I liked that more than I thought I might. I thought it might be just idle celebrity gossip, but there's some useful information, although I'm not about to start worrying about matching the curtain with the drapes. What brand of high heel shoes were those that didn't hurt?
jo_tornblade
I thought she did a good job, and has potential in this format.

However - did anyone else get an infomercial vibe from this? I don't know if it was the cadence, the pacing, or how it was recorded, but I expected Alyssa Milano and Melissa Gilbert to come out at any minute to shill for "SheerCover" cosmetics.
fashionista79
jo_tornblade, I think that informercial-y vibe probably came from the fact that there was a lot of product pimping going on. Plus, there were the giveaways. However, I did like the show. I also loved the empire waist dress that Stacy wore especially with those navy d'Orsay heels.
MollyDodd
I kinda liked it. As I just said in the WNTW thread, I think I might actually kind of like the real Stacy London, the one who's not scripted to be mean. She seemed a little stiff and insincere tonite, but that could just be opening night jitters. A lot was packed into the hour, it was fast and fun. I'd watch again.

More like a high end cable access show - the way it was edited, especially in the beginning, drove me insane. I did like the segment about wearing the trends in the real world...my sister and I saw a pair similar to the metallic leggings and we wondered who in the hell would wear it. I think Stacy did a pretty good job, but with the hair and the dress, she seemed to be lacking a neck.

daisycat71, I don't remember the brand shown tonight, but I know Cole Haan makes some high heels shoes with Nike Air technology.
Hopeless
Some of the editing annoyed me, too -- and yes, infomercial or cable-access do seem to describe it well. Just too up close with people cheering too excitedly all the time. But it was better than I was expecting, I think.

I also liked the bit with wearing the trends; those girls had some guts to go out in public in those things, but particularly the metallic leggings (I liked the ladies cracking up in the grocery store). But the carpet and drapes discussion was more info than I cared to have -- and that poor junior high teacher if her students find out.

I didn't really like Stacey's empire-waist dress; at some angles it was okay, but other times it really irritated me. And I think the one on her friend from the magazine was really not the most flattering cut for her. And the 5 must-haves for spring? A super-long, floaty sundress? Pants with a higher rise and that show some ankle? These are exactly the sorts of things that Stacey and Clinton have been forcing people to junk for years on What Not To Wear! I know it's not their fault -- working in the fashion world with these ridiculous fads and recycled trends must be incredibly frustrating (because at some level it's their job, particularly for Stacey on this new show, to say these things are great).

Generally liked it. It seemed a little forced and self-conscious, but then all talk shows start out that way. They get more relaxed and natural as time goes on.

It would have been nice to see some graphics or at least some text about the stuff they were giving away. The items went by pretty fast and I didn't get a good look at them. I don't think they even said the brand name of hair-down-there dye. (Why the world needs that is a whole other discussion.)

I noticed at the opening that Stacy said the show would be about gossip and relationships, besides fashion. I kind of hope they don't bother with that. There's plenty of other places to get talk show style gossip and advice on relationships. I enjoyed this show because it's just about stuff and didn't make any pretenses to be about anything else. This is the same reason I like Lucky Magazine. All stuff and nothing but the stuff.

Loved the fashion slave segment.

Here's all the info on the products shown and given away:

I love Stacy, loved the show. Can't wait to see more!

I really liked this, and I'm a little disappointed that my TiVo doesn't show another episode coming up. TLC's website doesn't seem to say anything about it, either.

I loved the giveaways, the audience participation, and the focus on fashion. However, there were some skirt + camera angle problems, both with Jane Krakowski, and with Stacy in Lisa Rinna's shop.
bagatelle1
I came here to see if anyone else got that "infomercial" vibe. I think it was partly the editing, but also, something about the scripted discussion. Even the audience seemed handpicked and professional, as if they were paid to sit there and act enthused.

I believe the show is slated for the fall; this was just a little preview, to get us all psyched for it.
Kittenrescue
I hope they continue to provide a comprehensive list of the products shown on the show.

I've used the Sally Hansen nail shine and I like it.

