Well, I tried to think of a clever topic title to restart things, since the entire thread was wiped out, but my imagination failed me. Besides, the show title itself is odd enough/clever enough to stand on its own. :)
Anyways, re-watched the pilot with my wife last night, and liked it even more the second time around. And just to note: New episodes are airing on Wednesdays at 8, with repeats the following Monday at 9. Didn't realize that, and the Rogers cable interactive guide was not helpful.

And I even had to leave How I Met Your Mother off of my taping schedule this week 'cause I thought it was a new episode of Little Mosque. Ah, well. New episode tomorrow, at least.

Ah, so that explains it, I wondered why there wasn't a new episode last night, the papers all talked as if there was a new episode.
Anyway, I still find the show charming.

Well, this show has just won itself a new convert (no pun intended). I watched it for the first time tonight and loved it. Funny and refreshing. I think my favorite part was when he asked for something to push her off with. I finally have a show I can watch on Wednesdays!

oops I didn't see that someone else started the new topic, I never started a new topic, and then I mess it up, oops again
I thought tonight was very smart and funny, better than last week.
Also very sexy, ok between an old married couple, but Ill take that, its good to see that portrayed on TV.
Some good lines tonight.

yes that got a good laugh from me as well

"No, now he works for the United Church."
I guffawed at that. I was surprised they went there, it's mostly so carefully inoffensive in that way one strand of Canadian comedy/culture is.
My second favourite line was "Are you taking the crack?" It wouldn't have been funny if it was anyone other than Baber who said it.

Baber had some good lines tonight. Also
"I made it through universtiy without shaking my boogie"
also glad he reconsidered on making his daughter wear the head scarf, wonder if he ever will
Also when his daughter told him that he had the "just off the boat look" and he asked if he looked sea sick
Some good writing tonight, liked the extra sexiness and a little political INcorrectness

Bell ExpressVue "guide info" option also showed Monday's episode as #2. But I did watch Hockey Day in Canada on Saturday, and the 5 billion ads for LMoTP all kept promoting Wednesday, so I was kind of expecting it.

Now I feel guilty admitting my deep and abiding crush on Carlo Rota (and his voice). I'd be happy listening to him read a phone book.
To me the biggest weakness is Sitara Hewitt, who plays Rayyan - I find her too broad in her gestures, which seem better suited for the stage than a TV show.

All I can think of is that the United Church of Canada is rather on the liberal side (though the ANglican Church is by NO MEANS conservative either...any church that ordains women is NOT conservative)

Technically speaking, I'm a member of the United Church. (I say technically because I haven't regularly attended in over 15 years.) The UC is undoubtedly the most liberal of the large Christian denominations in Canada. We ordain anybody who feels the call, both men & women, heterosexual or homosexual, celibate or not.
Haven't gotten around to seeing the whole episode yet, but I liked the first bits.

It would be interesting to see how this show would play in the US. After barely watching the A&E sanitized version of Sopranos (Tony saying "Ah Nuts" when he kicks a guy) I can imagine what would happen to most of the politically incorrect, self-scewering and delicate humour of this show.
The scenes where Babar says that his daughter doesn't have to wear the headscarf until she has her menses. Then in one of the following scenes she is taking off her track pants and sees the "mark of the menses" (which is no implied) and stuffs the pants under her bed. Then Babar, while unpacking her new clothes, finds a wrapped pad.
No words are spoken... so how will they overdub this part?
Ya gotta love being part of a country that has Little Mosque and Air Farce - even if they did leave in the Saddam jokes the day after the hanging. If it's funny it's funny and damn the pc.

I think you're making the US networks to be worse than they are. Shows like
Arrested Development and
The Office were/are very politically incorrect. And smarter, actually, than
Little Mosque on the Prairie. I watched the first two episodes and while there were some good lines, most of the humor is predictable and the acting is mediocre. They still haven't accurately depicted Muslim life, but I'm willing to give it a few more chances.
Also, Sitara Hewitt is really hot.

I agree. I like the show, but I don't think it's politically incorrect at all (except maybe with the occasional line). It treads pretty carefully. A girl getting her period doesn't strike me as particularly risque for American TV.
As another technical member of the UCC, I loved the pot crack -- and yes, I'm pretty sure it was just supposed to refer to the fact that the UCC is probably the most lefty denomination around. One of my history profs used to refer to it as "the NDP at prayer," which is pretty accurate. (thinking back to the days when we had an official delegation publicly praying for Mike Harris' soul at Queen's Park...and the fact that so many NDP and CCF MPs/MPPs are or were UCC ministers)
The line could have been a reference to Cheri DiNovo, drug smuggler turned UCC minister turned NDP MPP, but I think it was meant to be more general.

