna Friel and Kristin Chenowith, having seen them both on Broadway

Oh, same here. I saw Kristin Chenowith in Wicked and loved her Glinda - the love transfered to her by proxy.
SoniaPL
This show looks like it has the potential to be really great. Having Lee Pace on my TV every week is going to be awesome.
Dominique78
This show is on my "to watch" list next fall. I am hooked on it just from the small clip so I am a fan already!
freesia
I'm on board! Loved Wonderfalls (have watched the DVDs multiple times) and liked Dead Like Me. And the previews look great. Hope I'm not going into this with expectations that are too high, though.
Bulldog
This show is getting great advance word around the internet. It's definitely my most anticipated next fall.
sweetjane
I saw Anna Friel on Broadway, too, several years ago when she was in Patrick Marber's Closer. It was a great cast - Natasha Richardson, Ciaran Hinds, and Rupert Graves co-starred with her. I've also seen a few of her movies, including A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Here's another rave review of the pilot from Televisionary. It's pretty in-depth and a little spoilery. I hope this can live up to the buzz.
sweetjane
Some more positive reactions from the upfronts:

EW's Snap Judgment puts it on their "Most Promising" list and says:
Men in Black director Barry Sonnenfeld brings his lush, oddball vision to a fairy-tale story about a guy (Wonderfall's Lee Pace) who has one hell of a conundrum: He can bring people back to life with a touch, but they die for good if he ever lays a finger on them again. The lovely Anna Friel plays the man's childhood love, whom he saves from the crypt after a nasty murder. Offbeat, good-natured, plus it has Tony Award-winning Broadway star Kristen Chenoweth (You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown and Wicked) — what's not to like?

IGN: You'll Want to Be Pushing Daisies This Fall
By far the highlight of ABC's reel, this new series from Bryan Fuller, the creator of Dead Like Me, and a Heroes writer/producer, looks fantastic. Fuller certainly seems obsessed with death in his work, as this story is about a man with a curious talent; if he touches a dead person, they come back to life. If he touches them again, they die once more, this time for good. He uses this gift to help solve crimes, bringing murder victims back just long enough to have them name their killer, before touching them once more. It sounds grim, but it's played in a fantastical way, and director Barry Sonnenfeld (The Addams Family / Men in Black) looks to have given the series the right off-kilter visuals to make it the appealing sort of macabre that Tim Burton traffics in. The driving plotline - our hero brings back to life a girl he loved as a child, but now, tragically, can't ever touch her again, or she'll die - garnered genuine pathos in just the couple of minutes shown, and ABC's description of this as a sort of dark "fairy tale" seems right. Definitely a show to look out for this fall.

theTVaddict Sizes Up ABC’s New Dramas:
Every once in awhile, a television show comes along that changes the game. ER revitalized the medical drama, FRIENDS ushered in a new era of comedies and PUSHING DAISIES will, well we’re not actually sure what DAISIES will do. The one thing we can promise you is that it’s unlike anything on television (which is a good thing) and you’ll fall in love with DAISIES the moment they spring to life. Yup, you heard it here first folks. PUSHING DAISIES is the fall’s next big hit.

Chi McBride is scheduled to be on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on Thursday 5/24. I figured it was for a movie or something else since it seemed too early to start publicity for fall shows, but it does say it's for Pushing Daisies on their homepage. They'll probably show the Same Damn Clip, though.
Bulldog
I posted this in The OC thread too, but thought I would put it here as well. TV Guide's Ausiello strongly hints that the pilot role Adam Brody turned down was the lead in Pushing Daisies.
Illyria B

Seriously? Him in that part seems to make no sense, while Lee Pace makes all the sense in the world. If it's true I'm extremely happy he turned it down.
silentwilight
I cannot wait for this.

Lee Pace.is.so.cute.

I also adore Anna Friel.

Really excited!

Illyria B, I am also extremely happy this show doesn't have Adam Brody. Adam Brody is no Lee Pace.
Illyria B
Can Adam Brody even act? I mean as anything other than Seth, it always seemed like there wasn't much difference between the two of them or that part he played on Gilmore Girls. That's the only things I've ever seen him in.

I would've thought Lee Pace was the first choice for this part.

They'll probably show the Same Damn Clip, though.

Probably. I really need a new clip, I've watched the existing one too many times now, but most of all I'd like a trailer.
Occono
If they give a Wonderfalls actress a cameo I hope one of the DLM cast gets one too!

I'm a bit excited for this, but I didn't really get into Wonderfalls as much as DLM, and Heroes hasn't gotten me either, so it might not give me the same feeling.
The 2nd Evil
At first, I scoffed at the concept, but now I'm really looking forward to it.
stepliana
There's a new three minute promo here.

It only made me love the show even more. I must see it now.
Illyria B
First off: I love the narrator! The narration fits perfectly with the theme and the feel/look of the show and it's not just a VO to have a VO, it's really part of the story. And it also helps a lot that he's not American, it just adds another layer to the show.

I don't think wow covers how fantastic this looks, but wow. I'm completely wowed. The narrator, the look, the concept, Lee Pace, the love story, the works!

It almost looks too good to be true and that makes it one of those shows that I love and they get cancelled right away. I really want to be wrong about that because this looks like my new favourite show. And I desperately need one too now that Veronica Mars has ended.
moemac
Yowza, Lee Pace is smoking.