When I was watching the 'down there' hair color segment I thought of the "Sex and the City" episode where Samantha dyed hers (because she'd found a couple of gray hairs) and it turned Bozo orange. LOL
Maisonette
Thought the show was great fun, a nice balance of silly and smart.

Loved that she gave us a brief glimpse of her teenage self (in the intro). Oh my! That girl as come LONG way. Gives ya hope.
queenofdarkness
Oh Stacy, I really do love you, but why were your shoulders hunched up to your ears through this entire episode? And why pick a dress that makes me wonder if you're pregnant?

Usually LOVE what she's wearing and find her choices unusual and inspired, but that was a hot mess. And for the pilot? Oy...

Empire waists will be mocked mercilessly by the 2020's "what were they WEARING back then?!? LOL" crowd.
fposte
And then they'll be the in thing in 2030. That's the problem--part of the point of fashion is to separate those in the current know from those out of it, so it depends on deriding stuff it's formerly lionized and vice versa.

I thought the show was actually pretty lame; I was another who thought it felt like an informercial, and not a polished one (speaking of which, did we ever hear about the drying of the Sally Hansen polish?). I didn't actually think the shoe designer sounded particularly knowledgeable or impressive, and I suspect there are a lot of other high heel shoes that are as comfortable as hers. Admittedly, that's pretty much how fashion magazines work too--pimp the advertisers and shut up about competitors--but it's still pretty sleazy.

I thought Jane Krakowski was much more magnetic than Stacy (I'm not particularly a Jane K. fan, but I thought the difference between her and Stacy in front of this audience was considerable). And I too noticed the tendency of Stacy's shoulders to try to eat her neck; I thought it was a posture thing involving hunched shoulders rather than a dress thing, so it might be harder to fix in this kind of format.
Puds38
I caught this and liked it. I think they need to tone down the giveaways a bit, but with a little more polish this show has potential.
queenofdarkness

I dunno, I've never noticed this on WNTW. It was so marked that its really kind of odd - what the hell was that about?
Nailbiter
I think she was hunching because she was nervous. I'm hoping it was also just nerves that made her seem so fake and smarmy, which she usually isn't on WNTW. This show could be good if Stacy would just relax. I liked the bit about trying to wear uber-trendy stuff in real life. But the thing with the, uh, intimate hair dye made me uncomfortable, only because that audience member could possibly get fired for talking about it on the show. The celebrity interviews I just skipped altogether.

Oh! Another thing that bugged was the beginning when Stacy kept saying it was a party. No, it isn't.
45 is the new 30
I think that Stacy did a good job overall (and I think her stiffness/stiltedness will abate eventually), but the frenetic pace was a little exhausting even to watch (monologue! give-away! make-over! fashion tip! give-away! interview with "close-and-personal-celeb-friend! more give-away!) I don't know how they could possibly program a jam-packed show like that each week; maybe Stacy keeled over from exhaustion and that's why there are no other episodes scheduled?

Fortunately, Stacy limited her "Shut UP!" shtick to only one or two recurrences for the entire episode. IMO, that "Shut UP!" squeal can grate, and would have gotten old verrrrry quickly.

I did think it was nice that her mom and dad were in the audience, and that Stacy gave them a quick hug before and after the program. It was sweet without being squicky like Robin McGraw's constant presence in the "Dr. Phil" audience. Is Stacy not married/involved with anyone?

Did that opening montage of photographs-with-voice-over remind anyone else of Rabbi Schmuley's opening to Shalom in the Home? Okay, just me then? ... (Heh! What do you think that Stacy would think of being compared with Shmuley Boteach in any way, shape, or form??)

fposte: I thought of the opening of Rhoda. I don't know if Stacy would consider that better or worse.

Hmmm ... Nebbishy bearded Rabbi with a whiny voice and scruffy beard, or a zoftig, scarf-wearing, wanna-be boho - tough call, LOL!

Oh! Another thing that bugged was the beginning when Stacy kept saying it was a party. No, it isn't.

Big word to that. That bit felt like she's was trying waaaay too hard.

