My Boys starts tonight and could possibly be the only good TBS original show created (leaving 10 Items or Less out since I haven't seen it yet). Considering the other original shows are either so horrible (The Real Gilligan's Island) or something you've never heard of (Feed Your Mind?), let's see if this redeems the network known only for WCW and some modern classic movies hosted by either a trailer living cowboy or a guy who looks like he lives at home and begs for sex and his friends.
So, hot chick, 6 guy friends? Only time will tell.

I'm just happy that Jim Gaffigan will be on my TV on a regular basis (providing this show does well). I love him. His stand-up is hilarious. "This guy's going to hell in two religions!"

I could be alone here but I really like it. It's so nice to hear a woman saying all the things about her male dates that I have said (or thought, but never had the ovaries to say).
It's so much realer than Sex in the City, where they always get what they want, and things are rarely awkward. I like awkward. It's my life.
This show is very close to reality, at least for me. Not sure if I like PJ, but I like her boys.

I think it's going to take a few episodes for us to get into the characters, the voice over worked in Sex in the City, but it irritates me here.

So far, so good.

Ok, the second episode made me glad I watched. Some really killer lines that made me laugh, ya know, underground. I took the week off from watching Boston Legal to see this and may have to make it more permenant if the shows maintain at least the quality of the second episode.

Not bad so far, but I'm having serious trouble imagining Bobby as a romantic lead. I remember him as such a high school weasel in Opposite Sex a couple years back opposite Milo Ventimiglia, Allison Mack and Chris Evans.
And PJ and Brandon are definitely going to hook up.

NumberSix: I totally forgot about that movie, and now I will have to rent it.
Seeing as how almost every girl I know likes to tell all the guys she knows that she hates other girls and that all her good friends are guys, i've come to realize how amazing this lie has become. Sure, it's gotta be true for some girls, but for others it's a way to make guy friends. Either way, it makes a great show and will be fun to see how PJ makes her way through the season.

Prada, that is so me and my boys! I saw an ad in Glamour, and had to watch the show. (as a matter of fact, I'm meeting up with my boys on Sat. to see the Rutgers/W.Va. game. Go Scarlet Knights!)
Anyway, I liked the show. The lead is cute, her interaction with her boys is realistic, and so was the awkwardness with Bobby. I'll be watching next week!

MrDerek, it was the TV show from 2001, not the movie from 1998. The movie is a waste of time. Lot of talent, poor execution.
I laughed my ass off when PJ was mocking Bobby during the 'seduction.'
"Is this really happening? What's going on? I don't do one night stands."
Any show with Jim Gaffigan is a good thing, and I unfortunately see way too much of Kenny in myself. What, coffee's a good start, right?

I guess it's nice for me, most of friends are girls, and the only guys friends I have are single because once they do have a girlfriend they stop hanging out all together.
Kyle Howard seems to be on a lot of shows that get canned pretty fast, hopefully this losing streak will end.

Yay! I liked it a bunch, as long as they don't pair up PJ and Brendan too soon. I liked Kyle Howard in "Related" (I think I was one of 3 people in the entire world that watched that show) and I'm happy to see him on this. Also, I think this is the only show that seems to reflect actors acting their actual real age, which is refreshing. I like how PJ actually does have a close friend in Stephanie as well, so as to not have her be the typical only friends with guys girl.

I think it's way less annoying than SaTC.
Not that I was overly impressed with this show, but it could never be worse than "Sex and the City." In a million, billion, gazillion years. I loathed that "comedy" for a million reasons. I'll list them all when I have more time. (Although here are a few hints: One, Sarah Jessica Parker. Two, Kim Cattrall...)
Anyway, about this show... I definitely didn't hate it. I loved the realistic way that the group of friends interacted with one another - really funny, and exactly how I interact with my group of guy friends.
What I DIDN'T like were the general "Home Improvement"-esque attempts at "gender commentary." Yes, men like sex. Girls like to feel pretty. I get it. I GET IT. Seriously! I! GET! IT! Maybe that would have been topical in 1996, as opposed to 2006. There's so much humor that can be mined from gender relations, that it frustrates me when shows decide to go back to the old "men hate commitment and women are overemotional" chestnut.
I guess it's no accident that I felt like pouring bleach into my ears everytime PJ's female friend was onscreen. She's so annoying, you guys.
But that Bobby person just needed to be punched in the face. Really? You're turned off because she's acting too much like a guy? Because she isn't acting virginal enough for your liking? And so she's the weird one? Yeah, good one, kid. Grow up.
Regardless, I really didn't hate the show. Only Bobby and PJ's female friend came off as walking stereotypes; the other characters are unmistakably "guys" but still manage to come off as actual PEOPLE. And Jordana Spiro is really charming (and cute - I'm superficial!). I'll definitely tune in next week.