Never got around to posting my thoughts on Episode 2. I liked it. Carlo & Zaib look like they're developing a decent comedic chemistry as Yassir & Amaar. And they actually gave Babar some character development! That he actually said "there's always next month" in regards to his daughter wearing the hijab gives me hope that there's a little more to the guy than his conservatism.
Looking forward to the 31st/

Finally got around to seeing the episode. I gotta say, it's a pleasure to see Derek McGrath on my television set again. (What can I say... I liked My Secret Identity. At least the seasons after Season One, which was just painful.)
Yassir continues to be amusingly self-serving. Loved how Amaar talked him around to the open house by mentioning he could network for his business. And the whole remark of "I am a very good contractor. Which is why I know I am the last person I would want trying to fix this."
Amaar continues to impress me. I like the friendship that he and the Reverend have struck up, and his trials and travails with his new parishioners are great.
The stuff between Rayyan, Sarah and the curious woman was also fun. Loved how Sarah was completely undercutting Rayyan without really meaning to.
Really looking forward to next week's show. Looks like fun. And Fatima's bathing suit is awesome! :-)

I like that part as well. The experienced one providing advice to the rookie, including how to not be so hard on yourself and keep a sense of humour when things don't go well when you are in charge. Although I'm not sure the wisecrack "take the dead body around back" was really all that helpful to make Amaar relax!
I think that it would be a nice plot progression to have Amaar return the favour and help the Reverend out at some point. I think the blurb about one of the future episodes implies that this will happen.

I watched part of an episode of this show for the first time tonight. I didn't mind it...the humour was cute. Part of the main character's lines felt cheesy. I think it has a bit of potential. At least they try to explore the themes in a respectable and funny way.
I watched the episode when the open house occurs (and falls into shambles). I don't know how new the episode was.

That was quite funny. I don't know who's who but I like both girls. I found the way they ended the episode quite funny with the rolled up carpet and the old ladies walking down the street, eying suspiciously. "They're NOT dead bodies!" They walk a few steps, then turn back to eye suspiciously again. Hee.

Aw, that last episode was cute. They're definitely setting up some UST between the imam and Amaar's daughter. Loved Fatima's Muslim swimsuit, and that the lifeguard was nice to her about it. Minor nitpick: is Baber ever going to make his daughter observe hijab?
caper24
Feb 13, 2007 @ 4:07 pm
As far as Babar's daughter and the hijab... I hope not. Because it's the one sign that Babar has some tolerance for those who are less orthodox than he is. It could also be a somewhat charming sign that he's not ready for his daughter to grow up yet.
Well, the Halloween/swimming pool episode was a lot of fun. Fatima's bathing suit kicked ass. Yassir continues to be amusing. Rayyan and Amaar might have some fun romantic tension. And Sarah reaped some karmic rewards. Hee!

Tonight's episode had me giggling. Hilarious to see Baber out-orthodoxed ... out-Muslimed? Out-done? Whatever, it was funny. And I love the scenes between the priest and the imam, they've such an easy chemistry.

So far this episode had me grinning the most. And I must admit the crazy convert screaming 'Allahu Akbar' with his arms in the air gave me the giggles.
It seems like it's always the converts who are the most fanatical. It reminds me of a priest who was assigned to our parish when I was a kid. I'd never heard such 'fire and brimstone' sermons before and it turned out he wasn't born Catholic but converted later in life.

Some converts (of all religions) really do take it to the extreme don't they? It's like they almost find glee in pointing out the faults in the way their fellow believers practice their faith and they are going to show them all up by being the best Christian/Muslim/Jew/religion of their choice EVER. Amaar said it right about it taking some converts a few years to 'settle down'.
The wince from the minister as he listened to the sermon cracked me up.
I remember our priest wincing like that when the bishop spoke at our church once. Only I think it was more of a "Is there a point to this sermon and will you ever be getting to it?" kind of wince. I felt his pain.

I finally saw the "Convert" episode last night, and Mr. D. and I laughed out loud many times. I'm amazed how much I'm enjoying this show.
I thought the Mayor would start to grate on my nerves, in the first episode, but last night she was so funny. I loved how she smiled her phony, steely smile and said, "Look at me! I'm a Christian and I never let it affect me!" I'm enjoying seeing religious people being portrayed, for once, in a kind-hearted, affectionate way, and not solely as fanatics and psychopathic killers, as is the current norm.