I also concur with the infomercial feel. For me, what bugged were the cut-aways to the audience clapping that were obviosuly spliced in. Like, Stacy says something with zero background noise - quick cut to the audience full-on clapping. Very fakey-fakey.

However, I do think this show has potential and think they will work out the kinks. I remember watching the first episode of Martha Stewart's show: while she's still a little awkward now, the first couple shows were nearly painful to watch. Stacey is already light years ahead of Martha.
Double Delight
I actually liked it, admittedly my expectations were low. The thing that bugged through the show were Stacy's shoulders. Maybe she just has an abnormally short neck, but her shoulders were constantly up to her ears! And that dress wasn't too flattering on her. It made her boobies look like potatoes in a sock.

Oh and I really didn't need to see metalic leggins lady's buttcrack.
Mama Tiger
Stacy was clearly trying too hard. Maybe it was nerves, maybe it was just her idea of how she thought she should act, but it seriously bugged. Not just the hunched shoulders, but the way she spoke was so affected, it drove me crazy.

Those "comfortable" heels looked ugly to me -- the way the heels were angled was just weird. I do want to try that Clinique lip stuff, though; it sounds really useful.

But the show does have possibilities if Stacy can learn to relax. And wear less fugly clothes. She can look fabulous in the right outfit, but that definitely wasn't it.
WhatTheElle
I think part of the infomercial feel comes from the set. It has that echoey, shiny generic soundstage feel and sound with the main set piece just floating in the middle of a cavernous black high ceiling space. And the cheesy transitional music? shut up! No really, please! I kept waiting for Emeril to pop out and yell BAM! If they can make the set/soundstage a little more . . . lived in, grounded, bright, fashionable, or something, it would feel more like a talk show. The cutting and pacing was also interesting. I think it is hard to hit a good balance between pre-recorded location pieces and in- house, live audience segments. The show felt a little mpd (multiple personality disorder.) "We're a fashion how to show, we're a fashion talk show, we're a how to show, we're a talk show." Hey Sybil, pick one and let me talk to her. I want there to be a dominant personality to the show. It makes me feel more secure. I just never really liked variety shows I guess. If Stacy does an ice skating/singing finale in purple sequins with a puppet I will bail. (unless Donny Osmond is involved.)

I must admit that I really do like Stacy. I thought she was really genuine and funny in a lot of the show, especially the taped stuff. Maybe she just needs time to relax for the live stuff. I will be watching it when it comes back in the fall.

(psst ... stace ... I thought that designer said Lemonaded Lace too. hee!)
AugustBaby
All in all, I thought it was a good show. I will definitely be watching again. I could have also done without the metallic legging lady's butt crack. And the 8th grade teacher who admitted to dyeing her pubes....what the hell was she thinking!?! I don't know of an 8th grader who will be comfortable knowing this information. I think she made a big mistake going on tv and talking about that. Stacy's "no neck" look was bugging me, too. I felt almost like she was uncomfortable with her height and was trying to hunch over to downplay it.
alldressedup
A piece of crap that had me cringing the entire hour. Why was Stacey so crazed? so effin' annoying? All that applause was soooo infomercially and there were too many guests. I actually think if the show will be detrimental to her reputation.
Ashforth
oops.
Traderex
My Tivo listed her show as scheduled last week, but it never taped it. I went to TLC's website and it only shows the first epi. Is it already cancelled?!
audrey hepburn
Is it already cancelled?!

Traderex, that was just the pilot episode. I haven't heard whether it's been included in TLC's fall scheduling. I guess we can keep checking in at TLC to see if the show made it (they might also offer free tickets for a taping again!).

Btw: Chiming in late, but despite a few bugs and snags, I enjoyed the show. It needs to be re-worked, but I could see tuning in weekly.
45 is the new 30
And the 8th grade teacher who admitted to dyeing her pubes....what the hell was she thinking!?!

Right there with you in the "what the hell was she thinking" camp! Geesh, why would ANYONE, much less a middle school teacher, go on television and share that particular info?? Internal filters are a very, VERY good thing to develop!