My feelings exactly.
whatthenelly
Wow. I apparently have a Lee Pace-sized whole in my heart I was previously unaware of. This show looks amazing.
TropGirl
I can't wait for this. I absolutely loved Dead Like Me and Wonderfalls, and Lee Pace was one of my favorites on the latter. I've been a fan of Anna Friel for a long time, and all of the other actors look great. I just hope people tune in and it doesn't get an early cancellation like Fuller's other shows, because this looks like it has the potential to be amazing.
blankmixtape
I just finished watch the three minute promo and I think I'm in love.

I do too and this show looks like it could fill the void.
kieyra

Well, he's not a total show-killer--he was involved with Heroes (right?) and Dead Like Me did get two seasons. I think the Wonderfalls problem was actually the Tim Minear Curse.
craizydaizy3
hey guys! Love the new promo. SO pumped for this show...actually Im excited for pretty much everything ABC on Wednesday nights!
sweetjane
The new preview looks fantastic. I love the look of the show and the Burton-esque feel. I'm still VERY wary of ABC though. Last year was dismal with new show cancellations and I agree that this show looks too good to be true. Let's hope ABC handles this right. They need to jump on all the upfront hype now (but use it wisely). Speaking of which, here are a couple more critics' mentions:

USA Today's Robert Bianco: ABC: 'Daisies' is the one to pick out of overcrowded field
You have to hand it to ABC. Then you have to take it away.

As with the last two seasons, ABC seems to have the fall's most intriguing, most discussed and flat-out best new series: Pushing Daisies [...] is the most creative, inventive, enchanting pilot since Lost.

Daisies would be a standout in any year — but in a season that, on first impressions, looks weaker than most, Daisies practically screams, "I'm the one to watch."

Unfortunately, there's a very good chance that Daisies' pronouncement will be swamped by the chaos that is ABC's schedule. [...] the network just seems to be making it too hard for viewers to find a wonderfully cast, wonderfully written novelty that is likely to need nurturing and patience.

NY Daily News' David Bianculli: Clips give hints at late bloomers
Based on first impressions, ABC's new fall series "Pushing Daisies" is one to watch.
[...]
On paper, the premise sounds stupid, even terrible - but "Pushing Daisies" is on TV, not paper. A guy named Ned (Lee Pace) develops the mysterious power to revive the dead with one touch - with the caveat that a second touch from Ned will take that life away forever.

What do you do with a fantasy concept like that? Writer-producer Bryan Fuller (one of the "Heroes" collaborators) and director Barry Sonnenfeld ("Men in Black") treat it like a vivid, oddball fairy tale. It looks like Tim Burton's "Edward Scissorhands," and has the instant charm and goofy sense of humor of "The Addams Family," the movie versions of which were directed by Sonnenfeld.

It looks great, and looks to be the most pleasant surprise of the 2007 fall season.
silentwilight
Add me on the train of those who loved the new promo.

It made me feel really happy for some reason.
It reminded me of the way I feel when I watch Life on Mars (a completely different show but I'm always happy when I watch it). Now that Life on Mars is over, I also have that void.

Also, I was looking up pictures of the hotness that is Lee Pace and found cute pics of him and Anna Friel at Getty.
It's nice to see they get along :)
akg
I love the narrator! The narration fits perfectly with the theme and the feel/look of the show and it's not just a VO to have a VO, it's really part of the story. And it also helps a lot that he's not American, it just adds another layer to the show.

The narrator is Jim Dale who reads the Harry Potter books for cd (American version). I prefer the British sets (I love Stephen Fry) but he's the perfect voice for this show.
BrainyBlonde
I'm totally beside myself over that trailer. I've watched it five times this morning. I love that it's quirky, romantic, funny, poignant, and even has some mystery. Lee Pace and Anna Friel are perfection as the leads. I'm already rooting for their characters to get together, somehow, some way.

Is there a premiere date for PD yet?

Was Lee Pace a regular on Wonderfalls? If so, maybe I should Netflix the DVDs this summer and acquaint myself with his work? I take it that everyone here would recommend Wonderfalls? I loved Dead Like Me, so if Wonderfalls is in the same vein, I'm sure I'd like it.
Illyria B

I prefer Jim Dale reading Harry Potter, he just adds a little more to the characters when he's reading and I guess already being familiar with him does help loving the narration for Pushing Daisies as well. I hope people in general (the ones with Nielsen boxes) won't mind that the narrator is British.

I'm still VERY wary of ABC though.

It must be a very long time since I cared about a show on ABC, because worrying about cancellation right away sounds like FOX to me. But looking back at the number of shows ABC has cancelled in recent years it does look worrying. The Wednesday lineup that PD is part of is also very risky, it's 3 new shows and they seem to be banking on the success of Private Practice - a show I think looks awful. I really hope ABC is behind this show and is going to let it find an audience, becuase as fantastic as it looks it's a niche show.

Was Lee Pace a regular on Wonderfalls?

Yes, he plays the brother of the main character Jaye. I love DLM, and it's definitley in the same vein, but I the love I have for Wonderfalls is even greater. It's by far superior to DLM and you should definitley watch it.

Is there a premiere date for PD yet?

Not a date yet, just September.
