I've decided to take Trini Girl's suggestion and start this new topic, although I've considered doing it for awhile now.
The one I'm thinking of is actually a PSA. It shows a little girl in bed, overhearing her parents arguing(Mom spends too much money, and Dad smokes smelly cigars). The next day, she snaps at her sister, and when her mother reprimands her, she responds, "Well, YOU yelled at Daddy last ngiht." The theme is obviously "practice what you preach," and I'm thinking it might be one of those Mormon spots from the '70s, but I'm not sure.
Does this ring a bell with anyone?

I guess I'll re-post this from the Mini-tearjerker thread:
I remember seeing it once (maybe twice?), but it was really powerful. It must of aired more than 15 years ago when I was a kid. I believe Ellis Island(in NY) had gone through a major renovation, so they were advertising to get visitors.
A father and son (the boy was about 6 or 7, I guess) are walking around in the new museum exhibits. Then they come to a room with large TV screens that show footage of various immigrants arriving in the US for the first time. The last shots of the ad show the little boy looking at a little boy on the screen that looks exactly like him.
*Bonus: the boy in the ad was played by a very young Macaulay Culkin.
Anyone remember this ad? It might have only aired in the NY metro area.

There was a commercial that used to air incessantly (sometimes twice in one break!) on ABC's World News Now for the Spanish language program Amigo. The initial version was bad music / bad voiceover / insipid vo'ed Spanish lesson (over a still graphic) that went: "For example, Bank. BANKO. Modern. MODERNO. Public. PUBLIKO."
In time, they actually had a "pitch person" and "testimonials"... none of which made the commercial any better.

I remember seeing this commercial on Nickeledon in the early 90's when Shaq first hit the scene and he was super popular. It was for some toy that related to him, but I forgot what it was. Probably just a basketball hoop, but the jingle in the commercial went:
Shaq Attaq!! I want to be big like that!! SHAQ ATTAQ!!!
I get that jingle stuck in my head all the time and I've never seen anybody ever bring it up anywhere on the internet.

Waaaay back when The Partridge Family was on, David Cassidy did an ad for Rice Krispies cereal. You have no idea how many Rice Krispies this little fan managed to put away because of it.

Back in the early 80's (I think). There was a commercial for this album (before CD's were big and way before mp3's) of slow R&B songs. It featured 2 or 3 young black guys and think it was called "Hey Love." The premise was that you needed this album because once you put the slow jams on you could get romantic with/slowdance with your girlfriend/significant other/date. The catchphrase is the first guy asking the second if he could borrow the album for the weekend and the second one saying:
"Noooooooo, my brother. You've got to get your own."
as he gently takes the record out of his friends hands. Nobody remembers this but me, even though I've seen it parodied in different movies and shows. I can remember at least 2 different times they said it on Whose Is It Anyway? Anyone else remember this?

I know that quote was referenced in
House Party; your recollection of the ad sounds familiar. Maybe it was a K-Tel compilation?
[ETA: Here you go my brother- here's the commercial for

I vaguely remember that one. I suspect it was brought to us by the same company that brought us "Freedom Rock" (Remember the ad with the Cheech & Chong wannabes?
"Hey, man...is that Freedom Rock?")

Oh yeah, I must have seen the "Freedom Rock" ad a bunch of times, because I can still picture it, with Freebird playing. Fortunately, my roommate was a huge Eagles/Chicago/Skynyrd/Clapton/etc fan and already had 90% of the songs on albums, so there was no need to buy it.

Sometimes, while I am with my hubby, if a song comes on the radio that I like I'll say the turn it up phrase and see if he gets it. It has been 13 years and he still does not think it's funny. But I do!

OK, let's see if anyone else ever saw this commercial, because every single person I have ever met looks at me like I've lost my mind.
It was an ad for some shoe (Nike or Reebok, most likely). It started out like a nature documentary about praying mantises, and the VO was all about the mating of the species, and the last line was something about how the female kills the male once they have reached their happy place. At that moment, the male mantis turns and "looks" into the camera, and the next shot you see is of him running at top speed down a slender, grass-like leaf, with tiny little running shoes on.
It made me laugh so hard that I gave myself a headache. I saw it exactly one time. Not one other person I have ever met has ever seen this. Was I hallucinating?

This one was on daytime TV in the late 70s. It was for a set of plates and eating utensils, all clear plastic, which fit into a huge plastic box. The ad had the (rectangular) plates all floating around in midair against a dark background, while a deep, booming voice intoned, "SPACE-DINE!!"

Does anyone remember the commercial, I think it was for Staples or maybe Office Depot, from the mid 90s. It was about how fast you could fix errors on stuff like multiple copies of memos (or what have you), easily by using their company. Basically, the boss is trying to get stuff together to impress a big client and his assistant has put the client's name on the paper work as "Bib". The boss is like "Bib? The client's name is Bob!" so the assistant has the change everything. Later they are introducing the client. The boss says "Welcome Bob!" and Bob replies "Its Bib!" Oh this still cracks me up to no end- but no one I know seems to remember this commercial. Anyone?

Okay what about this one? It would have been from 1983 or 84. It was for Brut 33 and there were about 3 or 4 little vignettes involving romantic couples throughout history. It was really cheeky- pushing the envelope- I was a little kid but I still remember being embarrased if it came on when I watching tv with my parents....and it wasn't on for very long if IRC
The first story was set in the Garden of Eden. Eve was kinda bored with Adam until he put on some Brut 33. The VO was describing the situation. The only words I remember are:
Snake said "Adam, put this on". Autumn came and the leaves were gone! Then singing
Where? Where? Where'd you be without Brut 33?! As Eve starts chasing Adam around the tree sans fig leaves. The next story was with Napoleon and Josephine but I don't remember anything else about it.
Sound familiar? It is possible it was only shown in Canada.
OMG, after years of weird stares from friends thinking I was insane...I FOUND IT! Thanks YouTube!