The more I get some distance between myself and my original viewing of this show, the more I hope that the producers vastly retool the execution of this vehicle for Stacy; they need to discard the "infomercial" feel, and dial the frenetic emoting and action waaaay back.
twinmom
I saw promos (every commercial break!) on TLC for Fashionably Late with Stacy London. Is that what Shut Up! has been retooled into?
jo_tornblade
I think so. I think Shut Up! was just a trial balloon. Hopefully they've taken note of the criticism and tried to improve it. Getting rid of her catch phrase is a good start - hearing "Shut Up" multiple times in an hour was annoying as heck.
Lovecat
Fashionably Late (re)debuted tonight...did anyone tune in? I flicked across it a few times, but was having a short attention span night, so I didn't stay put long enough to formulate an opinion. Those "straight off the runway" segments crack me up, though!
xsandlapper
but was having a short attention span night, so I didn't stay put long enough to formulate an opinion.

Me too and I didn't even go shopping all day! I hope they repeat it. I watched a little of it. The chairs looked so uninviting but then I basically loathe the current styles. I will watch again. Cannot watch her other show. Bargain shopper here lol.

So she started this show last summer? What happened between then and now?
RealChic1999
Me too and I didn't even go shopping all day! I hope they repeat it. I watched a little of it.

They usually repeat the 10 o'clock shows about 2-3 hours after its first airing. I'm looking out for the second airing now because I spent the last half of the show washing my dreads.

From what I saw, the new set is much more sedate (maybe a little too sedate?), but I still think Stacy's awkward. Hopefully she'll relax into her role. I still love the "straight off the runway" segments and loved that convertible shoe she showed (three-inch heel into a 1.5-inch one? Shut up!). I thought she was a little too jerky with one of the women modeling a convertible outfit (the woman missed her mark and Stacy yanked her into place).

I don't know about having a bar on the set. I do see Stacy as a cosmopolitan girl (in moderation, at least) and thought it was odd that she did a shot with Rebecca Romijn. And RR looks/acts more like a man in a woman's body in real life than she does as such on "Ugly Betty."

ETA: Here's someone's write-up on her experience at a taping of the show. And the comments on this one from people who attended the taping are a mixed bag.

And another edit---the application to request tickets for the show. One of the questions on the application is:

DO YOU LONG FOR FULLER, BIGGER BREASTS? ARE YOU WILLING TO
TRY A NEW PRODUCT THAT BOASTS AN ENHANCED CHEST IN 30 DAYS?

No thanks...
Orion7
So she started this show last summer? What happened between then and now?

There was only one tryout episode aired last summer, presumably to see if there was enough interest to put the show into production. It looks as if there was.

I enjoyed it, on the whole. It's not something I have to watch, but it was a fine distraction for a tired-out me on Friday night. Stacy looked gorgeous in that gold dress, and I think she handled herself well for the most part.
audrey hepburn
I never thought the original (pilot) was all that bad. It needed to be tweaked here and there, but I thought that it was a good concept. Loved SL's metallic dress and the ginormous ring was stunning. And as gimmicky as it seemed I'd love to try out the Calvin Tram 13-pieces in one black convertible skirt/wrap. In fact, I covet the thing. The bartender thing was a bit odd. Odd, but certainly unique (I guess it's a heck of a lot cheaper than hiring a house band). The Chic or Shred segment was not entertaining. I know that it meant to be funny, but came off as mean-spirited and humiliating for the participant (even if they did get another replacement). I still find the show's pacing too frenetic and as I've said in the past, Stacy should try to relax more. I'll definitely watch future epis because it is the only show of its kind and it is about fashion.

ETA: How many times does she need to mention that she's done red-carpet events and has been to the Emmy's?
GeorgePBurdell
ETA: Here's someone's write-up on her experience at a taping of the show. And the comments on this one from people who attended the taping are a mixed bag.

The woman who wrote of her experience at the show and complained about the freaking jacket? Ridiculous. Did the show OWE you that jacket, honey? Didn't think so. People who win something or are given something for free and then want to complain about it just exhaust me. Be grateful. Give the jacket to someone who will fit into it and shut your piehole. That whole entitlement thing just pisses me off.