I thought it was surprisingly good, and would have been much better if they cut out the Mars/Venus jokes.

Seriously. I hated how he came up to her
in the middle of a conversation, interrupted, and handed over a gift. WTF? I get that they were trying to set up the whole "underground" conflict, but they could have had Bobby make an affectionate gesture at work withouth making him seem like a third grader.

It was an okay way to spend the time between 10:00 and 11:00. I agree that they could tone down the Venus/Mars jokes and that Bobby didn't come off very well. He seemed to act as if his narrow view of gender roles and his fragile grasp on his own masculinity was her fault. I know that I wouldn't be able to get away with that. The show appeared to be trying to push PJ and Brendan together, as others have said. Personally, I don't care if or when they get together as long as PJ gets over Bobby.
Is Bobby really all that cute anyways? I don't swing that way, but I thought that Brendan was significantly better looking, and far more comfortable with both PJ and his whipped self.

The BF and I watched both eps last night and decided to give a few more weeks to see if we like it. The premise is awesome... it's definitely me and my guy friends (without the poker). And I really only have one other girlfriend that I'm that close to, so I could relate to PJ.
Count me among those who doesn't really think Kyle Howard is all that good looking. And I thought Bobby's "what did you think? Some girl is going to invite you to her apartment and jump you?" jab was totally inappropriate. As Mr. Glory pointed out - any girl that acted that way would have totally gotten laid, something's off with that guy.
And PJ and Brandon are definitely going to hook up.

I laughed at the boy/girl booty calls. There was definitely an aura of truth to that.
In sum: I liked the show, and will keep watching to see if it gets out of it's pilot awkwardness.

Overall, I really enjoyed the first two episodes. I'm a Midwesterner living in SoCal, so all of the Chicago stuff, plus the lack of palm trees and stucco were enough to pull my heartstrings and get me to root for this show.

Probably a wicked Madonna-Whore Complex, seeing as how he was so miffed that she wasn't all "Oh my gosh! This is so fast and unexpected. I've never done this before." Finishing the 2nd episode....pretty decent stuff. Didn't really expect much seeing that it was a TBS original series but was surprised. I was roped in because of the Chicago thing and the fact that she works for the Cubs(I hope they work some more real baseball talk into the show even though its the offseason, its obviously not on the show...they were talking about Rich Hill when they said something about a game in the first ep. or was that my imagination?). I also liked the fact that they mentioned the Billy Goat Tavern....lots of people who have never been to Chicago know that place though. Cant remember the names of the pizza places but im sure neither was Giordanos or Aurelio's.
The baseball analogies are fun especially to a huge baseball nut like me...but they will get repetative and annoying I would think. The show could really deal with some FXesque pushing the boundaries of censorship. Nip/Tuck, The Shield, and Rescue Me are awesome, but its their way to use being on non pay cable to their advantage that bumps them up to the next level. Im not saying that dropping the words "shit", "cock", and "tits" that you can't say on the networks makes a show better, but I think it would definitely add to the depth of PJ's character. She's one of the boys, so they need to reinforce in every way possible that she's not so girly. The producers of the show obviously knew that beer drinking and poker playing wasn't gonna be enough to enforce the point, seeing as how they had several different conversations debating PJ's level of girly(or is that girlie...damn you and your billboards the CW!!!). Its the old adage of "don't tell me, show me" that every creative writing professor I ever had seemed to dole out like they were Skittles.
I think from what I can tell the character of Bobby is a main character so unless something happens he's a mainstay in the show. Which doesn't bother me so much as the token black female friend...she's far to perky and would never be friends with a girl like PJ. Im not trying to be racist here or pull some kind of sweeping generalization but I get so sick of the idea that every main character of every show needs a minority best friend. Just having one minority in a cast of almost all white people rarely feels believable...having an entire cast of diverse ethnicities like The Office, Scrubs, Lost, and even ER works much better. There are a few token friends on shows that I like, but I really don't ever think I am gonna consider JP's friend Stephanie a genuinably believable one on the level of Gus from Psych or Bruce on The Dead Zone.

