Well, before Tubey had a stroke we were in the planning stages for a new Star Trek Survival Game. This game will feature the greatest marriages, couples, and one-time Oomox encounters in the five series run of Star Trek. Suggestions for couples will take place prior to the start of game-play and any couple can be considered for the game. It doesn't matter if they were in a serious commitment, or if they were only together for one day of enjoyment. However, those couples who were morally repugnant and vile may be excluded based on a simple majority decision.

It has been decided that we will have a separate romance game for each of the Star Trek series. In order to prevent each game from running too long and keep interest at a high it has been determined that each game should be limited to 16-20 couples per round.

Round 1 will feature the best lovers from TOS. Please review the list below and make suggestions as to who should be included and who should be removed. Please help correct the names of the couples, as well. The game will, most likely, start sometime after midnight Thursday morning (EST).

I'm not as familiar with TOS as I am with TNG or ENT, but are there no pairings for Scotty, Uhura, or Sulu? Didn't Scotty have someone in the episode where he was on trial for murder? I'm in favor of having at least one pairing for each main character if possible. I'd favor removing non-main-cast pairings (like the Mudds or Gary Seven and Roberta) to favor the main cast ones. Also, Nurse Chapel and Spock? Surely we must!

Also, are we only going for actual hook-ups now? That's what the following quotes suggest to me, and it seems pairings like Picard and Dr. Crusher would be excluded.
Also again, does "any couple" mean we're now including ho-yay, or is that being saved for a later ho-yay/bro-mance only round? Because ho-yay adds a whole new host of pairings, especially Kirk and Spock for this round. Sorry with the so many "also" questions.

Chekov and Irini: I believe she was his former flame from the hippie episode. I think we should definitely include that one since it's his only pairing. I remember Cochrane and terminally ill chick, but I'd be for taking them out since neither are main characters.

I'm for saving ho-yay for another round, especially since absolutely none of it is textual, and ho-yay is so easy to run with. Reed and Archer, Reed and Trip, Reed and Major Hayes, Daniels and Archer, Mayweather and Reed, etc., etc., etc. And that's just ENT off the top of my head.

Are we still limiting it to actual hook-ups then, because there were other romances that were never consummated, like Garak and Ziyal or Riker and Minuet.

I would like to get rid of a couple of the Kirk ones. I get worn out just thinking about how much sex that guy was having.


This is one that can go, I think. Kirk makes out with her a bit when they use that twirling lights thingy on Kirk to make him think he's madly in love with her.


That's the one where they find this guy on a planet with "the Companion," a cloudlike creature. In the end, the Companion inhabits Elinor Donahue's body, and the two of them stay on the planet together or something. Pretty romantic.

Oh, let's keep this! It's the hippy episode....Eden, etc. It's the only one for Chekov.

I would like to see a Scotty and Uhuru and Sulu, if anyone can find them. For Uhuru, the only one I can think of is where she was forced to make out with Kirk.

I don't think we have to stick with exactly 20, and I second the idea of including Spock and Nurse Chapel.

"Wolf in the Fold" is the episode I was thinking of for Scotty, but they don't list the name of the woman he was interested in the plot synopsis. Does anyone recognize her name from the character/cast list?

I vote for Uhura and Kirk as a pairing, in that order. I got a sense from her several times before the kiss that she may have romantically admired him.

I'd say staying power or emotional impact on the characters should also be considered. Also, I've just never been one to think that sex and romance meant exactly the same thing: one can have romance without sex and sex without romance. Since the thread is titled romance, I'm in favor of including non-sexual romances. Arguing what may have developed takes us down a rocky road, I think. But I'll bow to the majority (even though I really like the Garak and Ziyal romance).

Gilmel, I found this on the web: "Scotty, Kirk, and McCoy beam down to Orgellius II for therapeutic shore leave. There, they enjoy Orgellian hospitality and belly-dancing. Scotty becomes enthralled with the belly-dancer Kara and invites her for a romantic walk in the fog. Shortly thereafter, Kara is found stabbed to death, with Scott in shock nearby holding the murder weapon. His fingerprints are the only ones on the murder weapon, and he has both a concussion and amnesia."