Sorry. I have a headache. I do feel better now, though.
fposte
Definitely not for me. It reminded me too much of fashion magazines; I felt like there was so much about sucking up to the names and shilling for them and virtually no substance. I thought "Chic or Shred?" actually had a wee bit of possibility as it was one of the few segments that needed actual television to work, but since it was really not an "or" segment after all it was something that also could have been done with no loss in print. I adored Stacey's dress, and I thought Rebecca Romijn was a very generous guest who came across well--she's nobody whose career particularly interests me, and she still managed to make me think well of her. But overall, it's just toooooo much froth for me, like an hour-long squee.
isiscloud
The pacing was horrendous, way too frenetic. It was a little too much like Oprah's give-aways. Loved the Lancome segment.

The vodka shot was definitely odd, especially since I watched it this afternoon rather than last night! I liked the bartender aspect, but maybe a juice bar would be more appropriate if you don't want to look like a lush!

The chic/shred was annoying because there never will be a "chic" piece that they bring! What the heck was that red thing that one woman with the cowboy boots had?

ETA: I may watch for the shredder operator, though
RealChic1999
The chic/shred was annoying because there never will be a "chic" piece that they bring!

Instead of shredding something, they should reconsruct it into something else. I saw a cute skirt that could've been made out of that blouse the second woman brought out. Don't they do reconstructs on Isaac Mizrahi's show (I haven't seen it in a while since I don't have Style Network)?

I thought about applying to be an audience member for the freebies, but then remembered that I'd have to pay gift tax on them (especially if we get a pricy jacket in the end), so never mind. And I don't have an interest in getting bigger breasts or using female Viagra, so I'll pass.

I liked the bartender aspect, but maybe a juice bar would be more appropriate if you don't want to look like a lush!

A juice bar would've been a cool idea, especially for a teetolater like myself. But the bartender himself---albeit cute---was too dull for the camera. He seemed nervous and uncomfortable. I guess Stacy was looking for a Paul Shafer-type, but that's not happening with him.

This was mentioned in the "What Not to Wear" thread---Stacy's aversion towards thrift stores. The last woman for "Chic or Shred?" was a nutjob, but that nasty look Stacy gave when she mentioned finding Armani for $2 was uncalled for. If someone told me they found a name brand for that cheap I'd say "You go girl!"
raina1049
Well it looks like there's going to be a new show next Friday. I saw promos with Angie Harmon as a guest.
Matryoshka
Admittedly I know nothing about shredders, but did it seem to anybody else that all the shredded bits flying out were the same color? Shouldn't they have matched each article of clothing thrown in at the other end?
Orion7
I noticed that too, especially with the pair of pants that were bright blue and green. It all looked like wood chips coming out.
audrey hepburn
Don't they do reconstructs on Isaac Mizrahi's show (I haven't seen it in a while since I don't have Style Network)?

Alas, Poor Isaac's show is out there in Style Network's landfill of formerly amazing programs. I loved my ISAAC. (before it went to the dreadful 30-minute format) Anyway, yes, Isaac did have a segment where he would advise audience menbers how to recontruct, deconstruct or re-style garments and accessories. It was great.

Admittedly I know nothing about shredders, but did it seem to anybody else that all the shredded bits flying out were the same color? Shouldn't they have matched each article of clothing thrown in at the other end?

HA! noticed that as well.

ETA: Did anyone else notice how insane the laugh-track for the show was? Who were they trying to kid?
MadameBovary
I actually faux-tivoed the show and thought about going until I read from one of the audience members the cocktails were non-alcoholic. I'll pass. It is a fun show but like someone mentionned much like reading a fashion mag. I'll stick with Vogue for now, I might learn something and have a real Martini at the same time.
littlechloe
I watched part of the show and it just seemed to be a rip-off of Isaac except Isaac was alot better.
RealChic1999
LA Times review of the show.
xavier03
I thought the show was all over the map and too fast paced for my liking. So many segments crammed into one show. I like Stacy but I thought she was trying too hard to be funny. Loved her dress though. The segment with Rebecca felt a little awkward. RR seemed a little embarassed by all the gushing. The shredding seemed like stock footage to me.....Despite all of this, I'll give it another try next week.