No, they did mention Rich Hill, and that is awesome! I take that as a really good sign, because other shows would allude to bigger Cub names, like Carlos Zambrano, but they chose Rich Hill. Nice.
Also, on the site for the show, PJ's dream date is listed as "seats at the 50 yard line for The Bears." So they probably are gonna talk about the other teams in Chi-town.

To echo a few people that have said it: "this is my life". I was laughing so hard because ever since I was 15 I never really had any friends that were, I don't know, GIRLS! Haha. All the boys come over an we talk/watch and live Sports, etc, etc. My brotehr's friends call me to ask about Sports stuff, especially when they have a fight about trivia or something.
The show is really nice. I loved the guys. PJ is a good character, the jokes were hella funny and the interaction was quite possibly just excellent.

My husband and I work at the same company, and are therefore clearly "out" about our relationship, but if he had pulled a move like that I'd have been pissed.[/quote]
I think what I loved about this episode was that I'm totally (I'm 28 ya'll, don't judge...I'm just not good at this stuff...) interested in a guy I work with, he could possibly, depending on the day, be interested in me, and he'll do the "bring me a gift / tell me a story / come to hug me" at work thing, always when I'm in the middle of a conversation with someone else, and then get weird / offended that I blew him off.
I've attributed it to his younger age (like I thought of Bobby as younger), or, honestly, have had thoughts about that "intimidation by a strong women" idea. Ladies, I think it's realer than we want to think...
That said, it's what I liked...a lot...about this second episode. Very true. How does PJ juggle a crush on someone that's definitely not as cool as her? It'll be interesting to see where it goes.
I hope it sticks. Tuesdays have been pretty televisionally boring.

Too bad they didn't speak of the Rich Hill Hammer(his nasty curveball). I would like to think they could work some players into the show a couple times but I would imagine the budget restraints of being on TBS would keep them from doing so unless we wanna see one liners from like Roberto Novoa and Will Ohman.

The coolest thing about this show? No laugh track. I seriously loathe almost all shows with a laugh track.
I'm really loving the true-to-life nature of the show. The conversations seem realistic instead of the fake lines coming out of most sitcoms. I, too, am a girl with a ton of guyfriends and only a couple of close girlfriends. And the situations - dating, hanging out, softball, sports watching - ring true to me. The show is intelligently written and I hope the smart scripts keep coming.
But I'll cast a dissenting vote against PJ and Brendan getting together. How refreshing would actually showing friendships between guys/girls as, well gee, actual platonic friends instead of ultimately leading to the hookup?

I was in L.A. for a few months and actually got to work on the set for the next two episodes of My Boys.
I have to agree that I was very happy that Jim Gaffigan was on it and I thought he was the best of the group during takes but Jamie Kaler surprised me with some hilarious lines. Lots of improv was done between the two of them.
Boy, did I swoon for Reid Scott.

I definitely agree. I quite enjoyed the two episodes, but it seems the actress who play PJ cannot do voice-overs. She sounds dead, uninterested, and totally unnatural in them.
And as for the sports metaphors, I'm not sure if it's because I know nothing of sports and don't care much, but it seemed like there were way too many, and most were very clunky.

The only reason I would give for it not being contrived is that we really don't know anything about Bobby. And afterwards we see him going out with the "docile" yoga instructor (as if being a yoga instructor and being sexually assertive are mutually exclusive).

Her voice doesn't go with her face, especially not in the voiceovers. In the first few minutes of the show, I wondered if we were getting narration from Future PJ, she sounded so much older and craggier in voiceover.
That said, I kind of fell in love with her by the end of the second show. Jordana Spiro is all kinds of good-looking, and she's pretty funny (her attempts to girlie-up on poker night were a highlight).
I liked the supporting cast, especially in the second episode. The "dancer's calves" jokes were pretty good ("How can you tell anything about her calves? She's wearing jeans." "Oh, we know they're there."), and the subplot about Kenny's avoidance of rejection with Coffee Kate was pretty solid. I also liked Jim Gaffigan's pronouncement that because he was married, he could sit atop his married-guy perch and rule on relationships from above.