I'd add Scotty and Mira Romaine (Lettuce) from "Lights of Zetar," but other than that, I can't think of another canon couple for TOS.

Okay, I looked them up and now know who they are, except for Nancy Carter and Roger Corby since I couldn't find them on startrek.com. Somehow I though Spock's fiancee was going to be one of those pairings, too. Shows how detailed a TOS Trekkie I'm not. :)

I removed Spock and T'Pring early on because, as I recall, she wasn't interested in having a relationship with Spock and manipulated the situation, so she could marry Stonn.

I also left off Uhura and Kirk, since that was a forced encounter and there was no real romance that I could see between them. Also, because NN has been quite vocal in her hate of that kiss. We could always remove Gary Seven and add Uhura and Scotty from ST:V.

Did we ever learn who Sulu fathered Demora with?

Am I the only one that saw a possible romance between Sulu and Uhura? In "The Naked Time", in particular? The first thing he does when he gets sick is rush to the bridge to defend her honor with a sword, and I swear there was a bit of dialogue about them having a date or something.

I definitely think we need more than just character names to jog memories. Some brief descriptive is necessary for many of these characters, and that goes across all series, not just this one.

And she was a taunting, knife-wielding wench in Mirror, Mirror!!

Wikipedia makes an interesting point: Sulu was the only male TOS cast member never shown in any sort of relationship with a woman (which in Trek world means no relationships at all). I wonder if Takei had anything to do with that.

(Exceptions are a TAS episode, sort of, and a novel giving the name of Demora's mother.)

Relationship Hell
Khan and Marla McGivers - Space Seed

After 3 years on the godforsaken planet being smacked around and constantly called inferior, Marla couldn't take it anymore. She collected several leaves of a plant known to be fatally poisonous and made Khan dinner, making sure to leave her own food untainted. As they sat down to dinner, Marla couldn't shake off a pounding headache, but she was still in good spirts because she knew the source of most of her troubles would be gone soon. She regretted ever helping him years ago. Ironically, Khan complimented her cooking, something he rarely did. However, the pounding in her head kept getting worse and her fingers and toes were getting numb. Soon, Khan had a massive seizure and died on the spot. Unfortunately, what Marla hadn't realized was that the poison could be absorbed through the skin. Had she been gentically enhanced, the amount of poison she'd absorbed probably wouldn't have killed her, but she wasn't, so it did. Within an hour, she was totally paralyzed, and within two she was dead.

"Androids don't eat, Nurse Chapel," Korby said- again. Enough was enough. It was spooky and dramatic the first time, but not the hundredth. "I certainly hope they can die," Chapel snapped as she shoved Korby's fingers into the nearest electric outlet.

Unfortunately, she forgot that she'd been replaced with a robot too. After a few seconds of sparks and flames, it was all over.

Kirok grabbed Miramanee and pulled her to his side. The tribesmen continued to throw stones at the couple, who were helpless and exposed on the platform next to the Preserver obelisk. "Stop! Please stop!" cried Miramanee. "How can you do this to him? He is your God!"

"He is no god!" shouted the tribal elder. "He is the captain of a starship!" Kirk blinked, and suddenly, his memory snapped back to normal. "Wait," said Kirk, tilting his head in curiosity, "How did you know that?" The stoning stopped for a moment. "Oh come on," said the elder, "do you think we haven't had visits from other starship captains who stop in for a little Indian princess nookie?" Kirk looked at Miramanee and blushed a little. "But I really did have amnesia," he said to the elder. "I didn't mean any harm." "We know that," said the elder. "Then why are you throwing rocks at us?" shouted Miramanee.

"It's not because of the 'false god' thing," said the elder. "We just can't take the overacting anymore." They resumed the barrage and Kirk and Miramanee were stoned to death.