I think this was some promo for a CBS sports show, or maybe just CBS itself, it was early to mid-90's. Anyway, this guy is trying to kill a fly in his house and it seems like the fly is taunting him. Then it flies out the window and lands in a garbage truck, when someone throws a TV in there and it smashes the fly. The TV flickers on and shows the CBS logo and possibly the sports show logo while the announcer is blathering and there's this peppy music. As you can see, I only remembered this from the sheer WTF factor. (Plus I was a kid and thought it was hilarious.)
So did I dream this, or what?

janie jones Me too! I'm glad I'm not alone. I'm obsessed with it- can't stop watching it and forwarding it to everyone. It's better than I remember it!
I even have favorite parts- like the look on the face of the guy in background of the Samson vignette after Samson and Delilah start frolicking in the water. Classic! And how Napoleon sprays the deodorant on OVER his clothes! Can't yet figure out what Marion is saying to Robin Hood, I can only get the end part "ye smellth good!"
And I'm sorry but Snake is oddly attractive in a 1980s pre-cursor to emo "I love wearing black eye-liner" kinda way.
janie jones
Jan 21, 2008 @ 1:32 pm
I like the way the snake is watching Adam and Eve run around the tree, and I like the way Napoleon's girlfriend says "Don't get caught without your Brut." My other favorite part is the people from the Robin Hood scene dancing behind the bottle of Brut. I think Maid Marion is saying "In a field or a [something], ye smelleth good." I'm not quite sure if that makes sense, but that's what I hear.
I want to hang out in the deodorant aisle and sing that song to men who buy Brut.
Mallory K
Jan 21, 2008 @ 3:37 pm
Two blink and you miss it moments that crack me up are when Napoleon is running up the stairs and is repulsed by the not so attractive woman cleaning the floor..he kinda shudders and steps back. Then in the Robin Hood/Maid Marion opening sequence they are carrying in some guy tied to a stick like they are going to pig roast him or something- its so random!
Also love at the end, when they are showing the products against the black backdrop and the singers start 'jamming' the jingle and screaming "where! where!" all crazy. And janie, I'm totally up for a performance of this in any deodorant aisle.

Oh man, I never noticed Napoleon shuddering. That's so hilarious. I never noticed the scrazy singing at the end, either, probably because I'm always laughing too hard. I did do a double take the first time I saw the guy on the stick though. This Brut 33 commercial is genius. Oh, how I love it.

Jan 25, 2008 @ 7:24 pm
janie I totally agree!
The Brut 33 commercial is brilliant! At first viewing its easy pass off as silly fun, which it is, but there is so much detail in it..in the scenery and the lyrics. I read they cancelled it because it didn't fit the image Brut wanted to portray...but IMHO thats a mistake...as you said, its genius. They should have done follow-up commercials with other historical couples!
Okay topic: Does anyone remember a commercial from 2001, it was for Saab and there was a woman in I believe the back seat of the car looking out. The song was haunting (in a good way), the lyrics were something like "Just want to let go...leave the past behind me" then stuff about moving forward....can't remember exactly...it stuck with me because it just hit on exactly what I was I was going thru at that time. The woman might have looked like Beth Gibbons (Portishead) but I might be just be thinking that because the song was haunting like a lot of her songs. Thanks!

Jan 25, 2008 @ 9:48 pm
I know! The details in the Brut 33 ad are fantastic! I just noticed that the flower wilts when it gets close to Adam's B.O.! And I also just noticed that in the Samson and Delilah part, the guy with the fan ends up chasing the blonde girl around. I'm so obsessed with this commercial.
Mallory K
Jan 26, 2008 @ 10:37 am
Me too- the work they put into it the little details is amazing...if you look really close during the Robin Hood/Maid Marion scene the feather in Robin Hood's hat "stands at attention" after he sprinkles on the Brut 33...its so cheeky! I love! You can keep finding new things in it, it never gets old! New favorite commercial of all time!
janie jones

Mallory K
Jan 26, 2008 @ 6:15 pm
I never noticed the cardboard set...that's HILARIOUS esp since the other sets are so realistic and involved!
I also think its hilarious that we seem to be the only people completely capitvated by this commercial. Like here on the board no one else seems to care and IRL- though I admit a few of my friends thought it was funny, no one is like as into it as we are & most thought it was silly. I'm stumped because I think its the most brilliant thing! And I want to share the awesomeness of it! Okay, I need to go watch again....

Jan 26, 2008 @ 6:52 pm

Help, please! There's a commercial currently airing on TV, and I can't remember what the commercial is for.
There's a guy in a giant pepper costume, who's passing out flyers. A slightly effeminate guy comes over and tells him he's not doing enough to bring the customers in, then jazz dances in place and chants, "I'm a hot! hot! hottie jalapeno, the spiciest pepper in tooooowwwwwwwwwwn!" Followed by licking his fingertip and touching his own bum, making a hissing sound. The guy in the pepper costume slaps the flyers on the guy's torso and walks away. Any ideas?

Help!
I remember a commercial, I think that it was a camera commercial, from the mid to late 80's. It revolved around a daughter's wedding day and her father remembering her growing up. She danced on his feet as a little girll and now its her wedding day. I think that Michael Bolton sang the theme song, but I'm not sure. I think that one of the lyrics to the song was "You'll always be daddy's little girl."
Does anyone else remember this? When I try to get other people to remember, they say that I'm crazy!
